Newcastle Could Be Very Close To Signing Transfer Target

Newcastle were after 28 year-old Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis last summer, and Newcastle even agreed a fee with his club of around £9M, but for one reason or another, said to be that his agent(s) were asking for exorbitant fees for the deal to go through, the Frenchman didn’t arrive on Tyneside.

Bafe Gomis to leave Lyon?

Bafe is in the last year of his five-year deal at the French club, and could be signed next month for a much lower fee than what he was available for in the summer, and some reports suggest that fee is as low as £2M.

But whether he will leave next month or become a free agent in the summer is an open question, and he said this to RMC yesterday:

“I think at the end of the season, it’s time for me to go elsewhere.”

Bafe was happy last summer to stay at the club and see out the last year of his contract, but Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas tried to force a sale in the summer, so the French club receive a fee for him, rather than lose him for nothing next summer.

And that attitude from Aulas, who had Gomis training with the Reserves pending a move,  could still be true next month.

So it would seem that Lyon will try to sell him next month, but Newcastle have been very quiet as usual on their transfer targets, so we’re not sure if the French International striker is still a target for the Tyneside club.

But it wouldn’t be too surprising if the Magpies have already lined up Bafe for a January move, and certainly manager Alan Pardew was upbeat on the transfer situation earlier this week, and said that Newcastle were on the ball.

Other clubs in England could also be interested in getting him, and one of them is West Ham.

Former Newcastle striker Andy Carroll cost the Hammers £17M last summer from Liverpool, and is said to be on £100K/week at the east London club, but so far he hasn’t played one minute for his club this season – due to injury.

However, whether Gomis would want to join a club that is currently 4th bottom on only 14 points in the Premier League and fighting relegation is debatable.

Newcastle are on 30 points and 6th top of the Premier League and have beaten Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United so far this season.

If Newcastle are still interested, we have to believe that Bafe would be very keen to join the Tyneside club.

Merry Christmas Everone on here !

As for Gomis, he would still be a good signing but his club and agents pissed us around in the Summer, and will probably try and do the same this january?

I see comparisons with the Remy and QPR saga not too long ago. If Gomis goes for his Medical in London and gets offered a higher salary, he may still end up somewhere else!

The key word in the post above is: “Could”!

I try not to believe anything on here until it Fact is !

Plus Finbogason from Herenveen may be a better prospect ? and cost less in wages?

I would not be surprised if we already have a secretive deal in place to sign Gomis.

There could be any agreement in place, which would take millions away from Lyon, and line the pockets of Newcastle and Gomis… everybody is a winner, except Lyon that is. It certainly makes sense for the sake of 6/12 months patience.
