Newcastle Target Europa League – Good News Bad News

10:01 am, Wednesday, January 22nd, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 142 Comments

The stand-in Newcastle captain Cheick Tiote is having  a very good season, and Cheick is in Abu Dhabi with the rest of the squad, and we suppose they are expected back on Tyneside at the end of the week.

Cheick Tiote – we can make Europa League

Newcastle will then play at Norwich City next Tuesday night and then we play Sunderland at home, and we’;re hoping we can even get two wins out of those games.

This is what Tiote said in the local press today:

“At the moment we are in a good position.” “We are happy because last year it was not the same.” “Now we can try to win every game.”

“If we keep trying that we can gain a Europa League place or even a Champions League place.” “It is going to be tough because there are a lot of good teams in this league.”

“What happened against Man City was disappointing but we did not give up.” “We did not get that goal but that is football.”

“The referee was the only one on the pitch who thought it was not a goal.” “Since then we have focused on the pitch.”

“We had lost four games, but winning against West Ham was massive to win the game.” “Everybody is focused.” “We are doing the right things again. Everybody is happy.”

“Before the Hammers game we were talking together.” “We said we had to come back in the right way. We will try to win every game.

“Everybody is focused and at West Ham we saw that it made the difference.”

Newcastle must try to get maximum points out of the next two game before we are away at Stamford Bridge, and there cannot be too much hope of getting anything out of that game.

Although two years ago we came away with that 2-0 win in the third last game of the season, with two great goals from Papiss Cisse that ensured we would finish about the Blues in the league.

Newcastle were even pushing for a top four spot, but we lost our last two games at home to Manchester City and away at Everton.

Being in the Europa League is good news and bad news – good news because we are back n Europe – bad news because the extra games could again hurt us in the Premier League.

Comments welcome.

    Sage from previous
Agree on manure as it stands wouldn’t take there defence or midfield, well maybe carrick
But would defo have De Gea, he’s a much better all round keeper where beyond shot stopping Krul hasn’t improved, he’s dominant enough in commanding his area and his distribution is awful and never looks comfortable when the ball gets played back to him

Like I said great shot stopper, but for me De Gea is the better all round keeper, for me he’s the same as Santon, there are the two squad places I feel for the money we’d get we could get an equal or better replacement

  • 2 Toon1978 // Jan 22, 2014 at 10:05 AM

Couple of players would be nice to help us along.

  • 3 ~Anita One Bites The Dust~ // Jan 22, 2014 at 10:05 AM

The thing with Haidara is… for one reason or another… he always seems to draw in a hard and potentially injury inflicting tackle… it’s as if the BPL has it in for him…

THe amount of dangerous tackles he has been in, compared to the amount of games he has started is phenomenal.

    tads

fair enough, i’ll agree with degea, he has improved massively during his time there.

with carrick yes and no, i think he is good but would come in for anita (not as defensive or offensive as tiote and cabaye respectively) and i like anita, so not fussed.

I think everton are in a difficult place too, they have a lot of talent but key players lukaku and barry are on loan. It’s good for them this year as loans are better than nothing but can they match that next year? who knows.

    Tequila

    Don’t get me wrong.

    That side also had Obertan.

Yes we did keep those clean sheets but he was like sore thumb

He did score 2 good goals against Mackems and Toffees.

But as LB he was poor

Slank…Yes, but it depends on how you see football!

…from my stand point I just disagree with TS and you among others as it stands right now ;)

REPOST DUE TO ED’S ANNOYING MULTI POSTING PHILOSOPHY

IMO the full backs only leave holes when we play 4-4-2 and HBA exposed Debuchy too many times earlier on in the year because HBA’s defensive work is not what it should be.

Someone higher up in this string mentioned santon flies up the wing like he’s playing for barcelona leaving gaps behind but barcelona don’t play 4-4-2…they play 5 in the middle so if one full back flies up the wing then the remaining midfield 4 all move across to cover the supposed gap.

This however is beyond comprehension for Pardew and it frustrates the hell out of me he can’t find a way to accommodate one of the most talented players in the Premiership in our team.

Flying full backs can be accommodated in any team if the coach knows how to set up the team. We’re all moaning about santon and debuchy leaving holes behind them but it’s easily solved…just watch the teams with decent coaches and they all do the same thing with a five man midfield.

If the only cover for Debuchy in a 4-4-2 system is HBA then yes you’re asking for trouble, if the cover for Debuchy is HBA or a n other midfielder then I don’t see the problem.

Gouffy is better cover for Santon than HBA is for Debuchy in a 4-4-2 but why should we be reigning in the runs of Santon and Debuchy simply because Pardew chooses to play an outdated system.

This is all down to coaching…every successful team of the last decade plays the same system and it ain’t 4-4-2.

The only reason HBA is not in our team terrorising defences all over the country is because Pardew is a dinosaur.

Santon is a good player and we’ll miss him if he goes for sure. He’ll simply be replaced by another full back who won’t be allowed to attack just in case he leaves a hole.

    PATHETIC

  • 11 tequilamag // Jan 22, 2014 at 10:19 AM

    repost for Sparky
Man C play 442 most of the time and Man U won the title last year playing 442

HD One day I will actually read a post from you that is not slagging off on of our players or the manager.

  • 12 Geordie1 // Jan 22, 2014 at 10:19 AM

Doesn’t matter which player currently playing for the TOON wanting Europe it won’t happen because Fatty doesn’t want European footy as he has already stated he is happy with top 10 finish providing we don’t qualify for the Europa League, no cups because of the latter the man is a TOOL and until we are rid of this leach we will always be in the same position talking about the same thing season upon season if only he had some AMBITION OR DESIRE to fullfil the TOONS potential we could then make wor dreams turn to reality.

    ASHLEY OUT!!!!!

  • 13 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 22, 2014 at 10:19 AM

    On Europa
We heard nothing but complaints from the club about the fact it was physically draining on the squad and the financial rewards weren’t great so what’s changed?
Having said that we played a squad that generally had 5-6 changes from the league squad and still made a QF so perhaps with the new ruling about the winners qualifying for CL clubs are taking the comp more seriously?

  • 14 sparky55 // Jan 22, 2014 at 10:21 AM

I never slag off any of our players…just our inept manager.

By the way MAN U playing 4-4-2 is erroneous to say the least.

  • 15 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 22, 2014 at 10:23 AM

    Sparky
As tequila mentioned City play a version of 442 and utd won the league with a version of 442
    Also
“The only reason HBA is not in our team terrorising defences all over the country is because Pardew is a dinosaur.”

Sorry don’t buy this at all, for me there is something going on with HBA, requesting a leave of absence whilst the rest of the squad is on a training camp to improve conditioning is strange especially when he is supposed to be busting a gut to get into the team

  • 16 tequilamag // Jan 22, 2014 at 10:24 AM

Sparky that slagging of comment was for HD.
Fergie played 442 most of the time.
Man City pair Aguero and Negredo when fit.

  • 17 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 22, 2014 at 10:32 AM

TS…so who Will you win the midfield and have more Players in and around the box if you want a flat four at the back?

…they are not at much use then going forward there neither are two midfielder sitting deep behind Cabs if you want him there!

For me this is how the trouble starts. See Sparky’s post back on the last thread. Makes very much sense I think :)

  • 18 sparky55 // Jan 22, 2014 at 10:33 AM

it’s not 4-4-2…it’s a 4-4-1-1 with rooney dropping deep with both full backs given license to maraud up the wings and everyone in the team knowing what to do when they do so.

you play a rigid 4-4-2 with flying fullbacks then you’re asking for trouble

  • 19 Transfer Sage // Jan 22, 2014 at 10:34 AM

    tads

225mil apparently. Messi is reported to always be talking to zabeleta, aguero and toure about life at man city, the club, the fans, etc etc.

Barca are also planning a huge redevelopment of the nou camp, so would welcome the money.

City have former barca technical directors in so can imagine they are using all the influence and connections they have.

FFP or not i’d love the lad in the prem league. And if they spread the payments over 5 years only need to account for 45mil year

  • 20 SharpEnough23 // Jan 22, 2014 at 10:34 AM

anything about Messi in media today?

  • 22 Diggedydaws // Jan 22, 2014 at 10:44 AM

    Sparky,

What about inter when they win the champions league with 2 flying full backs?

If you have the players to suit the system, then it’s the right system.

Takes a good manager to get that tho…and of course ergo the right players!

  • 23 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 22, 2014 at 10:44 AM

    *who =how

  • 24 Rotonda heights // Jan 22, 2014 at 10:49 AM

Maybe ” having a very good season ” is pushing it a tad. Certainly better than finishing 16th though.

Would not miss Santon at all. Just don’t get the hype one little bit.

I guess we can’t part ex Marveaux and Obertan with a French club as presumably both earn way more here even if not selected.

So Zouma, Salah and Cabella now not happening and a non-scoring Dutch striker is the only possibility. Way to go JFK

  • 25 Diggedydaws // Jan 22, 2014 at 10:49 AM

And Jesper, I will say again as I did on previous post, u know bugger all about football so i’d probs stop with the tactical insights chief!

  • 26 jayphoto // Jan 22, 2014 at 10:50 AM

Always hoped to see messi in the premier league! Actually think Ronaldo is the better player and performing in the premiership would confirm messi as possibly the greatest of all time! Needs to perform in a world cup too but he’ll never have a better chance to do this than this summer

  • 27 sparky55 // Jan 22, 2014 at 10:51 AM

    @22

I love flying full backs…but as you say the rest of team need to know their job as soon as one or both them fly forward.

I’d personally love to see a 5-4-1 formation with flying full backs now and again and the remaining back four move across when required.

All variations on a theme that would keep the opposition guessing but everyone who plays newcastle know what they’ll up against…never any surprises up Pardews sleeve.

  • 28 Ben3arfa // Jan 22, 2014 at 10:51 AM

Bakambu would be a good buy for the €3 million Euros thats is being mooted.

  • 33 JP...from The Rock // Jan 22, 2014 at 10:59 AM

Santon is only 23? I thought he was 26. That’s good news lol He still has time to adapt his game and learn that if you run forward then you have to run back to your position and defend! That is my main concern with Davide. That and the fact that he relies too heavily on his right foot to put crosses in always cutting back and losing our attacking momentum.

  • 34 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 22, 2014 at 10:59 AM

  • 39 Transfer Sage // Jan 22, 2014 at 11:09 AM

    jesper

I would say anita and tiote win the physcial battle in midfield, cabaye also can help but from further up the pitch, pressing their defence or deeper midfielder.

I just think midfielders generally have more quality on the ball than defenders so would rather have them playing higher up attacking than covering for full backs.

  • 40 jayphoto // Jan 22, 2014 at 11:09 AM

Never seen Bakambu play! Rarely watch Sochaux play as they are rarely chosen for TV! Their players tend to create big reputations that aren’t always justified though, maiga, boudebouz examples of this! Think corchia may go that way too! Maybe its easier to play there as theres no pressure! Like the manager though, hes pretty suarve

  • 41 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 22, 2014 at 11:11 AM

Sammy ameobi has been putting a few pics up etc, sounds like hard training through the day then they’ve been doing go karting and stuff at night

  • 42 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 22, 2014 at 11:16 AM

TS…I love att. fullbacks, but the system needs to be right of course :)

I would say if Pardew doesn’t want att. fullbacks he shouldn’t buy ‘em lol…and he should change the system/pattern to fit them!

…or else he is just asking for trouble (in my opinion)

Tads…that does sounds like a team-building trip mate. I don’t know why Benny asked to a leave of absense. He got it, so I’ll assume there is a reason. Time will tell maybe ;)

  • 43 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 22, 2014 at 11:18 AM

Does anybody know if you can check what IP people are writing from in anyway?

  • 44 Transfer Sage // Jan 22, 2014 at 11:20 AM

    jesp

what i think we have with debuchy, unsure on santon, is a fullback who can attack when needed but also defend and do a very good job defensively.

I’d have only one of them attack at a time, the other hold their position with the 2 CB’s…this allows the fullback to support the attack but also midfielders to get involved in the attack

  • 45 jayphoto // Jan 22, 2014 at 11:21 AM

No mystery to me! Benny is all about himself! Always has been! Hed rather score a wonder goal and lose 5-1 than win 1-0 as a team and not get the plaudits!
Hes clashed every other manager hes ever had because of this, aswell as alot of senior team mates at marseille and lyon! Pardew seems to just smile and bench him though whereas previous managers at other clubs have actively forced him out!
What i do know from a couple my clients is that benny gets away with dressingroom/ training ground tantrums and breaking club rules far more than any other player as they walk on egg shells to keep him happy and try to utilise the unbelievable talent he obviously has

  • 46 jayphoto // Jan 22, 2014 at 11:27 AM

@jesper – think Ed can see what IP people write from though itd probably be a few different ones from different people! I myself tend to use my phone and post on my commutes, but occasionally from home or at the various studios i work at!

  • 48 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 22, 2014 at 11:28 AM

TS…only one fullback should att. at a time…definitely mate :)

Personally Debuchy reminds me alot of Santon…just a bit more experienced! Santon just seem to get the sticks these days. I remember when we bought Debuchy, oh my god the abuse he got from time to time!

Alot like the same things we slate Santon for :)

I have said it before the reason why our wide men either babysit the fullbacks or our fullbacks don’t get back in time is due to our midfield.

Last season I slated our midfield fore or bad season and I still think they are a fault. Get the midfield straight and their responsibilities and I don’t think we will be having this discussion again!

…well that’s my take on the situation ;)

  • 49 Slank // Jan 22, 2014 at 11:31 AM

    Bad luck @ 31

How about Saudi Prince Abdullah bin Mosaad Al Saud who bought a holding in Sheffield United for £1 ( yes one quid ) and said to quote ‘promising substantial new capital with the aim to bring the Blades to the Premiership as quickly as possible unquote.

Now that is ambition but if he doubles his stake to two quid I somehow think that might not be enough as they are effectively in the relegation zone of league one!

  • 50 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 22, 2014 at 11:33 AM

About Benny, I don’t know what the situation is and I don’t have the right info to say what happened at either Lyon and OM. All I know is he had a fallout the the manager both places and he himself has said he was a spoiled brat back then!

But that is then and I’ll judge him on the present :)

I suspected as much of HBA. Santon going would be a loss but not that detrimental. But we would need a cover/competition rb specialist to give Debs a push. MYM is best at cb get another cb in and let Colo go his heart isnt in it and ideally wants away.

i think the midfield are doing a great job this year, they look a lot better when we have the 3 in there.

as for debuchy, he was getting caught out a lot last year but has settled well.

santon still gets caught out but the problem i have is when you see him slowly jogging back to position, he should be sprinting back to prevent a goal.

  • 54 Ancientcoptic // Jan 22, 2014 at 11:40 AM

some very good points on here today

for the record, I like santon, I think he is an athlete and does have abilty

he was a good prospect, but has not moved forward in his development the way I thought he would, but I do not put any blame on him, he does what is being asked of him, just like debuchy, just like any of our fullbacks, they all bomb forward,

  • 56 bobby mango // Jan 22, 2014 at 11:41 AM

It wasn’t just the Europa league that affected us last season. It was naive transfer dealing, inadequate squad, terrible tactics by Pardew, injuries and loss of form.
You’d hope they’ve learnt from it and will be much better equipped if we do qualify.

  • 57 jayphoto // Jan 22, 2014 at 11:41 AM

Personally I can do without the prince. I don’t think it does any good to the sport in the long run.

On Ashley; I think he runs the club like it should be run when we add 2-3 quality players without loosing anybody. 3-4 when we sell Cabaye. Now it’s one step forward and one step back it feels.

I’ll judge Ashley after the summer window when the extra money from EPL is in the bank. If he doesn’t spend then I’ll welcome the prince with open arms.

jesper – I think jayphoto is right about the IP addresses. If someone was in communication directly with you (your phone/pc) by email or such – then you could but as we are sending our posts to Eds site -we cannot. Ed would be able to do it though -as we are all in direct communication with him.
I would not be greatly worried about what I think has “upset” you. The blog is a mix of all sorts -decent informed posters/exotic posters/idiots who should not be allowed to communicate at all/those with unusual and interesting views/those who think they have interesting views/aggro merchants/aggro merchants who post at night aided by alcohol/ aggro merchants who post they are considerate of others but conveniently forget they slag off folk etc etc.
There was someone on the other day -hand on heart saying he respected the posts of others and did not slag folk off. After reading his offerings, and knowing what he posts, I had to re- check who had posted it – looked like Mother Theresa had been re-incarnated.
So bottom line is -rise above the knobbers, tosspots and arseholes.

  • 63 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 22, 2014 at 11:53 AM

TS…my point about the midfield is not wherther they are playing good so to speak, but that they – for me that is – is the reason why our fullbacks and wide-men at times look bad and get alot of heat!

…they are not up to their responsibilities and they don’t safe guard the defense and they don’t get forward enough – they are a bit in between which is what’s hurting us!

That’s how I see us…and that has not improved from last season. What’s improved is their individual performance, though I am still not impressed with Sissoko :)

I very much suspect with Sissoko, its his potential ability that keeps him in the side! He needs games to progress and we may benefit for years with some kind of yaya toure clone because of it!
What i will say on him is that when he plays well hes an absolute monster! Its easy to forget how young he is

    Mister Tuff

The beauty of the Internet is that everyone can have a go but the disadvantage is that there are people on it who you wouldn’t ordinarily associate with in public or even privately!

Like you said you just have to ignore and pity some of the idiots and thank heavens you don’t have to rub shoulders with them.

  • 70 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 22, 2014 at 12:04 PM

  • 71 Transfer Sage // Jan 22, 2014 at 12:04 PM

i think if anything the midfield do too much covering to let the fullbacks attack and in recent weeks the balance has been spot on, none more so that west ham in the first half.

But i guess this is another issue we disagree on haha,

As for people insulting/posting multiple accounts I always find it’s best to ignore them altogether or just engage them using a sensible/normal approach you would with others, without a reaction they soon get tired and hassle others.

  • 72 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 22, 2014 at 12:07 PM

…yeah I know I should have seen that one lol

But a PG where you are from (or India in this case) is that something you can only start after a Master degree?…hence the Ph.D you just mentioned?

  • 73 Novocastrian66 // Jan 22, 2014 at 12:07 PM

Slank; definitely. The competition is too long and is not financially rewarding. UEFA need to incentivise the competition. Offering a Champions League spot to the winner is insufficient. They need to put more money into the tournament.

  • 74 Mister Tuff // Jan 22, 2014 at 12:08 PM

jesper – you have to be very clever in hiding your identity on a written blog – people tend to use the same expressions/have a similar message/make the same grammatical mistakes etc etc. With a few posts you can usually see who they are. I was on about this the other day -authorship identification/linguistic fingerprinting.
There are one or two lads on here who are pretty good at spotting multiple posters -they are annoying sometimes but in the long run not worth wasting your own time being distracted by them.

  • 79 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 22, 2014 at 12:12 PM

…but sometimes someone just rub the wrong button at the wrong time…or the right time if you see it from their perspective lol

But you are very right indeed about authorship identification/linguistic fingerprinting. Both Ruddy and J4A seem to be very good at spotting this I suppose ;)

    Transfer Sage @9

I’m not sure if spreading a fee over a five years @. £45m pa would help get around FFP rules. The debt would surely sit on the balance sheet for the four of the five years – the £225m being reduced by £45m each year ie years one to four – £180m, £135m, £90m, £45m then zero.

Any experts on FFP out there? Please correct this if need be – it seems too incomplete to me.

  • 84 Mister Tuff // Jan 22, 2014 at 12:17 PM

I do not think the “gobshites” would have such big gobs when in face to face situations. Hi Jesper, how’s you and your Nokia?

Normally, a post-graduate follows the first degree for example in England, a first degree could be a BSc. Further study and subsequent degrees at a higher level, post-graduate or PG, could include an MSc and/ or a PhD, which is higher than an MSc.

There’s no international norm and qualifications vary ftom country to country. Don’t know how ut works in India though – perhaps Himanshu would be able to tell us?

Himanshu, would you help explain how it works in India, please?

I agree, I think it’s a totally different training style you need with europe as you waste 3 days in the week travelling. playing and resting so match prep is totally different which mus have an impact.

They also don’t have a big enough squad, like we did, and relied on 2/3 key players.

We however have added 5 since the start of last season and with a few more now and in the summer i think we could compete in europe and still be ok.

    lesh

it still makes sense in a a way, as if they buy somebody this year at madrid they will need to take that 14mil from bale this year and whatever the yearly fee is from the new guys too. Just means that if one year you want to gamble a bit you aren’t punished for that year if you have spent well the previous or following years.

    Catchy

Exactly, swansea win the next two and they sit 10th and people think they are doing well. It’ so tight in the bottom half anything can happen. Bony is back and firing again and they have just had some tough games.

catchy – I know we live in a world now where argued debate should take precedence over settling things physically – having said that I sometime would love to give one or two on here a damn good thrashing.
The internet/social media does provide a platform for everyone to voice the opinions -whereas in the past some folk in society were not heard by anyone or what they said was disregarded by others. Now in the modern world all the idiots/short arse pipsqueak big gobs now have a public voice whereas in the past they didn’t – just something we now have to put up with. Sometimes it’s difficult to respond to insults on line -when you never experienced them in real life but that’s the way it is now.

Luuk De Jong is a good player just not sure if he will do well in the PL.

Still atleast its something to be excited about.

I think no one will leave this window, possibly 1 or 2 signings but we won’t spend over £12m I think that is the limit.

Personally would love to see us sneak Gomis over the line for cheap, I mean he is the kind of player we need to replace Ameobi and is a better player than him…..

    Transfer Sage

Re your post @92 about Bale, thinking about it, I’d say that his value (£83m or whatever) his value as an asset would be ammortised over the six years. That’s akin to depreciation of his value as an asset on the balance sheet.

His fee is a liability on the balance sheet and if it was to be paid over six years then what I said would prevail.

Any accountants out there that could clarify that point for my peace of mind?
