Newcastle Have New Priorities For January Transfer Market

4:34 pm, Wednesday, November 20th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 23 Comments

There’s news in the Northern Echo today that Newcastle will be looking for a right back in Jnauary, because manager Alan Pardew will have to shuffle his back four with Mathieu Debuchy being suspended for one game, but it doesn’t seem to us there’s much reshuffling necessary.

sam byram leeds right back

Sam Byram – 20 year-old Leeds right back a target?

It’s true that we don’t have a specialist right-back other than Mathieu Debuchy , although Davide Santon, who’s right footed can play there as can Vurnon Anita and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.

However, we do have Davide Santon, Paul Dummett and Massadio Haidara as specialist left backs, so maybe that’s what’s causing Newcastle to think about bringing in a second specialist right back, and that seems reasonable.

Newcastle need to bring in another striker in January, or even two, but it seems a specialist right back is also going to be a transfer target.

Players we are interested in are Leeds United youngster Sam Byram, who has only just turned 20, but if he’s priced at £8M by Leeds, which he seems to be, then forget about it.

And of course Manchester City’s Micah Richards could be another target, and he can also play at center-back, which is an advantage for Newcastle, but we’re not sure how much he would cost, and his wages are sky-high, which could be a barrier.

Probably the best acquisition for Newcastle would be to bring in a top young right back, so he has time to develop while Mathieu Debuchy is holding down the right back starting position, and that would be much like when we brought in Massadio Haidara at left back in January,  to start challenging incumbent left-back Davide Santon.

And with Newcastle having a new emphasis on British based players, we should probably expect  the full back the club goes after to be from one of the home countries.

But it doesn’t seem like 21 year-old James Tavernier will now make the grade at Newcastle, since he’s a specialist right back,  and not being considered to come into the squad  given that Mathieu is suspended.

Do you know of any good young right backs that Newcastle could go after?

Comments welcome.

Isn’t that supposed to say ‘Newcastle have NO priorities……’?

    Charlie in the Gallowgate,

Filip Djordjevic looks a decent CF from that list you gave. Two good feet, very good in the air and takes a canny penalty.

Mind, I reckon I could still look half decent in Youtube highlights :)

First job should be to tie up Remy and then resign Ba and De Kong on loan.

We’ll then sign N’Zogbia or Ayew and a central defender (possibly kurt zouba).

If we sign a right back it’ll be kurt zouba.

Too many changes of position causes disruption, moving Santon to the right and Mwima moving to the left with Colo coming in for Mbiwa would be a nightmare, leave Willo, Mbiwa and Santon where they are and put Anita at rightback, only one change with the other 3 who have all played very well of late would be left where they have been playing, and most of Anita’s best displays for us has came from the rightback berth, he is a really good rightback who gets forward effectively, an ideal replacement for Debuchy who does exactly the same type of job which Anita does, lets not mess the entire defence around so we can bring in the hopeless Colo, leave him on the bench where he is best, Anita has got to the right call.

As for future back-up, Byram of Leeds is a must, forget about the £8m price tag, no bid has been made for the lad, that figure has just been plucked out of the air by the press.

    Ed,
Still a problem getting in this blog. Please check…
    Ok:
Debu missed by inches, but several hundred :)
HBA must play on Saturday. The tough thing is, if we lose he’ll be blamed.
If Cabs looks knackered, play Anita from the start.
No, we don’t want N’zog back, he went to ‘bigger clubs’ and he hasn’t improved. Ba, maybe, but, do we want another out of form CF?

My world cup 23 man squad would be:

GK’s – Joe Hart, Ruddy, Forster

Def’s – Richards, Walker, Dawson, Cahill, Jones, Ferdinand/Terry, Baines, Cole

Mid’s – Walcott, Chamberlain, Townsend, Milner, Gerrard, Lampard, Wilshere, Unsure

Strikers – Rooney, Sturridge, Carroll, Unsure

Don’t rate Welbeck, Defoe, Carrick, Jagielka, Barry, Ashley Young, Cleverley

I can’t understand why Hogson keeps picking Jagielka. Welbeck is in worser form than Shola. He’s absolutely useless and scores about once in every twenty games. I’m better than him.

England need a good quality defensive midfielder to come through and another 2 strikers. I’d also take Ross Barkley. Phil Jones can play in the holding role. England need someone like Vurnon Anita.

    Kets

    No Glen Johnson

  • 15 Ketsbaia9 // Nov 20, 2013 at 6:27 PM

Too be honest all the english players at man utd apart from rooney are very poor.

  • 16 jayphoto // Nov 20, 2013 at 6:37 PM

Kets , zouma is a centreback who can fill in in defensive mid, he is no right back! He gave his word to st ettiene to stay the whole season too! De jongs not a bad shout but no more loans for me! We need to sign players so we can build around them!

  • 17 Ted Bundy // Nov 20, 2013 at 6:43 PM

I’m with Kets, we should definitely go for De Kong. As long as we can tame him and keep him from climbing atop The Leazes with Mash’s daughter in hand, I think he’ll be a real force up front.

  • 18 Ted Bundy // Nov 20, 2013 at 6:46 PM

Oh and this is what I believe will be the team for Norwich, which I’m happy with, with the possible exception of Santon –

    __________Krul__________
    Anita__Willo__Mbiwa__Santon
    Sissoko_Tiote__Cabaye_Gouffran
    ____Uncle Shola__Remy

  • 19 TorqToon // Nov 20, 2013 at 6:58 PM

Plus zouma is currently serving a 10 game ban following a red card.

Excellent player, but can’t see st. Etienne letting him go especially now.

Wondering what pardew would have done if he was the french Manager?

Given a right good go in the last 20 minutes.

  • 21 NOVA2967 // Nov 20, 2013 at 7:09 PM

8 mill from Byram should work. Possible future England RB. Plus 10 years of service not bad at all. Need to snatch up Caulker which should of been done this past summer.

  • 22 AmericanGeordie // Nov 20, 2013 at 7:34 PM

    Danny Simpson. 😉

BTW, I saw Tavernier play in the friendly a few years back in Columbus, OH. I honestly never rated the kid. (Looks like he should be playing in the MLS at best as a matter of fact!)

As far as him being a young, developing player, for the record he is 22 years old. Santon & Dummett are also 22, and Haidara is 20! Tavernier will never make in at the club.
