With just thirteen days left in the January transfer window, Newcastle fans are hoping the club can get one or maybe two players through the door before February rolls around.
Mathieu Debuchy – joined just over a year ago
Last year at this time we were playing Reading at home and after the terrible 2-1 loss, Mike Ashley brought in four Frenchmen, Moussa Sissoko, Yoan Gouffran, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Massadio Haidara, and Mathieu Debuchy had already joined earlier in the month, and we won our next two games at Aston Villa and at home to Chelsea.
Those five Frenchmen are all playing well for Newcastle now, but they took time to adjust to the demands of the Premier League.
Alan is still hopeful of some player(s) coming through the door in the next couple of weeks, as he had this to say in the Shields Gazette today:
“Joe’s in charge of that department with Graham and Mike, and as the manager, I’m hoping that I get a player or maybe two to bed in, really.”
“Whether they would make a big impact on the first team this season, I’m not so sure, because it’s a funny time to come in. “That first six months for Vurnon Anita was tough, I thought.”
“We’ve seen the benefit of it now.” “We’ve had a lot more discussions this week, as there’s been a lot more movement in the market.”
“It sounds like clubs are going to make some moves. We need to be on our toes in terms of clubs coming for our players, or us going for them.” “The market’s moving. We need to be on our toes.”
Joe Kinnear is currently said to be in Germany trying to arrange a loan deal with Borussia Monchengladbach for 23 year-old Dutch International Luuk de Jong.
So we probably shouldn’t expect too much from any new players coming in during January, although Papiss Cisse made a huge impact when he first arrived two years ago, with a fantastic 13 goals in his first 14 games at Newcastle.
Wonder if Luuk de Jong can do that – if we can get him in on loan of course.
But a caution – since that first season, Papiss Cisse has played another 65 times for Newcastle, and scored only 16 goals.

Comment #84This is my whole point.
We are roughly on the same amount of points as Soton.
Neither we or them are going to threaten the top 5, but Soton play some great stuff to watch and if you’re not going to win anything the next best thing is to at least enjoy what you’re watching.

Comment #90Will trust the cabella stuff when its done. Till then its just rumours. We have heard lots of them debuchy gomis etc. We have 2 strong links this winter. Cabella is one and is being played on. Expect something on De Jong too.

Comment #91Honestly don’t believe it’ll happen, Newcastle United paying 15 mill?
Can anybody say he warrants this price tag as well? He’s young and has time to improve I suppose.
Additionally, where will he play? Packed in CM, we don’t really play CAM’s and Pardew doesn’t look like he’ll drop the wingers any time soon.
Hope we get him regardless.

Comment #92Anyone else thought the reason cisse may not be scoring is because weve not played the same style of football pardew magically forgot when we went unbeaten and finished fith? we had:
Ba-cisse-benny
—-cabaye—-
guti——–tiote
So why not go back to this system swapping remy for ba and sissoko/anita in for guti? I firmly believe cisse hasn’t scored because in all of the games hes played since, hes either been on the right wing to accommodate ba, a lone man infront of a 5 man midfield, where he’s strayed offside and looked lost because we never have any players in the box let alone the ball, or when weve played 4-4-2 which in my opinion weve looked poor as a team. Also find it interesting that Cisse has never seemed to be able to form a strike partnership, he was playing a lot of those games with ba in a 4-4-2 which clearly never worked, as ba was too greedy amd wanted to be the main man, whereas cisse thrives on chances, but hes always looked poor when playing with a partner up front. So this has had me thinking, to get cisse back to form do we need to play with 3 men up the top, and I don’t mean coming back to cover the fullbacks as wingers, as this is the DM job I mean up the top, attacking, like ba and arfa used to, use ba as the outlet out wide for cabayes long pass, knock to arfa, pass, cisse, boom!
I think the reason for all this is because its almost like playing 4-3-2, leaving cisse to roam around and find an opportunity and space in the box to score, he doesn’t need to take it past a player, put it to him in space he can hit it first time, I think this defensive winger and team system is whats holding him back truthfully, were trying to involve him too much in the game and expecting him to create chances, were also sitting back to much as a team and we get nooone into attacking positions, why cisse looks lost, and also why arfa runs the ball into dead ends, because theres simply no one there that’s lost there man and available for the pass, itd be interesting to hear anyones thoughts?

Comment #93Ok its €15mil. I dont what the current pounds-monopoly money exchange is, but it still seems too high.

Comment #94Yeah thats the next question. Where does he play ? Our CM is packed and we need wingers or strikers. Is cabella the hardworking type who tracks back. Thats the kind of players Pardew wants on the wing.

Comment #95The flaw in this story for me is where the sentence “Newcastle are willing to pay whatever it takes” comes in. Ashley does not pay whatever it takes for anything. When he has the won a shirt on and he is holding a Balti Pie then I will start to believe it.

Comment #96No surpise there is the negative Newcastle fans, always crying. I bet you lot are the ones that “rate” Hughton higher and Hughton is a good CHAMPIONSHIP Manager.

Comment #97Boys -we need to be careful about the Remy Cabella -story. Might be true -but his agent, his dad Hector Cabella has got “form” in this respect. He recently suggested Remy was going to join OM. So no applause for JFK just yet.

Would love us to get him and De Jong with a young winger would be a pretty quality window

Comment #102Cabella in, bedding in until next season, Cabaye sold in the summer. Cabaye will be nackered after the world cup, so all round a smart move and a good profit (assuming Cabs goes for 20 mil, and Cabella (Cabs II?) in for 12 mil.

Comment #103Williamson is Bramble in disguise
I generally go along with what you are saying and definitely support the idea that the DM pair should be covering the WBs, rather than the wingers. This allows them to concentrate more so on attack, crossing in balls and trying to get in behind.
I differ from you slightly when you suggest Cisse can’t play in an two man attack. and needs to be in a three. When he first joined and scored all those goals, I think it was with Ba in a 442 and HBA on the wing. The following season Pardew was attempting to change things around and asked on of Ba/Cisse to play on the wing, which niether were happy with, then one up front. Which Cisse is not happy with and his form consistently dropped throughout the season.
In addition at the beginning of this season Pardew started with Cisse in the middle of three forwards, everything happened around him and he was unable to regain form. I am sure he would be happiest in a 442 playing closely with a strike partner and as he actually belongs to us I suspect he will be played today with Shola.

Comment #104Markus basically even fan on here, they just say Pardew is crap, bad, awful. Like wise up 8th is pretty decent. And lots of Newcastle fans say “Why did we sack Hughton?” because he is a Championship manager
