Pardew – We Need To Get This Player Firing Tonight

9:59 am, Wednesday, October 30th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 13 Comments

Papiss Cisse has been almost non-existent for Newcastle so far this season, and in 9 appearances the top Senegal striker has only one goal, scored at home in the last round of the Capital One Cup against Leeds United.

Papiss Cisse – will hopefully play well tonight

But it looks like Papiss will get a start tonight, and he needs to show that he can still score goals for Newcastle, since he’s been way below his best form so far this season, which is one reason Newcastle have continued to be inconsistent this season.

Alan Pardew has confirmed in the Chronicle this morning that Papiss Cisse will start the game tonight against Manchester City:

“Papiss will play – I think he needs a goal.” “I think he needs to play well.” “When he was firing, we looked a different team. We need to get him firing.”

“This will give him an opportunity to do that. He has come out of the team. Sometimes you need to reflect and really focus on when you play.”

“Hopefully, he will play well.”

When Newcastle were doing so well a couple of years ago, one thing we were able to do is to get goals out of nothing due mainly to Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse being able to score goals at any time.

And while Loic Remy has looked good so far for Newcastle and has shown he can score goals Papiss has been below par so far this season.

Cisse has played 70 times for Newcastle with 27 goals so far, and hopefully we’ll see a much better Cisse tonight in that famous number 9 shirt.

Comments welcome.

I’ve said since he bought that share in rangers, that should be his long term project, it’s better suited to him
Minimal investment, there going to fly back to the top flight, when they get there near on guaranteed to be in the CL so for the love of god just sell up! Can’t see it costing him more than £10-15 mil to buy rangers!!!

On Marv, not sure if he’ll feature or what’s even going on with him he’s vanished off the face of the planet! Not sure what the issue is with him fitness/attitude/useless in training but it needs sorting as he has shown flashes of being a very good player but has also shown a very lazy uninterested side aswell
And your right are inability to keep a clean sheet desperately needs addressing, but so does the whole team, were in November and pardew still doesn’t know his best formation or line up

    Sage
In all fairness pardew has said a few times we need to improve our movement, move the ball faster etc
Which really does beg the question why isn’t it happening on the pitch?
The coaches not good enough to implement the changes? Pardew not good enough with his instruction? The players simply not committed enough to put the effort in? Or is there just an all round rock bottom morale with all the negativity that Ashley is bringing to the club?

Firing what? A sawn-off from the hip

Cisse has never been on a trot like this in his career. He ideally needs to be played through on goal.
And how often do we play a pass from central midfield that puts a striker in behind the defence?
Our emphasis is on playing the left and right channels. The problem is that when Ben Arfa and Santon cut inside onto their stronger foot, they usually either run into trouble or shoot.
Cabaye, Remy, Sissoko, Anita and even Tiote are also just as likely to try a 30 yard punt as attempt to split the defence.
Cisse hasn’t helped by either standing still, running offside or attempting a worldly himself.
Surely this isn’t beyond fixing, but it is the pattern week after week.

    tads

thats my worry, he has mentioned the problem but there seems to be no improvement on the field to quicken us up and make us a threat in the box.

on marv, i checked the prem league site and they have him down as fit, so not injured like i thought he might be…it’s weird, he doesn’t pull his weight but got by far our most assists, so need to at least have him on the bench

ideal for the mackems second half when we needed goals and they weren’t posing much of a threat.

    BandB

as i was saying earlier, seems to agree with you on it, the team are too deep for cisse…we use our striker to hold up play and cisse isn’t that type and can’t do it

get the team 20 yards further up with cabs playing him in like last year and he will score again

BandB…Please don’t get in to the detail, there is no need. Pardew has highlighted that he thinks Cisse needs a goal, so a goal is what Cisse will get.

It’s simple really, no need to worry.

BandB – Cisse has never done well when he is through on goal infact if you look back he has missed so many 1v1 chances as it seems he cant score when he has time to think. He is more of an instinctive striker and his goals come from instant reactions to get the shot off. Overall the lads useless tbh and a total luxury player as he is one of the worst fottballer in terms of overall ability to ever put the shirt on. I see players in the conference with better ball control and passing than this lad.

of course, if only we had thought of that

now the team needs a win, so a win we shall get haha

i wish it was this simple

TS…That is unless we need another loss against City to make sure we gain enough experience for next time? Or something like that, tbh, I didn’t really understand that one from wor Alan.

The thing with Marv for me is that a game like tonight he will prob shine in, citeh aren’t over physical he’ll have a bit more time on the ball etc
But against the Mackems he just never looks up for games like that, was it morecombe he last played? He was anonymous!
Actually thought we missed have jonas as a sub against the scum, not the best player but his heart and graft might just if got us at least the point

  • 11 BandB // Oct 30, 2013 at 10:18 AM

    Sage,

I agree. I have said many times that our midfield default position is very deep, and when we do sweep it wide they have a lot of catching up to do to support the attack. And there is a lot of jogging or strolling forward goes on. Pardew’s basic game is meant to be counter-attacking. But it is all too slow, with the point of attack being one of our weakest areas, the crossing.

don’t it make you sick to your stomach reading the words that come out of pardews mouth,

he has said in the last 3 posts on here where the problems are, these problems are not new problems, these are problems we have had for over 3 year now,

I know from reading the blog that I am no longer one of the only guys that want him gone, in fact, I think if there was a poll right now, I would go as far to say that it could be as high as 80/90% would like him gone, and as for the rest, IMO they only fear who we might get next, which is very poor

I have said many times in the last 3 years, his main tactic is to stop the other team playing, to much time is spent on this, and no time at all to work on how to get the best out of our players we have,,

I know im not a coach , or have any coaching badges, but with that squad we have, I know I could have them playing much better by doing just 3 things,

move our play further up the pitch,

get more crosses/balls (passing not hoofing) into the box

get more bodies into the box

we look weak in defence only because IMO both debuchy and santon play as our wingers and fullbacks, as no matter who is meant to be up there , there always helping MF defend

he has to go,, simple as

If we could figure out which formation and style of football we are playing, maybe Cisse could start firing again.

I just worry that when Cisse plays, there is a mentality in the team to sit deeper and try to break the offside trap, or play long balls, instead of playing football and working the buildups.

If we could cut out the hoof-ball when Cisse plays, and try to get him back to being a poacher, maybe he could adjust back to where he was when he first came in.
