There was news yesterday that Newcastle and relegation fighting Crystal Palace are both after 22 year-old Sochaux striker Cedric Bakambu, and that’s news the Mirror, although we have a hard job believing it.
Cedric Bakambu – 22 year-old Sochaux striker
We had reported last week that Sochaux, who are second bottom of the French league and 9 points from safety want to sell the youngster and use the money to bring in other players, but with only five days left in the transfer market, that will be a challenge, to say the least.
But we wonder if this lad is good enough for Newcastle, and it’s interesting that Crystal Palace are the only other English club interested in the player.
It had been expected the Sochaux striker would move to Rennes this month, but Rennes last Monday they signed Ola Toivonen from PSV for a fee of £2M.
Ola had been a potential Newcastle target over the summer.
There will be lots of reports that Newcastle are linked with players this week, before the transfer window slams shut at 11:00 pm on Friday night, and some will be simply made up stories.
This could be one of them.
Cedric has 20 goals for Sochaux in 90 appearances, and the fee for the youngster would be around €3M, which is £2.5M.

Newcastle offer €13m for Grenier, say L’Equipe. Imagine he’ll reaffirm commitment to Lyon when he visits us at @beinsports_FR tonight
