Newcastle Star – We Won The Battle Yesterday

8:51 am, Sunday, December 22nd, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 15 Comments

Vurnon Anita has been one of the success stories at Newcastle this season, and he made his 16th appearance for Newcastle yesterday and started the game in a 4-3-3 formation, which again saw Newcastle play very well. and the team looked solid and organized and had 67% of the possession in the game.

And Newcastle were ready for this game, and started on the right tack and were able to fight a relegation threatened side for the 3 points, which at the end of the game we thoroughly deserved, and it could have been even more than 3-0.

Vurnon is a very tidy player, as you would expect from a player who went through the Ajax Youth system in Holland, and with Cheick Tiote picking up his 5th yellow card of the season, after the Ivorian gave another energetic display  in central midfield, Vurnon could well start again against an in-form Stoke City side on Boxing Day at St. James’ Park.

This is what the 5 times capped Dutch International had to say after the game:

“We have a good ambience in the team and you can see that when we get results. Palace need the points but we were ready for a battle today, and we won.”: “It’s always good to have Yohan in the team. We connect well in midfield.”

Even though Vurnon has not been able to become a regular start at Newcastle in his second season, since signing on from Ajax, he is still getting playing time with 53 appearances since he arrived on Tyneside.

And Vurnon was used to stiff competition in Holland, so this is nothing new to him, and the professionalism he has shown at Newcastle since he signed on, has been first class.

And now he will have a chance to show he can play in defensive midfield on Thursday, in place of Cheick, and we will need to get another win to keep our 6th place in the league – and we could go higher up in the league table.

That’s the goal for Boxing Day.

Cracker little player .. Tiote and Anita with cabaye further forward is an excellent combination

With every game Anita shows more steel and seems to be getting to grips with the physicality of the Premier League which is excellent to see. Not afraid of a challenge and it was a huge show of character when he lost the ball in the middle to chase back and make a brilliant sliding challenge to win it back. Great stuff, great attitude. Plays a nice little one two also.

Anita is vital in how we play in games because of him he allows Tiote to just do the simple things and Cabaye to not worry about defending as much he also provides intelligent cover for the wingers and the fullbacks to go forward he is the glue in the middle so while it looks to some that he does nothing in a game that belief could not be further from the truth

We gave Palace no respect because they did not deserve any and thats the way it should be we should be beating them comfortably every time because we have a better team and if we go out with that attitude against Stoke we should beat them as well which means keeping the same team and not going 442 against them which resulted in dropped points against Southampton and Swansea

Also hating Taylor spouting off in the press about getting games hes another player that has stolen a living off Newcastle for too many seasons always injured , always a bad player, always does stupid things in games and always says stupid things in the press ! If a club is stupid enough to pay a fee for him in January I will get the train down from Glasgow and carry him from St James’s to his next club !! I will take Obertan with me and see if the club will take him for free as well !

For all of Williamsons critics he is miles ahead of Taylor in every way he can actually defend , does not make stupid decisions and comes across well in interviews a model pro which we need more of ! If its because we need to have a token local lad in the squad then Dummett would do as a 4th choice defender he will play more games and would probably do a better job

I’m fine with playing 4-5-1 as long as the midfielders chip in with goals, which they are doing. Gives us control.
