Who Was Newcastle’s Best Player In Controversial 2-0 Loss

4:13 pm, Sunday, January 12th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 23 Comments

In the end the result of 2-0 looked a comfortable win for Manchester City, but it was anything but that, with Newcastle pressing City after the first 20 minutes after Dzeko had put City ahead after only 8 minutes.

Yoan Gouffran in action today

But before half time Cheick Tiote had a wonderful goal disallowed in controversial circumstances, as the referee first gave the goal, and then after consultation with a linesman disallowed it – apparently because Gouffran was offside.

However, he was hardly interfering with the play as the ball rocketed into the net and gave Joe Hart no chance at all.

And this will be the main talking point of the game, as the officials have again made a terrible decision that seems to favor a top club.

Newcastle played very well today, but it’s still our third defeat in a row in the league, and the third time we haven’t been able to score in a Premier League game, , and the third time in a row we have been beaten at St. James’ Park.

Let us know who you think was Newcastle’s Best Player today.

Our backline did a solid job I’d say until that 2nd goal. Not sure what happened there.

Probably could have defended the 1st goal better Willo but Gouffran gave up a lot of space.

    Shame, robbed of an equaliser.
    Still, onwards and upwards.

  • 3 toonthompson // Jan 12, 2014 at 4:16 PM

tiote was immense for me with taylor and willo also playing well

  • 4 kevymartins // Jan 12, 2014 at 4:17 PM

@89 Norcal What happened there was that everyone was pushed up because we were getting beat 1-0 when it should have been 1-1

The team worked hard, yes, but did any one player really stand out? Sissoko had moments, Cabaye, Tiote and Anita too, but everyone was unremarkable today.

We can’t move up the pitch as a unit. what was the last time we say a ball get put across goal from the byline with more than one player attacking? hell, when has it happened at all?

They deserve plaudits for working hard today, that’s it. But they are professional footballers. They still get paid when they do a sh** job. I expect so much more.

Moving on to Pardew, way to correct the mistake at LB 82 minutes into the match. And was it really necessary to bring Cisse on? He’s finished. The sooner he’s gone the better it is for everyone. Waste of a body. Waste of a minute him entering the field. Waste of someone who stood better chance at contributing in Anita.

    Man of the Match:

The fans. they changed the dynamic of the match after the disallowed goal.

So its not looking like a great weekend. Liverpool are 1-0 up, Spurs, Man U, Everton and Southampton all won and worst of all we suffer an unfortunate loss to city

anita is still underrated, the tempo he gives us is irreplacable by anyone else in our team including cabaye

we look so much more fluid with him on
taylor showed today he will do perfectly well as 4th choice cb

we just need WINGERS and a striker if remy is not staying permanently

would be tempted to see hba if an offer came in, he can be great but is too inconsistent for us to depend on him

Yanga-Mbiwa and Taylor got better as the game wore on.
Midfield 3 were good. Tiote man of the match.
Sissoko and Gouffran were a threat.
    Remy unlucky not to score.
Few lucky not to be sent off i.e. Cabaye, Tiote
That Yanga-Mbiwa challenge wasn’t as bad as everyone made out.
Looked shaky at the start and the passing wasn’t quite there but that ‘goal’ turned the whole game around. We played with anger and ferocity and intensity. Feel sickening that this sort of blatant bias still occurs and nobody will ever be able to do anything about it.

Hugely proud of the team today and to quote Pardew, “we was robbed”. They gave it their all after we went down and completely outplayed city in my opinion. We’re clearly lacking something though. I can’t pin down whether its a striker or a winger however.

  • 10 89Norcal // Jan 12, 2014 at 4:19 PM

what’s wrong kevy, don’t like how I criticized our passing?

Excuse me for having high expectations, but I’m sure you would agree City are worthy of it.

there we go liverpool with a lucky goal my piss is boiling now!!

  • 12 toonking // Jan 12, 2014 at 4:20 PM

before you neggers and pardew bashers start with you comments take some time to think about this FACT
our loss today was fully down to that stupid offside decision by the ref because fromk that minute onwards our team was so angered and that means mistakes are more likely.

also when sky sports decide to give tiote the MOTM when he is part of the loosing team that says it all we were the better team and city just sat back the minute they scored a goal.

Haidara looked a class act when he came on, what a future he has.

  • 14 Marty-Toon // Jan 12, 2014 at 4:20 PM

Great game to watch,we played with a lot of spirit ,passion, the ground was rockin and we had City on the back foot for long spells
Very unlucky with the disallowed goal, yet we didn’t give up.
More of the same for the next game please

  • 15 cookiemate // Jan 12, 2014 at 4:20 PM

Anita played real well today, people rarely notice him but he’s ticking away in the middle with crisp, clean and direct passing. Not a foot wrong today could do with being like a foot taller though ;)

  • 16 kevymartins // Jan 12, 2014 at 4:20 PM

We need a lennon type player but will we get one? no

  • 17 89Norcal // Jan 12, 2014 at 4:21 PM

Just realized Mike Jones was the beach ball ref. Apparently he won back his EPL job.

  • 18 ToonDarnSarf // Jan 12, 2014 at 4:23 PM

Anyone being negative should get real. We were playing against a team where most of them cost £20M+ and virtually all of them will be on £100kpw+. We gave a real go against the richest club in the world and should be very proud of the lads.

Some days you get lucky and other days you don’t. We should be happier with the performance today than the win against Spurs. That day it was Krul who won the game for us. If we could play every game at today’s level then we’d be pushing the top 4.

  • 19 ToonDarnSarf // Jan 12, 2014 at 4:25 PM

I don’t think we were the better team, I think it was about equal. On some days we lose those games, others we win. That’s football.

Some people are only happy if we get the result AND we put in a great performance. If they were a Man City fan, they’d be upset about their win today because they were matched by ‘lowly’ Newcastle?

  • 20 JP...from The Rock // Jan 12, 2014 at 4:27 PM

    Tiote or Willo M.O.M.

We were the better team in the second half and they were the better in the first. That dodgy decision cost us the game. Robbed!

We deserved at least a point after that second half performance.

  • 21 geordiemark // Jan 12, 2014 at 4:31 PM

well by no means man city were 2 goals better then us today, I thought all the players played well fair enough was taylors fault for the goal but he played well like the rest of the players

when you play a team full of millionares plus the officals its a bit hard to win a game I do think that michael jones is on the take just for disallowing our goal alone hes a disaster

  • 22 geordiemark // Jan 12, 2014 at 4:34 PM

ive gone with tiote today thought he had a great game just very very unlucky with his perfectly good goal chaulked off by a dodgy back hander offical

  • 23 Crawfordladd17 // Jan 12, 2014 at 4:35 PM

ToonDarnSarf but no way on God’s earth we will play like that every game we aren’t Everton, that’s it. Are Everton better than us? No Krul, Tiote, Cabaye, Remy(Lukuku overrated), Colo, Gourffan and possibly Debuchy would get into there team. Can of like how Tottenham fans felt over the last fews years, are Arsenal better than us? No
