The Journal is reporting today that Newcastle United are looking at potentially signing Sporting Lisbon winger Diego Capel in January, although other clubs are also interested in the twice capped Spanish International.
Diego Capel – Sporting Lisbon winger
The Spanish club is short of money, which is why they cashed in on striker striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel in the summer, and he went to Norwich for £8.5M, but so far has only scored one goal for Norwich and is currently out injured.
Capel is also attracting big clubs like Tottenham and Liverpool, and the Journal is reporting that he will be a replacement for Jonas Gutierrez, although we thought that’s exactly what Yoan Gouffran has turned out to be.
Yoan has all the attributes of tracking back that Jonas has always displayed at Newcastle, but the Frenchmen scores more goals.
Capel joined Sporting Lisbon in 2011 from Sevilla for €6M (£5.1M), and has since played 97 times for the club with 15 goals and 22 assists, and while at Sevilla he played 170 times with 11 goals and 19 assists.
He is left footed and can either play on the left wing or up front as a striker.
Sporting Lisbon President Bruno de Carvalho is looking for some big money for his player, which in itself suggests Newcastle will not get him.
This is what Bruno had to say about his player today:
“The club has decided that there will be no sales in January,” “The club is leading the division for the first time in nine years and we are determined to fight for the title.” “Only if a ridiculous offer is put in for a player will it be studied.”
Newcastle will not put in a ridiculous offer for any player these days, but if the reported £5M would be enough to get him, Newcastle could certainly afford that, we think.
But if 25 year-old Diego came to Newcastle it would be likely the club would farm out both Sylvain Marveaux and Gabby Obertan on loan through the end of the season, and then likely sell both players in the summer.
There will be increasing reports about players Newcastle could be interested in next month, but only Joe Kinnear and Alan Pardew know exactly who the targets are.
But this lad looks a decent enough players and can score a goal or two.
Here’s some video of the player.

Comment #1This has all the hall marks of a story generated by a club wanting to sell a major asset at an inflated price. Are you sure the statement isn’t from Sporting Lisbon President Alan de Pardew?

Here is me thinking you wouldn’t have been so brave given that Tuff administered a good thrashing to you the last time you were brazenly giving it large 😉
Seriously though, get your @rse over the pond and put your theory to the test! haha

Comment #3Would be a good signing for £5million as we lack out and out wingers like Navas.
Has to fit in the Pardew game plan, no point buying for the sake of a a good deal!!

Comment #9It is a rumour that has been doing the rounds at West Ham and Southampton. I would seriously doubt that Pardew is going sue for libel because it has been repeated, so how about you lot chill out.

If a potential libel statement is posted on a blog and it is not removed I believe the blog owner may also be culpable if the statement is proved to be false.
And the blog owner will be far easier to trace than a poster with tag.

He hasn’t sued in the 3 years that this rumour has been circulating so why would he now? You’re being ridiculous frankly.

Comment #14Capel was supposed to be the next big thing when he was at Sevilla but he fell off. Seems to have rediscovered some form and matured a bit at Sporting. Definitely worth enquiring about him, Zakaria Labyad and Marcos Rojo if Sporting are looking to sell.

You’re still being ridiculous, as it is a moot point. Ironic how I am constantly accused of being pompous yet you have decided to give us a lesson in the law of libel.

Comment #22tequila – good potted version of the libel laws.
It would seem that defamation would include telling lies about people and publishing it on a blog – such as falsely accusing someone of not being a true supporter and that they wanted the Toon to lose.
Boohoo bills – do YOU have a good lawyer.

You are experiencing a classic pompous Ruddy dressing down.
First, he ignores or hasn’t got the intelligence to see that your real point is making posters and Ed aware that the laws of libel still apply online, not that you think Pardew is going to sue.
When you try to explain this Ruddy calls YOU pompous and cranks the situation up by telling you to “wind your neck in. Son.”
He is SO predictable.

If you think I comment here in my capacity as a law student then you are sadly mistaken. Laws are broken on a constant basis. If you swear in public you are guilty of a public order offence. If you make noise in a residential area between 11pm and 6am you are guilty of noise pollution/disturbance and potentially anti-social behaviour.
These things, much like libellous statements, are carried out on a daily basis, and given how this statement has been repeated on a semi-regular basis for the past number of years without reproach makes it a fairly moot point.
Any other laws you wish to enlighten us about though while you are in pompous @rsehole mode?

Will you ever give up on that one?
Tell you what, I’ll give you the same apology that Ruddy did for calling NUFC supporters the most apathetic in the world. ..
Do I have to explain the meaning of semantics and hyperbole to you?
There’s your apology. And if its good enough for you big blog pal Ruddy it sure is good enough for mwah.

I didn’t apologise for calling NUFC fans the most apathetic in the world. They are both apathetic and pathetic at the same time. You are the living embodiment of that.
I also think you mean to say ‘moi’. You can’t educate on semantics and in the same breath get it wrong…

So your ignorance of French is down to the fact that you are Geordie? I am pretty sure there are plenty of Geordies who would take exception to that kind of statement.
Put the little ‘you’re not a Geordie’ chestnut away. It only serves to cheapen your already weak argument even further.

Comment #35Nice of you to call someone who has supported the Toon for 50 years, had two season tickets for 23 years, travelled to countless away games home and abroad, sponsored the great Peter Beardsley’s shirt and is a regular poster on this blog as. …

And all because I don’t agree with you.
That in my mind is truly pathetic.

I really do not care how long you have ‘supported’ the Toon for. Age is no substitute for wisdom, or as the baird more eloquently puts it ‘thou shouldst not have been old before thou hadst been wise’
If you can’t grasp French, Shakespeare is likely to elude you too.
Respect is earned, and not given. Given how you have blindly supported Ashley all the while, without questioning, I cannot give you my respect, so you could support the Toon for 100 years and have Peter Beardsley’s jock strap on your mantelpiece, you and I are simply different supporters of the same club.
