There is news today in the Daily Star that Newcastle are after another Frenchman, this time it’s 23 year-old attacking midfielder Clément Grenier, who has played for all of the French Youth sides and has three caps for the full France side.
Clement Grenier – Lyon’s 23 year-old attacking midfielder
The player was born in Annonay in and started his career at his hometown club FC Annonay in France, when he was around seven years old.
His outstanding play saw him join Lyon back in 2012 as a 12 year-old. and he has played over 110 times for the French club with 15 goals and over 20 assists, and this season he has 7 goals and 6 assists in 30 appearances for Lyon.
Grenier is known for his technical ability, dribbling skills, and free-kicks, and that should remind you of a player at Newcastle he may just eventually replace – Yohan Cabaye.
The right footed star can play on the right side of midfield, but he can also play in the attacking midfield position just behind the striker, and Newcastle were linked with this midfielder a number of times last summer.
He made his French debut last summer when he was brought on in the second half in the 1-0 defeat by Uruguay, and then he again came on as a substitute in the 3-0 defeat by Brazil, for his second full cap.
The fee mentioned in the press today is that he would cost around £10M, with Liverpool and Arsenal also said to be interested in the player.
It’s not mentioned if Grenier is a target for Newcastle this month or in the summer, but he has now been watched by Chief Scout Graham Carr for over a year now.
Maybe he is being watched in case PSG make a late move for Yohan Cabaye this week, and presumably he could quickly be brought in as a replacement?
Newcastle are also expected to sign 23 year-old Remy Cabella from Montpellier, but in the summer, assuming we can get a deal agreed with the French club.
Here’s some video of Grenier – he’s a very good technical player.
