Newcastle Linked With In-Form Vitesse Defender

There is some news today that Newcastle are interested in 23 year-old Vitesse defender Kelvin Leerdam, who can play at right back or anywhere across the back line, and also can play as a defensive midfielder.

Kelvin Leerdam

Kelvin Leerdam – Vitesse defender/utility player
Vitesse founded in 1892 – same year as a very famous English club

So this lad could be a useful addition to Newcastle’s squad, and he has played 19 times for the Dutch U21 side.

Tottenham were interested in the player last year, and there was even talk of an exchange deal involving Jake Livermore, but Jake went to Hull City on a one year loan deal.

The youngster joined Feyenoord back in 2005, and made his debut in November of 2008, when he was just 18 years old, and he ended up playing 113 times with four goals for Feyenoord before joining Vitesse last summer.

In fact a pre-contract deal was agreed with Vitesse last January for the player, and he joined the club in the summer on a three-year deal.

And Kelvin has been in great form this season and in 20 appearances for Vitesse has scored seven goals, and has already attracted other Premier League clubs – including Everton – who were said to be close to a deal for him last year.

And he’s been so good that he was names right back in the Eredivise team of the season so far – and it’s interesting that Newcastle target Alfred Finnbogason of Heerenveen has been named as one of the forwards – here’s the team.

This is what they say about Kelvin:

“Leerdam, who is also capable of playing in midfield has been excellent since signing from Feyenoord in the summer, helping Vitesse in their title charge. For a defender Leerdam has a knack of scoring goals, and has netted seven so far.”

Newcastle need versatile players who can play in many different positions, and we have a couple at the moment ion Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, who has played in every position across the back-line.

Vurnon Anita is also versatile (and good), although the Dutchman  has rarely been played by Alan Pardew other than in central midfield, although he spent one season as the Ajax left back.

It’s not clear how much Leerdam would cost, put according to reports in Holland he has been in terrific form for Vitesse this season.

And of course if Newcastle are really interested, there’s no reason why we cannot sign him on a pre-contract agreement in January, and then complete the deal in the summer.

    TS…so it’s based on fear?

…does it make more valid then? Why should I believe it? 🙂

I need a little bit more than that mate!

not so much fear as why would ashley, after appointing a list of duds suddenly appoint better.

I still would like a change, but i’m not confident if would be change for the better with Ashley

wolfs…I not really that concerned 🙂

…Ashley just wants to get involved at an minimum – as long as Pardew makes sure of that Ashley won’t care (if the other should happen he will remove Pardew I am sure of that especially after last season)

I don’t see no reason why he wouldn’t appoint a better manager the next time around! For me people saying that is just people stating a subjective opinion. I don’t really know what to do with that?

Tevez has an attitude problem but so does Mancini, Tevez didn’t score for 13 games at west ham under Pardew and played LW, worst goalless streak of his career, yes a troublemaker but why do attacking players suffer under Percy?

TS…I know Ashley is an idiot and knows absolutely nothing about football but come on mate… 🙂

…why would he hire someone who is going to give him more work when that’s the exact opposite of what he wants???

What team would you pick for West Ham game mate?

    Krul

    Santon, willo, MYM, Haidara

    Anita, Tiote

    HBA, Cabaye, Remy

    Cisse

    Would you have anything different?

Looks like Chelsea will snap up Kurt Zouma. Bad news for us. We will need 3 centre backs in the summer.

i would leave out haidara and have MYM at LB with Tayls in the centre other than that the team looks perfect. Silly thing is we will line up with a “physicl side” shola – sissoko – taylor- gouff just to combat the fact west ham have a couple of target men and diame

Is there any source for Newcastle actually being linked with this player during the current transfer window?

This blog seems to be filling with posts titled “Newcastle linked with from ” but most of the time I can’t find any information regarding any communication between the two teams about a negotiation actually getting underway.

Is this all just speculation? Does the term “linked” mean that a fan of NUFC would like to see the said player involved with a transfer to the club? Is there any truth behind these player links what so ever?

I honestly think there are going to be no new signings for Newcastle during this window and all these posts reporting links are bogus and are just here to keep the readers entertained…

Our Toon..can I run the tactics as well? because I don’t think there is any point in me picking a technical forward thinking 4-3-3 when Pardew will just turn it into a defensive 4-5-1, where the wide men have more defensive obligations than forward 🙂

…but I would probably drop both Sissoko and Remy for the WHam game. I agree Benny should geven a chance and not just for the WHam game but for five games minimum (as long as he perform of course)

Yeah we need someone to run over the tactics Percy will have us defensively set up but with west ham having so many defensive issue I say let’s attack them

Can’t argue with MYM at left back in place of Haidara with Saylor central!!

Think when buying from holland its better to buy from players that have graduated the ajax academy! Its much less common for players to leave holland without playing for ajax or feyenoord (another great academy) to go on and be a success ! Ajax seems to set their players up for life in better leagues!
Thst said, i would prefer Sighortsson to finbogasson, i would prefer Victor Fischer to any player in holland and I wouldn’t buy any defender currently in the eriedivisie!

Our Toon…the best football I have seen Pardew having play is when we have us attacking and pressing high up (leaving Benny to do what he do best), so I know he can do it 😉

…but his inconsistency is rubbing off on our players sadly 🙁

The rich just want to get richer! Ashley buying all these brands and now with the Rangers thing etc. it just seems to put us down on the priority list.

I don’t see him interested in the club as a normal fan would be. It’s just a side hobby for him it seems. It’s so infuriating for us loyal fans that pour our heart out for the club on a daily basis.

You never know with Ashley, he hasn’t hired one modern/attacking manager in his time here. The only one who is attacking was keegan and he soon got rid of him.

I just think we are more likely to sign a similar manager to what he has always signed.

On West Ham: It’s just typical that our ex-Newcastle player Andy Carroll is back fit to play against us after being out all season!

I hope he plays awful like the last time we met.

Also NO WAY in hell should Strolla Ameobi start ahead of Cisse who was a goal machine once. If it’s down to confidence issues that he ain’t performing imagine how awful he must feel when he sees the lethargic and 1 goal in 50 ratio of Ameobi start ahead of him.

I would be gutted and demand a transfer if I was him.

David O’leary is personal friends with Ashley and was worryingly short odds with the bookies when pardew took over and when kinnear took over!
One thing Ashley has proved, he won’t buy a working manager out of his contract, he only goes for unemployed

TS…no put I am actually quite sure he would never again hire someone who would pile extra work load on him 🙂

…Pardew is not doing that at the moment!

The lesson here is Ashley should never own a football club in the first place, but if he is in it for the money wouldn’t he just want the biggest return possible with as little work done as possible 😉

you’d have thought that would be the case…hire a better manager to get more from less players. a good manager is cheaper than 3/4 good players.

But he hasn’t done it yet so i doubt he’d do it in the future, i have no idea what he will do with us.
