Who Was Newcastle’s Best Player In 1-0 Loss To Arsenal?

3:28 pm, Sunday, December 29th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 47 Comments

Newcastle went down to a sloppy goal conceded  after 65 minutes against Arsenal at St. James’ Park this afternoon, when nobody picked up Giroud who was allowed to head home a free kick from Theo Walcott, and was unmarked, but Newcastle went all out for the equalizer with substitute Ben Arfa prominent, but it wasn’t to be and Newcastle sustained their second defeat in the last 10 games and Arsenal go back to top of the league.

Sickening that we didnt get anything from that game… I cant fault the players much though, they played great, but the official didnt give us much in their area and we reduced arsenal, the self proclaimed ambassedors of great football to play ugly anti football.

  • 2 toonbrother // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:29 PM

at this level the weak links in defence get punished. zero points what a shame. take colsohitty out of this team and we are a top 4 side

  • 3 Ancientcoptic // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:30 PM

    The Spartan MOTM

  • 4 Rotonda heights // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:31 PM

Sad thing is when we had 5 in midfield we never looked like scoring and when we bring Shola on to hit and hope it to, we still look impotent.

Can’t fault the effort but soft free kick given away by Ben Arfa. The guy drives you nuts, absolutely brilliant at times but what a wind up the rest of the time.

It’s been a bad day together with Everton’s result and with Arsenals 42M player Ozil and their other player of their season Ramsay missing I really thought we could get something today.

  • 5 Thump // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:31 PM

No contest. Debuchy tore them apart.

Can we spend the next week training every single player how to win second balls?

    Please?

Pretty please with sugar on top?

Fcuk, I’ll take both Kinnear and Ashley to King Lau’s all you can f’ing eat if we do that.

  • 6 pottsclock // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:33 PM

    Debuchy or Debuchy for MoM.
Don’t know what the thinking was to put Santon on the RW. He did well but so did Sissoko when he was there -perhaps Sissoko was knackered. For me, Sissoko is nowhere near as effective on the left – not even as effective as Gouffran. We lost balance to accommodate Benny on the right and although he can beat a player easily, his choices are still very frustrating.

  • 7 toonking // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:33 PM

    we need more forwards NOW.
remy is looking a striker who is having an easy time he is guarantee a starting place.

it was always going to be our problem remy looses his goal scoring and it’s byebye to tp4 challange

  • 8 Sir Erec // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:34 PM

I agree with Rotonda. I was very optimistic seeing as Ozil and Ramsey were out.

Debuchy was the MOTM by a country mile.

We are doing well to be disappointed to not beat the league leaders, that being said, the 3 points would have been nice.

Extremely annoyed that Man Utd go above us despite the fact that we have been significantly better than they have over the course of the last ten matches

  • 9 niafron // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:35 PM

It’s not about deserving or not.

THis game was lost before it began. We just played exactly the way they need.

Think to it like you were Arsenal:

You’re amongst the top team, you got one million important game per year, you got to get out of St James Park with 3 full point, but without burning yourself, cause you play for victory every three days.

On the positive side, you used to play such games, you know your player could keep their head cool and wait for a good occasion to use their superiors skills.

So what kind of team do you want to have front of you?

-One who will wait quietly and let you enjoy this nice winter sunday noon?
-Or one who will run at you with determination and strong offensive intentions?

  • 10 Rotonda heights // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:35 PM

it would be a bit rich of me to blame Pardew for going for it
by bringing benny on. But you just never know which benny you’re going to get. Extremely frustrating today.

  • 11 Black and White with an army lol // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:35 PM

    Debuchy MOTM

also if Newcastle was given that foul Arsenal wouldn’t of got the goal, i’m so sick of these teams relying on diving to get them goals and the official’s backing the bigger team, once again we were robbed

  • 12 Oleg G // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:36 PM

Deb was the man by far today.
First half all players played well. Krul and Anita were the average players. Colo was giving good smart passes from behind. Santon looked good. Willo surprised me with his ball control today and his decisions in the first half.

Sissoko was good in the first half. Remy was a bit poor. Goofy tried but no result. Cabaye was great in the first half. Tiote played very well.
Shola did nothing basically. Hatem was very alive and made a difference. Haidara was ok. Nothing special.

  • 13 niafron // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:36 PM

    Got to go lads.

    Bonne fin d’après midi messieurs.

  • 14 bishopblaize // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:37 PM

Our Attacking Defender LoL, what a performance had by all!
Still an Arsenal side (top of the shop too)
Gutted nowt come from it BUT that gotta be a massive match for the teams confidence.
AND since when have Arsenal learned to defend?
PROB same time as us :(
    Still a Top Game!

  • 15 Toon1978 // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:38 PM

We played excellent today. SHAME the ref give a free kick that never was for the goal. How long is poor officiating gonna go on for? Was the same against Stoke. Yes we won but Stoke were robbed of a few decisions. Arsenal are not that good.

  • 16 Tsunki // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:38 PM

Remy occupied a vital spot that could have been used by a striker imo. That Debuchy was our main attacking threat down the right all game speaks volumes for those who are supposed to get nto the box.

Coud say Colo let his man drift but equally Krul does not come out for thse balls which is a flaw. But a momentary lapse was the different between two good teams, otherwise a draw was fair.

Disappointing to lose but by no means demoralising, we are up with the best so its all good.

  • 17 NUFC_LEAZES END // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:39 PM

Remy this gouffran that Ben arfa this sissoko that.

End of the day yous should still be very happy and proud of that performance because there is a lot more positives than negatives.

The better team lost today but if we keep performing like that we’ll finish in a Europe place IMO.

    HWTL’s!!!

  • 18 Newcastle for alltid // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:40 PM

Such a shame we didn`t get anything from that game. Arsenal are not THAT good. If you put them under pressure they are struggling. The problem is that we do this too rarely, and let them play their game for large parts of the game. Other than that, the fact that we lost today is down to sloppiness in passing mostly. To many chances wasted because of poor accuracy. Too bad, on another day we might`ve scored two. A shame how they scored on the simplest of chance they had in the game.

  • 19 Black and White with an army lol // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:40 PM

iv’e just spoken to a few Arsenal fans on the stream chat site and even they said Newcastle deserve 3 points and that Newcastle were robbed from the officials considering we should of had 5 free kicks 1 corner and 2 throw ins

  • 20 davetoon // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:40 PM

thought difference was that arsenal players are used to big games and big pressure. they had more composure even though Wenger bottled it a bit by putting 5 at the back.
The longer we can compete around the top 6, the more confidence the players will get playing these games

  • 21 Thump // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:41 PM

@Toon1978: It’s the way of the world, mate. We get all decisions in one game than get nothing the next. Probert got a lot of things wrong, though. I swear somebody took a bung and it certainly wasn’t Krul.

  • 22 Tommyy // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:41 PM

Sir Erec – Seeing Man U above us boils my blood. They’ve been so ordinary and should have lost to both Hull and Norwich but they both crumbled. It’s imperative we pick up 3 points against West Brom or it’s mid table mediocrity for us this season.

On that showing if we could just bring in 2 more players, a top striker and a Top Commanding CB I’d back us to push the top 4. It’s just frustrating that Everton are playing out of their skin this season.

  • 23 roy // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:41 PM

Santon Krul and Anita are shit Pardew is a tactical arsehole HBA is a luxury poser. We will win zero with Pardew and his loser mentality. Arsenal are shit yet pardew the c#nt hands them the game with his sunday football tactics.

  • 24 Ciaran // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:42 PM

Debuchy was easily our best player, the link up play between him and Cabaye will be sorely missed if we end up letting Cabs go in the summer.

However, I voted for Willo because the man won nearly every single header both defensively and offensively and is forcing me to begin to eat a lot of humble pie regarding his ability. Both he and Colo kept Giroud quiet for (nearly) the entire game, and he kept his game very simple, and his own long passes were surprisingly accurate.

I don’t think he was better than Debuchy, but I think he deserved a mention

  • 25 Himanshu Dhingra // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:42 PM

    Santon looked good late on.

  • 26 toonking // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:43 PM

my MOTM was non other than debuchy.

put it this way debuchy was more threating that remy goufran sissoko and cabaye put together.
also aswell as the threat he was never allowing the arsenal width much chance of creating chances.

  • 27 Anita the Legend // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:43 PM

    11 people voted for Cabaye?

    Sorry? I’m confused.

toonbrother – shut the fcuk up with your brojken record will ya! God you’re depressing!!!

  • 31 Sir Erec // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:48 PM

    Tommyy-

Agreed 100% with everything you’ve said. A striker is extremely important for us, I feel like we could do a better job of being threats in the box, another striker would surely help.

Not to use the Football Manager talk, but hopefully moving on Obertan & Jonas (with his contract situation) can help us finance new players

  • 32 JP...from The Rock // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:49 PM

We deserved at least a point today, it was a great effort from the lads, especially Debuchy!

  • 33 davis_toons // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:50 PM

@16 – “Coud say Colo let his man drift but equally Krul does not come out for thse balls which is a flaw. ”

Tsunki..from the replay and the highlights, it shows clearly and has been highlighted that Colo instructed all players to stay on the line and left Giroud behind. (for offside)

Guess whos there to make him on-side?
Williamson. As a typical defender he will chase all players whom are left alone.

Videos replays circle out very clearly that Colo instructs all players to stay on the line.
He should have listen to instruction and stay on the line.

  • 34 LimerickGeordie // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:52 PM

Newcastle were robbed of a point by a combination of a dirty diving team and an official who only gave free kicks to Arsenal.
How there was no free kick given for the push on Sissoko in the build up to the Arsenal free kick that lead to their goal is beyond me.
Also what annoys me is that Sky pundits are all praise for Arsenal and yet they couldn’t get out of their own half from just after Debuchy’s brilliant goal line clearence.
Nevertheless, regarding Pardew’s tactics, in fairness he can’t really be blamed for losing today, I certainly would have liked to see us start with someone playing closer to Remy who is a great finisher but too light to create his own chances.
I feel as long as Colocini is in the team we are liable to concede these soft goals, M’Biwa is less experienced i know but the potential of the man is huge, Debuchy was immense also, Ben Arfa will get stick but to be fair Pardew proably told him to have a crack if the chance arose.
In summation, Newcastle have looked every inch a top 6 side over christmas, wheter or not they will finish in the top 6 i have my doubts, I’d say 8th is realistic. Arsenal will win no title as far as I can see they relied solely on Giroud to score who is not that good and are only 1 injury away from finishing 4th not to mind 1st.

  • 35 JP...from The Rock // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:54 PM

Sir Erec- A striker is a must in January. Goal shy Strolla is not the answer at any time in a match. He offers so little it’s embarrassing. We need that extra goal threat up front that we lack. All the top teams have it, we only have Remy and Gouffran and Remy is not even ours :(

My New Years Wish is that Graham Carr finds a Suarez / Lukaku type striker for us in January and we sign him PERMANENTLY.

  • 36 davis_toons // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:54 PM

For the goal. At first i thought i was Colo poor marking that cause the goal but it was not.

It was Williamson that did not follow instruction and put Giroud on side.

But the team did improve and have played better since.

  • 37 JP...from The Rock // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:56 PM

I would take Ba back and send Obertan, Gutierrez, Amalfitano far away from Newcastle.

Gutierrez thanks for all your running and hard work but we need more than just that. Time for him to go.

Obertan and Amalfitano will never make it.

I doubt Vuckic is worth it either as he is way too injury prone and flatters to deceive.

  • 38 davis_toons // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:57 PM

Except for Strolla we have no Strikers that can trap a ball up there.

Strolla is important for us right now. We need a upgrade Strolla is we wants to improve

  • 39 Sir Erec // Dec 29, 2013 at 3:59 PM

    JP… from The Rock

Agreed. Strolla is embarrassing for the majority of the time, however there are times, seldom as they are, where he can bully defenders.

Too bad he retired from injury, I always fancied Dean Ashton as the next great Newcastle striker after Shearer.

In terms of realistic strikers we could go after, Gomis seems like he won’t move till the summer on a free.. Not sure how good he actually is though..

Luuk De Jong is another we’ve been linked with who is very good in the air, which would be good if we could improve our crossing! I think he could complement Remy quite well.

Getting Remy tied up permanently HAS to be a priority

  • 40 JP...from The Rock // Dec 29, 2013 at 4:00 PM

I bet my left nut that if we keep most players we have on now and finally ‘upgrade’ from Strolla to a ‘proper striker’ we will win some silverware soon after.

  • 41 JP...from The Rock // Dec 29, 2013 at 4:02 PM

Just compare him to any other striker in the EPL and even the championship and he is worse than any of them. It is enough to make you cry that he still gets on the pitch for us :(

Oh well, hopefully this is his last season thank God.

  • 42 Sue_Afc // Dec 29, 2013 at 4:02 PM

I’m sorry but are some of you people for real. Did you actually watch the same game as me?

How did Tiote stay on the field?
So I’d say no you didn’t deserve all 3 points

Debuchy was by far your best player.

You had 5 in midfield and still never looked like scoring….Pardew’s tactics leave a lot to be desired.

As for one of your fellow fans saying Arsenal are not that good – the league table says it all really.

  • 43 JP...from The Rock // Dec 29, 2013 at 4:06 PM

Yup Remy on a permanent deal is A MUST. Any of those strikers is much better than Strolla. He can bully defences at times but that’s it, it’s not like he’s going to score off that. That’s the main problem, it’s the only thing he offers, Stoke type bullying. Not enough at this level.

Every time he’s on is like shooting ourselves on the foot.

I don’t want to be a broken record but it’s been so plain to see for years and now that we have assembled a fabulous squad he really stands out as the weakest link that should be removed entirely.

Really any player is an upgrade from him sadly, he’s that bad. If he weren’t a Geordie he would have been harassed and laughed at from every NUFC fan everywhere.

  • 44 toonicle // Dec 29, 2013 at 4:08 PM

Sorry to say but Colo cost us that goal again. Mbiwa should get a shot against west brom. Anita was absent today which is a shame since he kept Benny from starting.

  • 45 JP...from The Rock // Dec 29, 2013 at 4:09 PM

Liverfool 1-0 up already! The special one is being found out at last, I always knew he was nothing special. Overhyped and arrogant asshole.

I don’t know what result would suit us best between Liverfool v Cheski hmmm.
