This Newcastle Player Again Tops Our Poll

9:17 am, Sunday, December 15th, 2013 by Ed Harrison · 135 Comments

French International right-back Mathieu Debuchy  is leading our poll for Newcastle best player in the game at home yesterday against Southampton.

Mathieu Debuchy challenges Jay Rodriguez yesterday

We though Vurnon Anita had another good game for the side, but we also missed the creativity and passing ability of Yohan Cabaye, and maybe if Yohan had not been suspended, he could have opened up the Southampton defense.

But it’s not the first time Mathieu has topped our poll this season, and if he continues in his excellent form this season, the French International full-back could be the Player of the Season come next May – in his first full season on Tyneside.

However, after the Frenchman took an early lead in the poll, Anita and Debuchy are now neck and neck – so here’s a chance to vote if you haven’t already done so.

points lost but a point gained

Seriously, how can Anita get all them votes. I was at the game yesterday and constantly kept thinking, ‘Why did he do that’, ‘Why play back when he could have gone forward’, ‘He’s well out of position’, ‘That corner was terrible’. People wonder why Pardew doesn’t play him much. It’s because he’s not all that good. Yes, he is capable of doing well and has a good attitude but I often think, why didn’t we go for Shelvey instead, how he’s a class act. Always positive with his passes and constantly setting up chances or scoring himself, great attitude to. I hope he goes to the World Cup.

i wasn’t at the game i watched it on TV and i got to say Anita was immense, he was all over the pitch winning tackles, pressuring players and did an HBA inside the box.

realistically he played like Tiote but with more attack

Ed there is a difference between ‘though’, ‘through’, and ‘thought’! FFS get it right I read this blog everyday and I always ignore it but you do it every article, it’s getting very annoying.

On topic- Debuchy is head and shoulders above the rest in his progress this season. He is quickly becoming the best right back in the league. Now we’re seeing the benefits from him and the difference he makes to the side compared to Simpson.

Debuchy also highlights Santon’s weaknesses, making Haidara a great option to try out and make Santon realize he can’t leave the defense exposed like he does and get away with it.

Against the Saints, Debuchy, Sissoko, Willo and Anita my men of the match- well done lads!

and to think some clowns on here wanted Carroll back at Newcastle

  • 6 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Dec 15, 2013 at 10:26 AM

I was there yesterday and gave Anita MOM just ahead of Debuchy and Sissoko because he was willing to try things. I Thought he defended well in front of the back four breaking up play and also was involved in a lot of the build up play. but he lacks the long ball and killer balls of Cabaye. I thought his corner to Debuchy on the edge of the box was something different to lob it in the middle.
Also did a brilliant dribble in the box first half and pulled it back but know one gambled on him pulling the ball back.
Remy and Shloa were poor yesterday – lacked movement and conviction yesterday.
Ben Arfa did well when he came on but has to learn to pass at the right time.
Should be interesting the lineup for next week (midfield) if everyone is fit

spot on mate, what’s funny though is that Gouffran & Sissoko were basically playing the striker role and to think where was Remy?

i hope Cisse hasn’t taught him anything lol

  • 8 Newcastleforlife // Dec 15, 2013 at 10:35 AM

This season is on balance for newcastle

    At Home, 8 matches-4 wins 3draws 1losss
    Away,8 matches- 4wins 1 draw 3 loss

we need to bring 3 players in jan so that pardew can mix between 4-4-2 and 4-2-3-1

    1. Bafetimi Gomis- strong physical striker would complement Remy in 4-4-2 in place of ameobi…
    2. Nickolas N’kolou- a strong physical defender
    3. Antonio Valencia- a winger who works his socks off.. Good in defending and attacking..
    4. Finagobson(Fin striker from heverneen)- seeing cisse play.

    1. Gabriel Obertan
    2. Jonas Guittirez
    3. Cisse
    4. Saylor

    1. Haidara/Dummet
    2. Sammy Ameobi

  • 9 Slank // Dec 15, 2013 at 10:36 AM

I watched the match on the telly (as I live abroad) and gave Anita MOTM. However, it was touch and go between him and Debuchy.

Debuchy is probably the most improved player this season perhaps because foreign defenders take longer to adapt to the Premier League. It was certainly the case with Colo and Enrique.

I also think Sissoko has improved enormously perhaps because he has found a position within a formation that he feels comfortable with.

  • 10 Black and White with an army lol // Dec 15, 2013 at 10:36 AM

when Anita dribbled into the box i saw only Sissoko on the edge of the box and the strikers were coming up ( to bloody late though ) i think AP needs to sort this out

  • 11 Black and White with an army lol // Dec 15, 2013 at 10:38 AM

haven’t you heard mate Newcastle have no transfer money at all so i wouldn’t expect any signings in January unless we sell to buy but only if it’s one of our star players

  • 12 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Dec 15, 2013 at 10:40 AM

    Black and White
Cheers I try to give a brief account on how I see it without having favourites.
Enjoyed the game though a bit tense second half.
Interesting that Newcastle tried the pressing game also but need to work on it a bit more though

  • 13 Black and White with an army lol // Dec 15, 2013 at 10:41 AM

also mate your selling and loaning doesn’t make sense, we already have a thin squad so selling 4 and loaning out 3 and bring in 3 is gonna leave us with an even more thin squad

aye mate i’m a bit surprise we didn’t keep pressing them because at times that we did Southampton were panicking and making mistakes.

i even saw Southampton playing long ball to get out of danger which we should of took advantage of

Mate, I dont think so… if u check out the last 2 years, the strategy has been buy a) players who are frustrated b) players whose contract expires c) from teams that are struggling in JAN
and buy well scouted players by carr in summer..

I believe we will bid for Gomis/remy cabella/finagobsson/ince(at least 2 of them )

  • 17 Slank // Dec 15, 2013 at 10:47 AM

    Newcastleforlife @ 8

I very much doubt the club would sell Cisse so recently after having paid out for him. It also sends out the wrong signal of ‘one bad season and you are out’ to any player thinking about a move to Newcastle.

I find it interesting that you think Saylor should be sold. It wasn’t so long ago that nearly all the people wanted Williamson out. I very much doubt that’s the case today.

Also, the way I read it is, why would you want to put out on loan two left backs. What happens if Santon is out injured or suspended or has a loss of form?

Also again, why isn’t Marveaux in your list. Surely the writing is on the wall for him as he hasn’t featured at all this season.

  • 18 Black and White with an army lol // Dec 15, 2013 at 10:49 AM

good point mate, iv’e always said Sissoko will one day become our star player and at 23 years old it’s looking good

iv’e been criticise before when i said this but i’ll say it again we need to build the team around Sissoko

    8 games 4 losses 4 wins.

Odd match loss, even match win

  • 21 expatmag // Dec 15, 2013 at 10:51 AM

    G/Day from Oz

Well if Remy had taken those two chances, we would have won easily. However, we need to focus ahead now and look for maximum points from Palce and Stoke.

On the subject of transfers, forget Zaha on loan and Berbatov as they will not take us further than we already are.

If Ashley wants to continue to make signinghs on the cheap, what about the following:

Ince for Gosling plus a couple of million
Luuk De Jong in a straight swap for Cisse
    Gomis for 3 million
The young right back from Burnley as back up to Debuchy for a couple of million
    and Remy, of course

Not asking too much, is it?

  • 22 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Dec 15, 2013 at 10:54 AM

    Black and White
Spot on, I don’t think I have seen Southampton play the long ball as much as yesterday.
KRUL – distribution has got to improve as a few times yesterday our full backs came short and wide for the roll-out but he dwelt on the ball too long and were closed down so he had to pump the ball long which becomes a fifty-fifty ball.

  • 23 Black and White with an army lol // Dec 15, 2013 at 10:54 AM

i get your point mate about those players it would be amazing for Newcastle to pull of another Sissoko kind of deal.

but like i said in order for us to purchase players we need to sell first and these quotes are actually came from MA, AP & JFK themselves.

but really we can only hope, if theses deals actually happen without anyone leaving i can safely say that MA might have some ambition for us to have success but i wouldn’t count on it though.

  • 24 Slank // Dec 15, 2013 at 10:55 AM

    Charlie in the Gallowgate

i think we all are getting sick of Krull with his distribution but on the other hand if he aimed more of his long balls to specific players like he did against Manure that led to the goal it would be good but i wouldn’t want him to constantly keep doing this

  • 26 70TWO // Dec 15, 2013 at 10:59 AM

Top of the flops, I expected more of Pardew in his attempt to ‘get one over ‘ on his former employer.

  • 27 Black and White with an army lol // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:02 AM

i wouldn’t loan out either Dummet or Haidara these are our only left footed full backs

    RB – Debuchy, Santon
    LB – Dummet, Haidara

i would keep rotating these players especially with the FA cup coming up

  • 28 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:02 AM

    Black and White
I don’t mind the long kick out but I think he should mix it up a bit more some long some short – keep the opposition guessing

  • 29 Transfer Sage // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:02 AM

I missed the game yesterday but caught a few highlights, remy could and should have won it for us. We seemed to play well.

On transfers people post not sure why they want gomis. The man is poor and has a very modest record in France. The lad isn’t a hold up player and from everything I have seen shola is twice the player.

We now have a pretty good squad, not just 11, so we should really be looking to only bring players in who will genuinely push our better players for spots…we are now past the need for players to fill the numbers out.

  • 30 expatmag // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:04 AM

and Mbiwa can play anywhere along the back 4

  • 31 Black and White with an army lol // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:05 AM

we should bring in Zaha on loan and Ince through purchase and have Remy & Goufrran as our leading strikers

  • 32 Slank // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:07 AM

Black and White with an army lol @ 15

Yes I agree with you. Given the number of uncharacteristically long balls from Soton it shows that our forwards are defending well from the front. I first noticed this against Spurs and it has continued on from there, certainly against ManU who were never allowed to settle on the ball.

  • 33 cyprus // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:07 AM

    I gave MOM to Sissoko,
the guy is just immense. He can dribble, is intimidating, he’s improving. But, Debuchy, Tiote, Anita, Williamson, Colo etc were all good. In fact, we’re beginning to look like a team, lads, for those of you who missed the game. despite them hitting the post, we deserved to win this one. Remy missed a sitter that Cisse haters would’ve loved if it was Cisse, if you know what I mean ;)

  • 34 Black and White with an army lol // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:07 AM

i think MYM would be extra cover for those 4 full backs if any get injured or if we play deep since he wouldn’t venture forward to much

  • 35 expatmag // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:07 AM

Yes, we have a good squad but if we want to improve further, we need to upgrade.

As it is at the moment, Shola doesn’t score, Gomis does. Cisse is gone, in my opinion and Remy will go to a bigger club.

    That leaves us with Gouffran.

We need several forwards, all capabnle of finding the net.

  • 36 Transfer Sage // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:08 AM

In with you, I don’t mind the long kick from goal either but krul needs to work on his accuracy with it as a lot of the time it seems like an aimless punt.

His biggest sin with distribution though is how long he takes, it’s very rare you seem him gather the ball and release it right away, always gives a bit too much time to allow the opposition to get some shape back.

He just needs more work on it though, if that’s the only fault I can pick with him he is doing a good job in goal.

  • 37 cyprus // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:09 AM

Gouffran, HBA, Santon were also good. Literally, I mean, the whole team was good. Remy on a bit of a barren one, however.

  • 38 Black and White with an army lol // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:09 AM

aye mate i think that’s why against Manure it was a very entertaining match a bit like the KK days

  • 39 bills-son // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:09 AM

    Loan out Haidara?

He should be given a run in place of Santon imo. Losing the ball on yet another foolish run inside was the cause of their goal.

  • 40 expatmag // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:10 AM

I really cannot see the point of Zaha, especially as he clearly doesn’t want to move further north.

If we are trying to develop our own players, why the hell woud we want to do Man Utd any favours with theirs.

Furthermore, if we signed him on loan, where does that leave HBA.

  • 41 Slank // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:11 AM

Black and White with an army lol @ 27

    Absolutely, couldn’t agree more.

Dummet and Haidara don’t look like they need loaning out.

  • 42 Newcastleforlife // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:12 AM

black and white with army lol:

i wont blame the management if they let cabaye gone in jan if an offer of 20 M + comes… he is looking for move away from newcastle and made that statement public…

For sissokko like deal, mautidi, menez and kaboul are up for grabs… not sure of their salary…

  • 43 Transfer Sage // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:12 AM

Look at gomis though, averages 1 in 3 to sholas 1 in 5. Bare in mind he plays a weaker league and in a team that is usually higher up than Newcastle in their respective league…his record isn’t that good. Also from what I see is that he doesn’t offer anywhere near the link play of shola either.

I agree we need to improve but the level we are I think 1-3 players a window will do us right, more quality over quantity now.

I think remy is up in the air. We may sign him, entirely depends on what clubs come in for him this summer. For whatever reason he seems to not be a player fancied by top clubs so we might end up with him, but he won’t rush to make a decision.

  • 44 Black and White with an army lol // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:14 AM

hopefully in the AMC role, we seem deadly in the centre, or have him as an inside forward on the right with Remy on the left with Gouffran as the striker

  • 45 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:16 AM

    Good positive blog this morning.
I don’t think we are far away from being a very good premiership team.
Still a long way to go after watching the Man City Arsenal game in the Bridge before yesterdays game.
Mind you thought Arsenal were a TAD unlucky not to get a penalty and Giroud was not offside when scoring.
Also I think the TOON could get at Arsenal down the wings as they defend very narrow

  • 46 Black and White with an army lol // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:16 AM

lol i was thinking of the same players mate but i think there salaries are over our current target.

I’m not sure how much they are on but these are good players and i would think maybe over the 60k mark

  • 47 cyprus // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:17 AM

Santon is a very good player, no doubt. He’s beginning to contribute more, front and back, and he will start scoring. In my starting 11. Like i said, the whole team was good. If anyone must be criticized it’s Remy, I could’ ve scored that. Still, unfair to pick on moments, given the overall effort. We deserved 3.

  • 48 bills-son // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:18 AM

I just don’t see that Santon had a good game. His first duty is to defend and if you compare him to Debuchy he is nowhere near as good defensively. Going forward he looks good but there is no end product and even worse he continually cuts inside and loses the ball just as he did yesterday for the goal.

Pards subbed him again for Haidara yesterday and I think he is close to losing his place.

    Black and White
Have to say feel a tiny bit sorry for Andy Carroll
Never wanted him back but wanted to see him turn his career around, must be hard to have your manager backing you simply to save his skin whilst the owner is saying signing you was a huge mistake!

Have to admit Sullivan is right though he was never worth the price tag or his wages which are ridiculous when you actually consider his career, you’d think paying £15 mil for him they would of tried to haggle his wages down like!

  • 51 Transfer Sage // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:22 AM

I like talking positive more than negative and now things are going well on the pitch it’s easier to ignore the small problems. I think we have been value for pretty every point we have gotten or lost in the past 8 games.

    Black and white army

Remember though in France income tax is 75% on high incomes, which footballers pay easily falls into. So the 40% tax here means we can effectively pay just over half their salary for them to get the same wage at home. That could make it easier with wages.

  • 52 expatmag // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:23 AM

Shola has done well recently, but with his age and injury record, I cannot see what value he will be after this season.

You might be right about Gomis and there are other alternatives around such as De Jong, Finboggason who are younger but also play in inferior leagues.

We cannot hope to match the Cities of this world but we have to be shrewd in swho we buy, especially if they are from abroad.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind Jordan Rhodes as he is a natural goalscorer.

  • 53 Newcastleforlife // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:23 AM

    b;ack and white/ slank,

just a curious question, whether you will take BAUP over PARDEW

  • 54 toonarmydownsouth // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:24 AM

Signing Zaha on loan doesn’t shunt HBA down the pecking order at all mate, can play both wings and has an eye for goal, is just another option to come off the bench which I’d rather see than obertan or Marv

Out squad size is on its limits so can’t see many per meant signings until some players are moved on in the summer

  • 55 Black and White with an army lol // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:24 AM

i think that’s the beauty of Santon play, there’s not many wing backs who are right footed and play on the left who can also cross with there weaker foot.

i think in years to comes Santon will be an amazing player for us on there left he’s starting to become better defensively and once he’s cracked attacking and defensive roles he only needs to learn finishing and when that happens he will be amazing

  • 56 Transfer Sage // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:25 AM

Yeh it’s a shame for the big lad, he has struggled for a couple years with injuries now. A bit of justice maybe for how unprofessional he was/is. Not nice to see though.

And I can’t see any other club showing interest at 15mil, west ham should have offered half that an waited for Liverpool to buckle to get those wages off their books. Every year they waited would have been another 4-5 mil they had to pay out and ultimately have lost.

  • 64 Newcastleforlife // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:30 AM

Finagobson/Luuk De jong are nt good enough , holding the ball.. There is always a difference in 1 in 3 and 1 in 5..
    7 goals a season and 13 goals a season means a differnece of atleaset 5 to 8 points…

  • 65 Slank // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:32 AM

    bills-son @ 48

Santon is very predictable. He always cuts infield. All opposition teams know this. Their breakaway goal exploited his absence at left back.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we sold him. We have two good left footed left backs waiting in the wings who are good enough to fill that spot and would provide a better attacking option as they can both whip in crosses using their left feet without leaving a huge hole behind them.

  • 66 expatmag // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:32 AM

I understand your point but what I was wondering was with Shola out of contract, Cisse out of form and the possibility that Remy not being here in July, it leaves us short on numbers up front and with strikers availability at a premium, someone of Gomis’s ability would be required within our budget

  • 67 Black and White with an army lol // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:33 AM

he could probably do more than Pardew in the attacking, fluid style sense but then again the PL is different than the La Liga in terms of styles and quickness.

but all in all i think he would be a massive improvement for Pardew with experience in Europe as well

  • 68 toonarmydownsouth // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:33 AM

Agree mate, unfortunately Andy looks to be another victim of the price tag, never nice to see but he was never going to live up to a £15 mil tag let alone a £35 mil tag!
Injuries have massively hampered his career and look like they always will, he doesn’t seem to recover from the niggly ones and always seems to eager to rush back

  • 69 expatmag // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:34 AM

SO, why not do that in January by signing someone like Ince permanently rather than doing Man Utd favours.

    Do you see my point?

  • 72 toonarmydownsouth // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:38 AM

Who knows I’m not a scout
Maybe the players were looking at aren’t available in January, maybe we have players on loan we not yet sure about

Point is if were looking at bringing players in on loan we probably feel the deals around aren’t right atm so would rather see a hungry young player with a point to prove come in rather than no one at all

  • 73 Marty-Toon // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:38 AM

I nearly spat out my coffee when I read that you’d like Antonio Valencia at nufc.
Wouldn’t have him near our team,he plays for ten mins and the. You don’t see him for the rest of the game.
Would like to see a strong and quick CF brought in.
The team is a little out of balance with Sissoko on the RW but he’s done an exceptional job there, great runs and made some good attacks from him and he’s also good at tracking back.
Maybe AP can make him into a winger.
Would like to see Sissoko,Cabaye,Tiote in the middle of a 5 with Anita on the RW or Santon on the RW.
    Haidara at LB

at the end of the day if we bring in Zaha in terms of doing Manure a favour i wouldn’t mind since it will be an improvement to our Newcastle side

  • 75 Marty-Toon // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:42 AM

Allardyce is supposed to be after Oba Martins :-) now that’ll certainly give them 20 goals this season :-) Oba’s quick and has a great shot on his day but he won’t guarantee a lot of goals
West ham will be hoping there is 3 worse teams in the league this year as they look hopeless

  • 76 expatmag // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:42 AM

Yes, mate. I know you are not a scout and we have no idea what is going on behind the scenes.

All this talk of Zaha, Gomis etc might well just be smoke and mirrors.

Cast your mind back 12 months ago and none of us had an inkling Ashley would sign Mbiwa, Sissoko, Haidara and Gouffran.

We could yet be pleasantly surprised again but I am not that hopeful.

  • 77 Slank // Dec 15, 2013 at 11:43 AM

I don’t get this about getting Zaha in on loan. Who is performing so badly now that a loanee is required?

A loanee is only required when there is no one in the squad who is good enough to fill a particular role and who can play every game. You wouldn’t get in Lukaku and keep him on the bench. Likewise Remy.

You are saying the formation i had in mind after sissokko’s performance against chelsea in Feb2013

but what happened is it took out cabaye out of his game and sissokko is no cabaye in passing..

santon in rw is a good idea.. i agree with that..

it’s not so who is performing badly i think it’s the way our tactics are.

for instant we sometimes play a 4-2-3-1 but we have only 1 natural winger who is useless ( Obertan )

i would pick Asprilla over Ba & Ginola over Robert

  • 94 Ketsbaia9 // Dec 15, 2013 at 12:08 PM

Asprilla didn’t have much pace and was more suited to the italian game. Ginola would be on the bench. Robert was the best winger in the world at the time and scored some unreal goals. What a lethal shot he had.

  • 95 tequilamag // Dec 15, 2013 at 12:09 PM

Kets , no room for Abeid?
What about Beardsley Gascoigne and Waddle .
I will give you 1 out of 11 for that team.

  • 96 Ketsbaia9 // Dec 15, 2013 at 12:10 PM

Olivier Bernard and Didier Domi were also extremely underrated as was Clarence Acuna and Franck Dumas. Ketsbaia shouldn’t have been sold.

  • 97 Ketsbaia9 // Dec 15, 2013 at 12:11 PM

Give it 5 years and then Abeid would fit into that team. He’s made a good star at Panathanikos.

  • 98 cyprus // Dec 15, 2013 at 12:12 PM

I’d pick Bellers, Beardo, Ginola somewhere in that team. Marveaux not quite there yet. But, Kets, respect on predicting the ManU demise.
I’ll stick with my Santon assessment. Do players know he’s about to cut right? Do they get it off him? NO. Do we know Messi is going to cut left? Yes. Same thing.

  • 99 Ketsbaia9 // Dec 15, 2013 at 12:13 PM

Hugo Viana shouldn’t have been sold. I rated him as well. Emre was a good player but he was injury prone.

  • 100 Ketsbaia9 // Dec 15, 2013 at 12:15 PM

I think Santon can become the best left back in the world. He is fantastic on the ball and has got a good shot on him. I can’t wait to see him score a screamer from 40 yards.

  • 101 Ketsbaia9 // Dec 15, 2013 at 12:19 PM

Craig Bellamy was a good player for us. Can’t believe Souness got rid of him and Robert. He completely ruined us and it took us 5 years to recover. Souness should be banged up for that.

  • 102 Ketsbaia9 // Dec 15, 2013 at 12:21 PM

  • 107 Greebol1892 // Dec 15, 2013 at 12:52 PM

We are desperate for a strolla upgrade. Provided that we bust a gut to get Remy (not holding my breath) we still need a hold-up player who can contribute with 10 goals a season. That’s Pardew’s style.
Strolla just never scores…… and Cisse is always offside and just doesn’t fit anymore (appears not to know what to do, eg. look for the ball, move off the ball, pass, etc. Pardewed). Did you see Pardew telling him to bend his runs when he was about to come on? Then what happened…. offside, offside, offside, etc.
I would have Berbatov in a heartbeat, but suspect the wages would be too much for Cashley.
Zaha would be good because he’s better than Obertron who is just fast and that’s it. Doubt we’ll ever see Marveaux again…. I think he’s been banished.

  • 108 toonarmydownsouth // Dec 15, 2013 at 12:52 PM

I don’t think the team is that unbalanced tbh Sissoko has played in that position quiet a few times for Toulouse and tbh he’s looked a beast there

  • 109 toonarmydownsouth // Dec 15, 2013 at 12:56 PM

I don’t think it’s a case of who’s not performing in the starting 11 re Zaha but when obertan is making the bench every week I’d say there is defiantly room for improvement on the squad depth
I disagree that loans are to only improve the starting squad, if they improve the matchday squad where’s the harm?

  • 110 Sav // Dec 15, 2013 at 1:03 PM

Please Mr. Pardew, for Xmas can I have extra shooting practice for Cheick Tiote? The lad loves to take a pop and the crowd encourages him to do so but for the love of the Almighty, please get the odd one on target. Its gettiong beyond a joke, especially in close matches like yesterday where chances are at a premium.

  • 112 Sav // Dec 15, 2013 at 1:08 PM

Newcastle take more shots from outside the box th8is season than almost any other side and while we all like to see a 30-yard screamer, you can’t help thinking its borne of frustration at a lack of forward options or lazy thinking and a ‘here goes nothing’ attitude. Teach them to play the percentages and practice take-ons in the box and close one-twos. Its far more likely to be productive.

  • 113 roy // Dec 15, 2013 at 1:24 PM

Yup that’s why Fulham are propping up the table and West Brom are having a terrible season despite having the biggest transfer and wage budget any of there managers have had to date…..

  • 116 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Dec 15, 2013 at 2:04 PM

    transfer and wages.

Just reading a interesting article in today’s Observer about the battle to close the gap between players wages and clubs/sub-contractors cleaners wages – Sighting Arsenal and Ozil and Man City and Toure for example earns £180.000 per week yet the full time cleaners are on minimum wage of £6.19 a hour In other words it would take the cleaners 13 years to earn what a player earns in a week
    SAD state of affairs.
    wonder what the TOON pays

  • 117 Mister Tuff // Dec 15, 2013 at 2:15 PM

I see that Percy is saying that he is targeting one or two players in January but that most business will be done in the summer and that they have watched a summer prospect 15 times. He has also said we need English players.
Very interesting comments -perhaps mouthwatering as to who they are scouting. Perhaps the English players bit will rule out Gomis. I think we were all desperate to see another forward come in during the summer and that Gomis was better than nothing – looking back he’s not that good really. Do not fancy Berbatov or Zaha.
Expatmag – what’s this talk re Moyes daughter -”she’s a tidy bit of tackle”. A sexist remark that may offend the more politically correct and a phrase a gentleman like myself would never use. Could I suggest a phrase like “she’s a fair maiden” would be more gentlemanly.

  • 118 toonarmydownsouth // Dec 15, 2013 at 2:18 PM

Think we pay average to high mate
Think players like colo/jonas will prob be on fairly high wages as they arrived when we were playing players on average £50-60 k plus coming from La Liga the players there always seem to be on slightly higher wages than say the Bundesliga, Eredivisie and Ligue 1
Then lads like Taylor might be in more being a homegrown player

Then lads like Cabs Tiote HBA etc i reckon are prob in the £30-40 k bracket
Not sure what are overall wage cap is now and how many players we’d be happy to have at the higher/calling end of the cap when it comes to contract renewal’s, think Benny is in his last year come the summer, think he’ll be shown the door if he hasn’t signed a new deal when the window opens

  • 119 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Dec 15, 2013 at 2:31 PM

Benny is a interesting one – is he a luxury and can we can afford him.
Showed signs yesterday that he could be getting back the early season form. Needs to know when to pass and when to dribble, in fact could be a brilliant player because he has it all
EXCEPT his tackling and covering play
Because yesterday the TOON played the pressing game against Southampton (who first half struggled with it) and when you play that you need all ten outfield players to chase cover tackle

  • 120 welshgeordie9 // Dec 15, 2013 at 2:32 PM

  • 126 Tsunki // Dec 15, 2013 at 3:16 PM

Ketsy @100 – I cant wait for Santon to do that either. Literally, I am unable.

After Anitas performance yesterday its a real eye-opener ho some fans can watch plaers with tinted goggles and say he was terrible. What goon would ignore his constant harrying, passing, ground covered and yes even a mazy dribble into the box laughably spurned by our front men, and then actually type out that he was no good? I am sick to death of the chronic ignorance some show of the game in its basic form, and usually these posters are the most persistent, plugging their sad agenda according to the fashion of the moment or what they heard someone else say.

Now let me whine about Santon :D

I was just saying how lately he confounded my criticism by actually looking like he was finally improving, but yesterday opened my eyes to what may be his weakness, and its not good. I thtink when certain players become too busy and have their hands full with their own role, and cannot shore him up, he becomes exposed and has a horrible game. Yesterday Gouffran was kept busy in midfield, and Colo was pegged back by their forwards, ;eaving Santon to deal with his position on his own, and he showed up to be very frail. I think Pardew could see this all too well, hence Haidara came on. I think Haidara will quickly become first choice LB. I said it last season before he got injured, hopefully he will have a better year.

  • 127 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Dec 15, 2013 at 3:22 PM

The biggest problem yesterday was the front two – Remy and Shola were poor yesterday – lacked movement and conviction yesterday nothing stuck to them so ball and with that as you have put it ‘certain players become too busy and have their hands full with their own role’

  • 128 toonarmydownsouth // Dec 15, 2013 at 3:25 PM

3-0 hard to tell watching it if manure were good or villa were abysmal!

  • 129 Ketsbaia9 // Dec 15, 2013 at 3:30 PM

Haha how poor are Villa. Can’t believe Welbeck scored twice. I’d be gutted if England selected Welbeck, Cleverly and Smalling just because they play for Man Utd. It’s not fair. Micah Richards should be in the squad.

  • 130 toonarmydownsouth // Dec 15, 2013 at 3:32 PM

It’s football though mate, some people form there opinion on a player and no matter how well or poorly they go on to do there opinion won’t budge

Personally think it’s hard to say haidara should be ahead of santon based on a few good cameo performances
Santons still a young lad with a lot to learn and think he has been very impressive the last 5-6 games, had one bad mistake yesterday and it cost us just as Remy fluffing a couple of realistically very easy chances cost us
Personally still rate Mbiwa ahead of Colo, not necessarily based on individual strengths but i think Colo drifts more than Mbiwa and we look less disciplined at the back when he plays

  • 131 scout // Dec 15, 2013 at 3:33 PM

Marveaux in a all time best team????
You obviously never saw Beardsley play, he could make a ball talk.

  • 132 toonarmydownsouth // Dec 15, 2013 at 3:35 PM

It’s the nature of England mate, if your English and play for Nanure you pretty much a dead cert for selection!
Take Welbeck, finished last season with the same PL goals tally as Shola, bearing in mind most of Shola’s appearances came from the bench and playing a deeper role yet still gets picked

  • 133 scout // Dec 15, 2013 at 3:35 PM

Anyone remember a defender called HELDER great barrel chest on him

  • 134 Ketsbaia9 // Dec 15, 2013 at 3:38 PM

Man Utd will probably sign Scott Parker, Gareth Barry and Danny Simpson for £80m in January. They will then have a squad full of complete rejects.

  • 135 santonthenewmaldini // Dec 15, 2013 at 3:43 PM

Yeah looked on posts yesterday to see people slagging Anita … funny as the commentators were raving about him for the whole game the guy is crucial to us playing well and it would be a travesty if he gets dropped in the next game

On Santon I think he looks pretty jaded and could do with a little break could also be a good kick up the bum that he needs although he wasnt actually that bad yesterday his misplaced pass led to the goal but we got caught out from a quality move

First half Pardew got the tactics spot on but should not have brought Cisse on and then hit it long we then lost the midfield battle until Arfa came on also whats the deal with taking Gouffran off when he is playing well??

Remy could do with a rest as well he looks tired and is getting a little too greedy at times should really be scoring those 2 chances which would have been a pretty comfortable 3 – 1 win for me he is better on the left wing as well because he gets more space and it stretches teams but he has stopped working as hard in recent games

Will Pardew have the guts to start rotating players again? I hope so as Palace and Stoke are very winnable games could be time for Arfa , Cabaye and Haidara to come in and Shola/Remy and Santon to miss out
