Alan Pardew talked yesterday at his press conference, of his dismissal at Southampton in August, 2010, after his side had walloped Bristol Rovers 4-0 away from home on 28th August of that year.
Alan Pardew – when Saints manager
Alan simply didn’t get along with new owner and Chairman Nicola Cortese, and the Newcastle manager still seems to be a little upset by his dismissal down south, which were for non-football reasons:
“There’s a cliché that one door closes and another opens.” “I had a door open for me which was perhaps unexpected, but you’ve still got to step through it and do the job, which I’ve managed to do at Newcastle.”
“For Southampton, it’s worked for them.” “They first opened it to Dean Wilkins, actually, and it was a disaster.” “But then they got Nigel Adkins and then Mauricio Pochettino, who has been terrific.”
Alan Pardew was fired after three games of the 2010-2011 season when the Saints had 4 points, but then Dean Wilkins lost two games as caretaker manager, before Nigel Adkins was signed from Scunthorpe United on September 10th.
And Nigel started to steady the ship and of course got them two successive promotions and they were into the Premier League, but then Nigel was fired last January, following a great 2-2 draw at Chelsea, and he found out he was sacked as he watched TV.
On December 7th, 2010, Alan Pardew was appointed manager at Newcastle United, after Chris Hughton had been ruthlessly fired by owner Mike Ashley.
Comments welcome.
Note: South Shields local artist Robert Olley has a new painting out called “Derby Day Home” and it can be personalized so that any surname can be put on the striker’s shirt – the one scoring the goal – take a look.

I wouldn’t want him slotting between the 2 holding midfielders. 30 minutes of team play doesn’t make up for however many years of not, so I don’t trust him to offer protection to Debuchy. I want him in their to help us control possession, for all Sissoko’s power pace and dynamism his passing lacks any real consistency and we need to keep the ball when we have it.
Whilst I’m not a fan of HBA, without Cabaye we lack a creative player in the centre so he (hopefully) will be able to provide passes that carve open the defence and release Remy, Goofy and Sissoko behind the Saints defence. Provided his 30minute cameo last week was evidence he had learned to become a part of the team instead of playing as an individual it should work.
We will know within 20 minutes if last week was a one off or not. If it was a one off, I’d have him off by half time.

Not disagreeing. What about bringing Bigirimana in and pushing Anita forward, or Gutierrez in the AM role? Possiblities but the strongest option you would think is HBA.

Comment #86dok – I think tomorrows game is so difficult to call.
What are Southampton going to be like missing several of their first team players -are their replacements good enough and is our resurgent team, without Cabaye, good enough/creative enough. Will Percy start Benny?
So your shout of a draw may be reasonable – however in order to remain optimistic I’m going for a win 1 -0 to the Toon.

I don’t think Pardew will be letting lack of motivation be a factor in this game. Your right, in some matches his arrogance seeps down to the squad and we lack commitment.

Anita is neat, tidy and uncomplicated. I think he is ideal to play in next to Tiote to keep possession and to keep the ball moving. I don’t see him as the more attacking of a trio.
I’m not sure on Bigi,he hasn’t featured at all this season which is a worry, whether he is fully match ready to step straight into a game where the battle will be won or lost in midfield I’m not sure.
On Guti, if we play him in the centre he is a defensive option for me, and would be more suited to a game where we expect to be on the back foot. eg. Chelsea away where they would have three creative players in midfield and he can chase and harry them.
I think we need to stick with the same formation and outlook as Man U, and for me HBA is best suited to step in for Cabaye tomorrow. But it needs to be the HBA of last week, not the one who blazes shots high and wide with others better placed, or the one who runs down blind alleys rather than playing the simple pass.

fair enough, my worry is the lack of cabaye and because of that, will tiote revert to his old form, shooting from 20+ yards and taking unnesseccary challenges, resulting in a yellow…. hes been solid this season, and would hate a relapse, as he may try to do too much…
im usually the optimist, i just unfortunately think a draw is in the offing, and 1 point is better than none at all… lets hope pards inspires our club to attack, attack attack, and not let up after we score one first, which will happen in the 12th minute, by goofy….

Sure enough. I will be looking for HBA to link up well with the other forwards and be the ‘go to guy’ for the pass out of defense. If he insists on taking on players, loosing the ball and endlessly shooting his team mates will stop involving him. Hopefully they will have been working on the training pitch and the other players will offer good options for him. Pardew has called his decision making in to question but I believe that is equally about the options being open to him; and his natural instinct to get the ball in the net.

Comment #93As for the game tomorrow, personally I think having Cabaye missing is a big blow, he is very important to the way we play. Some people criticise him because he doesn’t dominate games from the middle but that isn’t really his game. I hope Anita slots straight in because we need a good passer of the ball in that position.
I think we will be under the cosh a little tomorrow so we will need to try and keep the ball when we get it. If we come out of the traps quickly I think we will go on and win the game, but if we let them settle I think we will struggle.

I have said this before, but if you are a player on a team, and you make runs and give options to a team mate who either shoots or runs into blind alleys rather than using the players showing for him then eventually you stop making the runs and giving him options.
HBA has made this bed for himself, and only by using his team mates and using the ball well will he regain their trust to make the runs for him.

Clement is one of the people I suggested in the summer as a potential Pardew replacement. He comes across very well in that interview.
As for HBA, I assume you are meaning the bit at the end, about being direct and putting it in the goal. That would be all good and well if there was evidence HBA could do this consistently. Ronaldo has scored more in each of his seasons at Real Madrid then HBA in his career! He is only 8 off HBA’s career total goals already this season!

Comment #102Zaha – when would he get a game in Toon? What would be the outcome for him to come to Toon to maybe not even make the bench.
Ince – makes more sense as a long term plan.
Cisse – the guy needs a change of environment. He is trying too hard. Or he needs to get in without any kind of pressure, I cannot see that happen. He is a striker not a footballer which is what Pardew is trying to make of him. Cisse of today would not score any of the goals he scored when he first came. Imagine him getting the ball like in his first game against Villa. He would put it in the stands.
Ameobi – the guy is a giant, he is there to bully defenders, keep the ball up and to make space for Remy and Goufran, not to score goals. He is a master at this. I can think of quite a few goals where just his presence have created goals.
At the moment Ameobi works a lot better for this team than Cisse is doing. Too bad for Cisse.
I would rather play HBA than Cisse. HBA is a player and he can finish. HE can also run at defenders and keep the ball up. He can also cross. Pardew wants Cisse to do these things, sorry Pardew, Cisse will never cross the ball with any kind of quality.
Let Cisse go and get another striker in in January.

Comment #104I am going for these starting positions but with the attacking middle three (H/S/G) interchanging. The 2 holding midfielders will reduce the need for the wide forwards to defend and allow the full backs forward with Sissoko dropping back.
—————— Remy
HBA ——— Sissoko ——— Gouffran
——– Tiote ———— Anita
Santon – Mbiwa – Williamson – Debuchy

HBA isn’t a kid anymore, he should by rights be at the peak of his game at 26/27, but he isn’t l’enfant terrible has never really grown up from being the kid greedy talented kid that came through at Lyon, whereas Ronaldo was a similar player when he first joined Man U, but by the time he was 26 was rightly thought of as one of the world’s finest.

Your points regarding Cisse were well argued. However, the player who has scored the best brace I have ever seen in any game, a player who was almost embarrassed to score at will (remember poor Ba’s expression?) can’t have been that bad… Maybe he feels God is against him for that Wonga thing….
Look at Ba now, Chelsea fans want him out, they’d pay us to have him back. Look at Benteke who can’t score anymore. You mentioned Shearer who was arguably the most consistent CF. In truth, he had several barren patches and often covered that up through pens.
BTW, no penalties this year, or am I wrong.

Comment #115We seem to have a problem against the ‘less glamorous’ teams because of their limitations, by that I mean their combined skill set is down a peg from the top set, they cut their cloth accordingly, using high levels of fitness, sustained pressure off the ball, keeping possession without necessarily going forward, defending in numbers and of course the infamous long ball hopefully to snatch an early goal and park the bus. That and kicking chunks out of key players.
We seem to be doing a little more of most of that ourselves of late, hence the dropping of ‘skills’ players like HBA, Anita, Marveaux possibly and being a bit more disciplined in the respective roles, especially at the back. If we can deal with it when it’s dished out to us, we might be on to something

Comment #116I do not think we can realistically play long ball football with Cabaye missing from the team… there really isn’t anybody else capable of playing assertive long range passes like Cabaye.
If we are going to play to win, and try to unlock the Saints using a different style, that leaves either ball on the deck passing, dribbling attacks or running the channels… that signals Ben Arfa to me.

Comment #117With this positive wibe that going on at the moment and the belief in the team and so on…I just cannot see us win tomorrow.
Saying that I think this is the toughest game of the coming three. Not only because they are the best placed team but because we seem to struggle against teams that likes to pass the ball around.
Someone was mentioning the amount of injuries they have, well, they still managed to get a point from Man City, and from reading about the game it seems they were the better side.
Either way, if we win tomorrow, maybe I will really start believing in top 4.
