It was a good controlled performance from the England side tonight at Wembley, and they finished top of their World Cup Group to qualify for the finals in Brazil next summer by beating a good Poland side 2-0.

Poland started the game well, but then after 20 minutes England started to take control, and had a number of chances which they missed, the main culprit being Welbeck, who had two great chances but missed both of them.
But then that man Wayne Rooney settled the England fans’ nerves with an excellent goal after 41 minutes,when he headed home an excellent left wing cross from Leighton Baines to put England ahead, in a game they had to win to win the Group.
In the second half England continued to attack and they tried to finish off the game, but Poland to their credit kept attacking – they had nothing to lose.
And but for some excellent saves by Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, the game could have been out of sight, until captain Steven Gerrard beat two men to get into the box and brilliantly poked the ball home after 88 minutes to put the result beyond doubt.
Two good goals tonight and England win their group by one point from Ukraine who beat San Marino 8-0.
France beat Finland 3-0, and in the other group game Spain beat Georgia 2-0, and they win the group, and the reigning World Champions will be in Brazil next summer to defend their title.
Mathieu Debuchy was the only Newcastle player to start tonight, but both Cabaye and Remy were introduced after 71 minutes.
France will now have a two game play-off in November to try to qualify for Brazil next summer.
Both our goalkeepers Rob Elliot and Tim Krul were used subs in Ireland’s 3-1 home win against Kazakhstan, and Holland’s 2-0 win in Turkey – respectively.
