Pardew – I’m Not Confident Of Keeping Cabaye

2:21 pm, Monday, January 27th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 42 Comments

Alan Pardew has talked today and validated that a big club are coming in for Newcastle’s top player Yohan Cabaye, and Alan says it’s a wealthy powerful club – but it’s interesting he doesn’t mention Paris Saint Germain by name.

alan pardew angry

Alan Pardew - powerful club after Yohan Cabaye

This is what Alan said today:

“We know that we’ve got a club interested in Cabaye who are very wealthy and powerful. We’re conscious of that, but will be doing our best to protect Newcastle United.”  (translation – we’ll sell him for as much as we can)

“In many ways, the Andy Carroll one had less mileage than this one. That came really out of the blue, we never quite expected it. We never expected to see the back of him.”

“This has got as much mileage, if not more, because of the size of the club and the finance that’s behind it.”  “Am I confident of retaining Cabaye? No. I don’t think any team not in a Champions League position, or fighting for a Champions League position, would be any different.”

“We would need to bring someone in, for sure.” “But we’re going to need some time to do that. We’ve informed the club that are interested, and the agents that we’re very conscious of that.”

“We’re hoping to sign a player outside the Cabaye situation for the second half of the season, and are getting closer to that, on the positive side.”

So here we go again it seems, and if I was a betting man I’d say Newcastle were going to sell Cabaye in the next day or two – but that while Newcastle want to bring in a replacement for the Frenchman – that might not be easy.

And if that’s an accurate portrayal of the current situation – it’s not a good position for Newcastle to be in – and on the surface,  it doesn’t seem much better than the position we were in after we sold Andy Carroll three years ago.

What’s that saying  about if you don’t learn from your mistakes – history repeats itself?

What do you think?

Thats him away then….. Next one please

  • 2 Bambams // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:26 PM

    Just a thought.

How long do you fellow bloggers expect Ash to stay with the Toon?

I cannot decide if he is just very slowly building a team or he is just trying to get as much cash as he can, buy cheap sell at a profit.

How much money does the man want/need !

    pardew also said:
“Yohan’s been very, very good,” said United manager Alan Pardew today.

“He’s preparing for the Norwich game. I expect him to play.”

PSG are expected to raise their offer for Cabaye, 28, in the next 48 hours, and Pardew is adamant that if he leaves, it will be on Newcastle’s terms.

“We know the club interested in Yohan is a wealthy club,” he said. “We’re conscious of that, and we’re doing our best to protect Newcastle.

“The conversations are going on above me. My job is to get the best out of him.

“He has a great role at this football club. The team is centered around him.

“He’s an important cog in our system. If you take him out of the team, it makes us vulnerable.

“We’ve got to protect ourselves going forward. That’s the situation at the moment.”

Asked about the need to replace Cabaye before Friday night’s transfer deadline should the France international leave, Pardew said: “We’d need to bring in someone, for sure.

“You can’t lose a player of that quality.

You know every time PSG doesn’t meet our valuation I would just slap another £5M on the price tag ;)

…what’s they gonna do? Buy Pogba for £45M? That will really show us ;) lol

  • 5 lewisnufc // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:27 PM

so is Pards also saying there that were close to a signing regardless? possibly a striker… must be de jong or gomis

  • 6 TurkishFan101 // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:29 PM

    What does Pardew mean by

“We’re hoping to sign a player outside the Cabaye situation for the second half of the season, and are getting closer to that, on the positive side.”

So that we are signing a player that has got nothing to do with replacing Cabaye and does that mean we will also sign a Cabaye replacement along with Luuk De Jong? or just signing Cabaye replacement with Luuk. I could see this as Cabell, Grenier and Luuk potentially.

Mata is a much better player imo the best player in the league last season. Stats for goals and assists were insane! and the amount of games he played in the whole season – i doubt cabaye could manage that tbh. He seems to struggle with “fatigue” or have it used as an excuse for poor form.

Good point RE: Debuchy been very good this season. PSG were linked earlier this season werent they. Maybe the double deal is back on the cards!? Maybe thats why pards has been trying santon at right back a few times so we have a possible replacement with haidara slotting in at LB. I must admit tavernier has been really impressive on loan at rotherham, still think he could become a really solid premier league right back. I know everyone will hump on me about that comment though. Im not saying he could slot in next season.

Personally £20mil+ for cabaye is good business he is most definitely replaceable. £25mil or more would be great business imo. CM is our strongest area Sissoko, Cabaye, Anita, Tiote, Bigi, Gosling? We wouldnt need to rush a replacement although that would be preferrable.

  • 8 jayphoto // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:30 PM

Pretty sure they are going to buy Pogba in the summer anyway! Cabaye will be a starter at PSG until the summer ! Can’t imagine other clubs won’t come in for him though hes a top player having a good season and starts for France.

“We’re hoping to sign a player outside the Cabaye situation for the second half of the season, and are getting closer to that, on the positive side.”

Does that mean we are trying to sign a player in that position regardless of the Cabaye situation or is it just Pardew speaking in tongue’s once again?

  • 11 cjtoon // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:31 PM

btw anyone know which clubs are involved with this loan move for ince? Sounds like the wierd sort of move we would make rather than just buying him!?

  • 12 jayphoto // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:33 PM

Whats happened to Bigirimana by the way? No games, no loans? Thought he had a great season at cov in the championship winning an award and then did well for us last year in difficult curcumstances… This year hes completely MIA

  • 13 TurkishFan101 // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:34 PM

Don’t think its us mate… He is a free agent in the summer, and if we could make him agree a pre-contract that would be great.

  • 14 Toon1978 // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:35 PM

Never heard so much dribble in all my life. NUFC had a year to find a replacement for Cabaye, ever since the rumours started about clubs being interested. Now he is saying we need time, DAMN rights we do. Unfortunately with a tad of conspiracy chucked in for good measure, it looks like we will lose CABS with 4.5 days left in the window. Very well planned by the board.

  • 15 cjtoon // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:35 PM

Exactly what im sure most are wondering. I think because the youth players were used as a scape goat for a lot of the negative things last season they have been virtually forgotten about this season. Its bizarre they havent been involved in rotation or loaned out.

I think swansea must be the club in for ince. They were linked when the window opened pretty sure they had talks actually.

  • 16 tomr2410 // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:37 PM

Didn’t Joe Kinnear say last week that we wouldn’t be selling Cabaye? Surely he wouldn’t lie to us!

  • 17 jayphoto // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:37 PM

@CJtoon – Ince loan to premier league makes alot of sense actually! Blackpool have little to play for now, wont go up, wont go down! Hes told the club he intends to see his contract out! Whoever takes him in the summer will be required to pay compensation set by the FA! That compensation will be a lot higher if he has a great half season on loan in the premier league and gets say an international friendly call up! England arent exactly stocked at left mid so that wouldn ‘t be inconceivable if he takes the league by storm

  • 18 TurkishFan101 // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:38 PM

Very well said, JK is only used as a stunt man in simple terms. He has no capabilities, knowledge of the current football game. Remy on loan was actually done before he came here so JK did not sign him. Giving Director Of Football to someone like Graham Carr would of done huges of success for this club. The only man that is a genuine Newcastle supporter for life left in the staff at Newcastle United, and knows a player when he sees one.

  • 19 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:43 PM

jayphoto…that kid didn’t want to go out on loan which was a really bad call by the lad in my opinion :(

  • 20 Spoof // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:44 PM

that’s a matter of opinion m8, as attacking goes Mata is excellent, but in fairness to Cabaye he is almost as good, but when it comes to defensive duties Cabaye is very good whereas Mata is non-existent, straight choice and I would go for Cabaye, but there is not alot between them, certainly not the £23m more which Man U paid compared to what PSG offered.

  • 21 cjtoon // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:44 PM

Yeah totally makes sense for Blackpool, Just thought whichever PL club it is (presumably Swansea) would want to do a permenant deal now even if its decided to leave him there until the end of the season, although im not sure why they would.

Blackpool would surely have a price in mind to sell now rather than risk the outcome of a tribunal which are notoriously hard to gauge?! Then the PL club could avoid any price rise. I suppose its a gamble either way but wouldnt imagine it will be a huge sum either way.

  • 22 martoon // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:44 PM

jayphoto @12 – I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that Bigi is injured – an ankle injury I think.
It looks like Cabaye is gone – no way will Pardew be allowed to play him against Norwich if it jeopardised the deal. I just hope to god we have got some replacements lined up but I’m not confident in JFK

  • 23 TurkishFan101 // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:45 PM

On another note, Clement Grenier will shine in the Premier League. But would that mean we would be purchasing Cabella? I would think if Cabaye is sold, Grenier would go CAM Sissoko back in next to Tiote as Holding mid/Box to Box midfielder. Get Cabella on the right with Grenier and Cabella rotating around in game sounds awesome! with also Ben Arfa! Only wish that could happen along with Luuk.

    Clement Grenier
    Remy Cabella
    Luuk De Jong

Buy these players Mike and show ambition. You could be making 4x the profit and value in the future Mikey!

  • 24 TurkishFan101 // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:45 PM

    Clement Grenier:

as a recent convert to chelsea i am gutted to see mata leave lol

  • 26 bobby mango // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:47 PM

£20m for him is about right. Won’t get more than that after this year.

We’re in a much better position than when Carroll left. We have players (albeit not as good) that can come in for him. HBA could start getting some games, maybe even Marv.
We’re also in a comfortable league position.
It’s not the last day of the window… Yet.

  • 27 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:49 PM

I never really understood why you wouldn’t play your players even though a club is interested!

…until a bid is accepted and he has had a medical he is our player.

    End off!

  • 28 JAMSHA // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:50 PM

sad if cabaye leaves… looks like its happng for real after i sold cabaye to psg for 38mil on fifa 14… shouldnt have sold him… but hope we get that price.. 20mil would b peanuts

  • 29 Transfer Sage // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:51 PM

if this deal has to be done name the price they want now and tell psg they have by the end of the day to meet it otherwise it’s off til the summer

we need to be agreeing deals with the clubs for players we want so they arrive right away

  • 30 jayphoto // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:52 PM

@cjtoon – think Ince is determined to see out his deal and go for free /minimal value in the summer!
To be fair on a free , if he has a good 6 months on loan in the EPL hes probably got a goid chance of a 40,000 p/w contract at a Newcastle, Spurs , southampton, everton , villa or West Ham sized club! Theres no way hed get that kind of money at Swansea

  • 31 martoon // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:52 PM

Jesper @26 – For the simple reason that if the player gets injured then the whole deal would be in jeopardy.

  • 32 Transfer Sage // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:52 PM

I guess it depends if you want the deal to happen to get your hands on the money you won’t risk him in the game.

It’s like me agreeing to buy your car then you taking it out rallying for the day, just wouldn’t make sense.

  • 33 Spoof // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:52 PM

I totally agree, it annoys the life out of me when they do that, it even annoys me when we are buying someone and they get left out, it’s always nice to see who you are getting before they sign, it gives an interest to another wise meaningless game

  • 34 cjtoon // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:53 PM

No offence Cabaye isnt close to mata in an attacking sense. He is very good granted Mata is World Class i actually think £37 mil for mata is a bargain tbh. Why bale is worth double that and more i really dont know.

Last season for club and country mata played 75!!!!! games racking up 5,266 mins with 22 goals and 39 assists. can we behave saying cabaye is nearly as good in an attacking sense. Plus mata is a couple of years younger and probably hasn’t hit his prime yet whereas Cabaye is arguably entering his.

Yes granted he is a lot better defensively and sorry i did mean to put its hard to compare the two as they are not both outright number 10 players. I just think mata is in another league but obviously that is my opinion and i would imagine we need to agree to disagree.

  • 35 ash1001 // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:55 PM

Once again Pardew is p-ss-ng, me off,, he should have a name badge that says – Pardew ‘Player Sales Manager’, why the hell does he not keep his big mouth shut.
He’s more dangerous that Shola with his statements to the press, and seeing he is not talking to NJC publications he is doing a damm good job of getting his sales patter across.

  • 36 JAMSHA // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:57 PM

if he goes ill be gutted.. will miss those long 30 yard goals an free kick :-(

  • 37 jayphoto // Jan 27, 2014 at 2:57 PM

Mata is an elite level player! Cabaye is a very very good player but Mata is a player you build a top side around! His vision and technique is superb! I rate him as the best creative player in the Premier League with possibly only Suarez, Aguero and Toure ahead of him! If Ozil was worth 42m then man utd have got a bargain

  • 38 JackButler // Jan 27, 2014 at 3:03 PM

We Will sell him just in time for the window close and leave ourselves not.time to reinvest any money thus leaving ourselves short for the rest of the season.

    A pathetic state of affairs

  • 39 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 27, 2014 at 3:04 PM

    martoon…that’s life mate!

…but until a fee is agreed and he has had a medical he is our player!

Says Mt Pardew….. ‘We would need to bring someone in, for sure.” “But we’re going to need some time to do that. We’ve informed the club that are interested, and the agents that we’re very conscious of that.”

Need some time? How much time do these people need – how long’s Cab’s departure been trailed? They’ve known it’s been on the cards for a while now!

  • 42 toonicle // Jan 27, 2014 at 3:27 PM

Would be refreshing to bring a new player in before Cabaye leaves, just for once sign a replacement before selling the star. Seems we always put ourselves in a bad negotiating situation by selling first and then chasing a replacement.
