    BandB

Did they have to wait until after they retired until they “came out” as open ginggas? Much like Mr hitzelsperger has done recently (although with the much less important issue of his sexuality)?

  • 2 G // Jan 15, 2014 at 4:15 PM

Didn’t somebody else just post that video on the last thread?

  • 3 Spoof // Jan 15, 2014 at 4:15 PM

Big trouble at Southampton, have a read of this.

    repost:

isnt it unfair to HBA to have the manager tell him, “ok, we need a goal”, and its the 80th minute? seems to me thats a reason he tends to look for an opportunity, and not look to distribute as much….

  • 5 Markaccus // Jan 15, 2014 at 4:17 PM

This is amazing! Go for it, Gutz. Nutter.

  • 6 G // Jan 15, 2014 at 4:18 PM

Mind, Jonas singing still sounds much better than both Hoddle / Waddle in Diamond Lights, and far superior to Kevin Keegan in Falling in Love. Don’t even get me started on Paul Gascoigne’s Fog On The Tyne.

I’m just waiting for the “sack Pardew and get Pochettino in” bandwagon to start?

    Sack Pochew! Get in Pardettino!

  • 10 Pizzicato The Arizona Geordie // Jan 15, 2014 at 4:21 PM

Considering what Moyes has done to a more healthy transfer funding pool and a way much bigger squad, you guys should be satisfied with Pardew actually.

  • 11 mattyNUFC // Jan 15, 2014 at 4:21 PM

as far as fantasy picks go, i’d take either of these two: both19/20, both play regularly for standard liege. we’ve been linked to both in the past. I think Michy is the one touted to be the next ‘superstar’ (he’s built like Drogba) but both are highly rated

that was a few threads back and don’t be so presumptuous, it was a civil debate

  • 15 catchy in norway // Jan 15, 2014 at 4:24 PM

    I know

    duurrrr

why don’t we sack pardew and get him???

  • 16 GeordieAnt // Jan 15, 2014 at 4:25 PM

Jonas had to leave because he is a terrible singer? Damn…MA is getting strict…Barton was forced out for speaking the truth about the regime…Jonas…because he can’t hold a note.

Of course…I say that all in jest. For all he lost his legs, Jonas bled black and white, and gave everything he possibly could. I for one liked him as a player because of that passion, was he frustrating? Yes, but he also showed us and other players what it was to fight for a cause, and to love the club you play for rather than the money.

  • 17 Spoof // Jan 15, 2014 at 4:26 PM

    matty

sorry m8, but it is par for the cause at times, as I am sure you will agree.

So you set Pardew a target and if he fails to hit it then you sack him. You can hardly sack a man when you tell him top 10 minimum and we’re currently in 8th!

we play better football and are higher up in the league, so how is that taking us backwards

  • 23 mattyNUFC // Jan 15, 2014 at 4:34 PM

    catchy

i think you’re wrong about jonas being shipped out because of his comments last year

someone had mentioned that there was a clause activated that after a certain amount of appearances he’d been entitled to a pre-determined contract. i’d believe that with this regime over any other reason

  • 24 catchy in norway // Jan 15, 2014 at 4:36 PM

spoof you are kidding me right?

    do we play football?

  • 25 catchy in norway // Jan 15, 2014 at 4:40 PM

    Matty

I find that very strange, if he had not got injuries in the first game he would still he in the team now

if there was something in his contract about the amount of games , I don’t think he would have started the first game

  • 26 Spoof // Jan 15, 2014 at 4:41 PM

    catchy

yes we do, we keep the ball down and we pass and move, some teams who have better players might do it better than us but yes we do play football.

  • 27 ToonDarnSarf // Jan 15, 2014 at 4:41 PM

    catchy

Backwards? Don’t be ridiculous. CH was sacked because the owner felt he wasn’t ready for the PL. Then he had to drop down a division to Birmingham? and then he is back in the PL with a yo-yo club like Norwich. Kind of backs up the decision doesn’t it???

You can’t use last season to prove that Pardew is useless unless I can use the previous season to prove that he’s amazing.

  • 28 Spoof // Jan 15, 2014 at 4:43 PM

TDS…TS posted a great article yesterday I think you should read!

…like I have said before when it comes to the fundamental of football it is just s case of clash of cultures in here!

I setup football much just like the Dutch do and actually at times think what I see here in England is anti-football!

  • 31 mattyNUFC // Jan 15, 2014 at 4:45 PM

    TDS

if the owner honestly felt CH wasn’t ready for the prem, why not replace him in the summer. both you and catchy’s arguments don’t really hold up.

to me at least it’s apparent AP got the job based on connections, and he’d been sounded out for some time. he sure as hell didn’t get here on merit.

i remember all the folks saying Martinez would flop at everton. sure, still a long ways to go for him, but his class has been apparent since day one.

  • 33 pottsclock // Jan 15, 2014 at 4:47 PM

Jonas is simply leaving to play more first team football. The reason he wasn’t getting first team football with us is because he is not good enough. He was widely criticised on this blog last year for his poor performances – mostly loss of pace and inability to beat the opponent and poor crossing. Pardew was also widely slagged off here for playing him, many called him a Pardew “favourite”.
He remained, however, a very hard working player.

Can’t people simply accept that there is no conspiracy in this case?

  • 34 piers18 // Jan 15, 2014 at 4:47 PM

Roman Eremenko is class …http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCtJpirqlgk… Yes please

  • 35 MosesNUFC // Jan 15, 2014 at 4:48 PM

Catchy, we played great football against sunderland which we unlucky to loose, we played great football against Villa, Man United, Chelsea etc. Under Hughton, we played nowhere near as good football as pardew plays us, but what we did have under hughton, was a set of players that bled black and white (barton, nolan, carroll, jonas, simpson) and that is why we smashed sunderland 5-1. Now we have a set of quality players who sadly just don’t put as much effort in for derbies. After 2 derby losses, they should now know what it really means to geordies

  • 36 ToonDarnSarf // Jan 15, 2014 at 4:50 PM

You can slag off the style of English football compared to Dutch football as much as you like. But coming on a NUFC blog and bitching about the style of our football (in the English PL) is a bit like me coming to Holland and always complaining about the number of cyclists…

conspiracy theories are more fun for them, just let them get on with it, what you say is very true, but will they allow the truth to hide a good conspiracy lol

  • 38 mattyNUFC // Jan 15, 2014 at 4:51 PM

    moses

    again, comparing apples to oranges

look at the squad CH had at his disposal. some will argue over the likes of barton, nolan, and carroll but all had clear limitations. simpson over debs? jonas over hba? shola over remy? santon over r taylor? come on….

now look at our current squad.

  • 39 ToonDarnSarf // Jan 15, 2014 at 4:51 PM

    mattyNUFC

Because he gave him a chance first and didn’t like what he saw.

So what if he got a job through connections. You don’t think the guy at Saints did? Football is about connections! And people want to work with people that they trust.

  • 40 ToonDarnSarf // Jan 15, 2014 at 4:53 PM

    mattyNUFC

When is suits people, out squad has gone backwards because Ashley has failed in his transfer policy…and when it suits people Pardew has failed because we’re only in 8th with a superior squad.

I get that football is about opinions but how can people be quite so varied in their opinions?!

  • 41 GeordieTwo // Jan 15, 2014 at 4:55 PM

Looking at our coming games it would be very prudent to take at least 7 points from the next 3 matches. If we don’t get at least that I will be very disappointed. We have West Ham (a), Norwich (a) and the mackems (h). Getting 7 of 9 would take us to 40 points and keep us around 7th or 8th. After that we have Chelsea and Spurs. Even a draw against either Norwich or the unwashed would be too horrible to contemplate.

  • 42 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 15, 2014 at 4:55 PM

TDS…I just call it as I see it whether you like it or not!

Pardew inherited the Hughton squad and has been forced to wheel and deal, we now have the squad which we do at a cost of -£15m, and you critisize the manager, oh come on…….., assembling the squad is part of the manager’s job, these players which we now have don’t just miraculously appear.

I’d say it’s also clear that the PL in general is more competitive and has better players in it. Clubs have spent 10s of millions improving their squads.

So we have a better squad – but mostly so does the opposition. Really difficult to compare.

  • 55 mattyNUFC // Jan 15, 2014 at 5:02 PM

    spoof

he’s been forced to wheel and deal? all the players who’ve left, let’s say major players, carroll, barton, nolan, all rested on the decision of DL and MA. these players that came in are mainly down to GC. Pardews buys? Obertan and Eliot. He also wanted Tomkins. Even if GC isn’t infallible, thank god for him because we’d be about on par with a norwhich or fulham if AP had free reign

  • 56 Novocastrian66 // Jan 15, 2014 at 5:02 PM

Graham Carr is a scout, nothing more than that, all clubs have scouts and its up to their manager to make the most of what the scout brings to him, you cannot seriously be suggesting that we have improved solely because of our scout, lets be sensible, all a scout does is watch and then make recommendations to the manager, this is Pardew’s squad which he assembled at a figure of -£15m from the one which he took charge of, why cannot people just accept that ?, its as blatentely true as you will ever get.

  • 63 Transfer Sage // Jan 15, 2014 at 5:12 PM

    TDS

That’s the problem, it’s not just league position why I dislike pardew. It’s his conservative approach I think costs more points than it wins. Can’t prove it as we can’t play each game twice with a different style just my view.

  • 64 pottsclock // Jan 15, 2014 at 5:18 PM

Actually I quite enjoy seeing the trauma that some of the bottom clubs are going through and the state of them. Most are just not “teams”
    - Morrison talking about leaving WH when they’re struggling, splashing big money on one player who gets injured and no back up
    - Ruiz at Fulham, who we were after, leaving when the club are in the brown stuff. Berbatov with no fight
    - Cardiff and Hull owners stuff
    - Sunderland being called Sunderland (poor sods) and Di Canio and players getting booked or sent off

  • 65 Spoof // Jan 15, 2014 at 5:19 PM

    TS

don’t take this as criticism of Kevin Keegan, but if KK had had a bit of Alan Pardew’s conservatism, would Man U have won the league in “that” year, is Pardew more conservative than George Graham or Jose Mourinho ?

  • 66 GeordieTwo // Jan 15, 2014 at 5:19 PM

Personally I think Pards has manliness issues. I see no evidence of Manly Man Inc. products there. :(

  • 67 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Jan 15, 2014 at 5:21 PM

I don’t know how many of you believe in bogey clubs, managers, grounds – but we have three coming up.
West ham – sam Alladyce – toon have never beaten one of his teams since he was sacked from the TOON
Norwich – have not won at Carrow Road for many a season.
Mackems – Gus Poyet has the Indian sign over us never beaten him when manager and when playing for Chelski always scored against us.

So would be a good time to lay the bogey starting on Saturday

  • 68 GeordieTwo // Jan 15, 2014 at 5:21 PM

Yes it’s really a lovely sight you wild pottserino you. Cardiff’s owner will probably take them in the same direction that Venky’s have at Blackburn.

It’s a distinct possibility G @70. I see no evidence of decent chest hair. And apparently he’s been giving Cabs a lookover in the showers. He found that messing about with players’ wives was dangerous business so he’s had a dramatic lifestyle makeover. Just kiddin like.

  • 82 Spoof // Jan 15, 2014 at 5:38 PM

    G

I’m not surprised to see Debs as he has been really good for a good while, but I was surprised to see Mbiwa, the thing is, playing devils advocate, does this make them good defenders or bad, in fairness I posted this to have a go at Colo who I have always disliked, but it could be argued that Colo is not on the list because he reads the game better and has no need to make those heroic last gap challenges, I realise that I am fighting against myself here, but it would be interesting to see how others view this, is it a sign of a good defender or a poor defender?

  • 83 Tsunki // Jan 15, 2014 at 5:39 PM

  • 86 G // Jan 15, 2014 at 5:42 PM

Colo was very good, for a couple of years. If we ignore his first fairly disastrous season, and this season, they it has to be argued that he was our best defender. Currently though, I prefer to see Willo and Yanga (Who I didn’t rate at all at first, but my hasn’t he learned) in the centre. I think overall spoof we may have to agree to disagree overall, however, currently your opinions are very valid.

don’t bother m8, I was saying exactly the same myself last week, your hitting your head against a brick wall, the view is that Pardew is hopeless so we should replace him with someone who has spent more but is still below us in the table, and if we do that then that will be progress ?, go figure it !

Spoof tbf you did try and qualify it I will give you that, I don’t mind opinions, it’s what the blog is for, it just looked like another anti-player rant. For instance, I am tired of Santon and Sissoko is starting to wear me out but it would be unfair of me to just moan without giving reasons why (which I have done a few times :) ) toonbrother dies that and it does me heed in.

Previous crusades against the likes of Willo have certainly shown some the error of posting without knowledge.

  • 110 Transfer Sage // Jan 15, 2014 at 6:09 PM

    Spoof

Regards to Keegan yes it may have helped if he was more cautious at times, but then again his attacking game allowed us to get to where we were. I think you need the balance and neither Keegan or pardew had it right exactly…but given the choice I’d rather see us drop points playing the keegan way that drop points the pardew way. Just what I prefer to see

    1949

Southampton have a miles better academy, that’s the only point that can’t be argued at all.

With regards to the manager I think he is better than pardew and gets a lot out of his players and mainly plays to their style which I don’t feel pardew does enough.

Southampton transfers business whether the manager, chairman whoever decided has been poor really, a lot of money wasted so we buy better.

If we had a talented attackin manager like him to work within our structure that would be ideal as I see it.

Not saying pardew is a Bad manager or the devil as some do, just feel he doesn’t have the style to match the players the club seem to buy.

  • 129 Spoof // Jan 15, 2014 at 6:36 PM

    Tsunki

so basically you though I was a gob shyte without any substance, don’t worry about it m8, my wife calls me much worse on a regular basis ? and no that is not tongue in cheek, its the truth ?

But back to Colo, going through his Newcastle career this is how I genuinely see it, for most his first season was a mare, I actually had some sympathy for him and even after we went down I refused to rule him out, the reason was that Saylor and Bassong appeared to be doing ok when they played, but Saylor is right sided and Bassong left sided and they always played on their preferred side, and it does make a massive difference, remember John Terry being asked to play on the right side against Germany, yes Lampard scored a great goal but Terry was murdered throughout the entire game, Colo is actually right sided but when we went down he was shoved from one side to the other, he never had a chance to settle, I did sympathise with him.
In the Championship he was always on the left his wrong side but he grew into it and got accustomed to it, but it was a man’s team in a boys league, he was too good for it.
Back in the man’s league after a season or two he was still getting raved by the fans even though he was not as good as he was the previous season, I could not understand it, I saw Gabby Agbonlahor, a Villa lightweight out-muscle him, Clint Dempsey who is at the very best the quickest of an incredibly slow bunch out sprint Colo for two different teams, and one of the biggest bug bearers I have of him is his cowardice, remember, I will never forget it, the last game of the season, 3-0 up v West Brom, it ends in a draw, Pardew gets slaughtered for it, bollocks it was Colo who started the rot on that day, he constantly backs away and turns his back, he done it then only to be sold a dummy which was converted, yes these mistakes happen to all, and mentioning 2 or 3 over a long career would be wrong, but it is not 2 or 3 it is many and many which for whatever reason Mike Williamson and others have had to take the blame for, in a nutshell, he is slow, can’t head a ball, gets out-muscled too easily, and does not put his body on the line, with these deficiencies is it a surprise that he cannot defend.

  • 130 GeordieTwo // Jan 15, 2014 at 6:38 PM

Saylor has the heart of a lion, he is good in the air, in full flow he is quite quick, but when it matters most which is reaction time he is way off the pace, I would put him ahead of Colo and Willo for that matter, but is he a top 4 defender, no, I don’t think he is, for me Mbiwa, although he will never dominate in the air is quick, brave, agile and the only really good cb we have, but I do feel that Mbiwa must have a dominant man mountain alongside him to flourish.

with me liking classical music I can appreciate your liking of heavy rock, as both types of music have got to be played loudly, classical music needs volume to pronounce the musical artistry of the composer, whereas heavy rock has to be played loudly to hide the musical artistry of the composer heh heheh heh, sorry m8 that was a joke.

  • 197 Tsunki // Jan 15, 2014 at 8:46 PM

Sorry Spoof bug no pro in their right mind would back you up on that image of Colo you are projecting, I am not sure if you get to many games but on the pitch he has had many good days and the last couple of seaons having him missing was a real drag, especially as Willo was ‘championship quality at best ‘etc., and Mbiwa was just not getting the hang of it. Bills is right to say you don’t get to be in a PL season team, oh and as recently as December Pl team without fellow pros recognising your ability. He may be 2nd choice for the Argentina manager but that still makes him a decent cb in anyone’s book. You are letting your focus slip into inventing imaginary faults and trying to rewrite his history. Every defender has been done by just such players you mention, it’s like counting all the goals Krul has conceded to prove he is virtually invisible. Oh, wait, is he rubbish too? :)

Funnily enough I did get the message that you’re anti-Ashley.

The way I see it is that we targeted top 10 as a minimum this season and we’re currently in 8th. I think we should finish 8th and I think bottom half means we need a new manager.

I expect us to strengthen for next season and top 8 should be the minimum target. Then the following season I expect us to target the top 6.

Forget cups, this isn’t championship manager. No club in the PL targets a certain round of a cup unless it’s the CL or it’s actually simply “win 1/2/3/4 trophies”.

Forget what happened when we got relegated, we can only deal with where we are now. And where we are is in our 4th season since being promoted again. Do you really think it’s realistic for us to have caught up the top 6 and be challenging them at this stage?

  • 200 Tsunki // Jan 15, 2014 at 8:53 PM

I wonder if Mr Moyes is going to forget cups? Unless they have a radical turnaround they ain’t going to get into CL never mind win the league.

  • 201 ToonDarnSarf // Jan 15, 2014 at 8:54 PM

    JfA

By the way…my point about transfers is proven by players like Ruiz and Gervinho. It seems we were in for them but had an upper limit that we would pay for them (transfer fee and wages etc.) At the point the package stops being a good deal, we walk away. That sounds good to me. If we’d got Gervinho for £5M on £30kpw then maybe it would have been worth it. He could have chipped in with a few goals and if he didn’t work out, we could have shipped him out.

But the club has proven itself as unwilling to take big risks in the transfer market, unlike under FFS who did it regularly.

Saying that…once we have signed a few players in key positions (striker to replace Shola asap, defender to replace Colo before summer, young right back, attacking midfielder/winger to replace Jonas), then I’d like to see us be willing to take the odd gamble on a young player. Signing the next Bale/Ronaldo/Walcott would be fantastic even if we could also end up with a Ruiz/Jeffers/Bramble…

  • 202 Krul To Be Kind // Jan 15, 2014 at 8:55 PM

  • 203 ToonDarnSarf // Jan 15, 2014 at 8:55 PM

    Tsunki

Like I say, there’s no way that Moyes will target the QF or SF of cups. He will want to target to win a trophy (any trophy) asap. It will put the fans at ease and improve the atmosphere, plus he’ll want to ensure they get into Europe. Although of course even Europa League for them would be a failure.

  • 207 Jail for Ashley // Jan 15, 2014 at 9:05 PM

    TDsarf,
As always you miss the point or avoid to put across your own one track opinion, what I’m saying is that the majority would be happy about us being in eigth if they were showing signs of wanting to go up a notch but they’re not and are you saying that being completely inflexible on 500K means not being able to get rid of a dud. And what Champ manager got to do with an FA cup run.

  • 208 ToonDarnSarf // Jan 15, 2014 at 9:12 PM

    JfA

By point about the FA Cup run is that no manager gets targeted to get to a certain round of the cup! I haven’t played those games for several years (about 6 or 7) but I recall that you were targeted to reach the certain round of a cup. Really, if you’re in the PL, the money for the cup run isn’t much so it’s either win the damn thing or it doesn’t matter. I know it’s different for the fans because we want to see success but it’s actually probably better for the club as a whole for us to be out now rather than losing finalists. Of course, we still want to get to the final because you never know what can happen…

You can’t tell how we want to go up a notch because that’s next season. Wait to see what the targets are next season. If it’s just top 10 again then I’m 100% with you.

  • 209 Spoof // Jan 15, 2014 at 9:13 PM

I have had a season ticket since the 80′s bonny lad, that’s a lot of games, I gave it up for this season due to disallusionment with Ashley, this season we can see Colo is poor, we saw the same in his first season, inbetween he had a good season whilst in the Championship the rest is down to hype and false reputation, as I have asked on numerous occasions mention when Colo has done really well as a defender, Man U this season he was great, too little too late, so come Mr Know it all, you keep on implying I’m not in the right mind so why not prove it, so many games Colo has played for us, name 3 where his outstanding defensive duties saved the day for us, god luck matey. Yes thats all I ask, 3, and I dare bet you fail, but if you don’t fail you will struggle like hell to find them.

  • 210 G // Jan 15, 2014 at 9:13 PM

@205, I think it’s because of all the snipping on here, that the blog seems to be missing so many of its old regulars. I don’t really have any issues with anybody on here, so I hope the old crowd if they are listening come back and enjoy the debate, but leave the aggression and hatred elsewhere. I’m not saying I’m blameless on this front, I have had many well documented disagreements in the past with a few people, however, these days I’m reformed. I would much rather listen to somebody’s views rather than just berate them.

  • 211 Jail for Ashley // Jan 15, 2014 at 9:16 PM

Spoof it would be pathetic to chase down your obvious prejudice of the guy by recounting all the games he has played well in, what would if achieve as you are unshakeable in your error? As it is I don’t need to, I think Bills and I already did that by mentioning his peer recognition which is worth infinitely more than your patronising and petty challenge which is designed to supply you with more contradictory waffle on how he wasn’t as good as most other people saw. If you stand back and look at your vision of Colo and contrast it with what the majority of fans, and crucially the professional critique of his peers and managers, you will have to say with honesty that it’s just your vision.

BTW, I similarly gave up my ST this year but because I just couldn’t afford it, otherwise I would still be going Ashley, Championship of whatever. Just saying so you know I have seen a few games as well.

    TDS and JFA

I think pardew made a good point on the FA cup this year. He said although he played a strong team (from everyone fit it was remy and willo who missed out only, not too bad…although remy is our main goal threat so should play really) but the problem came from the fact we have fielded weaker sides the past 2 years and lost to a championship team each time.

If the last couple years we have done ok and this year we played this team and lost nobody would accuse us of ‘throwing the round’ or not taking it seriously.

I think this time the team selection was ok, it was more that we just played a terrible, containing game.

Went to the game on Sunday, think I’ve just about got over the disappointment now, how that goal wasn’t given is beyond me! Thought all in all though it was a really good effort by the lads. Only gripe is maybe the subs were made too late (especially HBA), no time to get into the game as by that point the timewasting from city and panicking from us had begun.

Personally can’t see much happening on the transfer front, obviously we need a striker but anyone else think Holtby would be a good signing? Looked good whenever I’ve seen him, young and doesn’t appear to be in favour of Sherwood….

This idea of being sustainable ought to be considered more deeply.

Isn’t it from the owners perspective, simply concerned with increasing the value of his asset, reducing the debt payable to himself, while also providing free advertising to his core businesses.

Isn’t that essentially what it’s all about, meaning that from a fans perspective, the only real pro is that we are less likely to go broke, if that was ever a real concern.

  • 271 lesh // Jan 15, 2014 at 10:56 PM

Then again, investing in the infrastructure of the club and in so doing increasing the net worth of the club will have potential flow through benefits to the first teams performance. I suppose both are far from mutually exclusive in theory, albeit a very long term plan and low on potential short term success.

Sensible Newcastle, being mined by the owner.

Man City slot in a nonchalant 5 to brush aside Blackeye Rovers in the Cup.

I see the season gradually developing into a two horse race, the other being Chelsea, who are astonishingly well placed for a side that apparently hasn’t yet hit its straps by some margin and have a masterful tactician pulling the strings.

  • 275 ToonDarnSarf // Jan 16, 2014 at 12:05 AM

    On the FA Cup.

I think we did take it seriously. But we know that every club will rest a player in the cups who is tired or who has taken a knock so they are fresh for the league. It’s not as if we put a youth team out!

We were a little unlucky with the draw. If we’d got to the QF before playing a really big team, then maybe we could have justified putting out the big guns but I can understand not doing that early on.

And yes, reaching the final and losing may be exciting for the fans up until that point but adding extra games means extra injuries and suspensions, so affects the availability of players for league games. How many clubs have been relegated (or nearly relegated) and won a cup recently?

So the club is focussed on the league. I would imagine (and hope) until such point as we get to the QF of a cup.

  • 276 jimmysmith // Jan 16, 2014 at 12:21 AM

Newcastle haven’t won a trophy of any significance in 45 years, so putting out a weakened side in the early stages of domestic cup games and being subsequently bundled out, would seem a bit of a slap in the face to diehard fans, who might understandably be dismayed.

Even so, I’d prefer to see us competing at the top end of the premiership now than going on a cup run, if I had to reluctantly choose between the two, such have the domestic cups been devalued since Sky invented football.

I suppose the rivalries played out at the top end of the EPL rub shoulders with the final stages of the Champions League, Euros and the World Cup nowadays.

Slap in the face to the fans for sure, but it’s the face of the modern PL Pointless blaming our owner for our club doing what every single club in the PL is doing.

It’s one of those stupid things that people keep bringing up to slag off MA rather than focus on the real things that are wrong with our club.

If they genuinely want clubs to focus on the cups more, they need to think of a way to incentivise them to do so and campaign against the FA!

  • 278 jimmysmith // Jan 16, 2014 at 1:40 AM

I think that it basically stinks that community based football clubs are owned by individuals. I think that is the nub of the issue.

I feel as if our best hope lies in a consortium of well to do Geordies with a genuine interest in giving back, with financial support from regional government and a provision for everyday fans to buy into the club financially and have a say in the running of it.

Something other than a single owner, or PLC or even the Barca model, which although laudable, is seemingly unattainable on Tyneside.

    Is such a proposition possible?

  • 279 YankToonFan // Jan 16, 2014 at 1:47 AM

Go get Tom Ince, Lewis Holtby (loan), and Konstantinos Mitroglou.

    Sell Cisse, Obertan, and Gosling.

  • 280 YankToonFan // Jan 16, 2014 at 2:01 AM

Or sneak in for Ravel Morrison instead of Holtby.

  • 281 KevinHann // Jan 16, 2014 at 3:10 AM

Folks how would you feel about Nicola Cortese to Newcastle? Do you think he matches Mike Ashley blueprint while also representing a better chance to keep the fans satisfied?

  • 282 Ben3arfa // Jan 16, 2014 at 4:47 AM

    Kevin

No, because Cortese has a very strong personality, and is the type of football chairman who likes to spend money. Definitely not Ashley’s type of man to run his thrift shop aka. NUFC.

  • 283 KevinHann // Jan 16, 2014 at 5:32 AM

    Ben3arfa

He’s also working pretty well on self-sustainability though, see what a good mix Southampton have with academy products. We also spend on first team players (even if it appears limited or bargain) so if he can work with our scouting system and accept the need to sell one big star every now and then to support the spending I don’t see any reason not to cope with this blueprint. His strong personality is a different issue although it all depends on how his relations with Ashley work out in the beginning. Ashley is quite tolerant once the specialist breaks into his inner circle (Kinnear, Llambias, etc, even Pardew can be used as an example to an extent).

  • 284 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 16, 2014 at 7:32 AM

In both competitions in the last 10 years only two cup winners have got relegated
Your justification is simply ridiculous, as for the draw not being kind and not drawing a big team until the QF i wasn’t aware Cardiff were a big team

As for every team doing it, no no there not the bottom 6 clubs who are in a massive relegation battle understandably have, but were not in a relegation battle, were floating mid table with no pressure to look below or above us
As for resting tired players, well that’s on Pardew, we’ve had 2 or 3 lads that should of been rotated through the Xmas schedule

  • 285 catchy in norway // Jan 16, 2014 at 7:46 AM

    ToonDarnSarf and jimmysmith

it was more than a slap in the face, no going through in the FA cup, the club (mainly pardew) really kicked the fans in the teeth by fielding the team he did

we have more chance of winning A cup than the league, we were sitting on 30 points, so im sure we would be in the EPL next season, so there was no reason for him to worry about relegation fights

without the cup our season is now dead, nothing at all to play for, pardew or Ashley don’t want Europe , so fighting for a fifth place finish is not on the cards

yes , I know winning the cup gets you into Europe, but at least it is in the history books , Newcastle UTD 2014 league or FA cup winners,

Cardiff should have been an easy game at home, made a little bit more difficult because of a new manager, but even so, we should have been to strong for them,

also whats the point in only trying to beat teams in the top 6, when we struggle against teams in the bottom 6, ?

    the man makes me sick

I think that post is spot on. Last season with our league position it was annoying to see us rest players but you could see there was some logic behind it…but as you say this season we are 10 points clear of 10th and 6/8 points away from 7th, safe in our position, so perfect time to gamble for a cup.

Even sunderland have been playing their strongest team in cups to try and give themselves some momentum and get that winning feeling .

I think our cup team was ok (injuries/bans stopped colo, cabaye, krul and debuchy) so only willo and remy out….but really Remy should have played as he is our major goal threat, then to just give him 5 minutes at the end was poor.

I don’t think pardew is as bad as you say, i don’t think he is good enough or suited to our squad though.

I think it’s odd for a club to employ a manager like pardew then ignore the type of player he wants and just buy small, technical lads.

It’s like the club doesn’t have a plan.

  • 289 Transfer Sage // Jan 16, 2014 at 7:52 AM

just for people who say most fans like ashley

    http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/big-toon-survey-newcastle-united-6508496

The chronicle shows 80% people happy with pardew and 47% want Ashley gone…so pretty much 50/50 on Ashley.

  • 290 catchy in norway // Jan 16, 2014 at 7:56 AM

    Transfer Sage

    it has a 5 year plan ;)

I think he is as bad if not worse :(

he might not have the players he wants or is used to, but he know his players abilities,

fielding a weak team (7 changes) suggests he new what he was doing,

also, remy sub in the cup, HBA sub v man c and many other games, all take place in the last 5 mins,,

    simply to late,,

when was the last time that tactic worked ?

how often does the free kick to Williamson work ?

he still continues with them sort of things though

  • 291 KevinHann // Jan 16, 2014 at 7:56 AM

    Transfer Sage

That’s still far from the majority of fans wanting Ashley out though. The general sentiment of this blog is 95% want Ashley out and at least 80% are anti-Pardew.

oh i know, just thats a poll of 1200 fans (1000 people is what apparently representative of millions according to studies so that’s ok)….just thinks it’s the most accurate view of it.

    Catchy

I hate the free kicks to willo…the only goals we have i remember are a corner remy heads in and a freekick gouffran headed in, neither involved willo.

I don’t believe anything that paper says,,

if that were true, there is a huge difference between this blogs views and the chronicles

im not saying everybody wants pardew gone like me,, but I know there are a lot more on here would be very happy if he did go,

from what I read in hear there only a select few that are keen to keep him,

    even you must see that

I genuinely think it’s pretty mixed on here, would have thought closer to 50/50, if anything more want him to stay than go.

But it’s a good number of fans asked, so it seems pretty reasonable to me.

Musical tastes: post punk, alternative, some indie, phsycobilly, etc etc

Must be quiet on the news front, Ed hadn’t even put an article up by 7:30 !

Think Prem title will eventually end up between citeh and chelski so really hope citeh win it if only because they are actually worth watching – Chelsea are dreadful to watch once they’ve gone in front and mourinhos tactics are bssucakky to squeeze the life out of the game when they’re ahead. Fair enough, its certainly a winning tactic but just crap to watch – these are the exact tactics pard’s is trying to implement although sometimes he switches it and trys to squeeze the life out the game first …. Don’t think he means to its just his dementia kicking in with him being a ffffin old cuuurrnntt like

Aye think that’s probably a fair representative of where fans stand

Personally i think it’s hard to judge Pardew, he has shown he can get the team playing well but he has some howlers as well but i also sympathise with him on the side that when ever he says we need x, y and z the club say no we don’t
There doesn’t seem to be much harmony with senior figures of the club imo

In the 50/50 ash out thing i also think that’s fair but would like to see the vote as how many think he’s doing it right and how many think he’s needs to do a lot more

Chronicle have a agenda – to get Ashley out – reason they are miffed that he does not speak to them or any of the staff or players.

Also rumour in Northern Echo that TOON are in talks to swap De- Jong for Cisse

  • 298 bills-son // Jan 16, 2014 at 8:19 AM

Wih the Chronicle survey showing 80% of fans happy with Pardew and 53% not vociferous in wanting Ashley out one thing it proves is that the views on this blog aren’t representative of the average fan.

I also note the Chronicle only published views from anti-Ashley fans not pro. %

  • 299 Transfer Sage // Jan 16, 2014 at 8:21 AM

i remember the phone in two years ago he did at the end of the 5th placed season and he said he wanted a big CF and a big CB…neither of them have arrived still, so clearly don’t back him with that.

Why can’t they either get the players he wants (or at least the style he wants) or just hire a bloke who’s best suited to the players we have.

Pardew does an OK job with the lads, it’s not horrendous but needs to take them up a level to get more from them, which he seems reluctant to do, although as you say he has done it at times, just not enough.

  • 300 Jail for Ashley // Jan 16, 2014 at 8:23 AM

47% want him gone and 27% aren’t sure, wait till this window is over. If that media group wanted him out they could go into overdrive.

I don’t know one fan that thinks pardew is the right man for the job ( real life not in here)

I know fans who say they don’t want to keep changing manager , because it looks bad , or we need some stability

which I think is a lame excuse , teams in Europe change managers regular, with damage at all

  • 302 martoon // Jan 16, 2014 at 8:33 AM

I’m not surprised by the Chronicle poll at all. I’ve said many times on here that most people you speak to at the match think Pardew is OK. It’s only on here that the most vociferous posters are anti-Pardew if Ed did a poll on Pardew I think a lot of you would be surprised at the results.

  • 303 bills-son // Jan 16, 2014 at 8:33 AM

    Catchy,

The Chronicle talked to 1200 fans, you are ignoring the facts just because you disagree with the average fans view on Pardew.

  • 304 Jail for Ashley // Jan 16, 2014 at 8:34 AM

    Bills,
Remember last year when we ‘debated’ that the five signings were ambition or desperation, well I read the programme notes at the game on Sunday and from the horses mouth it said we bought them five for obvious reasons, do you think that obvious reason was to push for that top six ?

  • 305 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 16, 2014 at 8:35 AM

    Sage
I think you’ve hit the nail on the head there
Some of the players we have bought simply don’t fit Pardews style of play
    Cisse is a prime example
And the fact he has stated he wanted Llana for me shows the type of player he wants instead of your HBA’s/Marveux’s
Now seeing as we don’t have Llana but HBA/Marveux is it easier to keep shuffling the squad with transfers or change the Management and coaching team to one with different philosophies?

Pardew and the board are a like for like representative of what we saw on the pitch last season, contrasting styles that don’t work together trying to be forced to work together
