I Felt Confident – But The Sending Off Changed Everything

8:04 pm, Wednesday, January 1st, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 97 Comments

The four games in 11 days for Newcastle, probably caught up with some of our players today, but even though we hadn’t looked great in that first half at West Brom, we still thought we’d come away in the second half and win the game – but then Mathieu Debuchy was sent off. :(

mathieu debuchy sent off west brom

Mathieu Debuchy receives his red card from Lee Mason

And Alan Pardew thought it was a definite sending off, so there will presumably be no appeal from Newcastle and the top Frenchman will now miss the next three games.

This is what Pardew said after the game today:

“West Brom sort of let us have possession today and we had a lot of it and we controlled the game to a degree.” “A few breakaways they had but other than that I felt confident that we would win the game – but the sending off did change it of course.”

“Unfortunately, I think it was a red card and then it was uphill and after the amount of games we got tired and we had injuries as well; we had to keep shuffling our team and in the end something give.”

After Newcastle had won seven of nine games in the league and drew one of the other two games, we have now narrowly lost the last two games – so the next thing to do is to regroup and try to get another winning streak going – obviously.

We still have a good side, and maybe some of our fringe layers will now get their chance.

Comments welcome.

my god..pardews back to his favourite thema – injures and tiredness

  • 2 Big Pappa Cissé // Jan 1, 2014 at 8:11 PM

Does Pardew seem to think we are the only team in the PL to be playing these extra games over the festive period ? .

Not to mention some teams have played more games than us as they have been in Europe as well .

Just grow some balls Alan and stop making excuses FFS .

  • 3 Ciaran // Jan 1, 2014 at 8:11 PM

Very disappointed with not only the result, but also the performance. We seemed devoid of any creative energy, lacked the final pass time and time again.

Sissoko is not an attacking player and should be played deeper, he lacks the awareness to pick out a team-mate in the final third.

Gouffran was very poor today, but I would have him in the team every day of the week ahead of HBA in all honesty.

Shola cannot work up front by himself. Maybe in a 4-2-2 with Remy playing very closely off him, but if Shola has to do anything more with the ball than take it down, he is very ineffective.

Debuchy can be one of the best RBs in the league, but until he addresses this red mist/insanity that clouds his judgement every now and then, he will never make it to the top. He will be sorely sorely missed during his suspension.

All in all, what I am taking from today’s result is that we need investment, because we need options/competition up front, and we need depth at the back.

A number of big games coming up, and not having our RB and captain for these games could really hurt us.

  • 4 Belfast // Jan 1, 2014 at 8:15 PM

Well you’d a fully fit squad to choose from.
    So why not rotate ?

  • 5 croftus5678 // Jan 1, 2014 at 8:17 PM

    @1 asenki

did you watch his interview buddy ?
i’m all for calling things when they are wrong but please dont pick out things and twist them ! he said both teams looked tired hence it wasnt a great game and now we have injuries and suspensions.

and it was a poor game ! i cant call the starting line up as he put out the best team we had imo (and before someone says he should have fielded squad players i’m pretty sure those same fans would be saying we should have fielded stronger players if he did) the players just couldnt do that final pass (no idea why) but even arfa had a very poor game again when i expected him to make a big impact !

  • 6 Tsunki // Jan 1, 2014 at 8:19 PM

Belfast you wanna try rotating sometime? :)

  • 7 yorkymag // Jan 1, 2014 at 8:22 PM

Spot someone talking sense at last
We have had a great first half look at the table an imagine how the Mackems are feeling
    Onwards and upwards
Interesting that long was on the bench today now there’s a player who would fit our style perfectly

  • 8 Belfast // Jan 1, 2014 at 8:23 PM

Skunki that’s the best idea you’ve had this year.

  • 9 asenski // Jan 1, 2014 at 8:25 PM

i think pardew still has no idea how to handle with big squad and his clueless strartings last three games is an evidence.
none of the teams is possible of playing the strongest 11 during the festive… the aim is to adjust the ones who will provide picking more points
as to ben arfa- his impact is different when he strarts the game and when comes off the bench imo

  • 10 Jail for Ashley // Jan 1, 2014 at 8:29 PM

Bills said that Debuchy was the type of player that always give his all, my point was that we need someone like Simmo to keep him on his toes, that’s two needless sendings off now, in an ideal scenario Simmo would come in and play out of his skin to make himself undroppable, Debuchy would then twice about aiding and abbetting a fuskin unnecessary defeat !

  • 11 Jail for Ashley // Jan 1, 2014 at 8:30 PM

  • 12 bills-son // Jan 1, 2014 at 8:33 PM

That was such a stupid tackle by Debuchy that it almost deserves a club fine.

Pardew didn’t even look at him as he went off.

  • 13 Tsunki // Jan 1, 2014 at 8:33 PM

belfast its probably going to stay that way ha ha :)

Anyone really want to see what it feels like to be a mackem right now? Promise you will feel instantly better….

  • 14 yorkymag // Jan 1, 2014 at 8:34 PM

I was lashing it down debucey got a heavy touch and tried it recover it it was simple as that
I don’t think it will cause us too much problem santon right back Haida left jobs a good un
Don’t be too hard on debucey he has been the stand out player this season so far and got it slightly wrong on a wet greasy pitch

  • 15 wolfshead@toon // Jan 1, 2014 at 8:35 PM

benny will always be a self indulgent glory hunter and pards wants to be the manager who succeeds with him where others have failed waste of time just sell him ffs and take cisse with him

  • 16 Tsunki // Jan 1, 2014 at 8:37 PM

In perspective it was a horrible day, ref wasnt giving us much either, its been a long time since his last red as well, its not like tiote was a couple of seasons ago.

  • 17 yorkymag // Jan 1, 2014 at 8:38 PM

    Wolfs head
    I have to reluctantly agree
Two games two cut backs two draws
But benny goes for the impossible angle
    Get rid

  • 18 croftus5678 // Jan 1, 2014 at 8:39 PM

    @9 asenki

you could well be right ! but i cant comment after the game has been played as its far too easy once the game has been played !

personaly i wouldnt change a winning team or one thats on form and thats if we play once a week or 3 times in a week it wouldnt make a difference to me ! like i said before the game the only thing i would have changed from arsenal game would have been colo for mbiwa but colo i thought did as well as mbiwa would have done imo.

i thought we played well in last 3 matches though but others have different views which is fair enough.

  • 19 Tsunki // Jan 1, 2014 at 8:40 PM

oh dear hatem and even cisse who hasnt played come in for todays roast…..

  • 20 yorkymag // Jan 1, 2014 at 8:44 PM

I love ben arfa skill but he is so difficult to fit in and is certainly not a team player
The team is less balanced when he plays ,I reluctantly think he has had so many chances it ain’t going to work and we would bke better served moving him on

  • 21 Jail for Ashley // Jan 1, 2014 at 8:55 PM

Are you fuskin winding me up, bills, profanties better than caps lock.

  • 22 John Tudor // Jan 1, 2014 at 8:56 PM

  • 23 bills-son // Jan 1, 2014 at 8:57 PM

Debuchy has been brilliant but that tackle was plain stupid. To lunge into a tackle head on with two sets of studs showing is something that doesn’t come naturally.

I’m not saying he was trying to hurt the guy but Debuchy for whatever reason made a concious decision to go in like that. If you were at the match and haven’t seen it on tv I think you might have a different opinion.

  • 24 Ciaran // Jan 1, 2014 at 8:58 PM

Debuchy’s red card was ridiculous, shocking tackle. He may be one of our best players this season but that is no reason to forgive his insanity today.

With Debuchy’s suspension and Colo’s injury, as well as Shola not being who we need up front in that CF role, we need Ashley to open his cheque book as we do not have the options to cope with any more injuries, and we had a full squad to choose from today!

  • 25 bills-son // Jan 1, 2014 at 8:59 PM

Suspensions and injuries couldn’t have come at a better time… highlights the shortages in the squad, and therefore MAY force mr Ashley to invest this month.

  • 31 matias // Jan 1, 2014 at 9:21 PM

    Big Pappa Cisse.

How did you come up with Alan thinking we are the only ones having busy schedual? He said post match that every club is having the same problem.

Once again there was no stupid excuses from Pardew. That reputation is just an untrue cliche.

  • 32 Marty-Toon // Jan 1, 2014 at 9:23 PM

Only got to see the first half….yawn yawn all the way
Just seen the Debuchy tackle, disgusting and deserved the red even though he just wanted to win the ball.
Pardew saying that we had control of the game???
    What game was he watching?
They had a handful of chances before the red card.
We had one shot all game.
I’m no doom n gloomer but Pards has gotta take the blame today.
Not for Debuchy’s decision but playing tired players after saying that he’d change things.
This is why we have a squad.
Cisse,Ben Arfa,Anita and Mbiwa all quite fresh in comparison to Sissoko,Gouffran,Collocini and Shola
That decision has cost us big again.
He’s a decent coach but not very good at giving squad players a game and keeping things fresh

  • 33 pottsclock // Jan 1, 2014 at 9:24 PM

    Tsunki @13
Nice link, thanks. I particularly liked one of the comments.
“When I was a bairn I was taught to never pass the ball across your own box or close to it. Particularly when the intended recipient has the ball control of Cyril Smith’s Y fronts. ”
Seems like they love Lee Cattermole

  • 34 Thump // Jan 1, 2014 at 9:25 PM

@clinath: That’s a very good way of looking at things. The issue is, will he invest in the right part of the pitch? More importantly, will he invest in a “purple” or will he see the need to have more than 11 first teamers?

Ugh, this club depresses me sometimes.

  • 35 Tsunki // Jan 1, 2014 at 9:26 PM

Pero Debuchy, el es un jugador muy importante para nosotros.

  • 40 Big Pappa Cissé // Jan 1, 2014 at 9:33 PM

    @ matias

So why mention it at all then ? .

All teams are going to be feeling the effects of the festive schedule and everyone knows it isn’t easy, hardly some secret that Pardew has uncovered .

I guarantee he would not have brought player fatigue up post match if we won the game that’s for sure . In fact, on Pardews gravestone it will read :

    Here lies Alan Pardew:

    “We was tired”

  • 41 pottsclock // Jan 1, 2014 at 9:34 PM

No hay necesidad de que el lenguaje, Tsunki

  • 42 Marty-Toon // Jan 1, 2014 at 9:34 PM

    @Ciaran and others
The problem today doesn’t highlight that Ashley needs to open the wallet.
Pardew has players that are available yet won’t use them even knowing the others are tired
Anita hasn’t played toon any full games in a row, could’ve played RW or left as he’s played before(instead of Gouff )
Cisse could’ve started instead of Shola
Ben Arfa could’ve started instead of Sissoko
    Sammy could’ve played
Can’t say that those players would’ve played any worse than those mentioned.
I’m Not against the players that were chosen today just the lack of awareness that Pards showed by picking a tired team-we all said it the last day and he said it himself ,yet he still chooses tthe same players

  • 43 Tsunki // Jan 1, 2014 at 9:37 PM

Thats the thing that separates us from the mackem blogs – if they come on here they’ll get some freakin’ culture! :)

To think we thought we had a hair removal agent in Tiote- imagine having Cattermole in your squad. Like frying dynamite.

Right now we should be in advanced talks with some good players, first of all CF CAM and a winger, but instead of that we will keep playing Shola and having 3 loses in a trot

  • 51 belgrade fan // Jan 1, 2014 at 10:01 PM

Does anybody really cares if we finish 6th or 8th?? I think only MA cares because of money. I really dont. 6 or 16 is the same. No CL, no Europe

  • 52 The next Mike Williamson // Jan 1, 2014 at 10:06 PM

We need a striker who can do more than be big. Shola didn’t look like he had a chance of winning a header against Ollson & Macauley. His only asset besides being big is slowing down play. What sort of skill is that?!!! I’d much rather have someone who can play football or create goals than slow down an attack. No other premiership team would play him.

If Pards believes we need one big man upfront then it should be easy to find one as no-one in the rest of the world plays this way anymore.

  • 56 JP...from The Rock // Jan 1, 2014 at 10:21 PM

Just seen the NUFC TV post WBA interview with Pardew. How in the hell can he say “I can’t fault the effort of the players”. Are you fcuking joking Alan!! What bloody effort! We looked like we didn’t give a fcuk and if it was because of fatigue you should have rotated the squad and that doesn’t mean putting your best mate Strolla on from the start!!

He’s better get it right soon or else our lofty hopes of clinching a top 4 spot will quickly evaporate before our eyes after the amazing run we’ve just had :/

  • 57 Brutooon // Jan 1, 2014 at 10:26 PM

    1) Cabaye,Tiote, Sissoko and even Remy look tired. pass the ball to the opposition most of the time

    2) Shola Ameobi is USELESS. said this since the past 13 seasons, hopefully Nigeria would never bring him to the World Cup!

    3) As a HBA biggest fan, HBA got the skills but lack the brains. He should shoot the last min chance he got!

    4) Our current squad is enough to perform for half a season but we need NEW signings if we are to compete for Europe or top 8

    5) Against cardiff do rest some of our main players and regroup for the man city game

  • 58 Graeme // Jan 1, 2014 at 10:28 PM

To be fair, Sholla has been a passenger for about the last 5 years. When was the last time he actualy scored a league goal? And this is our “Go to” No2 striker!!

The man is as much a striker as the lollipop lady in West Denton. He has been past his “Sell-By” date for at least 4 years, but he’s Mr Nice Guy. The man is supposed to be a Proffessional Football Player” first and foremost and he simply doesnt have what it takes to be considered as a Striker in top class football.

Unfortunately, being “Mr Nice Guy” doesnt cut it at this level. I hope he has a wonderful time in Brazil, with Nigeria and that he finds himself a contract while he is there. There is NO WAY he should be offered another Contract at NUFC – Bambi simply isnt good enough to justify his squad number today.

  • 59 toon22 // Jan 1, 2014 at 10:30 PM

    For me it showed,
The squad look tired,Goofy needs a rest imo.
    Shola isnt good enough.
    Cisse isnt good enough.
Remy is good enough but needs help/rest/replacing depending on his contract.

Bottom line we dont have the strikers atm,we need a big signing with Cisse going out the door maybe even Shola following him.

Remy is here till the end of the season?but he is all we have right now Goofy has been a revilation this season but is knackered.

We need to get a decent striker and a big lump whos good in the air(shola fits one of the criteria)

  • 60 Ciaran // Jan 1, 2014 at 10:30 PM

Seriously hope you’re joking. Anita – a CM – could have played RW or LW?

Cisse instead of Shola in a lone CF role? Cisse is useless at holding the ball up, absolutely rubbish so no he couldn’t have.

HBA could have played instead of Sissoko but HBA was as ineffective as any player on the pitch today.

Sammy Ameobi should be out on loan getting regular game time as I do not think he is good enough for our 1st team.

All in all, the point I am getting at is, our options are poor, and we need Ashley to sign some players.

  • 61 jimmysmith // Jan 1, 2014 at 10:31 PM

I’d happily swap all of Obertan, Marv, Vuckic, Tav, and Fergie plus cash for one genuine tip top central attacking goal scoring midfielder. I think we’d be quids in.

Mike go right ahead and do that, in haste, and don’t mention it.

  • 62 toon22 // Jan 1, 2014 at 10:33 PM

Imho even if we got Heskey from where ever he is he would be better than Shola is atm.

  • 63 Jail for Ashley // Jan 1, 2014 at 10:36 PM

In your opinion why was Cisse so successful in his first season in the PL ?

  • 64 Ancientcoptic // Jan 1, 2014 at 10:42 PM

I think it is unfair to say Ben Arfa should be out of the team, because he did not square the ball at the end of the game.

Why must Ben Arfa be dropped every time he makes a mistake, I do not here any calls for Sissoko to be dropped from the side, and he had an absolute horrible game…

    One rule for all!

  • 65 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 1, 2014 at 10:45 PM

Because when Cisse signed he didn’t have to work for it
We were flying, the surprise package of the season and the team was brimming with confidence
It’s been more telling since then, he offers nothing, and I do mean absolutely nothing, if he’s not putting the ball in the net

Even when he left Freiburg some fans were as relieved as they were gutted, and they apparently improved on the whole in terms if play as a team

  • 66 Brutooon // Jan 1, 2014 at 10:53 PM

Shola Ameobi shudnt go to the world cup cause he is Sh*T

World Cup is only for good players!!!

What if Shola Ameobi make fun of himself during the world cup and people will where does this player come from? “Newcastle United?”

  • 67 jimmysmith // Jan 1, 2014 at 10:53 PM

I think it is fair to say though that Benny gets himself into some fantastic positions in a remarkable manner before far too often making a pigs ear of it in a fairly spectacularly unprofessional way. Maybe he should be given a bag to whip out and breathe into at the climactic moment, you know, like Gutis’ spidey mask.

  • 68 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Jan 1, 2014 at 10:55 PM

Poor poor showing started brightly then went doon hill rapidly.
Ball retention was crap kept giving it back to West Brom
Decision making was crap when to pass and when to keep hold of ball.
Shola waste of space today – could not get his arse out of first gear and how many fouls did he give away.
Goufron poorest game in a TOON shirt.

Cabaye plays to deep when Anita is not playing alongside Tiote.

Ben Arfa needs to get his head up

Got to buy a forward as soon as poss and another creative midfield player.

All in All a p*ss poor performance against a poor team.

MOM I give it to Williamson

  • 69 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 1, 2014 at 11:02 PM

Is there not a huge difference between bad form and bad decision making?
2 games in a row the lad just needed to square it, is it guaranteed goal?
Not by any means but it’s surely a much better chance to come away with a point which with how the league is this season is surely vital?

I’m not with others when people say HBA doesn’t defend, for me he just doesn’t play as one if team
For me were not a team like Chelsea or spurs where were brimming with attacking talent, and it would be fantastic to see HBA be that player for us but he needs to get back to doing what he was at the start of the season, getting the simple stuff right again

Completely agree that Sissoko was poor today and vs Stoke but for me he’s in the squad ahead of HBA is purely because he’ll look to create a chance than take the chancel
Whether that’s right or wrong, or if it’s the brand of football us fans want to see or not i think under pardew we look better with the more rigid shape and have players like Sissoko in the squad and 2 up top, sadly that’s not a brand that imho suits HBA, so looking at it that Pardew isn’t going anywhere I just can’t see where HBA fits into that!

I agree with what you were saying earlier that Sissoko isn’t a long term fix on the right and i think Pardew knows that hence why he went after Llana in the summer ( a player i was really trying to sell on here as i believed that’s the kind of players he was after so was relieved when he said he’d gone for him!)

  • 70 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 1, 2014 at 11:03 PM

Wow sorry ancient that turned into a bit of an essay!

  • 71 Ciaran // Jan 1, 2014 at 11:03 PM

Cisse is a scorer of great goals, not a scorer of many goals. In his first few months here, everything he hit went in. How many of his goals were tap ins? His 2 against Chelsea, his goal against Swansea et al.

He seemed to be operating on instinct a lot more, but I think it was a purple patch, not only in his Newcastle career, but in his career as a whole. He has never scored many goals at any stage of his career, and without goals he is useless as he has no other redeeming features in his game.

It is a shame as he looked like he would go on to be a legend at the Toon, but as it stands, he doesn’t even look worthy of the 9 million quid we paid for him, and I doubt any club would be willing to pay that for him, never mind the figure that Ashley would want for him.

  • 72 beefman13 // Jan 1, 2014 at 11:06 PM

Ah the Shola issue, no goals as we ll know in near on 13 months in the prem and still gets a prem start, he does not warrent it at all, contributed nowt today apart from giving daft free kicks away.

JK come on we need a top quality striker in at the very least, dont piss us about like the previous window, earn some respect get a few through the doors, we are starting to flag a wee bit, Man City next and a few tricky ones after that s well, we need reinforcments to bolster our flagging troops.

  • 73 jimmysmith // Jan 1, 2014 at 11:14 PM

I think its time to bring both Cisse and Benny right back into the fold. Both have genuine qualities and are capable of being go to assets, and we have half a season where we are safe, to successfully build a team around them or recognize we need move them on and look at other options.

  • 74 Ancientcoptic // Jan 1, 2014 at 11:23 PM

TDS – I see your point, the conservative approach is probably considered to be smarter… grafting out results and building a solid unit, but for me that guarantees us nothing more than mid-table and short term gains. Being slightly bias towards Newcastle, I think we are bigger than building a team to play like Everton under Moyes.

I am not saying Ben Arfa is as good as Suarez, but some of the best attacking players can be very wasteful – if Ben Arfa plays 80+ minutes, he will get himself into situations where he will be wasteful, but on occasions he will get it right, and that means guaranteed scoring opportunities.

Man City are flying this season, and I don’t think they look anything like a team… it is their talent bombing forward that is getting them goals.

It all depends on the approach you like to see… I would rather see us playing with flair and taking risks…

You can get into the ring to box smart, or you can try to knock your opponent out, while risking your guard… for me, the best clubs go for knock out blows.

I like Debuchy, but that was a very stupid tackle.

Without deflections, wonder strikes, opposition mistakes or own goals we struggle to score regular team goals. The few games of good results are an indication of the potential they possess.

I have no doubt in the ability of the players, they are very good, and of an international standard.

It’s a crime that arguably our most talented player is castaway on the bench is order to kuyp fings toigh et th beck.

As we were watching the game and seeing forwards spending a lot of the time as fullbacks, it was very unsatisfying to see attacking potential go to waste, as it usually does under Pardew.

We recalled David Ginola, and his lack of backtracking, yet the team used his immense talent in attack as part of our defence. If we are in possession, they were not, therefore, they could not score.

What a great mentality those days were. The simple essence of how the game should be played. We are going to score one more than the opposition because that will win us the game. It is a world far away from the overly cautious approach which plagues us at present.

It’s like watching Audley Harrison in the boxing ring. Bags of capable potential, yet vastly underused and wasted.

The best teams are exactly that – teams. HBA doesn’t play for a team, he plays for himself.

  • 77 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 1, 2014 at 11:38 PM

I agree and yeah it does depend on your style preference but i can’t see Pardew ever favouring that fluid attacking all out style

So with that in mind, and also agreeing were looking to build steadily long term, i can’t see the point in having Ben Arfa’s or Marvuex’s and see us going for more of your Lamberts Llana’s etc, i think that’s the style he’s used to and the only one he can use effectively

I wish people would differentiate between, tads, TDS and Toon Down Sarf, very different personalities and opinions, two of them I find reasonable !

  • 79 Laurent Robert 32 // Jan 1, 2014 at 11:40 PM

Ancient, I wrote the boxing bit without reading yours, but good work and right on ;-)

Arturo Gatti is one of my favourite boxers. He gave it his all by going forward and being positive, which I like to see in football as well. It is the root enjoyment of the game, attacking and trying to score.

Only one person can win the league, the rest can at least play in a way which brings enjoyment to themselves and the fans alike. That is what my philosophy is and that is how it will remain.

I’ll let the other’s lads in the down south club house you find them reasonable ;)

Interesting but I think we do not have sufficient quality in depth and injury/suspensions in certain positions are potentially very damaging. We definitely need another forward, ideally two, though that will not happen in January, and only Willo’s recent run of good form has covered the gap at CB – we definitely need the Colo replacement sooner rather than later.
I’d also want another creative player or for Anita to have that role. I think Cabs will stay as the topdog will want to sell him after the World Cup with an enhanced value. Could see Manure coming in for him though.
I’m far more critical of Benny’s poor decision making around the box than his work rate tackling back as it makes him a liability. Sadly Remy is also too greedy. Can’t see Marv getting an extended run eithre as he is too inconsistent and that is our main failing as a side. I think we have as good a side as Everton but they are better coached and are much more consistent.

Ciaran, I am well aware of your view of Ben Arfa… there would be little point in going over it all again; we will have to disagree on that one.

Laurent Robert 32, I agree with what you wrote. I am prone to thinking that Keegan would have loved Ben Arfa, and would be playing him if he were in charge of our squad at the moment.

Investment won’t cure anything. 4 games in 11 days and Mbiwa was still benched. Gouffran was tired against Arsenal but still wasnt rested.

Pardew is too scared of getting belted to alter his squad. Thst is why players like Guti used to start every game regardless of form.

And can someone please tell me when the last time we won whilst playing 4-3-3 was? Im honestly not sure.

  • 86 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 2, 2014 at 12:32 AM

Big fan if both Cabella and Grenier in ligue 1 but would be amazed if we could pull a coup like that off

    Yo yo
    Good post mate

  • 87 Sazzer // Jan 2, 2014 at 12:43 AM

It depends of the ambitions of the club.We do have enough quality and points now to be safe for next year.

But if we do nothing in this window we risk losing our best players in the summer and it will much harder to replace them with quality players if we are on the bottom half of the table.

If don’t have any money we should sell our fringe players and maybe more semi-important players in this window and buy as many quality players as we can while it looks like we are challenging.

  • 88 Sazzer // Jan 2, 2014 at 1:07 AM

Yeah it would be a coup. I think we could get him if we are prepared to invest more money then before though and the big wolfs stay out of the picture.

  • 89 theartfuldodger // Jan 2, 2014 at 5:18 AM

Im surprised Pardew hasnt talked about rotation. Not a word on why Gutierrez or marveaux or sammy or obertan did not get a game in this busy period.

I dont think he is scared to put gutirrez in. He played almost every game last season. Marveaux was involved too and so were sammy and obertan. Not playing them leaves only anita as midfield depth.

I think Pardew went with his “I see the game this way in my head” policy. He knew both teams were tired and he went for 0-0 hoping to nick a goal in the end. Now that would work only if we dint fall behind in terms of players or goals. And guess what…it dint work.

Pardew needs to rotate and put the fittest team rather than going for 0-0 and nicking a goal. That plan has no backup plan !!!

I also wonder if he is trying to prove a point to kinnear.

  • 90 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 2, 2014 at 7:10 AM

I am not going to say I told you so cause I don’t think we in cricis and I believe just as Pardew has said on many occasions that we have depth (it doesn’t mean I think we shouldn’t improve the tream), but I did warn this would happen!

…it happens when you only have 12 players on form and you clearly don’t trust the others do do well! and it happens when at some point non of your foewards are scoring goals! this was bound to happen at some point!

Lets just hope we turn it around before it turns ugly – I still think we can do that!

  • 91 stuart no9 // Jan 2, 2014 at 7:22 AM

So pardew reckons ” we were tired and had injuries ” that’s ok then . Didn’t realise we were the only team to have a heavy fixture list over Xmas , or is the real reason – the pardew luck has finally run out ???? I think the latter !

  • 92 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 2, 2014 at 7:33 AM

…and it happens we luck eventually runs out! Yesterday was just a really bad setup from Pardew and bad performance from the players!

WBA was the better team even before the supposed red card (I am saying that since the ref didn’t think either the WBA player who tackled Cabs with the studs first nor Krul should have a red card)

…come to think of it the ref was very inconsistant in that game. So was the ref in the Man Utd game by the way (the refs are actually quite bad these days if you ask me)

  • 93 tonynufc // Jan 2, 2014 at 7:43 AM

Daily fail reporting were back in 4 Remy cabella. Wud use him on the wing if we’re lucky to keep cabaye

  • 94 Thump // Jan 2, 2014 at 7:53 AM

@Blofal: Depends what you see as 4-3-3, tbh. There isn’t a whole lot of difference between 4-5-1 and 4-3-3 except in mentality, and we have a habit of switching formations multiple times in a game (4-6-0 during defence, 4-5-1 during build, 4-3-3 during attack etc.) but I think Palace was the last time we won using that formation. Even then you could hardly call Sissoko a wide man or an inside forward so you could make a pretty solid argument for us actually playing 4-5-1.

It’s hard to tell with Pardew’s Newcastle what formation we’re playing.

  • 95 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Jan 2, 2014 at 8:09 AM

    Not a excuse for yesterday
but I do think that some players are looking jaded
So for Saturdays cup game do you go for a shadow team:
    Hiadara, Taylor, Mbiwa, Dummett
Anita, Marveaux, Tiote, Santon, Ben Arfa

  • 96 AaranD // Jan 2, 2014 at 8:17 AM

That team should be strong enough to get past a leaderless Cardiff. Would be good to see if Santon can hack it on the wing for a whole game.

  • 97 mindshaft // Jan 2, 2014 at 8:34 AM

Totally agree about using the ‘squad’ for cup game, we can’t afford any further injuries / suspensions and players such as Gouff and Remy look like they need a break
    The poor bairns
Cardiff look like they’ll have appointed Solksjar by the cup game so no doubt Cardiff players will be trying to put in a show for him.
Still hate him for hacking down Rob Lee when through 1 on 1 and ultimately losing us the game and title :(
