19 Points From 24 – Newcastle Are Doing Something Right

9:50 am, Sunday, December 22nd, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 38 Comments

It’s not in vogue to praise Newcastle too much these days, mainly because of the daft things owner Mike Ashley keeps doing – the latest being to ban the sports writers of the local Journal, Chronicle and Sunday Sun.

mike ashley

Mike Ashley - continues to upset fans at Newcastle

The ban was for giving too much coverage to the march against Ashley in late October – organized by one of the current protest groups – Time 4 Change – and that’s not good coming from Ashley – especially since it’s supposed to be a free press – and the ban has lasted since early in November.

And that has to be difficult for the likes of Lee Ryder, Mark Douglas, Neil Cameron and others.

But if we forget about Mike for  a moment,  things on the training pitch and on the field of play are going just great, and that’s since we were embarrassingly beaten by Sunderland, and it’s still one of only two wins they have had this season and they are rock bottom of the league at Christmas.

And only West Brom have survived when in that position since the Premier League was started back in 1992, and if the Black Cats are to survive they will need to start wining games very soon – draws will not be enough.

Newcastle have won six and drawn one of their last eight games and the only defeat was at Swansea, when our lads didn’t exactly turn up in that first half,  and we didn’t have the rub of the green in the second half.

And we are now seeing the fruits of Newcastle’s excellent transfers this year, even though we should have brought more players into the side over the summer – but starters Debuchy, Sissoko, Gouffran and Remy are all new arrivals this year – and that cannot be bad.

Things are going great at the moment, and if the fans cannot celebrate and enjoy how well Newcastle are doing right now – when can we?

We just hope Newcastle can continue on this excellent run over the Christmas period, and we are now 3 points better off after 17 league games than we were two years ago, when we finished up in 5th place.

We could shock the Premier League again this season – and we hope we do exactly that.

first time we’ve scored 3 in a long time and we actually kept going forward for 90 mins.

The main issue isn’t which browser as much as which user agent they are setup to use. Try viewing the site in desktop rather than mobile mode and most issues will disappear. I don’t use an ad blocker either.

Can someone out there just remind me again exactly what Mike Ashley is doing wrong??? It seems that now the heat is off Pardew for a short time, it’s time to crucify someone else. I’ll say it again in case some of you never heard, I’m no huge Ashley fan, because of his lack of public appearances, but I don’t see much wrong with the club at present and as a total package the club has probably never been as well off. Maybe some of you would prefer an American, Asian or Arab as an owner? Personally I’ll stick with Ashley and look for someone else to release my wrath upon.

I’m sure it’s been touched on earlier but I haven’t seen it yet, but cabaye’s goal was a carbon copy almost of the one at OT where he combined with Sissoko.

I’ve always thought cut – backs on the ground to onrushing midfielders were way more effective than hopeful crosses in the air.

Saylor was shocking last season at the end of last season, especially v Liverpool, and Sunderland at home and away in Portugal and at city again this season.

His time has come and gone. he’s light years behind MYM who can’t get in the team either. If we can get 2M it would be a great result.

    Joe Kinnear

Pardew. That could turn out to be inspired though. never thought I’d say that!

not always should a player value be judge on his current form, this day of age it’s based on age and contract length, i’m not sure how long Saylor has left on his contact but i think it’s between 2-3 years

  • 10 sweendog // Dec 22, 2013 at 10:12 AM

See there’s more talk of cabaye leaving for PSG on merato .. Speculation that they’ll be next week .. I reckon if a bid comes in he’s away .. I hope we get ayew in as the replacement

also imo if he did leave for 2 million i would expect us to bring in Ince for around the same price or cheaper but for the likes of me i can’t see MA spending the 2 million

  • 12 Black and White with an army lol // Dec 22, 2013 at 10:14 AM

it could happen but with the WC around the corner it could be problem for PSG also Cabaye is worth at least 25-30 million of anybody’s money

  • 13 AaranD // Dec 22, 2013 at 10:17 AM

Can’t argue at all with the position we are in. Can only imagine what might be if we managed to grab Lukaku instead of Everton as I’m pretty sure we where sniffing around him and Ba as well.
Back to back home games now and with Arsenal having a tough schedule hopefully take advantage of that and nick a win :D.

Just because the team is doing well does not mean Ashley gets off the hook that easy !

He has purchased us a decent set of players but so what? A club the size of Newcastle which is always in the 20th richest clubs in the world(without oil money) should have a squad of this quality all the time its not acceptable for us to be battling relegation not saying we should be winning leagues but we should always be near the top 8 playing good football to watch every season

But if we beat Stoke and get a result against Arsenal we will be most likely be in the top 4 before the window opens any club with a modicum of ambition will look to bring in some quality to maintain and improve the position

Will Ashley put some money in ? Or will he decide to risk it again ? Get rid of some of the deadwood and get some English football ready players like :

    Shane Long 2 million
    Ince 1 million plus Gosling
    Shawcross 8 million
    (Plus another striker De Jong/Gomis)

    Job done

  • 15 Black and White with an army lol // Dec 22, 2013 at 10:19 AM

also we got to consider that IF Cabaye does get sold off will MA & JFK bring someone else in?

same situation with the Carroll deal and still we don’t know where that money and the 7 million we got of the BA deal went

  • 16 Rotonda heights // Dec 22, 2013 at 10:21 AM

I know but tbh I think he’s gotten away with an awful lot over the years because he’s a geordie (when it suits him!)

He’s threatened to leave before and we’ve caved in to his wage demands etc. This time I think we should say ok, you never play more than 14 games a season on 50k a week, don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

All the chest thumping and badge kissing in the world can not disguise the fact he always has a mistake in him, the ability to do something daft and costly, has very poor positional sense, gets turned very quickly and doesn’t have the technical skills to bring or pass the balls out of defence.

I remember his very first game when his error cost us the game I think and he’s never eradicated that from his game.

  • 17 Slank // Dec 22, 2013 at 10:22 AM

    Black & White @ 5

If there isn’t any players available, in January, with the right quality and at the right price that could slot into the first team then there is no point in buying inferior players.

The most important thing is not to lose our first team regulars.

  • 18 nico // Dec 22, 2013 at 10:22 AM

Ashley has done a lot of good things for the club, mainly due to his very good business sense. His ambition is to keep Newcastle in the top 10. Not sure what the future will hold.
I myself am much happier with him rather than go through what is happening at Cardiff. Did anyone see the Cardiff owner, he was straight out of a Bond movie, might he be actually starting world domination. You get the feeling Malky will be stood in Cardiff owners office later with the boss saying ‘you have disappointed me for the last time’ before pressing the button that activates the trap door and Malky drops into the shark tank.

  • 19 Black and White with an army lol // Dec 22, 2013 at 10:25 AM

Long, Ince i would bring to the toon, Shawcross don’t make us laugh he will probably be more than 8 million plus MA won’t pay that much for any defender unless he’s Zouma, and i wouldn’t go for De jong or Gomis.

De jong seriously out of form and Gomis is another Cisse in the making and both players would want more wages maybe about the 60-70k mark which is a no no

  • 20 Slank // Dec 22, 2013 at 10:25 AM

  • 21 Rotonda heights // Dec 22, 2013 at 10:26 AM

MA has peed off a lot of people with his antics but I think it’s hard to complain when you have Ben Arfa, MYM, Cisse etc on the bench and the likes of Marveaux, Jonas and Bigi etc not even in the squad !

  • 22 Black and White with an army lol // Dec 22, 2013 at 10:29 AM

there’s a few players available in January that could set in first team or rather battle for there place ( Ince, PSG midfielder who’s contract runs out soon but i forgot his name )

  • 23 John Tudor // Dec 22, 2013 at 10:30 AM

    good shout santon

  • 24 Brutooon // Dec 22, 2013 at 10:31 AM

19 out of 24 points is a good thing

but we could be 24 points out of 24 !!!

  • 25 Black and White with an army lol // Dec 22, 2013 at 10:32 AM

first thing first mate did you know MA went of his head when we won Chelsea because he wanted Newcastle to remain between 12th – 15th not much ambition in there is it!

  • 27 sweendog // Dec 22, 2013 at 10:35 AM

I reckon this has Carroll situation written all over it .. Mind you if only Ashley realised we could push on for top 6 or 4 and without serious investment key to this would be keeping cabaye

  • 28 sweendog // Dec 22, 2013 at 10:36 AM

    And 1 or 2 key players .. A striker is a must

  • 29 nico // Dec 22, 2013 at 10:36 AM

Black and White with an army lol

Where did you hear that. Dog n Gun?

  • 30 Novocastrian66 // Dec 22, 2013 at 10:36 AM

Santon; all the players on your wish list are second rate. Shawcross is no better than Taylor. Long is not a regular starter for WBA. Ince is not proven at the top level. Out of the three I would take a punt on Ince.
    Shawcross £8 million? Good grief.
There is something about Long, WBA were prepared to let him go to Hull in the last window. He is talented but there’s a but and I do not know what it is.

  • 31 1949BH PROUDTOBEAGEORDIE // Dec 22, 2013 at 10:40 AM

sweendog at nine could not see newcastle signing a ayew as he is out for about another 5 weeks injured j ayew isnt good enough at the moment .

  • 32 sweendog // Dec 22, 2013 at 10:43 AM

Black n white menez was his name I think .. Good player .. Rather have cabaye though ..ayew is the only one that’s realistic and good enough

  • 33 sweendog // Dec 22, 2013 at 10:44 AM

1949 .. Yep forgot about that

  • 34 sweendog // Dec 22, 2013 at 10:45 AM

Andre ayew is who I’m on about .. Jordan’s Defo not good enough yet

  • 35 sweendog // Dec 22, 2013 at 10:46 AM

I reckon de jong is coming on loan with a view to a permanent switch

  • 36 veto // Dec 22, 2013 at 1:10 PM

never a dull moment as a toon fan , since you started this blog we have been all over the football league and back !

think alot has todo with giving the manager time also and no knee jerk reactions after a poor season .
i think we have found most players need a good 6 month to settle into the league too , its no good making rash judgements on our signings as ones they find their feet ,we find old graham carr’s eye for a player is never to far wrong .

id like to see some investment this window , one thing we havent capitalised on is the momentum we have produced at times over the past couple of years , new signings always boost team morale and we have missed a trick not enhancing the squad when and where possible

  • 37 Malta Mag // Dec 22, 2013 at 2:24 PM

Some utter s#### on here regarding Ashley. Half of those who are in the “anti” camp can’t even explain why??????? Coming back for Stoke game and I may hang a placard around my neck to identify who I am, so the likes of those don’t sit within 50 meters of me!!!!

  • 38 lesh // Dec 22, 2013 at 3:59 PM

Black and White with an army lol……

For gawds sake, give the Carroll & Ba money bit a rest.
Where the hell do you think it’s gone? Pinched out the till was it?

You must’ve heard of the legal requirement for company accounts to be audited and they would identify any jiggery-pokery!!
