Newcastle are supposed to be the first Premier League club to show any interest in signing Dimitar Berbatov from Fulham in January, but we’d be shocked if this story in the Sunday People today has any truth to it at all.
Berbatov in action against Newcastle this season
First of all Mike Ashley doesn’t like to sign players on high wages who are past their prime, and the Bulgarian International certainly fits that category, and he will be 33 on January 30th.
It seems that Dimitar has told Fulham he would like to leave the club in January, and his agent has said the 32 year-old is not happy at Craven Cottage.
Dimitar has only six months remaining on his Fulham contract, and the news is he would be available for around £2M, but it’s his wages that will be sky-high.
Berbatov cost Fulham £5M from Manchester United in August of last year, and it remains to be seen if he becomes a happier player under new Fulham manager Rene Meulensteen.
Some Premier League club could be interested in signing Berbatov for £2M next month, but we’d be very surprised if one of those clubs is Newcastle United.
While at Fulham Berbatov has played 60 times and scored 19 goals.
