There is news today that England have been monitoring the very good performances of our young left-back (or center-back) Paul Dummett, who has come through like a steam train at Newcastle this season, after an extremely successful loan spell at St. Mirren last season, and the 22 year-old is now pushing Davide Santon very hard for that left back starting position.
Paul Dummett – needs more first team games to become even better
And every time we have seen Paul play in the Newcastle first team, both in pre-season and this season, he has looked good, and he has 4 appearances do far for his home town club.
But we think if he was given a run in the Newcastle first team, he would very quickly become an even better player.
Newcastle will offer the Kenton youngster a new three-year deal very soon, and since he has never represented Wales at full International level, although he has played twice for the Wales U21 side, he is still eligible to play for the full England side.
And if he can continue to improve and eventually become a regular in the Newcastle side, then maybe he could even become an English International – but there’s a number of ifs there.
But England officials must have been impressed with that they have seen from the Newcastle-born youngster, for them to contact the club and ask the Magpies to keep them informed about Paul.
The reason Paul qualifies for Wales is that his grandfather is Welsh:
“I’m English, my grandad’s Welsh, but Wales gave me an opportunity first and I’ve got family who are Welsh. I’m proud to play for them and as long as they keep picking me I’m happy to play for them.”
Steven Taylor is likely to replace the suspended Yanga-Mbiwa on Sunday afternoon at the Stadium of Light, but we’d love to see Alan Pardew bring on Paul in the second half, so the Geordie lad gets his first taste of the local derby.
Comments welcome.

I’m not sure. They do that with cricket but i’m pretty sure Andy flower, the head coach, will have final say anyway. Suppose Roy will have the likes of neville offering his advice if he thinks he has missed somebody off the list who deserves a place in the squad.

Yeh they were poor but pearce said that one lad was called when boarding the plane and his club made him withdraw so that he could travel on pre season and not even make the bench. Thats the problem with the under age teams.
And yeh to ince and zaha (not been too impressed with zaha though, bit flashy with no substance when i’ve seen but plenty time to develop his game). Defoe is still a good player, top scorer for spurs i think this year in all comps.

Comment #42I honestly think Dummett and Santon would make an ideal left hand side switching positions Santon beating 2 players and cutting inside and Dummett providing the width and final ball in would work like a dream
Hope we tie him down on a decent deal its always good to have a local lad around the first team but if he is not getting game time then he really needs to go back on loan same with Sammy , Bigi and Good

Comment #43Probably a good time to get Dummet’s contract firmed up before his hopes and demands go through the roof?

Comment #47TS, pre world war 2. I believe even after WW2 even though England appointed a full time coach (Winterbottom… I think?) the squad was still initially selected by an FA committee. This lasted on until some time in Alf Ramseys tenure. Can’t remember exactly when it stopped, but I believe Ramsey was the last manager to be handed a squad, rather than select one himself.
