Alan Pardew Springs Surprise – Newcastle Unchanged

6:48 pm, Wednesday, December 4th, 2013 by Ed Harrison · 474 Comments

swanseanufc emblem

Alan Pardew has made a bit of a shock selection and named an unchanged side for Swansea tonight, and the logic is probably that Alan believes we have an excellent chance of getting all 3 points tonight, and plays his strongest side, and will make changes for the early kick-off game at Old Trafford on Saturday.

On the substitutes’ bench is 20 year-old full-back Massadio Haidara, and he is joined by Rob Elliot, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Vurnon Anita, Sammy Ameobi, Gabriel Obertan and Papiss Cisse.

That could mean that Massadio could get his first premier league start of the season at Old Trafford, and we have to think he has been impressive in training to even make the bench, with so much competition around.

Newcastle have a great chance against a Swansea side weakened by injury, and the lads will be going all out for our fifth Premier League win in a row, and if we can do that, we could be very handily placed tonight in the league table, and above out current 6th place.

For Swansea, former Newcastle winger Wayne Routledge is on the bench.

Howard Webb of Yorkshire is the referee.

Surprised at the lack of Ben-Arfa.

  • 2 Jamiemac // Dec 4, 2013 at 6:49 PM

    HBA not on bench

  • 3 tequilamag // Dec 4, 2013 at 6:49 PM

Not sure it really is surprising.

  • 4 Big Pappa Cissé // Dec 4, 2013 at 6:49 PM

No problem with us being unchanged , I just hope Cabaye & Sissoko keep their heads and don’t make any rash challenges .

We will need them both if we want something from Old Trafford .

  • 5 tequilamag // Dec 4, 2013 at 6:50 PM

@1 HBA not making the bench is a surprise, starting 11 is not.

  • 6 DevonMag // Dec 4, 2013 at 6:51 PM

HBA not on the bench!? What gives, Pardew? Hope there isn’t more to that. HBA hardly the kind of personality to take that one lying down?

    Unless he’s injured?

  • 7 Ted Bundy // Dec 4, 2013 at 6:51 PM

Intriguing choice. All out for this match, if we win, no pressure on the Man U match, so can experiment and let loose a little, is the thinking, I reckon.

  • 8 bills-son // Dec 4, 2013 at 6:51 PM

Sensible decision imo by Pardew to go with an unchanged team.

We’ll soon find out why HBA isn’t on the bench.

  • 9 Ted Bundy // Dec 4, 2013 at 6:54 PM

Perhaps, as somebody noted earlier, Pardew isn’t happy with HBAs lack of professionalism when readying to bring him on in the dying seconds against West Brom. Maybe.

  • 10 Mister Tuff // Dec 4, 2013 at 6:54 PM

I am very surprised it’s an unchanged team. Percy must be hoping for a couple of goals lead and then park the bus/use subs when we’re ahead. Shola surely cannot play 3 games in a week. Bright side is Percy is going for it.

  • 11 corktoon88 // Dec 4, 2013 at 6:56 PM

Hba isn’t on bench as pardew knows this is not a match he will use him. He will start against man utd without a doubt IMO. He’ll be fresh and raring to go. Great management from pardew here to get the best out of him for next game

  • 12 JDdubai // Dec 4, 2013 at 6:59 PM

First11 not bad, subs look good upto midfield but Sammy, Obertan and Cisse as our attacking options shows where we are weakest still. Would you really want to rely on 1 of them coming on to snatch or make a goal if you are losing?

January recruitments for attack are a must…but bring on tonight, expecting a good performance and hoping for 3 points..

  • 13 blacknwhite yorkshireman // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:01 PM

Unsurprising team, probably fair enough. Madness not to have Ben Arfa on the bench though, he’s either injured or spat the dummy, bad news either way imo because there will come a time when his class will be needed

  • 14 Ted Bundy // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:03 PM

Looking forward to another Shola masterclass now!

  • 15 toonbrother // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:04 PM

Look out for the following classic Coloshitty traits:

    1. Not contesting headers
    2. Drifting to the full back position to heroically help Santon and Debuchy even though they did perfectly fine without his help against Chelsea and Spurs
    3. Diving into tackles unnecessarily
    4. Charging out of defence unnecessarily
    5. Being a complete and utter liability

Look out for these 5 traits.Cheers

  • 16 NUFCKingALLdWAY // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:04 PM

What no HBA! That’s an outrage!!!

  • 17 toonarmydownsouth // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:06 PM

    Devon Mag
“HBA hardly the kind of personality to take that one lying down?”

Good might give him the kick up the ars3 to jump start his season

Maybe just a knock, but if it’s because he’s had a paddy about places then he’s right to leave him out altogether

  • 18 toonbrother // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:06 PM

Chances of NUFC collecting 3 points with Coloshitty in defence. Slim

Chances of NUFC getting a clean sheet tonight with Coloshitty in defence. None

Bench not looking so good if we need a goal :( .

‘Ben Arfa’ is trending on Twitter, goes to show what a surprise this is.

Pardew is inviting Murphy’s law upon himself, if this is indeed a Managerial decision.

How can a wizard like Ben Arfa not make the bench? he would make any other bench in the world, such is his unique talent that can change a game, if really needed.

Not really a big surprise – a shame, but not a surprise!

…wonder if AP suffers from some sort of fear of what might happen if he makes changes or maybe it is just a case of good old “old mindset” ;) lol

  • 34 toonarmydownsouth // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:17 PM

If Shola of Remy get injured then we’d be in the same situation seeing as neither HBA nor Marv are CF’s

  • 35 The Eternal Optimist // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:18 PM

god there’s some miserable sods on here. We’re the form team in the league and we’re 45 minutes from kick off. Shola has been a beast recently, Remy likes playing with him and Goofy is a dark horse. The first 11 is great and hopefully will put us a couple up before we put the likes of anita and Mbiwa on to see out the last 30 minutes.

Cheer up and let’s try and support the team til circa 10pm, then we’ll know if the line up was shit.

can you imagine a fifth straight win. merciless times, watch out for snipers on rooftops and pianos falling from the sky because someone will have to even it out somehow.

  • 41 The Eternal Optimist // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:20 PM

We haven’t needed HBA for ages, we’re more efficient without him and he’s a luxury unfortunately. Support the first 11 and whoever is needed in the 90 minutes. Hope shola makes us all eat our words again.

  • 42 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:20 PM

Just read today that Remy was one of the players Laudrup was looking at before they went for Bony!

…wonder if the court case hanging over Remy’s head was the decision maker? (for other teams as well)

  • 43 toonarmydownsouth // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:20 PM

Ball not even kicked yet and were going to lose because shola is starting and HBA isn’t on the bench???

    Ffs give it a rest

  • 44 corktoon88 // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:21 PM

    @bpc

If they get injured we set up for a draw. A point would be good result no? 13/15 some return

  • 45 The Eternal Optimist // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:21 PM

thing is, if the first xi were fit, and all wanted to play, you’d play them! This team has won 4 in 4, who in their right mind changes that if all the lads are ready to go.

  • 50 Big Pappa Cissé // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:23 PM

    @ tads

Talk about putting words in peoples mouths .

No one has said we are going to lose, some of us are just concerned about our attacking options from the bench that is all . Touch wood we don’t need subs unless we are running the clock down, but this is football and anything can happen .

  • 51 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:23 PM

    *us = use

  • 52 jimmysmith // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:23 PM

Obertan and Sammy in preference to Benny and Jonas. The plot thickens. Guttierez now considered a central mid and Benny surplus?

  • 53 JackButler // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:23 PM

We all wanted to see us winning games while playing good football, which we have done over the past month but people are bitching and moaning because their favorite player isn’t on the bench when for all we know he has picked up an injury.

FFS lads get behind the side that is starting and enjoy the bloody game

  • 54 Toon Tang // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:24 PM

so whos their main goalscorer then?

  • 55 AmericanGeordie // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:24 PM

I understand everyone’s opinions expressed above. However, I’m still shocked that AP didn’t take this opportunity to rotate the club: Keep squad players happy. Fresh legs, maybe run Swans into ground on their 3rd game in 6 days?

I would have definitely rested Cabaye & Sissoko ahead of the trip to Old Trafford with both of them of 4 yellows.

Oh well. I hope it works out.

    HWTL!!!

  • 56 toonarmydownsouth // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:25 PM

    BPC
Why? Marv hasn’t played for ages and Benny has been shite, Sammy started the season well so why shouldn’t he be there in front of Marv?

Pardews talked non stop these last few weeks about if a player is giving 100% in training and impressing then they will get a chance, if a player that should be at the least on the bench is getting left out the match day squad chances are there’s a damn good reason for that

  • 57 santonthenewmaldini // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:25 PM

Just goes to show that we still have a lack of depth as what if Sissoko,Gouffran or Cabaye have to go off?thats our midfield flair gone as Sammy and Obertan are not going to do very much

I can see why Arfa and Marv are not getting picked in the team but surely they should be on the bench ??!they can win games and you would think both would be busting a gut to get into the team ??

  • 58 TheToonKing // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:25 PM

Now way will HBA start against Man Utd….we’ll need everyone working their socks off in that games.

this was the game to start HBA…run at a weaker tired defense, not sure what’s up.

  • 59 tequilamag // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:27 PM

Jesper, over the course of the season change is inevitable.I dont have an issue with your proactive argument I was just wondering what specific players you think should be dropped. Remember Pardew has made changes this seasons. HBA was a starter at the start of the season and Colo came back last week was an unenforced change.

  • 60 Big Pappa Cissé // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:28 PM

    @ tads

Marv played for the reserves or the under 21′s against Chelsea a few days ago so he must be fit enough for a sub appearance .

If HBA is injured then fair play but if not it is a strange decision

  • 61 Ancientcoptic // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:28 PM

    The Eternal Optimist

Just because we have been winning without Ben Arfa recently, does not mean we may not end up in a situation where his talents may not come in useful from the bench.

Swansea love to hold the ball and pass it around, I have no problem with keeping a winning side together, even if it does involve a lot of long ball… the gaffer has earned the right, but, no Ben Arfa (Plan B) on the bench? very very bold move indeed.

The last 4 games have been wonderland, but right now, we can only beat the next team in front of us. I just pray we are not stuck a goal down after 70 minutes, and lacking creativity.

I have no gripe with the starting 11, the bench, I cannot help but feel you know who should be there. (That is if Ben Arfa has not walked out, or got injured or something)

  • 62 santonthenewmaldini // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:28 PM

Admittedly we have been playing some of our best football since the 6 game winning streak of 5th place season without Arfa and Marveux so there might be something in that….

  • 63 Douglas // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:29 PM

Our luck has to run out sometime. 1-1 tonight? Mind you, if we could win we could go to MANUR and just give it our all. Pardew will have to make changes Saturday

Mate we’ve won the last four, Benny’s barely set foot on the pitch, and most the time remy or shola have come off it’s been for Anita
If anything at least players like Sammy have a point to prove and might actually look hungry if called upon
How do even know if there fit to travel?

tequila…it is not about specific players it’s about how you approach a game and a season!

…before there have been alot of of excuses about injuries, squad not big enough and too many matches in a short period of time,

Now we have a squad big enough when you look at the games we have to play, not many injuries, but we are playing the same team over and over again.

There has been changes over the season true – but it looks like AP has been looking for “his winning formula” and doesn’t want to look back! It’s an opinion – maybe not shared with some of you, but it’s still an opinion ;)

  • 76 tequilamag // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:37 PM

Jesper I think there are merits in keeping a winning side, but there are also drawbacks. Th fact that we have been largely unscathed with injuries to or strongest players has allowed \Pardew to pick a settled side which is full of confidence and getting good results. The big drawaback is it`s a ballache for the players not getting a start. Not sure we are at the level of say Man C and Chelsea for squad strength and can afford to rotate great players for more great players.

  • 81 The Eternal Optimist // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:42 PM

there you go lads! support the team, we panic and condemn far too hastily. I’d have preffered Benny on the bench, but then i’d love him to work harder and make it impossible for him not to play…. but there it is.

  • 82 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Dec 4, 2013 at 7:43 PM

tequila…I get your pont, but I actually think it’s very inportant for a team our size to maximize hte size and strenght of our whole squad if we are to make an impact.

…we have 38 h´games to play in the PL alone and you top that with the Carling Cup and the FA Cup. We need all hands on deck and as many as possible in form I think.

A concern for me still this season is that AP leaves in very late when making subs and they rarely have an impact. For me this id just as important as who start.

I am a bit afraid if we loose tonight (hope we don’t) cause we all know what the mood will be like in here if it happens!

    Hello everyone!

HBA should be in our first team and he is even not on our bench? That really is surprising decision.

IMO if Pardew brings HBA and Mapou then benches Shola and Willo, do I still feel confident? YES! I am absolutely sure we will keep winning with HBA and Mapou in our starting XI.

Pardew is really unfair this time in my humble opinion :-)

Anyway, win tonight:2-0, goals from Remy and Gouff :-) :-)

Swansea have turned up to play football, we have turned up to try and get lucky.

JackButler, fair point… but just look at how the possession is panning out. Teams mostly set their impression for the game in the first 5 minutes.

The tactics must be to lull Swansea into a fall sense of security, then get a goal against the run of play, I can only assume.

  • 127 ToonDarnSarf // Dec 4, 2013 at 8:07 PM

Not sure why people think Pardew should comment about players that aren’t playing, especially a player who hasn’t exactly been contributing much recently.

Some people call it “shocking” that he hasn’t rotated, others would have said similar if he had.

As JB said, fans should just get behind the team. Everyone’s entitled to their opinions and they may well not agree with the manager but after kick-off, I only care about the 11 on the pitch.

  • 128 Ted Bundy // Dec 4, 2013 at 8:08 PM

Are you still complaining about Ed writing too many stories that are linked to Newcastle football club?

    Ancient,
It happened to Shaka Hislop while at Newcastle. Filling up at petrol station on Barrack Road, some kids started racially abusing him, then when they realised it was Shaka they went and asked for his autograph.

It is one of the stories he regularly tells as an ambassador for SRTRC.

If it happened with him, why not with Ba. Plenty of morons are also football fans.

We should go 433 with Cabs, Tiote and Sissoko in the middle with Shola up top with Gouffran and Remy wide forwards again and go for it cause their defence is all over the place when we actually attack them

  • 200 Ted Bundy // Dec 4, 2013 at 8:37 PM

Bad clearance by Gouffy, when he had time to chest it down, then the players slow to get out, then Krul flapping at it.

An indifferent half really, that we’ve come off down due to one bad period of play.

Isn’t the spark there from the last few games.

  • 206 ToonDarnSarf // Dec 4, 2013 at 8:38 PM

Do you critics know anything about football??

Swansea can pass virtually every team into oblivion yet that was their first shot. Mistake from Krul, hardly an indication that we’re playing badly! We’ve been set up to counter attack which would be pretty standard away to a team like Swansea.

  • 207 Graeme // Dec 4, 2013 at 8:38 PM

Santon should have had that but collo was ball watching and as last defender, should have had it away!!!

  • 208 Hatem's better than Messi // Dec 4, 2013 at 8:38 PM

It’s a tactic that works against Swansea.
Eventually they will overpass it in a dangerous area.

I still think we’ll win this.
Perhaps this will make them wake up.

  • 209 Lilongwe Geordie // Dec 4, 2013 at 8:38 PM

We have had more shots, more shots on target, and more shots inside the box. Yes they have dominated possession, but they have won possession every home league game they have had this season, and only won 1 of those games. Still another half to go.

  • 210 Spreadthetoon // Dec 4, 2013 at 8:38 PM

Poor half, non threatening. Tiote is ineffective in this game. I would be inclined to put Vurnon on in the 2nd half and take Tiote off. We should not be a goal down but then again we do not deserve to be ahead either. AP now has to earn his money and motivate the players coz’ I have not seen any hunger out there today. Furthermore we have not won a game from behind this season……so lets hope we can turn things round!

A half that mirrored what we did second half against Norwich.

We need to press the ball and force the play and not sit back and allow them time and space on the ball, but 4-4-2 has left us a man short in midfield tonight and Swansea have exploited it.

  • 213 Big Pappa Cissé // Dec 4, 2013 at 8:40 PM

If we continue to stand off them then we deserve to get beat . Their team of average players are passing circles round Cabaye & Tiote .

We need to get more bodies in midfield and press the action, not sit back all game .

Your source that says West Ham players were told not to sign autographs? (which led to the Ba altercation)

Why would Ba tell the person asking for an autograph he was ”too tired” to sign an autograph, if he was indeed was not allowed to sign any autographs.

Why would a club tell players not to sign autographs, at an end of season bash anyway? Does that not seem odd to you?

  • 235 Our Toon // Dec 4, 2013 at 8:52 PM

    bills son

bit late to make that change we need a goal, shocking tactics of sitting back inviting pressure. Press the ball high up, Swansea do dominate possession at home but 70 odd percent is a bit much!!

  • 236 Ted Bundy // Dec 4, 2013 at 8:53 PM

Santon/Colo on that side are just too weak and don’t do the basics good enough – tackle, block, mark.

  • 237 Marty-Toon // Dec 4, 2013 at 8:54 PM

Poor team choice tonight by Pards, the energy isn’t the same and that’s not a shock with the job they did last game.

Goal came from a cross on the left, our right!! Bit harsh to blame Colo and Santon, its the managers defensive / negative tactics of sitting back, conceding possession

I did notice that you claimed autographs were off-limits until after the meal.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/west-ham/8517583/West-Ham-United-hit-new-low-as-police-are-called-to-end-of-season-dinner.html < Here is one of many links that claim Ba said he was ''too tired'' to sign autographs, which led to a fight. To be fair there are quite a few differing claims as to why it all kicked off… but I happen to believe it was Ba's snobbish attitude which cause the problem; although I do not condone any kind of negative reaction to that. (I hope links to other sites are okay on here?)

As for your sources – I will give you the benefit of the doubt ;)

  • 258 Ted Bundy // Dec 4, 2013 at 9:01 PM

  • 394 Ancientcoptic // Dec 4, 2013 at 9:30 PM

12 points from a possible 15, out of 5 games. I am not going to complain yet.

Pardew is normally not too proud to switch things around when a weakness is exposed.

I am reserving judgement until the Man Utd game.

There is no substitute for beating teams thoroughly and deservedly, any other tact always gets caught out in the long run.

  • 404 toonbrother // Dec 4, 2013 at 9:32 PM

2 clean sheets in 13 league games is not good enough.
A backfour that concedes 3 v everton, 3 v Hull, 4 v City and 3 (so far) v Swansea is not good enough.
a defence that capitulates when put under pressure is not good enough.
In failing to see this Pardew has shown he is not good enough

  • 405 Our Toon // Dec 4, 2013 at 9:32 PM

This performance is no different to how we’ve been playing even though we’ve been winning. I’ve been saying that luck has played a big part in this run but only WBA game did we truely dominate the game and play well. MYM and Willo conceded more chances, Colo’s only mistake was against Norwich which led to goal

Finally been found out. To everyone been singing the players praise this season we have been lucky. I find it astounding people say Tiote is our player of the season so far, Tiote wasn’t even good when we finished 5th. Turns into trouble, loses the ball, can’t tackle, shoots when he shouldn’t – I could go on. To everyone praising Williamson and Shola the last few games I’m not even going to comment.

  • 426 JackButler // Dec 4, 2013 at 9:38 PM

    Our Toon

Willo and Mapou were working better as a pairing than Colo and Willo and there was no need to change it.

Pardew has allowed this game to be taken away from us as he’s stood on the side lines watching us being over run in midfield and has done sod all about it. The change should have been made at half time but no doubt the excuses will be rolled out again

We certainly haven’t been playing good stuff for weeks. Chelsea we got it right. Spurs we got luck with Krul. Norwich we did what we normally do, get a lead and attempt to hold it. West Brom we never looked outplayed, a good performance. Tonight, we have been outplayed, out passed, out thought.

Tiredness? we have played a lot less games then Swansea, not to mention 3 games in 6 days for them. If tiredness was a factor only Swansea have a real claim.

  • 444 BlackAndWhite // Dec 4, 2013 at 9:42 PM

Strange to keep the same line up with Man U at the weekend but we didn’t play that bad to be honest. We had good spells of play and the second goal was always going to be the turning point. We were caught on the break, it happens (we do it to teams all the time). Chill out, Man U got beat as well. Haway the lads!

  • 445 Tsunki // Dec 4, 2013 at 9:42 PM

well no surprise at all really, an opportunity to consolidate a point thrown away by Pardew being over cautious, strange for someone who moaned about lack of players available in busy periods. Inevitably Pardew has choked. Sorry guys but this was coming, cant wait for the excuses. What team will he field against manure?

toonbotherer – you and your Colo-bashers demonstrate your lack of clue, if you think he was responsibe for our loss tonight you are dim beyond words. The team looked tired and were totally exposed at the back by a midfield that passed aroud us like men v boys, as advertised.

Bitter, bitter defeat. Hugely disappointed in the players and Pardew.

Plenty of excuses for him in there, though….. I’m sure he won’t be shy in using them.

Anita may as well look for a way out in Jan. Criminally underused. Must be wondering why he gave up Ajax and regular CL football to come kick his heels and fall off the international radar, just as he was starting to get recognition for being key to Ajax’s up turn in performances.

  • 449 Rotonda heights // Dec 4, 2013 at 9:43 PM

We try and play offside with the 2 slowest CBs in the league.

No Ben Arfa / Marveaux to be a game changer.

    Chelsea we played well
    Spurs Krul played well

  • 459 Lilongwe Geordie // Dec 4, 2013 at 9:47 PM

Pardew is going to get a hammering tonight, but I had/have no issue with the team that started. the difference between Spurs away, Norwich and West Brom at home is that we got at them more in those three games. Today we sat deep, too deep by the sound of things and the player hotspots.

His subs were unusual, losing 1-0 and his first thought is Santon off Haidara on? Unless Santon is injured then it doesn’t make sense.

As for Colo, yes, he is a player in decline, but his fault for the goals tonight? Or against West Brom for that matter? If you blame him you are obviously blinded by dislike for the bloke. I would have preferred Mbiwa had kept his place, but he is not to blame for this defeat.

At 2:0 thought that the teams had been fairly equal with the rub of the green going their way. The tactical change from 442 to 451 seemed to have a positive effect, but the forward momentum left us vulnerable. To counter this Pardew should have brought Anita on for Shola to get a fresh pair of legs in to the midfield. I would have preferred to see Gouffran or Sissoko being pushed forward.
