Winger Could Get New Role At Newcastle

9:35 am, Tuesday, October 8th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 7 Comments

30 year-old Jonas Gutierrez is back from injury, and he put in a good shift when he came on as a sub after 71 minutes for Newcastle, and as usual he worked his socks off, and even had a decent chance of scoring when he put his header over the bar, from a good position.

But Jonas is now one of the experienced players at the club, and we think he will get first team starts when Newcastle are up against tough opposition, because as well as being able to move down the left wing, he also defends well, and let’s face it – defending is not a strong point of Davide Santon’s play.

Of course Remy will start in almost every game for su when he’s available, so maybe the Frenchman will be use either up the middle or on the right hand side if Jonas comes in, although the Argentine could still work on the right wing, or even in central midfield or at lefty back, at a push.

We don’t think Jonas will be an automatic starter this season, but as we saw on Saturday in South Wales that he can still do a decent job as a substitute, and after he came on Newcastle were able to defend on the left hand side a lot better, thanks to the 22 times capped Argentine International.

That was only Jonas’ second appearance this season for Newcastle, after he was injured in the first game – the disaster at Manchester City.

So Jonas could see himself in a new role this season, and he will still get plenty of games to add to his 194 appearances so far for Newcastle with 11 goals.

And the Argentine will only add to the competition for places this season on Tyneside, and that’s also good.

Comments welcome.

Cue the Jonas haters! Actually I agree with Ed maybe not an automatic starter this season but good to bring on as a sub although I can see Pardew starting him in tough away games.

Hard to see a regular starting spot for Jonas on the wing anymore. But when you consider we have 2 fullbacks who love to bomb forward but can`t really defend he could be worth a place at FB.

and we think he will get first team starts when Newcastle are up against opposition

    Fixed that for you, Ed.

Would much sooner see him in LB with Santon pushed up the flank.

I dont know why people are going on and on about Anita.
Its simple really..Pardew doesent know how to use him.
For pardew there are 2 MFs in the centre, one is defensive and one is creative.
    Anita is neither.

Funny how people pick their pet hate and fire away.

Tiote had a good game, was pivotal in our win, yet he was criticized by some. In my opinion a good Tiote (whatever that means!)starts, every time. Unfortunately the Anita – Cabs duo is too light weight and easily overwhelmed.

Jonas hardly played and here come the attacks! He’s a decent player, was our best player, but the babysitting set him back. give the guy a break!

Williamson had a good game, bar one mistake. Your Terrys, Ferdinands etc. they all make mistakes. He’s a hard working professional, a good squad player.

Now, having said the above, let’s do some good old fashioned criticism :) The following are NOT my pet hates, far from it ;) ! In fact, the first one is my favourite:

HBA: what the hell? Just when he spoke of consistency and ‘balloons’ he goes and offers those 2 performances. AP, can you bring out the best of this player or not?

Cisse: what the hell? This guy scored the best brace in the history of football. He couldn’t miss. He made Ba look like a dud. Hope he doesn’t ‘get stuck’ like that Torres.

Krul: not so critical as the above of him, but looks shaky.

I will not lean into Debuchy, Mbiwa and Santon because that would mean introducing Taylor… Help! :)

I was hoping when I clicked on the article that the ‘new role’ would be ‘waterboy’.

He is not a left back, he is VERY slow. Against fast winger, he would be sh*ting his pants

He is not a winger, cant cross, cant dribble. One assist in 50 games

He can be a centre midfield, but definitely not a starter
