Coloccini Returns To Lead Newcastle

2:01 pm, Saturday, November 23rd, 2013 by Ed Harrison · 246 Comments

nufc emblemNorwich City .svg

Alan Pardew has brought Fabricio Coloccini back into central defense, and he has moved Frenchman Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa to right-back – in a shuffle made necessary because Mathieu Debuchy is suspended for this game against Norwich City today.

Fabricio returns to captain the side and takes over   from Cheick Tiote, who did very well in that role while Colo was out.

Newcastle will continue to play in a 4-4-2 formation with Loic Remy and Shola Ameobi up front,  and the hope is that Newcastle can get their third win in a row today against a struggling Norwich City side.

And 20 year-old Massadio Haidara returns as a substitute, after recovering from the hamstring strain he picked up against Manchester City in the League Cup, but there is no Steven Taylor, who is fit again after recovering from his hamstring strain.

This is a game we should win today, but these types of games for some reason are never easy for Newcastle – but we hope they can come through for the fans today with a win.

Howay The Lads!!

I’d have gone for Anita at RB.

  • 2 bills-son // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:07 PM

    JB,

    Both of us wrong :-)

  • 3 davetoon // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:08 PM

i hope YM just stays at hom and lets Santon fgo forward as he doesnt have the mobility of Debuchy and for this game should just concentrate on keeping the right tight

  • 4 Hatem's better than Messi // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:08 PM

Oh well at least they’ve planned for this formation for a couple of weeks.
Confidently cruising to a clean sheet or 90 minutes of sheer panic, I don’t know which to expect.

  • 5 ToonDarnSarf // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:10 PM

Surprised! But not a problem for me. If Colo didn’t have the right attitude in training, then he wouldn’t be playing.

  • 6 nufc7lad // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:11 PM

Bad team if you ask me.

Wheres Steven Taylor and Hatem Ben Arfa?
Why isnt Sylvain Marveux, Jonas Guttierez and Steven Taylor on the bench( if he isnt starting)
Why are Haidara and Sammy Ameobi on the bench ahead of them.
Still think we wil thrash them tho 4-0. Remy to have a blinder ;)

  • 7 davetoon // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:12 PM

This team should be able to take Norwich apart. SHOULD

  • 8 The next Mike Williamson // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:14 PM

With Mbiwa at right back, I’d play Ben Arfa. We don’t need our RW tracking back so much with Mbiwa.

It’s two teams of grafters playing against each other today. It will come down to who has more heart. I think we’ll just edge it.

  • 9 Big Pappa Cissé // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:15 PM

Why break up M’biwa & Willo for a guy that wants to jump ship “ASAP” ? .

Haidara should have came in for Debuchy with Santon moving to right back .

FFS Don’t change a winning team Pardew

  • 10 Hatem's better than Messi // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:17 PM

Now Captain Colo will be undroppable. The Willo-MBiwa partnership is history.

  • 11 pottsclock // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:21 PM

At least Bassong isn’t starting which makes my nightmare scenario of him playing a blinder, controlling Remy and heading the winner from a corner a very unlikely prospect

  • 12 santonthenewmaldini // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:27 PM

I suppose with Pardew always wanting to keep it tight at the back this inevitable outcome prob means Mbiwa will be the fall guy against West Brom which is pretty poor like

Not so sure about a 442 with Shola against Norwich they will try to keep it packed with 5 in midfield so we may get outnumbered would have been better with Arfa as the no 10 and let him and Remy move about pulling players out of position might be a bit static with Shola up top ?

Also why the calls to bring Taylor back ? He has been terrible for the last 9 months and is constantly injured its just because he is a local lad that he gets a lot more leeway than Willamson ever will !! For the wages Taylor gets and performances he puts in we should get rid and get another centre back who can play more than 10 games a season ! Only have to look at how solid Mbiwa looks with Willo at the back when he was a mess with Taylor at the back last season coincidence??

Better get the win today will be raging if we put in a limp performance

  • 13 davetoon // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:29 PM

lol @ Liverpool. result good for us

  • 14 askar // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:30 PM

IMO Pardew is taking wrong decision. He should play Ben Arfa behind Remy. Obviously we will not have the same pressure with Norwich.

Anyway, 2-0 for us and We can finish in the top four!

“Jose Enrique we are in the top four, Jose Enrique we are in the top four, Jose Enrique we are in the top four” :-) :-) :-)

  • 15 Hatem's better than Messi // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:35 PM

Can’t knock Saylor’s 100% commitment to the cause. His constant injuries mean none of us know how good he is or could be.

    askar // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:30 PM

What are you smoking my friend?

We cannot be in top 4 even if we will win 30-0.
Chelsea in 4th, with 21 points. We have 17.
If Everton won’t lose, we can be max in 6th.

Also, we need to win 7-0 to pass Man U. no?

  • 17 niafron // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:40 PM

    Bonjour messieurs.

I’m still recovering from the stuning game of France against Ukraine.

Today, i’m curious to see how Cab will play, for he really entered another dimension last tuesday.

  • 18 davetoon // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:46 PM

is it just me or is anyone thinking finishing just outside the Europa places is where to be. Champions league would be a dream but Europa is a millstone for the following season with our thin squad

  • 19 Rotonda heights // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:47 PM

Pardew does like making it hard for himself. Surely the least disruption was Anita in at RB, not someone who doesn’t even want to be here. Have we really missed either Argie at all?

Nice to see Martinez and Poyet shutting up the numpties who wrote them off.

  • 20 Hatem's better than Messi // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:48 PM

Hopefully the champagne stopped flowing by Thursday and he’s motivating himself to play for NUFC.

  • 21 Hatem's better than Messi // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:49 PM

Congrats Niafron, it’ll be a better tournament with France in it.

  • 22 Transfer Sage // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:49 PM

Persoanlly would have had anita right back, didn’t want to break the CB partnership as it’s worked well but colo and wilo are good together as well so shouldn’t be a massive issue.

I like that we haven’t gone to ben arfa he doesn’t deserve his spot. This side has been doing well and getting results which is the main thing.

As for a team of grafters? well yes but also genuine quality in cabakye, remy, sissoko and gouffran, much much more than work horses.

  • 23 Black and White with an army lol // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:49 PM

in my view having Colo & Willo at the back means we will be sitting deep since them 2 or slow and i think Redmond & Olsson will destroy our defence.

2-2 for todays results but with AP it could be 3-1 to Norwich

  • 24 Rotonda heights // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:49 PM

    davetoon

what’s the point saying we finished 8th or 9th? you’ve got to aim for something and we don’t do cups

  • 25 Transfer Sage // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:51 PM

    rotonda

Anita would have been my choice but norwich have some big lads so wouldn’t be ideal him coming up against hooper or somebody at the back post, so see why we didn’t go for it.

As for poyet and martinez shutting people up….well not so sure, takes more than a few good games. Everton are doing no better than under moyes and poyet has been good but only 4 games.

  • 26 Gateshead-Mag // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:51 PM

alreet lads anyone got a working stream??

  • 27 Ted Bundy // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:51 PM

Hmmmmm. I hope with Debuchy’s return Colo is dropped once again, regardless of how we do today.

  • 28 Honoured2BNUFC // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:51 PM

In my opinion Collocini should no longer be considered Captain-a captain should be a man who should not publicly address that he wants out Asap-a new captain should now be appointed-Tiote has thrived with the responsibility, I’d say he could do well as our captain.

  • 29 santonthenewmaldini // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:52 PM

    @Niafron

It was a beautiful game for France you look so much better when Nasri is nowhere near the team and Ribery and Benzema actually pass to another team mate!! Any time I watch those 3 for France they seem to just pass to each other and no one else!

Cabaye and Pogba were immense in that game

There the conditioning is working … Europe isn’t fun … Europe is’nt fun, Europe disrupts Pardew’s weekly commute, Europe isn’t fun

  • 31 Transfer Sage // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:53 PM

    davetoon

not at all, we don’t have a thin squad at all.

take our starting 11 today (debuhcy for colo) then still have a team of

    elliot
    raylor, saylor, colo, haidara
    anita, bigi, marv
    hba, cisse, sammy

we have a decent back up side….still improvements needed but hardly knackered.

  • 33 niafron // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:54 PM

    @Hatem

Thanks. No one expected our team to do that, especially not me.

Sure, it’s classic for french sportsmen to transform total despair in absolute glory. And vice versa. But this time, must say it was great to watch…

  • 34 askar // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:55 PM

    @Oleg G:
    Good evening Sir!

You are right our goal difference is bad, we will be at the best in top six :-)

  • 35 Ancientcoptic // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:55 PM

I cannot fault the team selection. I think playing Ameobi is playing into Norwich’s hands a bit, but his last few games warrant his selection… so I cannot grumble.

Elmander not playing is good news.

Norwich want to play 5 in midfield against Tiote? lol fair enough… If they want to try and run through the Interceptor, let them try.

I think Mbiwa playing right back is a blessing in disguise, I recall Norwich giving us problems down that flank not so long ago.

My only hope; if we get a 1 goal lead, we do not camp on it for the last 20 minutes. The absolute worst thing you can against Norwich… this is a side that has invested in strikers, not defenders.

  • 36 Benji84 // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:57 PM

disappointed that Colo is playing. Will he a nightmare or do a professional outfil who knows. Lets hope 6 points in the next 2 games

  • 37 Oleg G // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:57 PM

    askar // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:55 PM

And for that we need to win by how much? :)
    Not going to happen.

I will take a 1-0 even. 3 points is all that matters. 1-0 and a good defensive performance.
Of course it would be better to have a bigger win. Something to show some class difference (if it exists).

  • 38 Oleg G // Nov 23, 2013 at 2:59 PM

  • 49 Ted Bundy // Nov 23, 2013 at 3:14 PM

  • 50 Ancientcoptic // Nov 23, 2013 at 3:16 PM

This Norwich side looks open for Counter-attacks… If it were up to me, I would pull Ameobi off now, and put Ben Arfa on.

Do we really need a target man against a side that is weaker on the deck, than in the air.

  • 51 Nufc4Ever // Nov 23, 2013 at 3:17 PM

Yeah, I was alright with us dropping down to defend away against Tottenham after the first goal, but to do so against Norwich? At home? Come on lads. You can do better than that, surely?
    Howay the lads!

  • 52 Ted Bundy // Nov 23, 2013 at 3:18 PM

As much as I want to see Hatem playing, and as much as I want to see him enjoying an open game, and being able to show what he has to offer. I am afraid that he is mentally not there for us. He had a great start to the season and everything went downhill from there.

If he won’t show in practice that he will give 100% in getting back and helping the defenders, he won’t find a place in this squad. We cannot afford him. Not even in a 2-0 over Norwich. If it will be 3-0, fine. Still, he has to show commitment and will to defend. And more importantly, he has to give the ball faster away, otherwise we are just losing the ball in the middle of the pitch and we get a counter attack from the other team.

  • 102 Himanshu Dhingra // Nov 23, 2013 at 3:52 PM

“Only Lyon (19) have more goals from French players than Newcastle (16) in the major Euro leagues this season.”

  • 103 Rotonda heights // Nov 23, 2013 at 3:53 PM

My word what has happened to Pardew? I’ve seen more movement on and off the ball in that 45 mins than I have in an absolute age! Absolutely brilliant 1-2s, triangles, overlapping, going beyond the man with the ball and going for more than 1 goal – superb stuff.

Old Shola is having a renaissance and on days like these he’s unplayable. Lovely balance in the team and with any luck a 3rd or 4th goal could mean party time with Benny and Anita getting on.

Tiote especially, needs to learn when not to shoot. But he has been playing well. Not sure what was going on when he just left the ball that one time. i thought he was having a laugh

  • 105 Thump // Nov 23, 2013 at 3:53 PM

Anybody else reckon that Shola’s been on the bull testosterone? He’s looking more tuned in than I think I’ve seen him in the top flight.

  • 106 santonthenewmaldini // Nov 23, 2013 at 3:53 PM

Well well well what a first half some of the 1 touch passing we have been doing has been excellent movement all over the park better finishing could have seen us 3 or 4 goals up

Just got to concentrate at the back as nearly got caught out by Redmond Sissoko is a right winger he played for Toulouse and France there and causes so much damage as can pretty much beat any full back with pace and power needs to improve his finishing though as thats 3 games in a row he has missed a good chance one on one with the keeper

What to do now though? I think we should keep the same team get the 3rd goal and then bring on Arfa and Cisse and Anita just hope we dont sit back cause Norwich are likely to collapse under anymore pressure dont invite them back into it

  • 107 NUFCarter // Nov 23, 2013 at 3:54 PM

    Thankyou NIGERIA!

  • 108 santonthenewmaldini // Nov 23, 2013 at 3:56 PM

Also does anyone think Faye Downey is having an influence in our team ? Cause they just look so fit especially Shola ? Sounds cynical but i quite like how our players like to get stuck in and kick players up and down the pitch Cabaye , Tiote and Sissoko bully teams quite a lot its good to see bit like a Mourinho original Chelsea team

Faye Downey is without doubt having a very big influence as we are far fitter and sharper than we were last season

  • 114 Junior90 // Nov 23, 2013 at 3:59 PM

Have been a fan for a long time and it’s interesting to see how newcastle changed in just 2 years, as players like Ben Arfa, Cisse, Jonas, Taylor etc are no longer in the first team while players like williamson, ameobi suddenly seem to have a new lease of life.

Anyway, the first half was pretty decent. Lets hope that we don’t collapse in the second half as it’s happened far too often this season

  • 115 Ancientcoptic // Nov 23, 2013 at 4:04 PM

Norwich came straight out with the idea of attacking us down the left… Mbiwa has destroyed that idea. It is back to the drawing board for Hughton.

Giving the ball away far to easily now, someone get their foot on it and start to regain control

  • 127 Dulcinea // Nov 23, 2013 at 4:16 PM

Think we erre very good first half. Lots of positivies. However, i hate the way when we seem to have a 2 goal advantage, we ease off and seem to keep passing it back to Krul who just dinks it upfield and Norwich have possesion then we regain it and back to Krul it goes again. Hate that.

ALL top teams will keep on pressing and pressing, we could easily hammer Norwich 5-0 nil today, were just taking it too easy.

think we do need another option who can hold up the ball as when shola went off we struggled to get out

Remove Colo from the team next weekend and revert to our prior defence. He percolates casualness at the back and was beaten too easily in the air for their goal. His other weakness of being done by a straight ball over the top was exposed in the first-half, too, and his leadership qualities are questionable. Think the only vocal leaders we have are Willo and Shola, in all honesty. Tiote leads well with his physicality and commitment.

    Onwards and upwards!

What does Pardew tell the players at HT

  • 239 ToonDarnSarf // Nov 23, 2013 at 5:04 PM

Colo liability, Remy selfish, Cabaye half fit, Tiote needs to stop shooting, Cisse can’t play the offside trap…I didn’t watch the match…so we lost right?

the reason for the 2nd half , wasnt down to the players ,but their instructions at half time . pardew pardew , when will you learn ? again we got away with it !

    ted

agree with that…back to mbiwa and wilo in CB next week, colo isn’t what he was 2 year ago…not bad just not the best option at the moment.

2 points behind 3rd. *Newcastle fans carry on hating*

    Cheer up you miserable b*stards

Is it just me, or did we look the most likely to score the next goal, at 2-1?

Ben Arfa created a great cross for Cisse, then Remy was greedy, a square ball surely would have gifted Cisse a goal.

Oh well, I guess it must be time to settle back into depression, considering we won, and Pardew made positive subs late in the game.

    Truly miserable eh?

Go get some tampons, it must be that time of month ;)

    TDS

good game, very entertaining to watch

but those complaints are genuine, we won but can still be critical, however the positives far outweigh the negatives for those guys.

what scares me is that Remy will be off at end of the season if not January and we are again left with naught up front. Although the issue in second half wasn’t upfront, we just couldn’t hold the ball in MF.
