Anita And Tiote Start – Ben Arfa On Bench

Vurnon Anita has retained his place even though Cheick Tiote returns to the line-up, after a one match suspension against Stoke City, and Ben Arfa finds himself on the bench after a Man of the Match performance on Thursday.

Cheick Tiote – returns to the side today
It looks like Newcastle will play in a 4-3-3 formation, with the middle line of Vurnon Anita, Cheick  Tiote and Yohan Cabaye and a front three of Frenchmen Moussa Sissoko, Loic Remy and Yoan Gouffran.

Sammy Ameobi is on the bench and Steven Taylor again finds himself not included in the match day squad of 18.

For Arsenal Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud start, but no sign of German star Mesut Ozil.

This is going to be a tough game for Newcastle, and we’ll have to come out of the blocks like a steam train at the start of this game – and then keep it up.

Howay The Lads!!

Newcastle: (4-3-3): Tim Krul; Mathieu Debuchy, Mike Williamson, Fabricio Coloccini (c), Davide Santon; Vurnon Anita, Cheick Tiote, Yohan Cabaye; Moussa Sissoko, Loic Remy, Yoan Gouffran

Good selection. Can keep the ball, break up play and also be a threat.

All I can say is, I’m glad to have such significance on this game, for the right reasons, can’t beat the big match nerves! Win and at the halfway stage we’re right in the mix for CL.

Don’t mind the team as I never really thought Pardew would drop Santon ! See how the game pans out could be set up for HBA to come on and win/rescue the game ….

Hmmmm, they’ve shuffled it around a little, gone with more bite to try and not let us dominate them in midfield, with Flamini over Arteta.

Big chance this, their team doesn’t particularly set the alarm bells ringing.

Lets hop Cisse comes on instead of Shola. Santon to score and get man of the match. Him and Debuchy would be my players of the season so far.

Arsenal team to play Newcastle: Szczesny, Sagna, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gibbs, Flamini, Rosicky, Wilshere, Walcott, Cazorla, Giroud

I think Pardew is correct to pack the midfield. I guess we all know that Santon is the key man today.

Ben Arfa on Mertesacker is a battle I would be interested to see.

    Sage/Lilo
I don’t mind Santoon, the one thing I’ve noticed with him is he plays better when not alongside colo, i think they both wander too much and it exposes each other’s weaknesses
However the lad has played nearly every game since signing, I personally think he needs taking out the lime light for a couple of weeks (ala Tiote HBA Cisse Cabaye ) give him rest, let MYM/Haidara/Dummett (although for me MYM should be ahead of colo ) battle it out and I guarantee santon will improve

Personally feel pardew can see this as well as I can’t see any other reason he’s subbed him the last 3-4 games

Would you take a draw if it was offered now?

A more guarded person would… I don’t think that is the Newcastle supporter DNA though… go for broke — this is our backyard.

hadn’t seen the arsenal team til after i wrote that post, whoever is in the Arsenal midfield it hardly matters, Wengers teams always like 2 keep the ball and pass it about in midfield, so packing out the midfield area is def the rite option imo

What is santon now, 22/23? He has plenty of time to learn to be more disciplined. Ideally he should do that now but he has the skill set just needs to start using it to his full potential. I’ve got no problem with him either and think a fee weeks out night make him realise what he needs to do.

And never thought about it before but I think your right that’s he’s better with mbiwa next to him. I think colo may well be off in the summer anyway so we may see mbiwa stepping into the CB role full time then.

That’s what I would have went with given Arsenal like to play keep ball, so we shouldn’t get overrun in midfield with the trio of Cabaye, Tiote & Anita .

I would bring on HBA at around the 65 minute mark whether we are winning or losing as we have seen against Man U he can take some of the pressure off the back four as he is often doubled up on .

And If we are trailing by a goal (hopefully not) then he has the ability to single handily turn a game around.

All in all happy with the set up and think it will be a 2-2 draw but am hoping for the win . HWTL!

thing is though is that Walcott is extremely fast but is weak in strength.

out of our 3 players who can play LB Santon, Haidara & Dummet they are all basically have the same speed but Santon is stronger amongst the 3 which could if used to there ability cause Walcott some concern

Gouffy to carry on his goal scoring exploits at sjp today, Which brings me in turn to the gutti situation. Gutti was a grafter but only kept his place because we had no depth. Now we have gouffy who has proved his worth this season beyond doubt

    Tads,
I have no problem with Santon, he isn’t a bad full back, but he is lacking defensively. So was Ashley Cole for the first few years of his career, so I don’t see it as a problem, as long as he works on it.

For me, having Anita in the midfield gives both full backs a bit of cover as he is an intelligent player and drops in to cover very well. I woud have preferred MYM there today to combat Walcott, but I would normally be fine with Santon playing
