Newcastle Put In Bid For Cabaye Replacement

There are reports in France today that Newcastle have made a €13M (£10.6M) offer for Clement Grenier, the Lyon midfielder, and we had a report out yesterday that said that Newcastle were interested in the 23 year-old, who could be a direct replacement in case Yohan Cabaye is sold this week.

Clément Grenier

Clement Grenier – 23 year-old Lyon midfielder

When you look at Cement’s abilities – his terrific technical ability, dribbling skills, and free-kick prowess, you cannot help but wonder if this lad would be a direct replacement for Yohan Cabaye this month.

But there are a number of problems for Newcastle to secure the transfer, if  Yohan is sold this week.

Although the player is thought to be willing to join Newcastle, Naples are also interested and they can offer him Champions League football which Newcastle cannot.

There’s also the Lyon President, Jean-Michel Aulas, who doesn’t want to sell any of his best players in January, which is understandable.

If Cabaye is sold – and we suppose that depends on whether PSG or Manchester United are willing to come up with a £25M bid in cool cash before 11:00 pm on Friday night, then Newcastle must bring in a  replacement, otherwise a potentially (very) good season could be in jeopardy.

In many ways Mike Ashley runs Newcastle as if it was a bank, where money is everything, but in football you cannot keep selling your very best players if you cannot replace them with somebody as good – or almost as good.

And the top football clubs very rarely sell their very best players, because they want to build the best team they can.

We hope nothing happens this week, and that Yohan is still a Newcastle player come Saturday.

Oh – and we play Sunderland at home on Saturday afternoon, after playing at Norwich City tomorrow night.

We need 6 points from those two games.

Comment welcome.

why pick a team, esp an English team?

just watch a Spanish or dare I say a real French team

I could never pick another English team

anyway , Norwich tomorrow , then the big one , anyone else think we are in for another derby defeat ?

He’s a very different type of player to Cabaye, although he’s also a very capable player. If I have to criticize him I would say he flinches the challenge a little easily for my liking, but this is something we can work on.

@HD_07 ha! Good question. Different players. Like them both. Grenier more a Cabaye replacement. More solid. But Cabella a delight on his day

If we can get £25m for cabaye and bring in this guy, for £12m or so I think it’d be good business, Grenier is 5 1/2 years younger, and looks a really good player, good with both feet and a little quicker and a good dribbler. that would leave £13m to get in a top striker / cabella.

I don’t want to sell cabaye, but it’s clear we can’t keep hold of him, so we have to make the most out of it.

TS – from last topic. Surely if we forced Cabaye to rot in the reserves and we were still paying his wages we would be better selling him – at least we would have the transfer money and no wages. This is not what I want but seems the lesser of 2 evils.

Don’t forget that if PSG pay Cabaye a signing on fee to buy out his contract, it is taxable, so under UK tax laws, double the money you are thinking of, under French Law, treble it.

On top of the possible legal delays, this might not look as attractive or simple as it first appears.

So allegedly JFK announced ‘No players will leave in this window’….We all know JFK is always true to his word !

I think we may have forgotten due to our lofty league position and decent football lately that our club is still ran by muppets.

Cabaye deserves CL and unless our leader has a complete change in ambition he aint going to get it here.

I genuinely believe until Ash realises all the other Chairmen at other clubs are laughing at him he will remain. That pint swigging moment followed by the ‘Jabba the hut ‘ mouth wobble….Priceless!

    I dont like Ash.

Iv just been thinking what are peoples opinions on the following situation.

Everyone keeps slagging our ambition to be better so if we keep cabaye after rejecting large bids (£20mil+) for him from “bigger clubs” being theyre likely to be involved in CL football. at the same time no other players come in. Is this a success? is it ambitious to once again claim “we have kept hold of our top players”?

I dont want to get into a debate about MA and all that but its a bit of a now in situation as fans will always want more and more and more….

Personally if we get an offer near to £25mil i would take it. He’s a very good player but there are a lot of better players out there. I prefer him more advanced and he likes to be deep where i think he is less effective (although this is because nobody else can create) We could get 2 or 3 players for that.

‘ Then surely the club would just come out and say that rather than the advertising is there as an example. Sorry mate but don’t buy that at all’

    Yes, you would think so.

But I have never heard of a board director authorising payments to himself because he uses his own property to advertise his employer so I’m assuming it hasn’t been done before or can’t be done?

I’m sure we would have read in the media about directors in SD or any other company siphoning off money to themselves thereby diluting potential dividends to investors many of whom are pension funds. Perhaps there is a Magpie supporter out there who is knowledgeable about such things.

Clement Grenier is superb on the ball and is cracking at set pieces, but tackling is a weakness. I have been dropping his name for ages, there a few players at Lyon that are worth a shout and they are struggling financially (which is why we were linked with Gomis).

To me the Cabaye situation is another WC v CL decision for the player (similar to Rooney) and it will be the outcome of that decision which will see him move sooner or later. I would not expect Ashley to offer him a larger deal to stay when he can expect a tidy profit on selling.

I am seriously beginning to doubt the long term development of the squad, indicated by the lack of out going players as much as incoming. Where is the Joeker and where is the money? I am repeating myself from the summer and potentially we will end up with one more loanee…again.

    Hi Everybody,

I’ve been reading this blog for around 2 years, love it, how all the regulars are on here.
Love the buzz of the matchday, even though t’s so bias when we win.

But something has to be said ..

People moaning that Mata who hasn’t kicked a ball is worth 37m ?

So what if he hasn’t kicked a ball, he’s the second best No.10 in world football, Oezil was 42m, so 37m Mata was about right.

Mata is also 25 years of age compared to Cabaye’s 28 years of age.

The only reason Cabaye is precious is because he’s precious to us. We can’t win without him.
I wouldn’t sell him for no amount, but to another club he’s a 20M player, no more.

There is no reason why it couldn’t be done, it is a transaction between two businesses and the only difference the ownership makes is that Ashley would have to make sure it was done on justifiable commercial terms. That would be incredibly easy, but he chooses not too for reasons I can’t even guess at.

He has created commercial agreements the other way where SD sells and warehouses merchandise on behalf of the club, the theory is that this reduces NUFC costs and that may be true. It does however demonstrate that there is no law against such agreements, it is Ashely’s choice.

SD paying for advertising = less profit for SD.
Monies received by NUFC from SD for advertising will be taxed.
Therefore less money for Mr Tubbs. Easier to do nothing and benefit from the world wide publicty of the PL for SD -which must have a value.
Mr Tubbs is quite in order to do this -but the result is that it does not reflect the true earning capacity for NUFC.
You see different advertising at all PL clubs -so it must be worth something.

its comments like this from pardew that shows he is totally incompetent,

why does he need a few more weeks? he knows what he can do, or at least he should do,

today I think we will lose , also down to pardews incompetence , instead of mixing it up over the xmas, given a few players a rest, he will make a lot of changes in one match, players in from the cold with no form at all, he might even let ee-or shola lead them out as captain,

this argument about ben afra, why should he defend ???, id rather have him no where near our box, and in the other half of the pitch, where he can defend from the front,

the other thing, goofy or HBA, what does goofy offer ???really, he runs, but his passing is the worst, im talking really poor, he never creates anything,, yet he is our forward, he scores , but he wont get you 10 and create 10, HBA will,

a lot of you are now blinded into pardews style of defensive football, and you have forgot what the game is all about, scoring goals and winning games

Cardiff will be on a high from the new manager, 2-0 to them

Yes, there maybe no impediments but it doesn’t seem to be done or if it is it doesn’t get into the media, which is strange because I can imagine the press having a field day as I can see it now ‘workers pensions being stolen by billionaires’. Pension funds have massive stakes in public listed companies and I doubt they would sanction the behaviour.

Ref the 75% proposed tax in France. This is not yet in place. There was a case in France’s highest court in December which ruled that it was lawful. So it seems it will be introduced – whenever France’s budget proposals can be enacted.

if cabaye did go we’d have to see HBA in the number 10 role, give him a go, with decent cover behind him in anita and tiote he could be revelation.

I’d love to see marvoux in that role, be interesting to see how he’d go if he had a run of games there. He was the only one last year who saw and picked the pass quick enough before cisse was offside, he has great vision just his work ethic was questioned a lot.

He looked really good in the middle the couple goes he had there.

In my opinion the Arsenal game could have gone either way… we went to sleep for a free kick and it went their way.

Against WBA we should have changed the squad like all the other top six teams did because they were all knackered. We looked very knackered and it showed even more once Debuchy got sent off.

It was still a bad call by Pards to put out the same team as always and it back fired. We now go into a very winnable FA cup game against Cardiff and Pards yet again puts the league first and puts out the reserves so no doubt we’ll struggle

He does my bast@rd fruit in…we’ve been playing well again, he doesn’t rotate the squad, we run out of steam and then rest most of the first team squad for something we’ve always got a chance in with a bit of luck and a fair wind as proved by Wigan last year…but no…not Pards…he’s not going to be too upset if we fall at the first fence for the third year on the bounce because he’s nora got delusions of grandeur again thinking we can finish in the top six.

More chance of winning the FA cup if you ask me but not by putting out the reserves.

I think HBA could play in the number 10 role similar but not identical to Cabaye. The key to the position is having Tiote and Anita behind the number 10.

Marveaux could also play in that role but I’m inclined to go with HBA if there isn’t a new face arriving this week.

    Two things:

Get Grenier anyway, can’t have too much of a good thing.

    Coach, Skank

As far as advertising’s concerned, NUFC’s wholly owned by MA who can whatever he wants as long as it’s legal. SD is a listed company and limited by rules of financial governance.

If NUFC were to offer SD free and unlimited advertising there’s no reason why SD should refuse that offer.
