Frustrations Mount At Newcastle

2:19 pm, Monday, December 2nd, 2013 by Ed Harrison · 74 Comments

With Newcastle having so many good players not getting much playing time these days,  it was all inevitable  that players would become a little frustrated at not playing, and some, like Steven Taylor,  have not been able to make the bench.

Rangers v Newcastle United - Pre Season Friendly

Steven Taylor – desperate to play – we don’t blame him

And the Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has mentioned today that a few frustrated Newcastle  players are desperate for a game, and you can be sure that when they do play – they will be going all out to take their chance – just like Mike Williamson famously did in that second half at Everton, when he finally got his chance in the first team.

And Mike has played every minute since that Everton game.

It’s actually a positive sign that players are desperate to play, but with Newcastle dong so well recently and building a very decent squad, players will have to realize that nobody is an automatic starter these days.

Alan Pardew addressed the frustrations among the fringe players at Newcastle today:

“A few have been knocking on my door this morning asking to play,” “Steven Taylor, Hatem Ben Arfa, Papiss Cisse, Vurnon Anita and Jonas Gutierrez – they’re all desperate to play.”

“We’ve got real competition for places. That bodes well. We’re going to need to freshen it up and change it.”

Alan Pardew will make maybe up to four changes in the starting eleven for the game at the Liberty Stadium on Wednesday night, because we have another tough game at Old Trafford the following Saturday.

It will be interesting to see what the team in for Wednesday night.

What would your team be against  Swansea?

At the risk of sounding negative realistically we’ve more chance of a result against Swansea than Manure so surely it would be better to play our’strongest team on Wednesday and make changes for the Saturday game – well maybe.

supposedly Haidara put in a top performance for the under 21s today.

I would have him ahead of Santon currently

Santon has amazing potential and i would love to see him do well, but has he honestly improved in the time he has been here? I dont think so

  • 3 Rotonda heights // Dec 2, 2013 at 2:47 PM

The longer saylor stays away from the first team the better.
In his own head he is brilliant, in reality he is a geordie bramble. Have we really missed both argies and saylor. In a word NO.

Would be good to see Massadio Haidara on Wednesday.

  • 6 Transfer Sage // Dec 2, 2013 at 2:56 PM

I think saylor is a lot better than bramble, or maybe that should read was. The lad was very good but has not made more than 14 apps in a season for 5 years now….he is alway ‘rusty’. So the odd little mistake he would make happens more often.

I like him and his passion, he loves to play for us, but he is the CB that needs to be upgraded for a big, physical brute…who could then compete with wilo.

Like you I’m a definite maybe about playing our best team against Swansea.

However, the other way to look at it is could we beat Swansea with MYM for Colo, Anita for Cabaye, Cisse for Remy and HBA for Goofy or Sissoko? I think we could. All of those players would be busting a gut to stay in against ManU.

Our best chance of beating ManU is with our best eleven and key players with a weeks rest.

One of Pards toughest shouts this season up to now.

  • 8 GoofyFooted // Dec 2, 2013 at 3:07 PM

I could see this lineup on Wednesday:

    Debuchy Colo Willo Santon
    Tiote Anita
    HBA Ameobi Goofy

  • 9 BeeGuy // Dec 2, 2013 at 3:12 PM

The Swans made Man City look “ponderous” through the mid-field. So wholesale changes would not be wise unless Swans need to do same. If Bony & Micchu are injured, this will be a good chance for a result.

I think Manu may be a bit more pedestrian than SWFC, so there is where I might make changes.

  • 10 Spotlight Kid // Dec 2, 2013 at 3:15 PM

Taylor is a wannabe mini Big John McNamee, but without the god-given ability Big John had to ‘take out’ players on the ref’s blind side (ask Jackie Charlton about it). I seem to remember him scoring two own goals in one game as well…

  • 11 martoon // Dec 2, 2013 at 3:17 PM

bills-son @7 – Yes you make a strong case for change. It is a tricky one for Pards but that is why he is paid the big bucks ;) Of course if he gets it wrong he will get slated on here – but then what’s new.

  • 12 Yohan Kebab // Dec 2, 2013 at 3:18 PM

I would go all out guns blazing attack against swansea. over 90 mins we are bound to score more than them

then against man u keep it tight and hit them on the counter

we are going to need to do some rotation either way

    my teams for each match

    Debuchy Colo Mbiwa Santon
    sissoko anita cabaye gouffran
    remy hba

    man u

    Debuchy willo colo haidara
    sissoko cabaye tiote jonas
    gouffran remy

  • 13 Jamiemac // Dec 2, 2013 at 3:18 PM

Remy looked tired vs WBA so I’d be very very surprised if he isn’t rested vs Swans. Santon and Goofy always work really hard week in week out so I wouldn’t be surprised if they were rested although Dummett and Haidara both played today so I’d imagine Pardew plans to play Santon.

Sissoko never looks tired. His stamina is incredible. Wouldn’t be surprised if he was able to play every minute of every game

  • 14 Yohan Kebab // Dec 2, 2013 at 3:24 PM

remy could do with a rest

sissoko gouffran debuchy look like they could run for days

  • 15 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Dec 2, 2013 at 3:26 PM

They are frustrated because they want to be in a winning team.
Thats the way it should be itching to get involved but you cannot just give them a game because for the sake of it
    Question is
Would they be as frustrated if we are on a losing run?

Anita, HBA, Cisse, MBiwa, Hadairra and Taylor will be involved somewhere sometime in the coming month as games come thick and fast. bound to be injuries, bookings – think Tiote and Cabaye are one away from a ban.

Another argument is how many players do you bring in if any in the window ????

  • 16 Transfer Sage // Dec 2, 2013 at 3:28 PM

I think we need another forward. Cisse off the boil a good 16months now and remy/shola both out of contract with us come summer, so be good to have one in during jan.

I’d also like a good wide man, hard worker but skillful too. After gouf and sissoko (not natural wide men) we are down to HBA then obertan/sammy. So another winger please.

But anything other than that is a massive bonus.

  • 17 70TWO // Dec 2, 2013 at 3:30 PM

I hope Pardew will be taking it one game at a time, with the forward momentum Swansea generate it may be wise to reinstate Mbiwa at the back, but I am not sure who for. We need a solid midfield and a creative duo up front to keep their backs in defense. I think a draw will be a good result to grind out at Swansea, using non-regular starters and then bringing back the in form squad against ManU.

    ——— Gouffy – HBA
    Anita – Tiote – Cabaye – Sissoko
    Haidara – Collo – Mbiwa – Debuchy

  • 18 Yohan Kebab // Dec 2, 2013 at 3:32 PM

alternatively we could go balls out for the very achieveable 3 points at swansea and then anything against man u is a bonus

  • 19 belgrade fan // Dec 2, 2013 at 3:34 PM

Anita is not same type of player like Cabaye. And he doesnt offer what Cabs does. Marveaux and HBA are more similar to Cabs. And as all of you love Dummet bcs he is local lad he is not better than Santon or Haidara. Remy needs to play. He is a pro player and 4 days r enough to take a rest. Why to change winning team against usually great Swans who has 4 players out and 3rd game in 6 days. We need to take this chance

  • 20 RedMissionBells // Dec 2, 2013 at 3:34 PM

In my opinion, we must off load Jonás Gutiérrez before his value depreciates further. The lad has stamina but he is nothing compared to Sissoko. Sissoko is strong, robust and also has stamina.

I also think we should offload Cisse, preferably to another league. He looks like he has lost passion in football. After scoring that wonder goal against Cech, his ego got the better of him. No doubt his finishing is top quality when he first joined us.

With the sale of Jonas and Cisse, we can bring back Demba Ba. Ba is a proven scorer and will do well alongside Remy. Teams that play at a higher level will be able to mark out Ameobi, hence making him less effective. Also, Ameobi does not score enough.

  • 21 belgrade fan // Dec 2, 2013 at 3:36 PM

And Shola is only CF who never scores. 1 goal for a season. Just imagine that we have CF on his place who scored 4-5 where we should be now. I just cant accept we play with 1 goal for season CF

  • 22 70TWO // Dec 2, 2013 at 3:39 PM

Whatever we do at Swansea, we will stand a better chance by parking the bus in front of the goal and hope for a break away. I forgot about Gutierrez, although he wont be up to speed he will do the job.
    ——— Gouffran – HBA
    Gutierrez – Tiote – Sissoko – Anita
    Haidara – Collo – Willo – Debuchy

  • 23 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Dec 2, 2013 at 3:39 PM

Maybe 2 or 3 in in key positions – another creative midfielder would be good – but I think we do not need to many as the squad is/looks a happy squad and I would not like to see that disrupted.

  • 24 belgrade fan // Dec 2, 2013 at 3:41 PM

Sell Jonas, ST, Rayan T (I know, feel sorry for him but NUFC on 1st place), that Amalfitano, Obertan, Vuckic(will never play here and is nothing spec), buy 1 CF, 1 good winger and 1 CB and we r top 4 team

  • 25 Rotonda heights // Dec 2, 2013 at 3:44 PM

“They have an opportunity and, like Williamson has proved, if you get an opportunity, then I will show faith and keep picking the player. Everybody has got an opportunity, an equal opportunity.

But if your name is Colo the above doesn’t apply !!

  • 26 toonarmydownsouth // Dec 2, 2013 at 3:47 PM

Really? Given his influence over the last 5 games you completely drop shola from both the Swansea and Manure games?

  • 27 NEWEXPATMAGPIE // Dec 2, 2013 at 3:48 PM

This is a fine balancing act for Pardew ?

If he rests certain players for the game at Swansea on wednesday evening and we lose, there will be those on here who will be full of criticism and give him stick? Maybe deservedly so, maybe also uncalled for?

If he fails to make changes for what looks, on paper, an easier game than Old Trafford, and we win but those close to a ban get yellow cards and are ruled out of the Manure game, he will be lambasted and called a Lullo too!

So whatever happens on Wednesday and on Saturday is,nt really going to have any difference to some of the reactions on here.

Win both, no-one will be criticising, but no-one will be giving credit for it either !\

It is very difficult to call !

  • 28 Rooster // Dec 2, 2013 at 3:53 PM

Crazy old game this football lark, last season we would have lost the games we are winning, the season before we were getting the rub of the green, we have won games not by much but the table shows us above some of the massive spenders in the summer window, that is not to say we still should not have bought beacuse i believe we should have, and i also believe we should bring some in the winter window, the over the line patter sunk the place out in the summer, it bugged the hell out of me, and while Shola is playing well and fair play as is Williamson, Shola who still hasnt scored needs to start bagging, the frenchies have the franchise at the moment and great it is, it shuts a few gobs up including my own as i had a few digs at Sissoko for not imposing himself on the game and also to improve his physicality, that seems to be getting better at the moment for sure, i know i aint the only one surprised at our position at this moment in time, maybe 99 per cent are, but hey ho, am well chuffed with it, and if they are proving us all wrong then fair play to everyone involved.

  • 29 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Dec 2, 2013 at 3:54 PM

Santon…if you are here mate :-) it was not really what I meant this morning – but maybe if you read this article by Ed maybe you will get my point.

…or else go back and read it again. I think you just misunderstood my point.

  • 30 belgrade fan // Dec 2, 2013 at 3:54 PM

If AP wants to rest players give him light training. This is huge chance to win them bcs they r tired – injured. Remy, Cabs- need to play. To win Swansea on their Liberty will be huuugggeeeeee boost. And this is THE BEST time toplay them. After, vs Manure- well nobody will be angry if we loose. They r better team (maybe).

  • 31 Transfer Sage // Dec 2, 2013 at 3:59 PM

I would simply only change players if they aren’t 90% fit….why change a winning team just in case somebody is tired.

Trust the fitness people and reports and go off that, if all 11 can play both do that, if a few need to be trained as low on energy do that….simple.

  • 32 belgrade fan // Dec 2, 2013 at 4:00 PM

And i would rather have Cabs or Sissoko to get 5th yellow and we win this game. Then vs Manure give chance Anita, marveaux etc. This is our chance, we r in great form, and I want strongest team vs Swans

  • 33 Yohan Kebab // Dec 2, 2013 at 4:02 PM

oversight on my part i completely forgot about him!

i would have shola in for remy against swansea, remy could do with a rest

  • 34 belgrade fan // Dec 2, 2013 at 4:02 PM

Thats what Im talking about. 4 days are more than enough. Give them even a one day rest.
And than in Jan when we buy Menez, Kaboul, Matuiddi and sign Remy on permanent they will time to rest.
I know , this was stronger than me

  • 35 Transfer Sage // Dec 2, 2013 at 4:02 PM

What I think it shows is wholesale changes to teams, like sunderlan and spurs have done doesn’t always help as too much change too quickly.

What I think it also shows is that a price tag is irrelevant. Good scouting and signing not just a good player, but a good player who can play the way you need him in your team is key.

A lot of signings seem to be done on the basis of a video game….almost like going off a guys stats and not how those states relate to what is needed for you team.

  • 36 NEWEXPATMAGPIE // Dec 2, 2013 at 4:05 PM

I would like us to win Both Belgrade >

If we rest say Cabaye Tiote and Williamson and maybe even Collo ? These are all Prof players and will understand the reason why?

If we got SIX points from our next two, imagine if you will the Headlines. I would be happy with Four points but am hoping that we don’t endi up losing both ?

  • 37 Transfer Sage // Dec 2, 2013 at 4:05 PM

I’m not one for resting people just in case they get tired…by all means rest if a player is tired or showing a little fitness issue, but resting to prevent tiredness when a player is fully fit is just bizzare in my book.

But it seems to be a policy used in a lot of sports so maybe i’m wrong. I just think it would be better to miss 2 days training instead of a key game.

  • 38 toonarmydownsouth // Dec 2, 2013 at 4:07 PM

Personally I’d rest Shola and keep him for Manure, pretty sure there back four still have nightmares about him and Ba!!

  • 39 belgrade fan // Dec 2, 2013 at 4:09 PM

Yes. Light training, 1 day rest, more than enough. Or give them some NO reactor.

Why to change unless somebody is injured? To change 4 key players in same time is NEVER good. and anita is not Cabaye type. Remy, Cabs- need to play. They r winning games. Not Shola or Dummett

  • 40 Jamiemac // Dec 2, 2013 at 4:11 PM

Outrageous to say Shola shouldn’t play because he’s not scoring. As long as the team are scoring which they are it shouldnt matter whether its Shola, Remy, Tiote or Krul who’s getting them. If the goals and chances start drying up then maybe a reshuffle should be considered.

    Vs Swans

    VS Manu

Cabs does need a rest at some point but I wouldn’t want to drop him as there is nobody near suitable for the role he plays. Guti always plays well vs Manu and will be useful for us defensively.

  • 41 toonarmydownsouth // Dec 2, 2013 at 4:13 PM

Lads no need to drop Willo or Santon, both these lads were happy playing games in quick succession and have never struggled with the turn around
Same goes for debs gouff and tiote

Remy doesn’t look 100% so cisse needs to up his game this week as does HBA as both will need to play a role, MYM and Colo to battle it out and sorry Taylor but you need to keep kicking your heels lad

  • 42 belgrade fan // Dec 2, 2013 at 4:14 PM

Very good, but would put Remy instead of Shola. If Michu and Boni dont play, it will be easier to defend free kicks and corners. HBA for me is a must. He knows he needs to take his chance and he will give his 100%

  • 43 toonarmydownsouth // Dec 2, 2013 at 4:14 PM

Big fan of Shola but your dreaming if you think the big man can play 3 games in a week!

  • 44 belgrade fan // Dec 2, 2013 at 4:17 PM

The best time for HBA. Fresh, knows need to change his attitude dince AP show him he is going to warm the bench if doesnt change, Swans r tired-injured….. must play for me

  • 45 Transfer Sage // Dec 2, 2013 at 4:18 PM

like i say, see how fit he is…if he seems fine on wed play him, no need to make decisions without seeing how they train.

whatever side we put out imsure there is a good reason for resting certain ones

  • 46 Jamiemac // Dec 2, 2013 at 4:20 PM

Haha I originally wrote Cisse for the Swans match but really struggling to think of what he brings to the team at the moment which is a shame :( And as I mentioned earlier Remy looked knackered at the weekend so needs a rest. Maybe if HBA did well vs Swans then start him in the hole for Manu behind Remy.

  • 47 MosesNUFC // Dec 2, 2013 at 4:20 PM

    some interesting team lineups…
    mine for swansea:
    Debuchy Willo M’Biwa Santon
    Sissoko Cabaye Tiote Gouffran
    Ameobi Ben Arfa

    man u:
    Debuchy Willo Colo Santon
    Sissoko Cabaye Tiote Gouffran
    Ameobi Remy

  • 49 belgrade fan // Dec 2, 2013 at 4:23 PM

  • 50 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Dec 2, 2013 at 4:23 PM

TS…my point was earlier that you need to make the best out of the depth you have en a squad – every player have a part to play and no game is alike.

…it is all about maximizing the the output of each game and keep it fresh. It’s a long season and you cannot just make changes when you are loosing (be proactive instead of being reactive)

It is not about who start, but also about the bench and how you use it.

I definitely disagree with you on this matter. For me it is just the wrong way to go about it :)

  • 52 toonarmydownsouth // Dec 2, 2013 at 4:26 PM

I know what you mean mate!
Personally think we need Shola for Manure, there defence is there to be bullied but for me I’d certainly give cisse a start vs Swansea, he looked lively against Norwich
Horrible to break up a winning team but for me it will be a test to see if Pardew has learnt a big lesson from Europe, it’s great to see consistency but we also need to see if were flexible as well

  • 53 Transfer Sage // Dec 2, 2013 at 4:29 PM

I don’t think there should be no changes just because we are winning. My point was more that we shouldn’t make changes in case of tiredness developing.

If a certain player is more suited to how we will play against an opposition then make a change by all means.

  • 54 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Dec 2, 2013 at 4:31 PM

TS….ohh maybe I just misunderstood what you meant mate :)

    *gotta grab some dinner! Later!

  • 55 toonarmydownsouth // Dec 2, 2013 at 4:33 PM

How can you say we’re not rotating the squad and not using it’s depth when players like Shola and Williamson are keeping players like cisse and Taylor/Colo out the squad and players like Gouffran and Sissoko are keeping natural wide men like HBA and Marveux/Guti out??

As for the bench, he’s using it extremely effectively with players like Anita coming off with a real point to prove

You say change the team to be Proactive instead of reactive and keep things fresh, he’s made wholesale changes this season to keep things fresh and done that whilst implementing a new style of play

  • 56 toonarmydownsouth // Dec 2, 2013 at 4:36 PM

I think that’s the exact reason he will change it against Swansea, they have a slow back line and i think he’ll try and use cisse to hurt them, or he’ll give shola an hour as a battering ram to wear a very worn team down then go on the attack the last 30

well this is probably pardews hardest task yet. what is probably causing this is the world cup is next year.

the good thing now is we are in the period where their will be lots of midweek games so he will be probably making a few changes.

I do believe myself that he will be making a few changes on Wednesday which could see anita HBA and cisse all starting the players I would say he will drop are goufran shola and cabaye or tiote.

if their was any player that I would want to see dropped it would be santon dropped for hadaira.

    my team vs swans
    debuchy_ colo_ willo_ hadaira
    sissoko_ anita _cabaye_ HBA
but I think he will not drop santon and will prefer to drop shola.

    _____shola_ remy
again I think santon will remain.

  • 60 ToonDarnSarf // Dec 2, 2013 at 4:49 PM

Nice revenue table. So basically, that’s exactly where we’d expect to be! We should hardly be above Everton when we’ve been relegated recently and that have had a series of top finishes.

Somehow, I doubt that will put the issue to bed though…

  • 61 ToonDarnSarf // Dec 2, 2013 at 4:54 PM

Isn’t it simple? Assess the players who have knocks or are tired and rotate your squad accordingly…

Don’t get people demanding Haidara plays over Santon. We saw him for a few games last season and people have made their judgements based on that?? The same people were demanding Dummett played over Santon no doubt.

I definitely wouldn’t start HBA against Man Utd so it’s Swansea or nothing for him I think. Nice to have competition for places!

  • 62 DevonToon // Dec 2, 2013 at 4:57 PM

My team for weds… krul, debs, willo, maps, santon
A settled back four is key to success…
    Socks, tiote, anita, guti
    Remy, Cisse

Maybe ben arfa for remy… cant make my mind up.

  • 63 89Norcal // Dec 2, 2013 at 5:01 PM

Have Swansea got any legitimate threat on the wings?

I know they have Dyer who is quick but to me it would seem like an opportunity to work in Hatem. I think it’s the central defense we should worry about; which is why I’m shaky on using Colo so quickly. He did get caught out vs Norwich.

But of course there’s no way you can rip Sissoko or Gouffran off at the moment. Definitely as a sub tho Hatem should play vs Swansea.

  • 64 Goodfella // Dec 2, 2013 at 5:15 PM

Just been reading that, I think that might be her way of speedy up his departure from newcastle and I now expect him to use this as an excuse to leave in January not the end of the season.

  • 65 ToonDarnSarf // Dec 2, 2013 at 5:17 PM

Swansea will just pass, pass and pass again right? So it’s important that we have players who can run and harry in midfield. Cabaye, Tiote and Sissoko are great if they’re fully fit, otherwise I’d see Jonas coming into the equation. Agree with earlier poster that Remy looked a little tired on Saturday so I wonder if that’s a one-off or he might need resting to get the best out of him. Wouldn’t object to playing Ameobi up-front alongside HBA with Goofy, Cabaye, Tiote and Sissoko/Jonas in midfield. Need experience in defence so I don’t see past the same back 5 as last time. For this game I could see MYM and Colo working but they haven’t played to well together before.

Without doubt if Haidara hadn’t been nobbled by now 1of 2 things would have happened – Santon would have upped his game, or Haidara would be a regular starter now. I don’t think it’s a big coincidence Santon is playing well lately with Haidara and Dummet breathing down his neck.

Probably already posted but funny if true, got it off Twitterton

    Link will no doubt fail….

Toondarnsarf – posted much the same yesterday after the game. We face Swansea at a bad time for them, their mid is ripe for being ran ragged by fresh legs keen to get a regular spot. Golden opp for the top bench players.

Have Swansea got any legitimate threat on the wings?

How funny would it be if the Mackems had to look for there third manager of the season before Christmas!!!!!

they are proffesional footballers and are trained to peak fitness – same team on Wednesday and Saturday. any player that cant manage that needs a new proffession. I remember playing 3 games in one day on our yearly Easter tour to Blackpool and I still hit the town afterwards hahahaha

This isn’t FIFA 2099 or whatever you clown . It’s the real thing. They are all top athletes and on occasion one has a slight edge on the other. To call NUFC players disrespectful names isn’t funny or clever . Take another bite on yer cheeseburger you fat slug and leave real sport to real sportsmen.

With regard to the 2 upcoming games.
Swansea are f’d ,I would experiment with changes against them on Wednesday , don’t fear them at all.

Pick last Saturdays team against Manure next Sat and go all out at the bastids from the get go,they are ripe for the taking and we have the boys and the spirit to really do them.
