Newcastle tried to sign a striker last summer, when we were unsuccessful in getting top target Bafe Gomis through the door, and usually when that’s been the case – like in the summer of 2011, we’ve followed up in January with a signing, and two years ago next month is when Papiss Cisse arrived on Tyneside from SC Freiburg, after we had failed to get Modibo Maiga from Sochaux, and Maiga is now struggling at West Ham.
Loic Remy – indicating Newcastle are number one (obviously)
And there’s a decent possibility that now that Bafe Gomis is available for a quarter of the fee Newcastle were willing to pay for him last summer, Newcastle could bring in the Frenchman next month, and as we reported earlier today, that deal could already be in place.
Newcastle owner Mike Ashley likes a good deal and to pay only £2M for Gomis, after we were willing to pay around £9M for him a short five months ago, is a good deal in anybody’s language.
And on loan striker Loic Remy has gone off the boil a little recently, and hasn’t scored for a number of games, but is still top scorer on Tyneside with 8 goals, and while not scoring recently, he’s still playing well and working hard for the side.
And that dip in form may even be good news for Newcastle, because it wouldn’t be out of the question that he decides to sign permanently for Newcastle in January, and not wait until the summer before deciding which club to join.
Certainly from what Loic has said he is already settled on Tyneside, and with many Frenchman in the squad and Newcastle flying high in 6th place – the highest we have been in the Premier League at this stage of the season since Sir Bobby Robson managed the cub – it would not be a bad choice at all.
So there’s a chance Newcastle could sign two strikers in January, with one of them being Loic Remy – it’s certainly not beyond the realm of possibility.
