This Player The Best Left-Back At Newcastle

We weren’t sure that Davide Santon was the best left back we have at Newcastle at the moment, so last Tuesday we put out a poll on various players who can play at left back, but unfortunately we (again) screwed up a little, because initially we left our Massadio Haidara, who has been out injured all season, but is thankfully now fit again.

Newcastle United v West Ham United

David Santon – tops our poll

So Massadio could have received even more votes than he has at the moment, but for those of you who haven’t yet voted here’s your chance – one vote per reader.

Who's Newcastle's Best Left Back?

View Results
Loading ... Loading ...

Santon is leading with local lad Paul Dummett next in line, but we’re surprised that Vurnon Anita has such few votes since he played a full season at left back for Ajax, and he’s a tidy full back on either side.

And Mapou probably has his best chance at a starting position on Tyneside in either full back position.

What do you think?

Comments always welcome.

I voted for Santon, but he’s the best of a bad bunch. Don’t get me wrong, he doesn’t do too much wrong, but every now and again he caused the odd panic attack. I have high hopes for Dummett once his development has more time to shape up.

mourinho rates santon. mourinho doesnt rate mata.. so all we have to do is finish top 4.. & offer mourinho 10mio + santon for mata…

A few articles back: Jack Nickolson supports NUFC?!

On this article: Haidara, Dummett and Santon have all played well in that position. One issue, right footed defenders favour that foot, so there’s a bit of a problem there for probably the best overall in that group.

On internationals: Got to watch two of our players in one game. Tiote was dominant, surely must be in our starting 11. I know there’s a price there (i.e. Anita), but AP must accommodate all 3 somehow (e.g. start Tiote – Cabs, replace Cabs half time – or whoever is playing worse). Team rotation, depending on the team across from you, is crucial anyway.
Good goal by Cisse at the very last, that will give him confidence. 3 of our players scored in internationals!

On CB’s, Colo out? So Taylor in? Must admit, I dread the idea. It’s not a matter of ‘if’ with him, more of ‘when’. Against the odds, we must beat or draw vs Liverpool, or we are moving backwards. Revenge!

    Oh! What a surprise!

Several people insisting that Pardew is clueless because Santon isn’t a left back and that Dummett should obviously be brought in for him. I even remember one muppet describing Santon as a “world class left winger”…

And it turns out that the majority of fans think that Santon is our best left back.

Yep, he has weaknesses but I’d agree with that. Perhaps certain people can stop using weaknesses in a 22 year old players game to insult our manager.

Ed no offence but does it really matter what we think?

It’s down to who pards trusts most to play the position, I agree that our best LB is santoon but have to admit to be extremely impressed with dummett’s showings and attitude
But we have 3 young LB STILL at the club, why? They can’t all fill the spot, c’mon JFK sort these lads a loan period and earn your keep!

The only reason I can see for all 3 still being here is that at least one if them can play RB (dummett?)

Haidara has been injured, surely that’s an obvious reason for why we have 3 left backs at the club? We weren’t going to send Dummett out on loan again when he’s clearly going to compete for the first team. Maybe either Dummett or Haidara can compete with Debuchy for right back and if not then presumably Haidara goes out on loan.

Why are people so desperate to send our players out on loan?! We’d look real mugs if Santon got injured and Dummett was out on loan again.

Not sure if I put this on as I had a lot of beers and was smoking and eating amsterdams finest but in was talking to a few fans over there and they were sayin Anita best position is left or right back and that’s the only place he’d get anywhere near Dutch squad as he’s not good enough as centre mid but a great full back..
This is apparently why he left as he felt he wasn’t playing enough in the middle and Ajax thought he weren’t good enough for centre mid

As I said I imagine one can play RB, yes haidara has been injured but he’s training again now and the loan window is open

The need to get lads out on loan is to help them progress by getting playing time, would of thought that was fairly obvious tbh, as pointed out by Ed LB is fairly well covered so why not set up a loan deal for some of the prospects?
Loan deals are proven to really help in the development of young players so why have them simply boosting numbers?

    Gaz 44
Wasn’t Anita an integral part of the Ajax midfield when the went on an unbeaten run and coasted to the league title?
Seem to remember there manager desperately trying to keep hold of him

No doubt at the middle of last season I would vote Santon.

However, he’s right footed and if you saw the way Everton ripped him apart (with his anticipation criminal for a full back) on his wrong side we can’t move forward with him at left back. I say save the cost of a left winger and move him up there.

For my money Haidara is our best left back. Strong, focused, pacey with a composure dealing with the ball. He reminds me of Enrique without the stupid dribbling around near the box.

toonarmydownsouth Raylor is not a left back. He covered there because of injuries. He done OK but suffered against any pace on the outside. His best position is either as on the right of a 3 man midfield or as a right sided midfielder.

Suppose it makes sense though, wasn’t there a hold up with him coming here as he was seeking assurances from pardew over his position? Been impressed with him in the middle this season tbf

But if you accept that Dummett is out back-up full back and that Haidara has just returned from injury, when exactly should we have sent one of them out on loan?

You’re making out that JFK hasn’t done his job properly because he hasn’t sent one of them out on loan.

From a previous thread. You say you don”t know why people are joining the march and that MA is doing what is best for the club.

In terms of squad quality, sensible wage ceiling, incentive based player earnings, ST initiatives, even green initiatives etc I can’t argue.

For me it is more about MA appointing his drinking buddies and low end operators to key positions within a major club, ie JFK, Pardew (and Wonga.)

Lower level like the conference if you’re just having a laugh and a bit of fun no problem.

Funny how Pardew says ” Poyet won’t be ready for the derby.” Like AP was so ready for it last season. 3-0 at home to your worst enemy !!!!!!

Rotonda, your last point on Pardew’s comment. I felt that was incredibly ill-advised.

I like to think Pardew has his heart in the job and also the city, our fans’ passion and love for the club – but to remark that Poyet won’t be mentally prepared – after we’ve been beaten by Sunderland at home with their manager one of their worst ever and plucked from league 1 – well it doesn’t fill me with confidence that his words are in the interests of us fans.

I don’t think Anita ever refused to play LB and he did play there when the need arose.
But – before he signed, he wanted assurances that we did not see him as a regular LB – he wanted to play midfield.

Can’t really blame him for seeking those assurances if that’s where he wants to play, then it’s up to him whether he signs for us or not.

I am really pleased that he did – quality player (AND played LB without making a fuss when we were short)

I wonder if last season Ash said to Pardew ok we’ll see how you go next season at home v Liverpool and Sunderland.

For me I think we have a great team and even squad, but there has been little to no improvement in the way we play as emphasized v Hull and Everton . We are still very static as a team and rarely look fluid as a group of players like ours really should be.

Liverpool on the other hand have gone from strength to strength and are playing some exhilerating football.

Arguably Remy, Cisse and Ben Arfa on paper are as threatening a unit as Suarez, Sturridge and Moses and M’Biwa as good as Sakho but one team has a progressive, modern, footballing manager and we have Pardew.

I don’t think Sunderland will do 3-0 again but Pardew should really keep his mouth shut about other managers, because Poyet shoots Pardew down every time they meet on the field.

Not every young player needs to go out on loan!

We currently have Amafatlatino, Newton, Richardson and Abeid out on loan while both Campbell and Tav came back early due to injuries.

Both Haidara and Vuckic have had injuries and they will need to be fully fit before sending them out on loan.

Meanwhile Everton have 2 players out on loan and Spurs have 7 players 23 and under out on loan. So we’d have 6 if Campbell and Tav had stayed out.

Why do people make such a big deal about this?

For some players it’s better to stay with us and for others it’s better to go out on loan. Then if they go out on loan, they need to be at the right club who will play them in the right position. The smaller clubs know that we have players available for loans, they will have been to our reserve matches to see if we have someone who they need.

I just wish people would stop criticising for the sake of it.

because it has been a club problem for 10+ years….we dont give the kids the right experience. Our coaching staff for kids isn’t great, our methods don’t produce many players, the ones who have had a loan whether its championship or scotland or gateshead are better for it.

youth level football is rubbish, need to be playing first team, even lower leagues have clever old pro’s who know all the tricks of the trade which players need to learn to deal with.

I don’t blame ashley or anyone specific, we have been crap at this for as long as i remember.

It’s not criticising for the sake of if at all
The players you have mentioned on loan aren’t and have never been near first team standard, masido and dummet are, so why progress them to a point then stagnate there career?

Everton have 2 players on loan? So what? They also loaned out Barkley when nearing first team to push him on that extra step

So once again this isn’t criticism for the sake of it, which is tbf what your current criticism seems to be
