France Surge Into World Cup Finals With Glorious 3-0 Win

Mathieu Debuchy and Yohan Cabaye both started the game for France against Ukraine tonight,  and both Newcastle men played their part  in France’s magnificent 3-0 win over Ukraine in Paris tonight to reach the World Cup finals with a 3-2 aggregate against Ukraine.

It was the first defeat for Ukraine in twelve games this year.

Yohan Cabaye – through to World Cup Final

And it was the first time in  the World Cup for a European country that a side had come back from being two goals down after the first leg.

So make no mistake this was a fantastic and gutsy win by a France side in front of a sold-out Paris crowd tonight.

Goals from Sakho after 22 minutes and Benzema after 34 minutes had put France level at 2-2, after losing the first leg 2-0 in Kyiv, and those were the first goals conceded by Ukraine in nine games.

Just before half time Mathieu Debuchy somehow blocked a goal bound shot almost on the goal line.

And with France the better side in the first half the tide turned big time for the home side after 47 minutes,  when Ukraine’s Yevhen Khacheridi was sent off for a second yellow card., after a foul on Franck Ribery.

France started to dominate the game, but Benzema missed a great chance just six yards out after 58 minutes and then after 66 minutes a beautiful strike from Debuchy from just outside the box, flashed just wide.

Mathieu Debuchy – had another good game for France tonight

After 71 minutes a shot from Cabaye looked like it was going in, but the goalkeeper saved well low to his left, with the two Newcastle men prominent for France.

And then it was that man Sakho again who put France ahead for the first time in the tie, and it was after 72 minutes with a goal from close range after Ukraine had failed to clear.

Mathieu Debuchy was taken off after 78 minutes and substituted, and he got a great ovation  from the Paris  crowd for another excellent display in French blue.

And then substitute Giroud had a header after 85 minutes brilliantly saved by the goalkeeper, as France tried to get the 4th goal and it would have been all over.

But then after 3 minutes of added time that was it, it was all over and France had made a remarkable come-back to reach the World Cup finals in Brazil next summer.

Neither Moussa Sissoko or Loic Remy got on tonight, but all our French players will be on a huge high now, after a terrific performance from this France side.

Excellent news for the Toon, the players are going to give it all now, HBA surely knows he has to step up his game to get in our team if he has half a chance and even Gouffy must be thinking he might have an outside chance, what with Shola on his way to Brazil, it can only be good for the squad, shame Senegal played Ivory coast.

    @ shaft

That is the dream scenario with England winning by a slight margin 🙂 .

I will always support England but have said for a long time now our players are overhyped egomaniacs . They were beaten by Germany’s reserves tonight while playing a near full strength squad and the Germans had more clear cut chances and played the better football .

    England are average at best.
Germans had us in there pocket after half hour.
We were well beaten by a team way under full strength.
    Oh well,nothing changes does it.

Hope people realize how important this result is for our season the French 4 along with Gouffran , Mbiwa and Arfa will be BUZZING and busting a gut to make the squad

For me unless Arfa seriously improves his form hes got no chance but a new no 10 role behind Remy and a serious change in attitude from him could see him make the squad all depends on him though has he the mentality to do it week in week out ?Not so sure

What a team France look when that knob Nasri is out of the team he should never pull the shirt on again for them

Pleased for France – hope this has the effect of keeping all our French players settled and not interested in any January moves (might not apply to Benny though with him not being in the squad).

    Evening lads!

Are we playing this coming weekend?

*still cannot see what the result of the France game should have on whether or not any of our French players are staying. Maybe people are just drawing all sorts of conclusion?

makes alot of sense to me

Finished 2nd in a pub quiz with one of our own blog regulars (will not name names) thoroughly enjoyable evening, and I for one am delighted to see France qualify. At least our big name French players will only be seeking summer transfers and not January transfers.

That counts as progress in this 5 year plan doesn’t it?

jesper – I take the view that as all our French squad members know they are going to Brazil in the summer -that this alone should have the effect of them of being content/settled (and a Ruddy suggests no transfer dealing in January -but perhaps the summer.) Any moves in January will cause some disruption to their personal lives -might not initially settle into a new team, may affect performances. I’m sure our current French Squad members will want to retain the group until after the WC.

manxpie…but if as club like Arsenal came in for Cabaye (he won’t leave for less) he would want to leave and I don’t think it would have anything to do with the World Cup or not!

Would that jeopardize his chance? I am not sure I agree 🙂

Senor Tuff… they way I see it is that France is going to Brazil, but it doesn’t mean either of our players are. I mean surely all of our players would want to play, not just sit on the bench.

You could even argue if France hadn’t qualified then they could focus more on what’s in front of them? I think I know what you mean, but I still think we are drawing conclusions here 😉

Hey guys back for short visit.

We more or less know that Cabaye is gone if big enough bid comes in.So question is did tonight increase the chances of that happening? And I think so a little bit but I’m at the same time not sure if it did so enough for other clubs to spend silly money on him. So probably end up staying.

So not expecting much to change until next summer unless we go on bad run and need to buy in January. Maybe someone in or out due to contract issue. Otherwise the board seem to be happy with the current squad and results.

jesper – the only fault in my scenario could be the management at SJP. They are liable to do anything -they are clearly all mentioning about the lack of monies to buy new players – which might be “softening ” us up for someone getting sold sooner rather than later.
