There is some news today that Newcastle are interested in 23 year-old Vitesse defender Kelvin Leerdam, who can play at right back or anywhere across the back line, and also can play as a defensive midfielder.
Kelvin Leerdam – Vitesse defender/utility player
Vitesse founded in 1892 – same year as a very famous English club
So this lad could be a useful addition to Newcastle’s squad, and he has played 19 times for the Dutch U21 side.
Tottenham were interested in the player last year, and there was even talk of an exchange deal involving Jake Livermore, but Jake went to Hull City on a one year loan deal.
The youngster joined Feyenoord back in 2005, and made his debut in November of 2008, when he was just 18 years old, and he ended up playing 113 times with four goals for Feyenoord before joining Vitesse last summer.
In fact a pre-contract deal was agreed with Vitesse last January for the player, and he joined the club in the summer on a three-year deal.
And Kelvin has been in great form this season and in 20 appearances for Vitesse has scored seven goals, and has already attracted other Premier League clubs – including Everton – who were said to be close to a deal for him last year.
And he’s been so good that he was names right back in the Eredivise team of the season so far – and it’s interesting that Newcastle target Alfred Finnbogason of Heerenveen has been named as one of the forwards – here’s the team.
This is what they say about Kelvin:
“Leerdam, who is also capable of playing in midfield has been excellent since signing from Feyenoord in the summer, helping Vitesse in their title charge. For a defender Leerdam has a knack of scoring goals, and has netted seven so far.”
Newcastle need versatile players who can play in many different positions, and we have a couple at the moment ion Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, who has played in every position across the back-line.
Vurnon Anita is also versatile (and good), although the Dutchman has rarely been played by Alan Pardew other than in central midfield, although he spent one season as the Ajax left back.
It’s not clear how much Leerdam would cost, put according to reports in Holland he has been in terrific form for Vitesse this season.
And of course if Newcastle are really interested, there’s no reason why we cannot sign him on a pre-contract agreement in January, and then complete the deal in the summer.
