Newcastle To Spend £5M On Another Goalkeeper

8:37 am, Sunday, January 5th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 11 Comments

There has been news for at least six months that Newcastle are keen on Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, and we have questioned why Newcastle need another goalkeeper, unless Alan Pardew wants three goalkeepers with Premier League experience at the club, or perhaps the club are getting ready to sell number one goalkeeper Tim Krul.

Alex McCarthy – a Newcastle target?

And there is news today that Newcastle are close to tying up a deal for the 6’4″ England U21 Intentional, who is now 24 years old.

This news first appeared in the summer, when we were also linked with Dutch U21 goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet, and we were even supposed to have bid around £2.5M for the Dutchman in August.

If this news is to be believed, Newcastle will now face competition for the Reading goalkeeper from Everton, but why do we need another goalkeeper?

Maybe if Alex is brought in that frees the club up to finally cash in on Tim Krul, with a number of big clubs said to be interested in the Dutch goalkeeper, and while we don’t expect Tim to leave this month – he could leave in the summer after McCarthy has bedded in at Newcastle. so to speak,

That’s a possibility,  and we know that every player has his price at Newcastle, and the only saving grace is that the price Mike Ashley puts on his players is usually high, and it puts off suitors as it did Arsenal for Yohan Cabaye in August.

Newcastle wanting three experienced goalkeepers, or else we are lining up to sell Tim Krul in the summer, are the only two reasons we can think of , as to why we would need another goalkeeper at the club.

What do you think?

McCarthy is a good goalkeeper but is quite error prone if my memory serves me correct.

If we are selling krul and planning to spend that sort of money, I’d far rather have Forster back.

Please god let the heitinga rumours be false, he’s not what we need at all!!

Nothing wrong with Elliott imo – distribution far better than Krul.

I’ve never seen anything of the young Alnwick either.

This link is hardly a surprise after watching Rob Elliot letting in a shot from 30m and looking lost on set pieces on several occasions yesterday(incl the 1-2 goal).

We need a better understudy to Krul, no doubt.

Have to agree with stavic, thought elliot had a stinker yesterday. First goal looked fairly central and the second he should of claimed/punched it before it reached campbell. Worrying thing is Cardiff were absolutely garbage so what does that makes us?
Given the tickets were cheaper I still felt short changed.

Krul isn’t as good as many think he is.He did have a great game against spurs mind.Saying that you would expect any premier league goalie to save most of those.3 saves were outstanding. His kicking and general distribution is very poor.Eliott isn’t the answer and those goals yesterday were down to him.He always seems to be flapping. So a good keeper is a must, along with a striker or playmaker who can spot Cisse’s runs and pass when he makes his initial run. Many say he’s offside a lot.How about 23 v WBA 3 times offside and 7 fouls commited and not a bad word said about him.Cisse isn’t a bad striker only out of form.If he can get that back great. However under pardwho who has no confidence in the lad that will be hard. Some players need the manager in their corner and helping them.i cant see that in this case.Is it the willie wonga thing or is pardwho just loved up on 23 who he thinks could be a prime minister ffs.
Where’s Marveaux these days. What has he done to pardwho. The little fellow was our top assist player last year and hardly got a game.He made most of Cisse’s goals.Oh and 7 goals given offside for Papiss when he wasn’t doesn’t help with the ones constantly banging on about him being offside. His goal scoring record here is still good.Surely a good coach and not a bus driver could get the best out of him and Marveaux and a few others, under pardwho their going backwards.

The reason we are looking for another keeper is blatantly obvious. Elliott is garbage and couldn’t catch the clap in a Gateshead whorehouse.
he is easily beaten from distance, (against the unwashed last season anyone), his decision making is pathetic, and the defenders in front of him do not trust him. Any new keeper will be to replace him. Of course, having three goalkeepers may then appear to be frivolous to fatty, and may look at Krul as another easy stash in the pocket.

Simple Elliott is not PL class, but there again neither are a fair few other players + manager.

We are avoiding the real issue and that is that we are all been taken for Suckers
