We often wonder why Newcastle have not gone after Lyon striker Bafe Gomis in January – because if he was good enough six months ago for Newcastle to bid around £9M, and he has scored 13 goals in 22 appearances for his club this season – and is now worth probably around £3M with his five-year contract ending in the summer – how come Newcastle have lost interest?
Bafe Gomis – Turkish club in for French striker
And there’s news today that top Turkish side Besiktas are now interested in signing the 28 year-old French International striker this month.
Newcastle agreed both a fee with Lyon and wages with the player last summer, but the deal collapsed, and that was because his agents were asking exorbitant fees for the deal to be completed – sounds a little like blackmail to us.
The news today is in Mercato365 that Besiktas are planning to offer him a deal this month, and if the fee offered is acceptable, we know that Lyon are keen to get something for their man this month.
The two Welsh clubs Swansea and Cardiff had been interested in the player as well, although with manager Malky Mackay having been replaced by Ole Gunnar Solskjær, we’re not sure if the Bluebirds (can we call them that now that their strips are red?) y are still interested in the player.
As we said, we’re not sure why Newcastle seem to have lost interest in the striker.
Any ideas?
Comments welcome.
Note: Danny Gordon has had a fantastic response to his survey over the last day or two, and wants to thank you for helping him out – he’s in his final year of Mechanical Engineering degree at Northumbria University, and we wish him the very best.

Comment #1I’m not overly bothered on Gomis, modest record but if he is our target then we should start to move.

I don’t care how they work it on the continent, but if your trying to tell me that all continental coaches have to bring more cash in from player sales than what they spend on new recruits then sorry m8, I just will not believe that to be the case, just to make sure your aware of my views, that is the only bug bear which I have with Ashley, this bring them in at a younger age where they will improve for me is a good plan as they are hungrier and you would expect a big effort from them, but its solely the lack of support which gets my goat, whether its Pardew, Carr or Kinnear who is suffering from the restraints, I don’t really care, all I know is that Pardew is the manager and he is generally getting decent results with what he has at his disposal.

Our Toon,
I don’t like Pards character or his managing ability and want him out, but I don’t spend my time slating him and even stick up for him from time to time as he’s the best we’ll get under Mashley, Pardew was brought in to do as he was told and finish as high as he could under the strict financial restraints Mikey imposes without qualifying for Europe, when he finished fifth with a threadbare squad Mashley knew he’d hit the jackpot and gave him an eight year contract knowing that if Pardew could finish fifth with minimal investment then he could surely finish tenth for the next eight years on a shoestring budget, however Mikey punished him for his high finish and pushed his policy to the limits by investing virtually nothing that infamous summer and nearly got us relegated, Pardew is seemingly ok with this arrangement and therefore isn’t going anywhere.

On the continent managers make do with players that a director of football buys not players the manager buys, you keep referring to more cash than players bought in, take Carroll out of that occasion and we break even mate!! With what he has at his disposal Percy is performing on par but we could be better placed under a more technical and tactically astute manager

If he punished him for finishing 5th with no signings is it safe to assume that he rewarded him in Jan for fighting relegation with 4 or 5 new signings? I know Percy is the best we will get under mashley because who else will do the job for £500k a year
What does annoy me is that Percy said in his 1st interview that if we need a player I will bang down Ashley’s door until I get what I want!! Well that clearly isn’t happening!!

Why was he given an eight year contract if Mashley was planning on an up and coming young manager with bright ideas, Pardew = mid table security, Mashley= £££

Comment #10All this blabber of a new manager will be better, I tell you this- THE GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE.
On the whole I believe in Pardew, and still, although less, still have faith in his ability.
I firmly put the blame on Ashley for NOT PROVIDING the players to create a fully functional and balanced squad.
Give us proper wingers and strikers and perhaps a creative centre midfield player and we’ll be laughing our way into the top 6 to top 4 regularly!
Until then I will sympathies with Pardew as he is doing the best with what we’ve got, most of the time.

so taking everything into consideration then surely it must be Ashley who is the one which we should be trying to get rid, this anti-Pardew stance by some for me is immaterial as the next manager would have the same problem and then after a while they would be wanting the new manager out, its a vicious circle, and for those who say Pardew should do better with what he has, sorry but that is simply just wrong, we are ran on a shoestring, clubs who are ran as such do not normally break into the top 4, people mention Everton who are in a similar position, yes I accept that, but just because one club is doing a bit better than what we are doesn’t really justify Pardew getting sacked does it, there is only one club who is doing a little bit better but there are a host who are worse off, lets be fair about this, I am speaking the truth because if you take Everton out of the equation then all your left with is clubs who expect a top 4 finish, is it really fair to expect that of Pardew under the restrictions which are in place, I don’t think it is.

you cannot take AC out of the equation as he was sold and Pardew was under the impression that the cash would be re-invested, you cannot just leave aspects out when they are relevant

Comment #15J4A…because Ashley is an idiot and because he thought he had hit the jackpot with Pardew (he thought the FA would come after him)
…he seems to think alot but it all mounts up to the fact that he knows nothing about football so now we are stuck both Ashley and Pardew)
…you know if you don’t believe then add Kinnear to the equation 😉

You were saying yesterday when has Percy ever had the backing of any chairman in his career, I’m pretty sure Egbert Johansson at west ham backed him to the hilt….bought in Mashcherano and Tevez for £30m or something daft like that, yet that very season he got knocked out of the EL and almost got west ham relegated (Alan Curbishley saved them) Tevez didn’t score for 13 games playing LW for his work rate and Carlton Cole preferred upfront!! Reo Coker was keeping Mascherano out of the team!! Says all you need to know about Percy
I hear he’s the best we can get under this regime, yes probably is but does that mean we should be happy about it!! We all know the issue is MA and this is the first season in 15 years where I’ve not renewed my season ticket, I will not endorse this regime (MA, JFK and Percy) Spoof the only issue is that I can’t do anything by myself alone, I feel I’m supporting my team because this regime is killing us

Comment #20On Gomis I agree Ed it is an odd one. Ver bizarre especially when we a fed quotes from the board that we’ll go for good players if the price is right.
As mentioned 9M was a good price in our club’s eyes only 6 months ago and now that his price is half that we are suddenly not interested?? WTF is going on with this club, seriously?
I see Gomis as a huge improvement to Strolla Ameobi, but not our answer to our goal scoring problem. Maybe that’s the reason? Or perhaps we have another, younger and more prolific striker lined up for a transfer but we all know that is close to non-existent for this club and owner.

Comment #21Spoof that’s the same AC that Percy told us he wouldn’t be selling? Every time he gets in front of the camera he lies….apparently we are always in control of the game and then we concede, someone should tell Percy being 1-0 up doesn’t mean your controlling the game but being 2 or 3 up means you are!!

Comment #22I’m not sure we should be looking at Pochettino or Laudrup if I’m honest, one can’t be ar5ed to learn english and the other thinks he’s lined up for Real Madrid job ( bit like Fat Sam )
Statistically on Prem statistics both are worse than Pards albeit its extremely close, guess this just points to the fact that they are all pretty much average managers
Laudrup: 47 Games: 36.17 win percentage
Pochettino: 34 Games: 35.29 win percentage
Pardew: 134 Games: 36.95 win percentage

I hate the idea of pardew having any say in transfers, the guy has no clue what he is looking for,
based on fact with what he has worked with and where he plays players,
not sure who said it a couple of threads back, but they said he is doing ok at managing both the owner and players,
well , Ashley is just peeing all over him, he just sits and says thank you, please do it again
and on managing the players, try asking the kids or marv , anita , HBA , BA , Cisse, Colo, raylor
he has been fantastic for
obertan, shola, perch, willamson

Mashcherano and Tevez went to West Ham without a fee attached to them, as for Pardew’s time there his buying to selling was approx £1m, not sure if that £1m was more sold than spent or vice versa, but either way it’s hardly phenominal backing.
At the end of the day we finish by agreeing with each other, we both want a new owner, where we disagree is you view that we would improve by getting rid of Pardew now, I can’t see that happening as there is only Everton who we could hope to better, but there are many who could better us, which is why I believe that Pardew is doing well.

You’re not really making yourself look to clever there, it’s fairly common knowledge that Pochietto speaks reasonable English but chooses not two and unlike Fat Sam, I don’t think Laudrup has gone public with his intentions of managing Real or Barca, but having played at both he’ll know quite a bit about the role.

Which manager can’t be bothered to learn English? Both speak English very well, I hope you learn the language of wherever it is you go holiday, or do you speak English?
The statistics you have given for Percy are for us only, where’s Charlton and west ham stats? His win percentage isn’t great with the first 11 available to him compared to the other 2

Comment #32I think although we haven’t spent fortunes on trophy players as we have in the past, it’s not really true to say pardew hasn’t been backed when Jonas and Marveaux weren’t / aren’t even making the bench and MYM, Anita, Ben Arfa and Cisse all struggle for starts .
We have made plenty of extremely shrewd buys.
