Argentine Returns To The Fray And Competition For Places

8:26 am, Thursday, November 21st, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 9 Comments

News today that Jonas Gutierrez is finally back at Newcastle, having been on compassionate leave for a few weeks in Argentina, and hopefully he will come into contention for the game against Norwich City on Saturday afternoon.

We haven’t seen much of Jonas in a Newcastle shirt this season, and after 40 appearances last season, he’s made only two appearances so far this season, but he could be on the bench for Saturday.

There’s no news on what the personal issue is (and there shouldn’t be either), but Jonas has been on Tyneside all week, so he will have put in a bit of training at the Benton training facilities.

Jonas will find that competition for places at Newcastle side have increased this season, and we’ve had players like Yoan Gouffran and Loic Remy who are willing to track back on the wing, and help out the defense, which is what Jonas has been doing ever since he arrived at Newcastle in the summer of 2008 from Mallorca.

Jonas started the first game at Manchester City and picked up a hamstring injury, and he returned in the 2-1 win at Cardiff City in the second half,  and he put in a good stint in that game to preserve the lead and get the 3 points, and his experience is now a major plus for the 21 times capped Argentine International.

We could see Jonas participate more from the bench this season, but Jonas is very competitive, just like Cheick Tiote, and we usually see his best form when he’s under competition for a starting position.

And of course that will only be good for the Magpies, and don’t be surprised if in the next few weeks we see an in-form Jonas Gutierrez.

Hope so.

Good to have him back in the mix, although I’m not sure quite where he fits in now. His work rate was always impressive, but as we know his attacking intent has definitely let him down. With Gouffran getting the better balance between defensive and attacking duties, wor Jonas may struggle.

But still, good to have him back as an option. Welcome back Spidey!

No place for him frankly now that gouffrans come to the fore, even pards can see that he offers more. Well hopefully. :)

3 seasons ago, my fave player for the toon, now, I hope he never plays again for us,

pardew killed off his game, now all he does is runs and falls,,

wish I could get paid 50g a week for that

Ibiza…. I don’t know, I’m probably just a split part of als personality. A manifestation of his own self loathing :) . That or I’m simply being optimistic that pards has gained a bit of sense, seeing as he has started to seemingly address some of the problems of the past couple of seasons a la long balls.

Good owld Catchy, there’s always an upbeat comment to look forward to when we see your name.

It appears it’s Jonas’s turn to receive your encouragement and no matter who, Pardew’s always there to receive your adulation!
I’m puzzled Catchy, if you want to be paid 50 grammes a week, maybe you’ve inadvertantly told us what your unit of currency is and thus, your comments!!
