Newcastle After Another French International Midfielder

There is news today in the Daily Star that Newcastle are after another Frenchman, this time it’s 23 year-old attacking midfielder Clément Grenier, who has played for all of the French Youth sides and has three caps for the full France side.

clement grenier

Clement Grenier – Lyon’s 23 year-old attacking midfielder

The player was born in Annonay in and started his career at his hometown club FC Annonay in France, when he was around seven years old.

His outstanding play saw him join Lyon back in 2012 as a 12 year-old. and he has played over 110 times for the French club with 15 goals and over 20 assists, and this season he has 7 goals and 6 assists in 30 appearances for Lyon.

Grenier is known for his technical ability, dribbling skills, and free-kicks, and that should remind you of a player at Newcastle he may just eventually replace – Yohan Cabaye.

The right footed star can play on the right side of midfield, but he can also play in the attacking midfield position just behind the striker, and Newcastle were linked with this midfielder a number of times last summer.

He made his French debut last summer when he was brought on in the second half in the 1-0 defeat by Uruguay, and then he again came on as a substitute in the 3-0 defeat by Brazil, for his second full cap.

The fee mentioned in the press today is that he would cost around £10M, with Liverpool and Arsenal also said to be interested in the player.

It’s not mentioned if Grenier is a target for Newcastle this month or in the summer, but he has now been watched by Chief Scout Graham Carr for over a year now.

Maybe he is being watched in case PSG make a late move for Yohan Cabaye this week,  and presumably he could quickly be brought in as a replacement?

Newcastle are also expected to sign 23 year-old Remy Cabella from Montpellier, but in the summer, assuming we can get a deal agreed with the French club.

Here’s some video of Grenier – he’s a very good technical player.

Chaps i mentioned a few weeks ago about a talk-in i was at where a former player (well respected by us all) gave a heads up into the running of the club.
The one point i want to bring up again is JFK. He was totally clear about the role JFK had, this was to stop in coming transfers and deflect the blame from Ash.
The talk-in was in October and this is the first chance we have to see if he is correct. This window is probably the clearest one we have in identifying how ambitious Ash is.
We are not going to get relegated, we are in a safe place but if we were to sign a couple of very good players CL or Europe competition could be reached.
JFK has not exactly pulled up any trees yet….. Time will tell.

Surprised people still think we’re trying to sign someone, no one coming in this window – unlikely to be any of our first team leaving unless a spectacular offer

Fella i can understand how that comment looks, i cannot say JFK will never sign anyone because that would be madness.

I should of added the former player was answering questions from the floor and that was his take on JFK. He also added the club is constantly up for sale and his opinion was Ash does not want the club to look bad ie the books for prospective buyers.

His direct answer was JFK was liked by the players, he was a decent bloke but was there to divert the flak aimed at Ash. He also saif JFK would never be offered the managers job BUT that JFK also stated he did not want it.

Again fella time will tell if we start to sign players or it could be after Ash has all the TV money at the end of the season he does sell up.

Hope i have clarified it a bit better. Cheers for the craic fella

    Newspapers are reporting stuff.
    Blogs are churning out articles.
    People are discussing transfers.
Ashley and Kinnear are sleeping soundly after making some ridiculously low offers.

    Ashley might get lucky.

I suspect with us signing anyone the game on 1st feb we would had a poor attendance.

But with the derby the house will be full and IF we win then all will be forgotten.
