World Cup Draw – France Draw Easy Group – England Don’t

6:08 pm, Friday, December 6th, 2013 by Ed Harrison · 39 Comments

The FIFA draw for the 2014 World Cup qualifying groups was held today, and France managed to get a fairly easy group – but England are in the same group as Italy and Uruguay.

Yohan Cabaye in French blue – should be pleased with the draw

The fourth team in England’s group is Costa Rica, who are a decent side, but france have drawn Switzerland, Ecuador, Honduras, so the Newcastle french players will be happy enough with that draw.

England will do well now to qualify for the knock-out stages of this tournament, but France must have a more than decent chance of progressing from their group.

Here is the full draw:

Group A – Brazil, Cameroon, Mexico, Croatia

Group B – Spain, Chile, Australia, Netherlands

Group C – Columbia, Cote D’Ivoire, Japan, Greece

Group D – Uruguay, Italy, Costa Rica, England

Group E – Switzerland, Ecuador, Honduras, France

Group F – Argentina, Nigeria, Iran, Bosnia-Herzegovina

Group G – Germany, Ghana, USA, Portugal

Group H – Belgium, Algeria, Korea Republic, Russia

And the USA had a tough draw in Group G, with Portugal and Germany in the same group, and the Yanks could have trouble progressing to the group stages under manager Jurgen Klinsmann.

Comments welcome.

    Well USA is screwed :D

England will play group C in the finals apparently, so if they can survive group stages they have a reasonable run of things.

Hopefully I can get to Brazil. Gonna be cutting it close.

Great draw, tough but winnable if you are in the sort of form that deserves to advance.

Might as well watch some decent games.

  • 4 Tsunki // Dec 6, 2013 at 6:14 PM

Actually they are all easy apart from ours lol

Just put £100 on Shola to win the golden boot at 10,000-1.

I’d play 451 tomorrow with HBA wide right, Sissoko in between Tiote and Cabaye and Remy up top.

Debuchy has come on a ton and won’t be as vulnerable with HBA in front of him and Sissoko can give us some strong forward running from midfield which we rarely get from Cabaye.

I think if HBA has shown good attitude in training and is fully recovered from ilness there is a strong chance he could play.

It was an excellent performance from Krul on the day.

The award is more than a hint to our style of play though. Hanging on whilst looking for individual goals to nick points most of the time.

Before Swansea, Shola has played quite well for a few games. However, his 13 years of spectacular underachievement or whatever it is cannot be simply overlooked due to hold up play in a few games.

He is supposed to have decent games, that’s his job.

What got me is ‘memory loss’ John Anderson before the game saying that looking through the Swansea team, he didn’t see players that could hurt us and we have better individual players.

Those same players, through positive coaching and without both forwards, had in excess of 70% possession I think it was against our superior players. That is nothing short of a disgrace and is simply a way of conveying tactics and belief.

An example of positive coaching, where less gifted players can play above their level to create a good team performance.

If only our calibre of player had the forward thinking of a Laudrup in charge, not a chancer and ex-glazier with an overly-inflated ego and a misleading silver tongue. If you look carefully you can even see his strings.

Laudrup said the Europa is an excellent chance for their players to experience different football straight after the game. Our prat sees it as a burden.

With higher standards of football, along with it comes more games and a busy schedule. Laudrup knows this and is used to it. Pardew is not, due to his limited and out of his depth ability.

Of course, Ashley is the real main reason for mediocrity at the club. Graham Carr’s gems are keeping the club afloat.

A truck could be rolling down an incline and Pardew would have you believe he is pushing all 5 tons from behind, simply by tilting the camera.

    Ted Bundy,

Ton of money going on Shola.

    Already down to 9000/1.

  • 9 Ted Bundy // Dec 6, 2013 at 6:20 PM

Savour him while you can –

They have a decent chance of making it out of the group. Which is needed.

He needs to find something inside himself that we’ve never seen before and become prolific.

    10,000/1 lol

  • 11 Ted Bundy // Dec 6, 2013 at 6:28 PM

So what they’re saying with those odds is, if Shola lives until he is 40,032 years-old, plays until he takes his last breath, keeps his form up during that time and Nigeria qualify for each WC, chances are he WILL win the golden boot once – nobody can take that away from him.

  • 12 JackButler // Dec 6, 2013 at 6:29 PM

England are gonna struggle to get out of that group

If he can convince the coach he’s the best penalty taker … then that improves your chances dramatically.

  • 14 John Tudor // Dec 6, 2013 at 6:31 PM

they will struggle to get out of a wet paper bag

  • 15 Hatem's better than Messi // Dec 6, 2013 at 6:35 PM

I wonder how much rainforest they’d have to cut down to make a paper bag that could hold a 22 man squad and coaching staff?

  • 16 John Tudor // Dec 6, 2013 at 6:47 PM

none they will use recycled bog roll

It’s a disgrace Switzerland got seeded above Italy. Yes Switz were undefeated in their group, but the next best team was Iceland. Italy finished 6 points clear of Denmark and also had Czech & Bulgaria in their league. The only reason they didn’t win their last qualifiers was because they’d took their foot off the peddle. Switzerland have beaten Brazil in a friendly but Brazil played their 2nd or 3rd team.

So it seems Swiss are being rewarded for getting an easy qualifying group & for beating a Brazil reserve team in a game Brazil couldn’t care less about.

Cavani & suarez vs cahill and Jagielka

England must play 1 of gerrard or lampard

I’ve defended Colo for exactly this reason, now he’s quoted on Sky Sports saying, “The press sometimes say things I said months ago, not now,” Coloccini told the Shields Gazette.

“I respect the fans. When I go on to the pitch, I always give 100 per cent for this shirt because they give me lots of love, and I have to say thank you.”

People should learn not to read to much into some translated quote from Argentina…

  • 25 toonking // Dec 6, 2013 at 7:03 PM

I have just 1 thing I can say about this England group. they get what they derserve and it might sound negative but I wish them all the luck and hope they totally fail I even hope that we don’t even get into the next world cup because it seems to me that the FA don’t care one bit about England and as for the premier league that just wants money.

Just read that Hatem didn’t travel to Manchester due to illness.

Its a wonder the draw made the news with all the phoney hysteria over old Mandela dying.

  • 32 Brutooon // Dec 6, 2013 at 9:52 PM

TBH Costa Rica even better than England

SO England favourite to be group BOTTOM

  • 33 Blofal // Dec 6, 2013 at 10:38 PM

As an Australian I can honestly say we are going to get smashed 6-0 every game. If we even scrape a single draw I will consider it a victory.

  • 34 Blofal // Dec 6, 2013 at 10:39 PM

As an Australian I can honestly say we are going to get smashed 6-0 every game. If we even scrape a single draw I will consider it a victory.

And France are playing 2 south american teams. That group is very even. It won’t be easy for or them.

  • 35 lesh // Dec 6, 2013 at 10:45 PM

Roy. Phoney hysteria over Mandela’s death? Perhaps you should consider the hypocracy uttered by the likes held Cameron.

    Make Poverty History – Mandela

Spread and intensify poverty – Cameron and his repugnant ilk (unsaid I hasten to add, but implemented nevertheless!)

  • 36 Tsunki // Dec 6, 2013 at 10:56 PM

brutoon @32 – tbh Costa Rica arent better than England, and England rarely if ever drop out in the group stage. Therefore, tbh, that was a stupid thing to say.

  • 37 Tsunki // Dec 6, 2013 at 10:58 PM

    Sorry, whats that about Mandela?

  • 38 I-Am-Ahab // Dec 7, 2013 at 12:42 AM

Blofal – I am much more optimistic… I believe we can snatch a win and draw… Call me a dreamer…

We hav e adifficult group in the WK, but i would say this :

There are no easy games in the WK!

England did,nt look good in their last friendly but it was just the, “Only a friendly” so, why all the Negativity around the National Team., don,t understand it !

On their day, and with a half decent ref, England need,nt be afraid of anyone!
