Who Is Newcastle’s Best Left Back At The Moment?

We are still not fully convinced that Davide Santon is Newcastle’s best left back, at least not as far as defending goes, and Alan Pardew has a few players in the squad who can do a decent job in that position.

Davide Santon Ndewcastle

David Santon – first choice left back

The Newcastle manager has played Davide in that position most of this season, but when our defense has already leaked 12 goals in our first 7 league games, maybe who are the best back four needs to be looked at.

Local lad Paul Dummett has been pressing Davide for the left back position so far this season, but we also have Vurnon Anita, who played a full season at left back for Ajax, and of course Jonas Gutierrez is experienced and could also do a job in that position.

It will be harder with Loic Remy now on the left wing for Jonas to start too many games,  while the French International striker is fit and well.

And of course we have Yanga-Mbiwa, who has been dropped from the center-back position, and he played left back for Newcastle in the last few games pf last season, and looked very good in that position, and maybe that’s his best chance at getting a starting position at the club.

Finally there is 20 year-old Massadio Haidara, who we brought in from Nancy in January, and so far he has been out all season with a knee injury, but this lad is a very promising young player,  and will be pressing in the future for a start in that position.

Let us know who you think is Newcastle’s best left back at the moment.

Hey Ed, settle down. It takes a while for us to put out our well-thought out posts (at least 5 minutes) and then you move on!

    Repost:
Funny how people pick their pet hate and fire away.
Tiote had a good game, was pivotal in our win, yet he was criticized by some. In my opinion a good Tiote (whatever that means!)starts, every time. Unfortunately the Anita – Cabs duo is too light weight and easily overwhelmed.
Jonas hardly played and here come the attacks! He’s a decent player, was our best player, but the babysitting set him back. give the guy a break!
Williamson had a good game, bar one mistake. Your Terrys, Ferdinands etc. they all make mistakes. He’s a hard working professional, a good squad player.
Now, having said the above, let’s do some good old fashioned criticism 🙂 The following are NOT my pet hates, far from it 😉 ! In fact, the first one is my favourite:
HBA: what the hell? Just when he spoke of consistency and ‘balloons’ he goes and offers those 2 performances. AP, can you bring out the best of this player or not?
Cisse: what the hell? This guy scored the best brace in the history of football. He couldn’t miss. He made Ba look like a dud. Hope he doesn’t ‘get stuck’ like that Torres.
Krul: not so critical as the above of him, but looks shaky.
I will not lean into Debuchy, Mbiwa and Santon because that would mean introducing Taylor… Help! 🙂

Pardew had said long back that Benarfa would only play for him in a No. 10 role.
Then just play him up top with Remy.(and no cisse)

No doubt in my mind santon is our best left back… just a shame we dont have a left footed winger to compliment his right peg. Its no good having two players cutting in, makes our wing play very one dimensional. If pards is going to persevere with remy on left then maybe santon should be swapped for a lefty just to give the team more balance…

its between santon/dummett and the one you missed off that list ^^ hairdryer !

tbh we are well spoilt for choice with the 3 of them !
for me i would go for dummett just because he’s homegrown.

AP should experiment with playing Santon on the wing. He can ghost past players and doesn’t need to worry too much about defense.

On HBA, doesn’t he like to run at players? Could he play behind a 9? But, worth a go.

It concerns me that Cisse hasn’t really found a player to combine with…

How people can vote for Dummett when he’s hardly played any first team games for us is beyond me. Have a word with yourselves.

Pardew needs to decide – Does he want like for like backup players in the squad or does he want options.
Anita , sissoko, obertan are options.

Theres no like for like backup for tiote.
Marveaux can step in for cabaye.

Santon is an average defender who is awful going forward. His decision making, crossing and shooting have all been woeful this season.

The thing with Santon is he should be brought into an offensive position. We know he can tackle and run and score if allowed.
There is a very good player there with attacking instinct.
Plus he’s in my Dream Team as a defender as I was convinced he’d be brought more up field this Season.
Back to Left Back, keep Dummet & Mbwia pressing for place.

I voted for santon but I was tempted to go for mbiwa from what I’ve seen of him he looks more confident at left back and with a run of games he could soon take the position.

I think you have forgotten about Gael Bigirimana. He did perfectly fine covering for Tiote when he was crocked / suspended. So much so, that people wanted him to start ahead of Tiote.

Dummett is capable but unproven. All it takes is one game where he is repeatedly beaten and we have another 6 – 0 ‘er which would open up the floor for him.

I would rather go for the much more experienced Santon, who despite his defensive frailties, gives us a good option further up the pitch.

On paper Santon looks the part for sure, but he has to many frailties, he is neither a good defender or a good winger, sort of caught between the two, were as young dummet is quicker and more important, a better defender, a natural defender and better crosser of a ball if he gets the chance to do it.

Santon is a show pony, and Dummet is a good work horse with a touch of panache!

Franffurt, we playe Brighton last season and Santon got stuffed virtally every time of Lua Lua, time after time he got his pants taken down, I have seen it on many occasions since as well, now every full back is going to get done now and again because sometimes wingers are just to good, Dummet is my preference over Santon I have watched him from being a kid, he rarely makes a mistake, and even if he gets the nod to replace Santon at some time I feel for sure he wont let us down. a proper defender is the kid.

Santon is one of the worst defensive full backs we have ever had ive siad it before he is a top sports car going forward but a clapped out Datsun defending, he has never had the chance to play on the wing he has to be better than Jonas same goes for Debuchy cnt defend to save his life now does that put some presure on the CB’s or what? AP see’s no wrong in the mistakes Santon makes they cost us goals every time how can you build a mean defence on that, He was at fault lst sat for their goal, against Everton Merallias made him look a schoolboy the way he went past him to set up Lukaku, against Villa he was at fault for the Agbonlhor sitter that he missed he is an awful awful defender why wont AP move him to the wings?

I find it easy to choose dummett as i haven’t seen any of his decisions at left back be wrong. he nullified navas in our embarrasment at man city when he came on and he was one of the best players against Leeds, never put a foot wrong in any bit part or starting role I’ve seen him.

play Santon on the wing, and he will blossom into a player like Bale.

I think dummett may be our answer to our centre back conundrum although if i was pardew (heaven forbid) i would also need to see him play there in a f.a cup game against minows 1st but i know he can be our best cb if pushed there as well. yeah basically i think paul dummett is the mo fo’in shiznit haha.

paul dummett looks small for a CB, don’t think he can make it there. will be bullied, but one thing for sure, he has good control over his left foot. and the times i’ve seen him play there, he looks promising. but the shite pardew just wouldnt dare to use him. that’s what i hate about pardew, no guts. always playing safe.
