Alan Pardew has talked today about Paul Dummett and has come out and said theta he wants Paul to be given a new deal by Newcastle, so we suppose that now goes to Director of Football Joe Kinnear to get a new contract agreed with Paul and his representatives.
Paul Dummett after scoring against Liverpool
Paul and Conor Newton signed one year deals in the summer, after their very successful St. Mirren loan spells last season, but Paul was so outstanding in pre-season that he was kept in the first team squad, and it’s likely he will get quite a few games this season in the Newcastle first team.
The Chronicle is reporting today that Newcastle and Dummett are keen to get an extended deal signed – so maybe Paul can get a two or three year deal.
And since we have been trying to get better in our set plays, here’s a defender who can score goals, so he would presumably be dangerous from corners and the like if he’s in the side – and he took his chance beautifully.
Unfortunately Paul’s Dad was not at the game, and he missed the experience of his son not only playing well, but also getting his first goal for Newcastle.
This is what Paul said today:
“My dad missed the goal because he was on a plane.” “My phone was going mad after the game.”
“He didn’t see the game because he was in Portugal and landed in Newcastle at 2.30pm.” “So he got a shock afterwards.” “But he was buzzing.”
We hope Paul gets a three-year deal, and that we hear about the signing in the next week or two, and there shouldn’t be any complexities in getting the 22 year-old signed up at his home town club.
Comments welcome.

A club like ours should be trying to qualify for the EL every season, yet our involvement in that competition has been used as an excuse as to why we slumped in form.
A more ambitious owner would have signed a few additional players to ensure we had the requisite depth to maintain league form sufficient to qualify for the EL again as well as doing well in Europe.
Some fans have used the “well at least we’re not in Europe” argument as if it is a good thing. They breathed a sigh of relief that we are not in Europe as it damaged our league form, and then will deem it a failure if we do not finish close to the European places! A contradiction if ever there was one.
Ashley does not want European football, a safe 10th/11th place finish will do him nicely, and that is a failure as far as I am concerned.

Whilst I tend to agree the target is mid table/low top half as it is safe and cheap (compared to pushing on) to achieve I’m still not 100% convinced.
Ashley/whichever mouth piece he gets to speak tends to say we have long term plans. That 5th place shocked us all and no doubt will have shocked him as well and maybe the plans to bring more players weren’t in place…knowing how frugal he is he wont have paid that bit extra for them either.
So maybe he does want europe but the target was 2/3 years down the line.
I know there’s probably more evidence to suggest your argument is right…but I wouldn’t 100% rule this one out either…even though i don’t believe it myself.

Comment #45Ciaran…Firstly, let me just clarify that I wasn’t championing that as a good thing, just that it should, in theory, help us this season.
I completely agree that the aims of this club should be to qualify for European competition. Granted we were thrown a huge curve ball, given that we were relegated, but they did the hard work and got us back there. Whether luck was a big factor or not, more effort should have been made to keep us there.
No point saying how far away the big boys are from us, then when we get close, do nothing to stay there. A perfect example of failure in my eyes. Some will say that we didn’t have enough money. Well then they should have planned better, worked harder, I don’t know what exactly (it’s not my job), but they had shown the year before that they know how to do the business. Truth is, they were arrogant and as you say, I don’t believe it was the real ambition of Ashley to stay there.
Don’t be too harsh on most fans for being relieved that we’re not in EL. I’m sure they’d love to be there as much as you, but clearly, given the orders from up top, we’re not really in a position to be in Europe without it being a huge risk. Back to Ashley on this one…

6 years, 1 relegation, 2 mid-table finishes, a relegation scrap and 1 top 10 finish would indicate that we’re not really interested in Europe.
That’s without even looking at his shocking lack of investment.
If we have a squad capable of it, and need a better manager to implement these long term plans, then, if Ashley was serious about Europe, he would replace Pardew.
I think the entire football world knows that Pardew is not good enough to implement any plan that involves getting into Europe on a consistent basis. Then why is he there? Because the plan is not to get into Europe on a consistent basis.

That’s the problem. Ashley’s lack of investment means fans have to choose between our PL position or a crack at Europe. A decent owner could provide both. He doesn’t want to have his fingers burned again so he is ensuring that we do not get there again by maintaining mid-table mediocrity.
Anyway, that’s the last I am going to say on the issue today as I don’t want to detract from the happy clappy football discussions that were going on.

True, can’t argue with a lot of that.
I also mentioned earlier that it houghton was sacked so we could upgrade as he had taken us as far as he could then surely (if that was actually true and not just replacing a man who had a backbone and integrity) then we should be due another upgrade soon?
I think if we had our current transfer policy but the club had brought in a more progressive manager and got top academy status whilst improving their coaching set up also then at least we could see there was some plan for long term growth and development.
As far as I see no parts of the club tie together…modern/technical players…a manager who likes that idea but can’t implement it and then a director of football who is 100% old school…add to that a scout who looks for technical players not the types the manager/dof are after then there seems to be no plan.
If they bought pardew the types of players he wanted (it might not look pretty) but at least he’d had the type of squad he’d think he could get the most out of.

my last comment on it too
swansea…other than bony signed only cheap/free/loan players this summer….just more bodies to bolster the squad without breaking the bank. That is something we should have done last year…even if we just made loan moves for 2/3 to give us more options

Comment #51“if you’re happy and you know it clap your hands”
What? Nothing? Fine then.
It’s not detracting in my opinion, this is an extremely valid Newcastle topic, even if it is well covered.
I have found it to be a bit of a block of my enjoyment of the club (is it me or was that clumsily written in the extreme?) to be honest. I find it hard to get too excited about things when they’re going well as at the back of my mind, I see little progress to be made in the future as things stand.
Well, I suppose we will all continue to do what we feel is best. I live with some hope that come next summer, when there can surely be no doubt as to whether we have money to spend (thanks SKY), what Ashley does.
I really am sick to death of this “we’ll see what happens in the next window” line.

Comment #53To raise more commercial revenue Newcastle should sell advertising space in the ground as a package. 7 of our next 9 games are on T.V. 3 of which are at home. Newcastle are probably on the T.V. The most outside of the top 6.
The adverstising space in the ground must be worth a tidy sum, Selling space on a match by match basis is not the answer and certainly not to local companies.
The sales team, if there is one, should be trying to attract season long sponsorship for the available space, to national and multinational companies. The likelyhood is we do not have a commercial department.

Comment #55Novo…Did you not know that Kinnear is one of the most successful commercial men on the planet?
I believe I read that the world didn’t even understand what commercial meant until Kinnear enlightened us all.
Please have faith that he is exhausting all channels to ensure that we can compete on all fronts, but those big teams keep getting the best deals out there and what’s left is well, not worth stopping SD advertise for free.

Comment #56Saturday was just another typical nufc hard luck story. The fact we shot ourselves once again on the big occasion seems to be being ignored. The game changing moment was the result of a complete lack of professionalism by players, and more importantly, manager.

my two cents (or sense, given the nature here)
we played incredibly well, except for mbiwa getting sent off, krul letting two goals in, hba was lost, sissoko looked terrible… dummett was lucky, cabs goal was a fluke, pards didnt use the proper formation… the pies were cold and the beer was flat… the temperature wasnt nice enough, too much wind… what am i missing…
for the love of jesus, mary, joseph and the saints… we got a draw with liverpool with ten men… why must some be so effing negative all the goddamn time…
rant over, im proud of the way they played, and hope to see more come derby day!!

Negative people have negative views. People will pick apart everything and have differing opinions but for me this season it’s just nice to watch us score goals and contest games. Last season was a shocker and I’m enjoying watching some fairly good football even if it is in brief spells.

because we were in a good position to win that game and once again, through schoolboy error, we blew it. We should have bagged three points, but we’re so pleased we hung on for one. Put sentiment aside and recognise the major blunder that made it another typical nufc hard luck story.

We had a man down in our box for ages anf played on instead of kicking it out. We then defended a high line with that man playing the scouse onside. Pardew is the man in the technical area, whose job it is to sort out these things by shouting.

Comment #69BandB- You do make a fair point. Individual defensive errors have cost us also in the Hull and Everton games.. Nevertheless I felt that we were good value for a draw and the grit, guts and determination shown augurs well. Last season going down to ten men would have seen us weakly submit to a pasting.

I’m with you – I’ve enjoyed this seasoin more than the last two, three seasions – even the year we finished fifth which we achieved playing some awful football at times.
This season we have had two Newcastle’s one awful but when we have looked good we have looked good.
and we are keeping the ball on the deck a lot more – just Krul needs to improve his distribution.
PS Tony Mowbray just been sacked at Smogland

What should you do when you have a man down in your box playing a top professional team onside? How long did the scenario play out? Why is the managers area called the technical area? He would have a better view from the stand so why not sit there? All obvious answers that you cant see.

Comment #75@Black’n’ Brown. Of course, now I understand..Does that also mean Pardew should have been shouting to Cabaye to pass the ball instead of scoring from 30 yards or so, or screaming at Dummett to get back in to his own half instead of coming up for the free kick and making it 2-1.?
