Well after all of our good work it looks like it will be 3 defeats on the bounce .

Today showed we desperately need investment as Shola is just not good enough at all .

Also why didn’t we play the 4-5-1 that got us results against Man U & Palace away ? . Pardew made some very poor subs as well.

  • 2 TorqToon // Jan 1, 2014 at 5:54 PM

looked shattered. Highlighted our lack of a true quality squad depth.

However, not a disaster. 8th in the league and even with our last 2 defeats, we have shown true quality and desire.

Today however, we came up short.

    Roll in Cardiff.

How will our defense line up now with Debuchy banned and Colo injured?

Not good news especially when we’ve just lost our second successive match.

  • 4 mattyNUFC // Jan 1, 2014 at 5:55 PM

    what an abysmal performance.

williamson the only deserving MOTM. standing out for disgraceful performances were gouffran, santon, colo, ameobi and sissoko, with the lattermost being the worst IMO. hell, everyone was very poor today. i still can’t tell what kind of formation we are playing.

one thing on pardew is what the hell was ameobi doing on the pitch? we are already incapable of moving up the pitch as a unit so having shola trod around on the middle of the park because he’s too slow to be involved in any kind of counter-attack is nearly as bad as being a man down. anyway, it’s over. we better get it right v City.

  • 5 Nufc-83 // Jan 1, 2014 at 5:56 PM

Does anyone else think that Remy is so overhyped and the only reason we need him so badly is because our other st’s are totally useless. I honesltly think we have one of the worst strikeforce’s in the league. On Remy he has great finishing technique but that is all i can see that he has???? When he first came i thought he had bags of pace which is what we have needed since the bellamy days yet he is actually average and the only defender i have actually seen him go by is mertasacker which i could do tbh. He is poor with his back to goal and cant hold the play up well so the only position he should be in is a wide left position which he played today. For this i would rather have a trcky winger who can provide for the central st (even though we do not have one capable of mentioning) that can also chip in with goals. We are in desperate need of a striker that can lead the line and hold play up under pressure as Ameobi would be lucky to play for a lower championship team let alone a team in top half of prem!!

Torq…mate wasn’t it more a question of not using our squad depth than saying we lack depth?

…we cannot criticize the squad depth when the gaffer I’d not using what he’s got ad we speak!

This blog just shows how fickle fans really are. This is the first poor performance in a while.

Well said moan when we win moan when we lose, just be grateful we are in the top half of the league.

We need some fresh legs. JONAS is the answer. He links up so well with Shola.

  • 10 Ancientcoptic // Jan 1, 2014 at 5:59 PM

It may be time to start building a team of players that are natural in their positions.

Gouffran is a striker playing as a winger.

Sissoko is a box to box midfielder playing as a winger.

Remy is a left forward playing as a central striker.

Santon is arguably a winger playing as a left back.

Cabaye is a holding midfielder one week, then an advanced midfielder the next.

Generally, the only player playing in position in front of our defence is Tiote.

The team is an experiment stuck on repeat.

  • 11 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 1, 2014 at 6:01 PM

    Jesper
    What depth?
With MYM HBA and Cisse how is that quality in depth exactly?

  • 12 Tsunki // Jan 1, 2014 at 6:01 PM

Berahinos happy look is more of relief because he is one very average player.

Jesper – the attacking FB idea is great but has to be done well or not at all.You cant just have pace and the ability to cross, you also need discernment as to when it is a good idea, awareness and co-operation with the guy ahead of you who overlaps or the CB who is willing to plug the gap you leave behind. Debuchy seems to be getting that with Willo and Sissoko, Santon with Colo and Gouffran. However, and I realise I am starting to be a broken record on him, Santon dtends to drift back randomly aafter he goes forward, leaving gouffran back or Colo pulled wide left for large parts of the game.

  • 13 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 1, 2014 at 6:02 PM

Nufc…you probably have a point there!

…we like to either put our forwards up on a pedestal or tear them down again.

  • 14 pottsclock // Jan 1, 2014 at 6:03 PM

We will miss Debuchy as a player.
We’ll miss Collo as an organiser. I think Mbiwa is as good a player but when Collo has not played we have not been organised at the back. Willo has never been the organiser even when playing with Staylor.
For me, we got a bit disorganised in the back four with Debuchy & Collo off and that was the root cause of the penalty.
    …someone needs to step up.

  • 15 Thump // Jan 1, 2014 at 6:05 PM

Only lineup I can see in defence is Santon, Willo, MYM, Haidara.

  • 16 Tsunki // Jan 1, 2014 at 6:06 PM

Ancient – mostly agree with that. Why does Pardew not see the obvious?

BTW does anyone else think Sissoko has the poorest cross/pass/touch in the league? He is starting to seriously do my head in.

  • 17 Big Pappa Cissé // Jan 1, 2014 at 6:06 PM

    @ Ancient

I agree m8, except Sissoko has looked his best for us on the wing although Gouffran should be in a more central role .

I would like to see us play :

    —————————–Krul——————————-

    –Debuchy——–Willo——–M’biwa——–Haidara—

    —Sissoko——–Cabaye——–Tiote———–HBA—-

    ——————-Gouffran——–Remy——————–

    Or

    —————————–Krul——————————-

    –Debuchy——–Willo——–M’biwa——–Haidara—

    ———Sissoko———–Tiote————Cabaye——–

    ———-HBA———–Gouffran———–Remy——–

  • 18 Big Pappa Cissé // Jan 1, 2014 at 6:08 PM

I know some people don’t rate HBA, but the fact Shola gets in the team ahead of him is ridiculous IMO .

  • 19 Our Toon // Jan 1, 2014 at 6:08 PM

    Toonarmydownsouth

Impact sub after 20mins? Haha says it all mate, it’s not HBA fan club as you put it but rather a Shola should never be playing for us!! Welshmag says 1 poor performance but Stoke we were shocking until the reds came and arsenal we created nothing!! Remy is not an out and out cf better coming in off the wing, only problem with that is we need to employ babysitters for fullbacks!!

  • 20 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 1, 2014 at 6:08 PM

    Ancientcoptic
Sissoko played a huge number of games for both Toulouse and France as a RM and has said himself his natural role is a CAM

Goofy has also played a large part if his career on the left side of attack

Remy actually played most his career on the Right side of attack not left

Cabaye has said he like’s playing just in front of the back four, it’s the fans asking for him to be more attacking

As fans a large number have no clue about our squad yet seem to think they know much better than the coaching staff

One bad result and the amount of complete and utter sh1te being blurted out on here is embarrassing
Most fans said 8th place would be a decent season, we’re on course for that

    Our Toon
When did I say shola should start in front of him?
HBA isn’t a CF and should be no where the middle of the pitch because he’s woeful there
HBA on the bench doesn’t highlight how bad Shola is it highlights the fact we need a proper CAM
Neither Shola or HBA should be playing there but over the last 3 months shola has been far more effective in the hole than Benny ever has been

  • 24 Tsunki // Jan 1, 2014 at 6:12 PM

Sissoko flatters to deceive. His bursting strides forward usually end in nothing. Not having a proper poaching striker in the right place, and poor service to the front is costing us, we are effectively toothless. This is a problem that as been coming for some time. The only time we have a threat is when Hatem comes in from the right or just behind the strikers. We need to get him and cisse on to push defenders back to their goal, presently anything going into the box is cut out easily or there is nobody there to receive it.

  • 25 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 1, 2014 at 6:13 PM

    JFA
Aye he pulled him to the touch line and started putting Stanley blades on the bottom of his boots!!

  • 26 TorqToon // Jan 1, 2014 at 6:14 PM

Jesp – I don’t believe we have quality squad depth. Yes it’s better than it was, but still not brilliant. HBA has been hot and cold this season, cisse – mainly cold and yanga is our only true defensive quality. With Colo out, I think we will be ok with willo and yanga as they play very well together. But we need reinforcements this window big time. If Cabaye is out, we lack creativity.

However, we CANT surely moan too much. We are still in excellent shape in the league and nobody could’ve expected us to take points off the likes of man u, spurs etc, let alone the amount of points we have won.

Still much prefer where we are now, to where we were at last season. HWTL

  • 28 Our Toon // Jan 1, 2014 at 6:20 PM

    Toonarmydownsouth

France and Toulouse both used Sissoko as a holding midfielder and not often as an attacking midfielder or winger, infact the French manager laughed when the topic of Sissokos new position came up in a press conference!! We consistently play players out of position!! I think his work rate defensively and his lack of passing crossing and everything else is pretty apparent that the lad is a holding midfielder!! Yaya Toure started as a holding midfielder but then matured into a box to box beast, Sissoko can do the same but needs to be utilised in the middle holding!!

    Torq toon

We haven’t used our squad at all during these games and that is down to management, the last time Shola started a game away from home we lost horribly to a striker less Swansea!! Although I think santon is a better fullback than haidara the switch today would have been good as well as MYM and HBA, Marv is also waiting for a game!! Players are there to use!!

  • 29 Tsunki // Jan 1, 2014 at 6:21 PM

tads – put Remy on the right and nothing will change with his game I think. I dont care if Sissoko played on the right and fancies himself as CAM, he is a box-to-box with his striding pace and has a lousy touch with a terrible eye for a final ball. We currently do not lay any strikers who wait on the defensive line to spring the offside trap. Where players think they should play is often contradicted by what they display when they are on the pitch. For me Anita around the middle would be better all day long than Sissoko on the right or AM

  • 30 Ancientcoptic // Jan 1, 2014 at 6:24 PM

toonarmydownsouth – I was not speaking about which positions the stated players have played in, in the past.

I was speaking about which position they are natural in – arguably should be playing in.

Remy drifts out of the left quite often, you can see that is natural for him.

Sissoko obviously does not have the decision making to be an attacking midfielder; although as others have said, he has been putting in great performances on the right wing, but I believe that is mostly down to his covering work for Debuchy, more than him being a ‘natural,’ right winger.

Gouffran playing on the left side of the attack is not the same as playing as a left winger, and as I said previously, that is where I think Remy should be playing – they cannot both play there…

”Cabaye has said he like’s playing just in front of the back four, it’s the fans asking for him to be more attacking” which is not in contradiction with what I was stating.

I am sorry you feel embarrassed by the fellow fans of your club… perhaps you should try get more into the camaraderie of the other fans…

If you feel certain fans do not have the same knowledge of the club as you, perhaps you could find some element of respect for the fact they are on your side, and want the same things for the club – maybe just via a different method.

  • 31 toonbrother // Jan 1, 2014 at 6:28 PM

Pardew has never understood the principle of rotation.
Mourinho made 6 changes today and too 3 points at sourhampton.

Pardew on the other hand has made Cabaye and tiote play close to 300 minutes in the last 7 days.
    one thing for sure.

If we make it into |Europe next season we will be relegation candidates due to pardumb’s stupidity

  • 32 Our Toon // Jan 1, 2014 at 6:29 PM

I didn’t say HBA should play upfront he should play RW, give the opposition something to think about rather than worry about what HBA won’t odd defensively!! 451 mate it’s simple, that way Shola doesn’t start….worked for last 2 away games but today he changed it!! Was fearful of a caretaker managers team rather than concentrating on this on teams strengths!! Coutinho is the closest example I can give to HBA the lad doesn’t track back but is a genius on the ball, yet Brendan Rodgers plays Coutinho away to Citeh and every other game because he doesn’t believe in babysitting!! We need a serious rethink on how best to utilise our attacking players

Cabaye does prefer to sit back in midfield but we have no other options as he is currently the only in the starting 11 who can create something!! Hence playing in an attacking position

  • 33 martoon // Jan 1, 2014 at 6:30 PM

It was a bad day at the office and I’m gutted we lost a game I thought we could win. But let’s get a sense of perspective we’ve been quite fortunate with injuries so far and Mbiwa can cover for Colo in fact some of you think he should be playing anyway. We’ve got fullback cover with |Dummett and Haidara. I thought it was brave of Pardew to pick Shola to try and attack unfortunately Shola decided to have one of his anonymous days and in hindsight Anita and 4 5 1 would have been a better option. Also HBA didn’t pull up any trees when he came on in fact he missed a good chance at the death.

  • 35 NUFCarter // Jan 1, 2014 at 6:31 PM

Lots of changes for the Cardiff game, so some of the first teamers like Gouffran can finally have a rest. Krul in goal. Dummett, M’biwa, Taylor and Haidara at the back. HBA, Tiote, Anita, Gutierrez and Marveaux in the middle with Cisse up front.
Bench: Elliot, Remy, Bigirimanna, Williamson, Obertan, S. Ameobi and Sissoko.

Read the last 4-5 topics which the general input is pardew out Debuchy’s sh1t shola’s sh1t sissoko’s sh1t
    How is that not embarrassing

As for there natural positions, how do you know there natural positions, your basing that solely on your opinion, on what you think there attributes are suited to based on the 90 minutes you see
The players and coaching staff know there game a hell of a lot better than you or me think we do

Every thing you’ve said about Sissoko is exactly how i see HBA

  • 38 bills-son // Jan 1, 2014 at 6:34 PM

    Torq,

Agreed. Our squad depth is better than last season but it is probably a 7th-10th squad and defo not a top 6 squad as it stands.

I doubt whether any player other than Debuchy and Cabaye and possibly Krul and Tiote would be in the first 15 of a top four side so talk of us qualifying for the CL is pie in the sky.

Our most creative player, Cabaye, rarely stamps himself on a game and Anita, Sissoko and Gouffran offer more in effort than they do in creativity. This is why we create few chances and rarely score more than two. HBA is so inconsistent he can’t be relied on.

Until we sign a really creative midfield player I think we’ll struggle to challenge for top 6 never mind top 4.

  • 39 NUFCarter // Jan 1, 2014 at 6:34 PM

66 points should be the target to match the first half of the season. We lost our first game and drew the second so 33 points is a realistic ambition for the second half as long as our form doesn’t take a turn for the worst from here

All the best with that. heh.

  • 43 bills-son // Jan 1, 2014 at 6:44 PM

    Ancient & tads,

I think you both make good points.

Sissoko is a prime example of a player who sees himself as CAM but managers realise his limitations and play him wide right.

I remember Liverpool signing Ray Kennedy who was an average CF with Arsenal and they turned him into a top class goal scoring CM.

  • 44 theartfuldodger // Jan 1, 2014 at 6:45 PM

With the amount of games being played why not give jonas cisse hba obertan marveaux full games. Our midfield depth is anita and hba. Hba is also counted as a striker.

  • 45 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 1, 2014 at 6:45 PM

    Ancientcoptic
So if that’s all based solely on your opinion then how would that squad rotation change what your suggesting the problem is?
It would still be a squad of players, in positions of experiment, so how’s that different to your complaint?

  • 46 Our Toon // Jan 1, 2014 at 6:46 PM

Sissoko has played 22 games for us and has 1 subs appearance in which he’s managed to score 1 goal and get 4 assists

Shola has had 16 games 6 sub apps with 1 goal and 1 assist

HBA 18 games with 9 sub apps (started half his games) has 3 goals 6 assists (is 2nd in the assists list for us) can’t get a game!!

Coutinho and HBA are similar, HBA is better at beating his man and Coutinho has a better eye for a pass, Coutinho this season 16 games 3 as a sub 2 goals and 3 assists, considering he’s playing in a better team and a team that let’s him attack rather than defend I’d say HBA has a better record where it counts for these 2 players!’

Investment is needed I just hope it’s Carr who has a more telling say rather than pards or JFK

If Rob Lee in his prime was playing with Cabaye and Tiote our midfield would be twice as effective. He could tackle, pass, dribble and made great forward runs and scored goals.

What I said was ”It may be time to start building a team of players that are natural in their positions.”

Is Sissoko realistically our right winger for the next 3/4 years, or are we playing him until it goes wrong?

Is Santon the long term left back, most people including myself seem to believe that Dummett and Haidara have a claim for that spot, being more naturally suited to it.

Is Gouffran our long term Left Winger/Left Forward – can he take on a striker role as part of a forward two… that does not seem to be completely decided upon yet.

Is Remy a CF, or would he thrive more playing of a CF, giving him license to drift wide and roam…

Does Cabaye play more advanced or does he sit deep.

The point I was making, is that for a team that keeps being selected week in/week out – it looks far from the finished article, as far as players playing in positions they are natural too.

  • 58 Big Pappa Cissé // Jan 1, 2014 at 7:00 PM

IMO Marveaux is the closest thing we have to a number 10 but can’t even make the bench .

We still create very little in terms of clear cut chances with Sissoko & Gouffran playing .

For once I would like to see us play :

    —————-Sissoko————–Tiote———————

    ——-HBA————Marveaux————Cabaye——–

    —————————-Remy——————————-

Three real chance creators in behind either Remy or Gouffran .

Our Toon…Coutinho is a flair player so what do you think?

  • 61 Rotonda heights // Jan 1, 2014 at 7:04 PM

I think with the squad we have, we are barely touching what we are capable of. A case of 8th place ( if that’s good enough) has probably been achieved in spite of Pardew not because of him.

It is sad to see attacking and creative players like Ben Arfa, Marveaux, Cisse, plus MYM and Anita etc have their careers destroyed and go backward under such a defensive minded and mediocre coach.

I’m not blaming Pardew for Debuchy but I’m just so sick of how toothless we are in attack and how few chances we create all in the name of hopefully keeping clean sheets and hoping to sneak and hold a single goal lead.

WBA were there for the taking way before Debuchy’s stupidity.

I’m sick of MYM been dropped for Colo, Santon preferred to Haidara and Ameobi preferred to a coffee table!

A smart manager would have rotated and refreshed the team and adapted a far more attacking approach against a poor bottom of the table team.

Mid-table mediocrity for the seasons when we are not going to be in europe or manage to get through the first round of a cup competition would seem to be the height of any realistic achievement now.

I agree we should be looking long term but i think if we shuffled those players in to your suggested positions then we have a lot of talent a) sitting on the bench ie Santon Sissoko Anita, which is a good thing, although a defensive looking bench but then also then need to look at positions there vacating
LB haidara might walk straight in and settle so possible
LM/LW jonas? HBA? RW only really HBA

Just think what your suggesting is going to take a fair bit of investment to bolster the positions that goofy etched would be vacating on top of what we already need

I know the answer but I’m intrigued to get an answer from TADS as well as others who believe HBA shouldn’t be in the team!! TADS believes Coutinho is a better player so I ask him would Pards start Coutinho if he played for us!! He probably wouldn’t start Cristiano Ronaldo because he doesn’t help out defensively (before ppl start I’m not comparing HBA with Ronaldo) creative players are deadwood under pards

For me Anita should play every away game and I haven’t got a clue why we didn’t use the same formation (4-5-1) that got us 6 points at Man U and QPR .

Gob smacked at some of the negative comments on here.
Of course no one wanted a loss and by the sounds of it we didn’t play too well.
But people calling for pardews head again and saying our season is over??!!!
We’re not out of anything, we’re right on the coat tails of the leading pack. There’s a long way to go yet.
Why, everytime we lose is pardew a muppet or puppet or not good enough etc etc?!!!

In January we need a striker a proven winger and a young winger . Are wingers don’t provide any service and haven’t done for years HBA is the only good one and he’s better at cutting in and shooting.

    TADS

I know Simpson was, I would have kept him as a squad player because based on current form he wouldn’t get in ahead of debuchy!! You didn’t answer the question though!!

It’s the manner of the defeat, also changing a winning away formation to accommodate Shola is beyond belief

    Our Toon
That’s because you didn’t actually ask a question
Of course Couthino would get starts, why? Because he’s consistent and a brilliant technical player not a flair player
If Liverfool want benny there more than welcome to swap for him!

people gave up calling for A.P’s head a long time ago once the crazy 8 year contract was handed to him.

I’m tempted to give give up on the season because unless we win the FA cup or somehow impact on ManU, Spurs, Man C, Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton and Liverpool with such a defensive manger it will be same old, same old

With so many games in a few days AP had no notion of rotating despite the evidence in front of him.

What’s the point of beating Manu away when you crumble to an abject team like WBA.

  • 75 Our Toon // Jan 1, 2014 at 7:23 PM

Coutinho is not consistent but is brilliant!! He doesn’t track back and pards has said that players need to track back!! You are also an advocate for wingers tracking back!! Coutinho is very much against what you you believe in!! He wouldn’t get a start here

Man Utd beaten for the 4th time at Old Trafford, they have Chelsea away in their next 2 fixtures as well.

    Moyes is on the ropes.
