It seems that Newcastle will be after British players – at least in the next couple of transfer windows, since they realize now they have too many foreign players in the squad, and it also seems the Magpies were interested in signing new England midfield star Andros Townsend from Tottenham last summer.
England star Townsend – after scoring terrific goal against Montenegro
Joe Kinnear and Alan Pardew have talked and decided on who their top targets will be in January, and it seems like French striker Bafe Gomis may not be one of them.
This is what the Newcastle manager has said to Sky Sports:
“Joe has asked what I want, I’ve told him and it’s his job to get it out of Mike Ashley,” “We need to look at British players because we’re starting to get filled up with perhaps too many foreigners.”
‘We weren’t sure about Townsend – I think that’s where everybody was at the start of the season,” “You’re talking about a high level. “We’ve got fantastic players at our football club and is he better than the ones we’ve got? “
“I was a bit like ‘hmm, not sure’. I think Andre Villas-Boas was a little bit like that as well.” “But fair play to the lad, he’s come into Tottenham’s team and done terrific and now he’s made that extra step which is great for England and Spurs in particular.”
One thing is for certain, and that is Newcastle will not be signing Andros Townsend now, as he will be far too expensive now.
Newcastle were linked yesterday with three Englishman – and they were Tom Ince of Blackpool, and Wilfried Zaha and Ashley Young of Manchester United.
So we expect Newcastle to be linked with a lot more players from Britain now through January.
