Newcastle In For International Striker

It’s not the first time Newcastle have been linked with West Brom striker Shane Long, but there are reports today that the Tyneside club will be in with a bid for the 26 year-old in January.

Shane Long – West Brom’s 26 year-old striker

Newcastle were said to be keen on Shane two years ago, but he ended up moving to West Brom for around £5M on a three-year contract, so he could become a free agent in the summer, and hence the interest from Premier League clubs.

But West Brom do have the option of an extra year, so it will be interesting if they will pick up that option. but if Shane keeps scoring like he did on Monday night against Aston Villa, where he scored two great goals in the first ten minutes, they will pick up that option.

We’ve always thought that Shane would be a good player for Newcastle, because he would give us another option up front – a small(ish) forward with significant speed and skill.

Stoke City and Hull City are also said to be interested in the Irish International striker, who has scored 22 goals in 80 appearances for West Brom, and while at Reading he scored 54 goals in 201 appearances.

Take a look at the two goals Shane scored on Monday night at The Hawthorns.

[dailymotion id=”x17mn11″ mode=”normal” align=”left”]

And Long should be in the starting line-up for West Brom at St. James’ Park on Saturday afternoon, so Alan Pardew can have a close look at the striker, who stands 5’10” tall and has 43 caps and 10 goals for Ireland.

What do you think?

I hope this is the standard before-the-match-unsettle-the-opposition rumour and no more. In a nutshell SL wouldn’t improve the team so there’s no point.

when we lose remy, were going to need another prolific 20-25 goal striker not shane long. He works hard and runs all day but will only ever bag a few goals a season.

I would put all me eggs in one basket and tell joe to pick up the phone to one of his contacts

Lets not get carried away with remy being a 20-25 man. He’s never scored that many in his life, he’s never been prolific at any club he’s been at.
He’s a great player in great form but there’s a long way to go yet.

Long would be a great acquisition. He’s only 26 and still has his peak years well ahead of him. I’d have him over cisse any day.

I still can’t believe that Remy needs 8 goals to match what Ba did in half a season before being played on the wing to accommodate Cisse .

And the fact that same player can’t even get on Chelsea’s bench is even more puzzling . Imagine if we got Ba back in Jan and a couple more quality signings :

    ——————————–Krul—————————–

    –Debuchy——–New CB——–M’biwa——–Santon–

    —Sissoko———Cabaye———–Tiote———Gouff—

    ————————Ba————–Remy——————

    Bench: Elliot,Collo,Haidara,Anita,Guti,Marveaux,Cisse

That squad could do some real damage and have a very strong bench .

Shane long is a smashing little player, bags of speed, and skill, also very good in the air, and very brave, i would do a straight swap with cisse, any day of the week, if cisse is not scoring goals, then he adds no value to the general team play, but shane long is also a very good team player.

Shane Long would be a great addition to the squad, has great pace a good finisher and works his backside off for the team but signing Remy on a permanent deal still has to be the priority

One good point is that he says he only switched to the mackems for the fee to pay his debts.

On Shane Long, if the baggies want to sell him, why would we want him?

I’d take him over cisse, since cisse’s initial 4 months he has been very poor, granted not always in favoured position but the lad has had more than enough time up top and not done well. Whether it’s him or the way we play, he doesn’t seem overly suited to Pardew.

I’d sell cisse and bring in long.

Then if Remy can’t be kept try to replace him with somebody else in the summer, we wont know the remy situation until we see who else shows an interest in the summer.

We could however, try to blackmail him by saying sign in jan or warm the bench and lose your france spot. Not ideal for anyone but could work….or just royaly piss him off so he doesn’t want to stay at all….might be worth the gamble though as i doubt he’ll sign in the summer as plenty others would want him i’d have thought if he carries on this form.

they want to sell him as he won’t sign a contract extension and it runs out this summer, even if they take the one year extension it’s still just another year til he walks on a free.

The ball is in Remy’s court though, short of my blackmail option or offering him 100k a week can’t see why he’d sign until after the world cup when he can assess all his options.

As much as I would love to see Remy sign on I’d be amazed if he actually does as the like’s of Arsenal, Liverpool etc etc will be in for the lad and all of them can and will offer him a hell of a lot more than we could ever hope of putting up.

Let’s face it, when the big boys come calling we are always going to struggle to hold onto our best players, Colo, Remy and Cabaye may well all be off after the world cup so the only answer is to reinvest any money we do get

And I’m fine with that, I do like not paying stupid wages as PL wages are way too high compared to other leagues, especially when you compare some of the talent. So it is to be admired. If more did the same it would be better.

What I fear is colo will go for a low fee, remy is just on loan and cabaye might fetch 20-25 depending on world cup performance. Which leaves us not stacks of cash to replace those 3 and make the improvements we already want to see.

It will be an interesting summer though.

Can you see shola getting a contract extension if he has a good couple months?

Anytime I have watched Long live he has terrorised defenders always plays well against us and always causes the big teams plenty of problems

Got to remember as well we are a step up from West Brom imagine him running onto through balls from Cabaye, Gouffran and Arfa??The move would make him play his heart out every game!Deadly to bring on near the end of a game with tired legs as well

Will not be more than 3 million and is a massive step up from Obertan , Jonas and Marveux he can play left or right wide forward or up top on his own its a bargain

Dont see why people are bitching he is good to go and challenge for a place in the starting eleven wont need anytime to bed in either

    Get him for 3 million
Ince for about the same plus Gosling
    Gomis/Toivenen for about 3 million
Youngish Centreback who can play right back in the Haidara mould

Would be an excellent piece of bargain hunting in the January sales

and Remy seems a clever lad….chose QPR (some say for money), I feel for two reasons.

    1. central role/definite game time in under attacking manager
    2. release clause

It guaranteed he’d get a move if he got lots of goals. He had a two month injury so got lass than he wanted so a loan move to us suited him, prem league exposure before world cup, then can look this summer to see who wants him. He’s no mug.

Yeah the only money we would get is off Cabaye’s sale but Carr has shown the type of player he can get so I’d be more than happy for him to find any replacement.

Not interested in Colo any more, the way he has acted over the past few months has been disgraceful and the sooner he’s gone the better as far as I’m concerned as I was disgusted when he was given the Captains armband on Saturday as Captain don’t act like that and should be the model for all other players to follow.

I’d be very surprised if Shola get’s an extension, as good as he’s been over the past few week’s he simply isn’t able to last a full 90 minutes which surely has to be a basic requirement?

Remy & Cabaye have a tough choice to make IMO .

They want to get as much recognition as they can by playing well for their clubs and scoring goals, However they obviously want to be in the Champions league and playing at the best club possible .

This could be problematic for them as (like Ba) players that would be the first name on the team sheet for us can turn into bench warmers at the biggest clubs in the world .

They won’t be picked if they are not playing for their club no matter how talented they are .

We can do better than Long.
One good game and he’s gold dust.
His career average is a goal every four games. Is he really an upgrade on Goofy ?
He’s a different type of player to Shola so is not a replacement/upgrade for our rejuvenated World Cup striker. IMO Long would give us nothing we don’t have already

If we finished as high as 5th again then these guys would get European football without moving elsewhere.

Not for a single second do I think Remy went to QPR for something other than money.
This feels like justifying Remy’s actions just because he plays for us now.
Remy didn’t have a clue who Redknapp was.
Release clause? He doesn’t have one. If he did, someone would’ve bought him already.

Not at all, I said at the time it made sense for him to go to QPR.

They looked like going down but he had definite starting spot as well as an attacking manager. He didn’t know who redknapp was? the man who got a lot of praise throughout europe for how he has spurs play in the champs league? Of course he will have known who redknapp was.

And he does have an 8 mil release clause, very well publisised by the club, just nobody wanted him for 8mil. It was widely reported to be true and confirmed by his manager.

And I said at the time I’m not fussed if a player goes for money, everyone is motivated by different things in life so he doesn’t need to justify anything

wanted long since he signed for west brom over 2 years ago, think he is a good player and better than gouffy in that role…significantly so that it would be worth getting him? maybe not but looking at the club and who we sign i have no idea if we will do better or not…it’s a bit of a lottery if we sign anyone or everyone in recent windows.

    Jack

I have a feeling they will keep shola, he always seems bound for the exit every few years then something happens and he gets a new deal.

Well good evening ladies and gents
Transfer window is nearly upon us and the usual Bs is starting to fly .Listen we all know by now that the only way linked players are to be signed is if we are to sell one of our top players.
Cabs for the 15-20mill mark and ash may sell. Krull for £20 mill and again we may spend.personally would not want any to leave but a would have forster back no problem, and by the way should have never ever sold him in the first place-2 million what a joke that was

I appreciate he might get more money there, but i don’t think that was his sole reason for going. I think he knew it was an easier stepping stone than we were…as in they will bend to his demaands of release clause as desperate to stay in league and we started giving long contracts and no release as we had just been stung by Ba.

I can see the attraction of Long and two years ago I wanted him too – but times change and we don’t need that style of player any more. I think Goofy has yet to reach his best with us. I’d stick with him for now – good work rate, covers back, seems well adjusted and is keen.
I’d be looking for a Shola replacement instead of Long

the ba situation was our fault and not ba’s imo we took an insurance policy out as he was injury prone but it backfired as he was such a hit and i cant blame ba or remy for going to another club for near double the wages.

personally i think we have a very slim chance of getting him and thats this transfer window if a deal with qpr is allready in place because remy said “we” have a chance to finish in the top 6 ! and if he feels part of the team now then get him before a bigger club comes in and offers more.
