In a game that England were on top most of the time, second half goals from Rooney, an own goal, a wonderful individual effort from Tottenham’s Andros Townsend, and a last-minute penalty from Daniel Sturridge was enough to give England the 4-1 win, and since Ukraine beat Poland, England remain one point ahead of Ukraine with one game to go – which is next Tuesday night.
Wayne Rooney scoring first goal after 48 minutes
England were well on top in the first half and created some chances, but couldn’t score and it was 0-0 at the half with news that Ukraine won 1-0 against Poland and in the live group table England were in second place, when they came out for the second half.
But three minutes later England fans’ nerves were settled when Wayne Rooney had the ball in the back of the net, after a great run down the right wing by Andres Townsend, who was having an excellent game.
And then a comical own goal from Branko Boškovi after 62 minutes had England 2-0 up, and the game was seemingly safe, but then Montenegro started to push forward and a terrific shot from Stevan Jovetic beat Joe Hart in the England goal, but the ball cannoned off the cross-bar.
That was a warning to England, and then would you believe it, but Dejan Damjanovic toe poked the ball past Joe Hart after 71 minutes after a strong ball into the box and it was 2-1.
After 78 minutes Andros Townsend got the ball in the middle of the field, moved forward and with his weaker right foot but a glorious shot past the Bulgarian goalkeeper Vukašin Poleksic, who had a good game.
It was a fantastic first goal for England from Townsend, and he went crazy.
The game opened up as Montenegro went for goals, but England were able to play the game out until the second minute of injury, when Daniel Sturridge was brought down in the penalty box, and Daniel himself converted the spot kick easily.
Andros Townsend was the star man for England down the right wing tonight, and he was named the Vauxhall Man of the Match.
It was a harder game than 4-1 suggests, but England got the job done tonight.
With Ukraine playing San Marino in the last game, England will need to beat Poland at Wembley on Tuesday night to qualify for the World Cup finals in Brazil next summer.
