After Newcastle had a very poor transfer window last summer, and failed to sign any player permanently, it’s hardly surprising that transfer funds will be made available to Joe Kinnear and Alan Pardew by owner Mike Ashley in January, and the top requirement is to bring in another striker, especially since it’s likely that Loic Remy will leave us after his loan deal is up in the summer.
Mike Ashley – funds available for January window
And two strikers Newcastle will probably be very interested in, are former summer target Bafe Gomis of Lyon, who is now said to be available for just under £2M, with his contract running out in June.
That’s a lot less than the £9M Newcastle were willing to shell out for the player last summer, and would look like a bargain buy for Newcastle, but Lazio and other clubs are also interested in the player.
And news yesterday that former long term target 23 year-old Luuk de Jong’s move to Borussia Monchengladbach has not worked out, and he hasn’t played one game in the Bundelsiga this season, as it seems like coach Lucien Favre doesn’t rate him.
Borussia will probably look to loan the player out in January, and Newcastle may be interested in that, if they have a first chance to sign the player permanently in the summer, but Newcastle will not pay the £12.8M the German club shelled out for him a short seventeen months ago.
And January will also be an opportunity for Director of Football to show he’s got some talent in the recruitment area by bringing in some good players to Newcastle, which is after all his new job at the club.
We also would have liked to see a defender signed in January, but with the top form being shown by Mike Williamson and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa in defense, and players like Paul Dummett and Massadio Haidara pushing for a start, and Mathieu Debuchy looking like one of the best right backs in the Premier League, we may be OK in that area now. 😀
If the lads keep playing like they have the last few games, then we should be in a decent position come January, and getting say two or three good players through the door will strengthen the squad further, and it will be the best squad we’ve had since the great Sir Bobby Robson left the club over nine years ago.
Howay The Lads!!
