Cabaye Asked To Leave Newcastle To Join PSG

12:56 am, Tuesday, January 28th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 163 Comments

There is news in the Mirror today that Yohan Cabaye met with Newcastle manager Alan Pardew yesterday, and told him that he wanted to leave Newcastle to get Champions League football at Paris club PSG.

Yohan can play in the knockout rounds of the Champions League since Newcastle have not qualified for Europe this season, and so Cabaye is not cup tied.

Things happened quickly yesterday and it was a bad sign for Newcastle fans when PSG Football Director Olivier Letang traveled to Newcastle to negotiate the deal, because he wouldn’t have traveled if it wasn’t fairly certain a deal could be reached – or had already been agreed.

If this is true than it’s the second time in six months that Cabaye has asked to leave the club, after he went on strike in August, when an £11M bid came in from Arsenal for the Frenchman.

Newcastle have again showed they are willing to sell their very best players for top dollar halfway through the season.

And Alan Pardew said today before an agreement was reached to sell the Frenchman that the Newcastle team revolves around Cabaye.

We wonder how Alan Pardew is feeling about all of this today – he cannot be happy.

Please fellow Toon fans, read what I have written below and respond.

I just want to say that by selling Cabaye, the main player which the team is playing around will make Pardew turn back to the negative, hoof, defensive counter attack football which saw us nearly getting relegated if it wasnt for Marveaux. If Marvo was getting assists and creating good chances when playing football like that, imagine him in a number 10 behind the likes of Remy.

I would like to remind fans that if it wasnt for Marveaux’s marvellous creativity when he played last couple of games which he finally got the chance to when coming back from injury, we would have been relegated, no joke.

Now, if Cabaye goes, we will go back to the low, defensive football which saw us get nearly getting relegated, mark my words. If you remember, when Cabaye signed here gave his first interview indicating how Pardew promised free flowing attacking football. Well now that is near anough gone since his been sold now.

Also statistics do not lie, over 60% games lost without him playing, did you not see last season? God forbid it ever happens again. He’s just letting players like Marveaux and Ben Arfa rot on bench and reserves.

Just remember, look back at the team play of last season, you cannot blame it all on injury. Why do you think Anita finally gets to start? He is a very good player but Pardew simply doesnt like having technical and flair players on the pitch. He would rather have the whole West Ham team and play Hoof then what he is playing with us.

Unless we have a plan to sign players like Clement Grenier, Remy Cabella and Luuk, also not selling the likes of Marveaux then it would be good business, but how Pardew will cooperate his tactics? we will know in the future games.

This is why Pardew will go sooner then later.

  • 2 Graeme // Jan 28, 2014 at 12:59 AM

Pardew is only “Hired Help” he has no say in the functioning of the club or the buying and selling of players.

He does what he is told and gets on with the job – end of.

  • 3 Graeme // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:01 AM

Turkish 101 – this may come as a shock, but Cabaye has been sold mate. Get used to the idea!!

  • 4 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:01 AM

Don’t worry Ed we have signed Cabs replacement in…..f@ck we forgot to sign his replacement ;)

  • 5 shanghai fan // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:02 AM

If he asked to leave, then we are better off without him. Can’t have a player striking/sullen twice in a season. We get 20m, funds to rebuild now or in summer, lets move on. Like Carroll, this is not necessarily the end of the road. Cheer up lads

  • 6 lesh // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:02 AM

if that report’s true, then nobody can blame him wanting to leave a club that’s showing absolutely no ambition whatsoever.

We’ll manage to attract nothing other than journeymen in future

He’s done a good job for us and I’m sure many’ll wish him well.

  • 7 Thump // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:02 AM

I don’t blame him. He’s ambitious and on the wrong side of his age group to be at a club that is literally a shadow of itself. I remember shortly after we were promoted somebody said that we’d be the next Aston Villa – a sentiment often shared on this blog – and they were spot on. That’s exactly what we are – a mid table club striving for mediocrity.

  • 8 Robby Bobson // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:04 AM

Its clear we has going to be on the edge every transfer window, its now up to the brains trust to get a replacement in. It was obvious at the first chance they would sell a 28 yr old for 20 million and try and buy a 23 yr old for 10, but i cant see the last part happening (grenier, cabella etc.)

  • 9 USAGEORDIE // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:04 AM

Better now than later. With 4 days left we have a descent shot of getting some players (de Jong & Grenier) over the line

  • 10 Mister Tuff // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:04 AM

When Cabs was in Paris a couple of weeks ago (when he was “injured” – clearly a lie). He was obviously making the initial moves for his departure. Sorry to see him go – cannot really blame him.

  • 11 p // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:05 AM

lesh, no we will attract young french guys who feel at home with all of the french contingent. Guys who want a stepping stone club and one that allows them to prove their worth in the premiership.

  • 12 manxpie // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:06 AM

spread your exactly right mate and i know it was gonna happen just the fact no players brought in 1st boils my piss lol
and this ashley doesn’t understand football is wearing very thin now he’s been here over 5 years and he still doesn’t understand that the manager needs the players at the right time and the fans want to see a competitive
    team it’s a joke like

does anyone know what “in principle” means?
thats all there saying on sky sports
infact now there saying “could cabeye be leaving” us?

  • 13 Robby Bobson // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:07 AM

Marveuax is by far our most creative player after cabaye, everytime i see that pass against stoke towards end of last season i do wonder why he cant even make our bench. However i think he lacks the intensity pardew will be looking for in a number 10 role, personally id stick hik straight in behind remy.

  • 14 p // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:08 AM

Thump, I think that is bollox. Last season we had injury problems and the distraction of Europe and admitted failing to invest. I read somewhere that Mash was livid that the development squad did not come to fruition.

He therefore invested in some decent (but inexpensive players) and, got a fitness expert in.

This is a big part why we find our natural position, just below the top clubs. I think he is shooting for top 8, not mid table and he will be happy with that.

  • 15 TurkishFan101 // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:10 AM

Got caught up studying in uni so, only just realised couple days left till window gets shut.

Well Game Over for us then, we are not looking to aim higher and don’t want Europa. Why don’t fans just cancel their season tickets and stop going cause our league position won’t change, add to that the Carling cup and f.a cup knockout, oh wait add on top of that the transfer of our best player AND add to that we are not getting a replacement for him!! Finally add to that we MAY get another loan signing (luuk de jong) who are we crystal palace? Cardiff? Oh wait even they show more ambition. Stadium capacity, fan base? Global image… The regime has blinded us all..

  • 16 Spreadthetoon // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:12 AM

Interesting post, I’d have Anita / Marveaux slot in where Cabaye plays. Though if I am truthful I doubt Marv will even make the bench. Any chance we can pull Abied from loan back???
Agreement in principle means that nothing has been formally agreed / Legally but will be subject to medical being satisfactory etc

  • 17 Spreadthetoon // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:13 AM

Right I predict that we move no further up the league and end mid table this season unless we have a couple of break through players come in this Jan starting with Cabella now I ‘m just dreaming …….no chance

  • 18 TurkishFan101 // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:13 AM

    Robby Bobson

No doubt correct mate, but pardew will stick Dan gosling there or make sissoko play there.. Don’t mind finally sticking Ben Arfa in his natural number 10 role..

  • 19 manxpie // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:14 AM

it wouldn’t surprise me if it was ashley who told the press about this webster rule thingy
why has it only been a big story with cabeye
there must’ve been 100′s of players in the same position and yet it was never heard of!?

  • 20 manxpie // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:16 AM

cheers spread i was holding a little hope that sky were just wanting some hits lol

  • 21 AaranD // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:17 AM

Cabella, De Jong and Grenier all 23 these are the signings that need to be made, but would cost around £30 million at least and Pardew as come out and said we can’t buy until we have the money come in.
I just hope now that Cabs has gone it doesn’t trigger a mass exodus..

  • 22 TurkishFan101 // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:19 AM

Anita could be our Mata, his vision, passing consitancy and agility is very impressive. I will be more than angry of Anita gets dropped, Parses has already wasted more than 1 half year of his development in the bench, if he had been playing consistently, he would be better player than Cabaye and the profit today would have been deemed gd if we had actual legit targets lined up. Mehdi Abeid needed that first team football, it has helped his development allot as we can witness, I’ll expect him to be in first team/bench next season.

  • 23 RonVanDam // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:21 AM

Another simple solution why cabaye was sold: We have 36 points. We wont be relegated without him.

  • 24 Sydney Toon // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:21 AM

Honestly, I think Ed really needs to take a dose of reality.
Cabaye is 28, in a world cup year. He signs with PSG where Blanc is and has a close relationship with him. He is also a key component of the national team.
Yes, I am very disappointed that Cabaye has departed, he really is an immense player, one of the best midfielders to have ever played for this Club.
Yes I am disappointed that we lose him mid season. But lets be clear, every player has their price, plus from this report, Cabaye wanted to leave. After the World Cup, he wants to play at the highest level, CL football.
Yeah we could scream about “ambition” or lack of, at the end of the day we are a Top 8 side, with a promising and secure future. Its not in our best interests to hold onto a player that clearly wants to leave for higher honours, honours we are not ready for without putting the club back 5 years in financial stability.
And this whole Everton have ambition… They are banking on Martinez keeping them in the Top 6. They have loans and debts, they have ongoing payments for players they have already got rid of. Yeah they have a great manager, one I would have loved to be with us, and to me that’s all that is missing, not star names but a Manager that brings a brand of football that we can be proud of, gets great results and allows Newcastle to maintain a strong position in the Top 6.

  • 25 TurkishFan101 // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:21 AM

Haha Parses, frikkin autocorrect on phone!! Also “of” supposed to be “if”. Pardew**

  • 26 Spreadthetoon // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:23 AM

Perhaps things are not so bad…….

    Cabaye alternatives………..

But then again I think he’ll slot Sissoko there……which IMO Sissoko is best coming from a deep position sitting alongside Tiote

  • 27 TurkishFan101 // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:27 AM

Yes exactly like holding box to box player. Hope he does not get pardewed like cisse, Marveaux and now Ben arfa. We potentially need a winger or two, a number 10 and a striker. When Colo goes we need a big powerful CB. Not much to ask for with the money we have gotten from Cabaye..

  • 28 Nomad // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:28 AM

Oddly enough, if he asked to leave, I feel slightly better about the situation. I have no problem with him asking to leave, he deserves better and may even feel he needs better to get ready for the World Cup.

It also means that he did want to leave, and not stay on for consistent play until the summer like earlier reports suggest, and I feel a tiny less hurt to be supporting a club that works the way ours does right now, as he obviously wouldn’t have been forced into the move.

  • 29 USAGEORDIE // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:29 AM

With Yohan and a Yoan both out the squad will more than likely look like…
    Sissoko–Anita–Tiote–Ben Arfa

  • 30 manxpie // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:37 AM

usa that will be the team apart from saylor for mym
and the attacking players on the bench will be obertan/marv and sammi!!
    thats it!!
oh and maybe our 17 y/o armstrong
well done joe remember this is our strongest squad in like ages!!
that goes to catchy and rotonda too!

  • 31 Spreadthetoon // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:37 AM

Remember Pardew saying that Marveaux had a future at the club, I think he knew full well Cabaye was going to leave this window.
Yes Sissoko IMO is definitely a box to box midfielder and it’s his best potential position, like a Yaya Toure. I would put HBA on the flank and Anita/Marv in the hole. Definitely not 442!No way…..

  • 32 TurkishFan101 // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:38 AM

Hoof-ball mate just watch the negative, containing football begin with results like last season to follow.

I am off, good night fellow magpies.

Remember stand united even at the hardest times!

  • 34 laurits90 // Jan 28, 2014 at 1:56 AM

    let’s face it:

-Cabaye wanted Champions LEague – something we can’t offer anytime soon.
-AND can you recall how extremely well we spent the Carroll money?

I think (and hope), a lesson is learned, and that we reinforce the squad this window.
Anyway we WILL have a much stronger squad for next season! :D

Who can say no to £20mill+ for a 28 year old with to years left on his contract?
And as it stands – did you actually believe in a CL-spot this year? (The Europa League is just a “season-ruiner” nevertheless)

  • 35 jimmysmith // Jan 28, 2014 at 2:06 AM

We have 4 full days to get some decent signings in and if they have been in serious negotiations up till now, that is plenty of time.

If we don’t see at least one genuine quality player introduced, I sincerely hope there is an immediate backlash from fans and long and loud criticism of the way the club is being run.

  • 36 whatsup // Jan 28, 2014 at 2:29 AM

BBC Sport says cabeye sold for 19 million, bloody disgrace, what a joke

  • 39 beefman13 // Jan 28, 2014 at 3:14 AM

AP reckons we have irons in the fire regarding transfers in the next few days and quote”do you think we would sell someone of Cabayes class without a plan” ermmm yes i do Alan we have seen it before havnt we, so its up to long Joe to get the deals over the line “yawwwnnn”

Maybe he will this time, maybe we have a cunning plan!!!???

Just to mention that Cabaye has asked for the move himself apparently according to press reports, if he dosnt want to play for our great club then so be it, yea he may have big ambitions, but PSG have also a massive squad and you may not get a starting spot every week yohan, football has a funny way of laughing in players faces hasnt it!

  • 40 beefman13 // Jan 28, 2014 at 3:19 AM

To add, we have had masses of time to get players over the line in this transfer window, if we dont and sell Cabaye its a case of we are virtually safe this season and we can maybe just about sustain our position in the league (just) but its a rip off for us fans if we get more of the bullshit regarding agents fees etc, we should have at least two or three ready to come in NOW!!!!

  • 41 expatmag // Jan 28, 2014 at 3:31 AM

To be perfectly honest, this has been on the cards for well over 6 months now and even though his recent performances have been good, 23 million quid for a player soon to be 29 yo is good business practice as long as this money is re-invested in the team. That, of course, is the major question.

I have a feeling that Ashley will say to Pardew that he has more than capable resources already at the club in Anita, Sissoko, Marveaux, Gosling who have the capability of taking over Cabaye’s roll in the side.

It would also be interesting to see if the likes of Abeid and Vuckic can provide Pardew with further alternatives to cover this position once they return from loan next season.

It fits his policy perfectly, by selling a player for almost 6 times hat we paid for him and a player who was clearly unhappy and probably putting in the performances to ensure he doesn’t miss out on the world cup.

I just hope we invest the money in other areas of the team that require it such as Ince, Trippier from Burnley, and the De Jong brothers..

Taxi for Cab. The dreamboat has sailed down the Tyne and over the channel. End of the world? No.

  • 43 lesh // Jan 28, 2014 at 3:36 AM

    Memo to Kinnear:.
You’ve got four days to get your arse moving. Four full days to get the players you’ve reportedly made offers for. De Jong by Tuesday, if the press’s reported it correctly and Grenier whom you’ve supposedly made an offer for. Increase the fee offer and offer him whatever he wants to get him on the books.

Oh, and while your in France, give Montpelier what they want for Cabella and pay him what it tskes to get him.

Four days Joe, four days to be judged on your signings. You’ve got a lot to do so get moving.

It’d be better to take Charnley with you just to show that the club’s serious and not run by complete idiots and no-hopers!

  • 44 lesh // Jan 28, 2014 at 3:40 AM

    Very apt!

  • 45 Premiership Manager // Jan 28, 2014 at 3:41 AM

I’ll give you another statistic, when HBA played in place of Cabaye we lost 60% of the games. The problem is HBA unbalanced the team and gave away possession too cheaply allowing the opposition to carve us open on the counter attack.

This is why Pardew is reluctant to play HBA from the start.

Regarding Cabayes replacement Anita has been groomed for the role and I believe that’s why we bought him, however that’s not to say that Marvaux or Bigi, (one attacking, one holding), won’t be able to force their way into the team.

People are sprouting doom and gloom however my guess is the board are anticipating both the market and the league to determine who we buy and who we sell.

We are becoming a better team and some of the football we’ve played this year has been some of the best we have played for years.

It’s not going to happen overnight however the style of play is slowly changing and so is the team to accommodate the new style of play.

We arguably have 3 very good wing backs in Santon, Debuchy and Haidara. We have three very good CM’s in Tiote, Anita and Sissoko. We have a very versatile attacking midfielder in Goufran and we have a world class forward in Remy.

If we get De-Jong he will come straight into the team alongside Remy. He hasn’t done well since going to Borrussia however he is still only 23 and has bags of potential.

Despite losing Cabaye we’re in a good position and we have sufficient midfielders to plug the gap, however if we play 4-4-2 or even 4-3-3 swaping out Cabaye for De Jong it could be very interesting to see how the season pans out

  • 46 toon62 // Jan 28, 2014 at 3:42 AM

19mln is a joke. On ESPN over here in states, they are reporting 25mln and they are saying that is 10 mln short of what Cabaye is worth in the current market. French reporter saying it is a steal for PSG…..

  • 47 Toon-Prodigy // Jan 28, 2014 at 3:48 AM

    No one can be surprised.

If i was Cabaye and at the age he is I hate to say it but I wouldn’t want to play for us either.

    He isn’t daft.

We are not looking to win anything in a hurry. Zero ambition. Why waste the best years of his career here? We have missed the boat with him, all we had to do was show him some ambition in his time here. You never know, he might of stayed. The lad has ambitions you can’t argue with that. It’s are structure and lack of ambition why he is leaving. Time is not on his side.

Like i’v mentioned before, Mike likes a kitty put away for transfers. Building the squad does not matter to him each window, it does not come first which it should. if he had any ambition he will put every penny of what we get back in for another quality centre midfielder.

Not a centre back, winger and centre mid with the money but 1 CENTRE MIDFIELDER. Of the same ilk as Cabaye.

Will he? Not on your nelly. Graham Carr is already out searching for the next valuable resale and has been for over a year, then we will start all over again. We are not looking to build a quality squad to win trophys, we are looking to make money from players by putting them in a shop window for a couple of years.

We should be using what money we have tucked away on reducing the gap in quality from our 1st eleven and second string. Not waiting for a sale of our better players before we invest.

  • 48 expatmag // Jan 28, 2014 at 3:51 AM

Agreed. I don’t think the sale is such a travesty when you consider all relevant points.

My biggest fear now is not replacing Cabaye but losing Debuchy, Remy and Mbiwa in the summer.

In my opinion, Remy is already gone for next season and so will Cisse so immediately, we need to buy two forwards. If Shola leaves, that will be 3.

Furthermore, how long has HBA got left on his contract. If it is less than 2 years, considering he is not a regular starter, I expect him to go to.

Take into account Marveaux, Gosling and Obertan either out of contract or not required, Kinnear and Co will have an exceptionally busy summer.

I honestly don’t think he is up to it

  • 49 expatmag // Jan 28, 2014 at 3:57 AM

Zero ambition says it all and if I was a young French lad looking to move and we were interested like Cabella and Grenier, the first thing I would be doing is getting on the phone to question Cabaye on the club.

I doubt the responses would be flattering.

I actually feel sorry for Pardew. This is the second time the soul of the club has/is being sold from under him. The first time, it was Carroll, Nolan, Enrique and Barton and recently, it is Ba, Cabaye and probably Cisse and Ben Arfa next.

How on earth can you build for the future when your best players are sold against your will.

If it was me, I would resign and probably get a better job elsewhere. Hell, there cannot be many worse than us, can there?

  • 52 Toon-Prodigy // Jan 28, 2014 at 4:19 AM

    This is it, your right.

Alot of people can see we are on a road to nowhere and it is going to be mid-table mediocrity under these policies for a long time to come. It goes against any sort of ambition or building for the future if we are selling our top players after a couple of seasons because their transfer fee’s are increasing. Alot of people still don’t get this.

It’s one of the main reasons which has prompted these groups to act and stand up. You cannot seemingly show zero ambition then expect supporters to buy season tickets year after year, it’s unheard of. Especially with our loyal fan base.

I think the majority realise Pardew has not had a fair chance. It must be hell to work under such circumstances especially in the limelight here in the North East where football is everything. That’s pressure for you.

I said a while ago after the summer kaos that he should just leave and teach mike a lesson. He has proven twice now he can pretty much deliver top 8 at least if he has a fit squad to choose from.

Under Mike though we will carry on missing the boat and chances to progress with his policies and structures. Pardew has said the same, he hurts the club with some decisions he makes.

We are already financially stable, now he is just being greedy with what we have.

There needs to be a fine balance between being prude with the cash and being ambitious but there isn’t. It’s all about making money for mike.

  • 53 Novocastrian66 // Jan 28, 2014 at 5:00 AM

Players move on from club to club. Nowt new there. I hope we bring in some new players and keep developing the squad.
The squad is far better than it was when we were promoted, there has been progress.
Good luck to Cabaye, I’m glad he didn’t end up at Liverpool or Man Utd. That would have been unbearable.

  • 54 Toon-Prodigy // Jan 28, 2014 at 5:08 AM

That’s the problem though, any progress is short lived and shot down with selling our top players.

Then we start the merry go round all over again.

Granted, he wanted to leave, but only because we are not willing to push and expand are ambitions.

We found this gem of a player, but instead of building a team around him and being ambitious and trying to keep him, we were always looking to sell him to the highest bidder and that leaves a sour taste in many mouths.

    Bedtime for me.

  • 56 theartfuldodger // Jan 28, 2014 at 5:25 AM

What a pathetic way to wake up in the morning….

Cabaye gone for a measely 19m.

No placement signed before the deal.

PSG showed seriousness about a transfer. Come, get their man and go.Not haggle around days and weeks.

Everyone will see how crap we play now. Lets see where the goals come from now.

On here everyone talking about sign this one and that and throwing in figures. Give it a rest guys. I just feel sorry for you cause you think all that will happen.

So any player who becomes world class gets sold. That tells you what kind of a team we aspire to be. We had no god damn interest in getting anyone.

People become accountants talking about finances. If cabaye went for 50m and we invested 18m would you be happy ?

And lastly.. Thats what we will get every season if we r too high up in the table. Dont buy anyone. And selling is no risk too.

  • 57 Santon03 // Jan 28, 2014 at 5:29 AM

Well I think it’s the correct decision to sell Cabaye now when PSG couldn’t get any of their main targets like Pjanic. If we left it in summer then they will have more choices which meansit will be more difficult to get 20mil for Cab, I certainly don’t want him to play in other premier league team.
Possibilities of the next few games:

or if we don’t get anyone in and Remy got injured:

I think the team still look good.

  • 58 Santon03 // Jan 28, 2014 at 5:32 AM

I’m still worried about striker position rather than midfield. Other than Remy and Gouffran, we have 2 useless strikers who can’t get a goal other than through penalty kick.

  • 59 theartfuldodger // Jan 28, 2014 at 5:32 AM

Whats worse for all of us is that we will be linked with the whole world even more so now. Everyone will be refreshing websites, pouring in on the news, suggesting on blogs to sign this and that for so much and asking friends about transfers on deadline day.

All to sadly end up with nothing, feel disgusted and goto sleep.

Apartently the centre piece of the team is worth 19m.
If you want to buy anyone from NUFC. Just offer 12-15m. Deal as good as done.

  • 60 theartfuldodger // Jan 28, 2014 at 5:38 AM

No team looks good without a playmaker.
Anita Tiote and Sissoko have no goals between them.

  • 61 cyprus // Jan 28, 2014 at 5:42 AM

The guy wanted out, even went on a strike to get his way. He put himself on the display case in the last couple months, he got his wish. This is not the same as in Andy’s case and you know it.
Now is the chance for people WHO WANT TO PLAY FOR NUFC to step up. Marveaux? HBA? Now they can get more playing time and get a chance to show their worth. Especially a player of HBA’s calibre needs to be on the pitch in a team like NUFC which is otherwise often quite predictable.

  • 62 savio // Jan 28, 2014 at 5:42 AM

I am a regular visitor but this is my first post….a really really sad day if the deal goes through…if Mike Ashley don’t replace Cabaye with a quality signing,I think we fans should be thinking of protests.I am fan from India…I don’t know how I can help sitting here…But its really sad to this condition. This is the only reason I don’t want Pardew to leave…He is not a world class manager or anything…But I don’t think we will get a much better replacement than Pardew when Mike Ashley is in charge…He was building a team around Caroll…and the board sells Caroll….now the he was building a team around Cabaye…and he is also going to be sold..No good manager will come us seeing this condition..The biggest dream in my life was to visit St.James Park one day…But now with Ashley in charge,I dont feel its worth it….

  • 63 Santon03 // Jan 28, 2014 at 5:47 AM

To me Cabaye is more like goal scoring midfield rather than playmaker lately. Pirlo is a playmaker, Pjanic, Kagawa, Honda, Ricky Alvarez, Xavi are playmakers. Cabaye is more like Vidal or Kaka.
His passing wasn’t as good as his first season, his corners are not that good, Anita is better. Cabaye is also similar to Sigurdsson imo.

  • 64 theartfuldodger // Jan 28, 2014 at 6:02 AM

Without going into the definition of playmaker,
I dont think Anita is incisive enough with his through balls. Also not enough long crosses.
He is either played as an extra man in midfield to keep possesion, make short quick passes or increase urgency. He cannot create goals.

I just dont feel tiote anita sissoko have goals in them. Maybe the odd goal. Going to be a crappy match to watch tonight.

I said at the start of the window that if he’s going anyway sell him now and get replacements in as EL and CL are all but gone, with four days of the window left why not just hang on till the summer, unless he had threatened to invoke that buy out thing, what would have been the problem in bringing in a few beford he left/or didn’t leave like Everton done with Fellani. Joe says nobody is leaving, Pards says Cabaye will play against Norwich, is the twisted fusker taking the pi$$ out of us !!!

  • 88 theartfuldodger // Jan 28, 2014 at 7:09 AM

I think Pardew will walk. But not now. He has definately enhanced his resume since joining us. He will stay as long as it makes him look better.
Approx in his 5th year if we are around 12th-15th, he will walk.

  • 89 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 28, 2014 at 7:12 AM

I can perfectly understand Cabaye wanting to leave for Champions league football, but not sure PSG is the best option for him. Lots of competition in the squad there and he may find himself in a similar position to Ba found at Chelsea – just as much time on the bench as on the pitch.

Personally, if it is to be PSG I’d be demanding their young midfielder Rabiot as a part ex on top of the 19million being paid. This signing will force him down the pecking order, and he may be willing to take a chance on first team football surrounded by other french players. Still, that would be far too straight forward for NUFC.

On a replacement, even if we got Grenier/Cabella now, there is no guarantee either will settle into the premier league straight away or even at all. I doubt we will see a direct replacement come in this window. With the club trying to sell Cisse, Remy only on loan, HBA coming to the final year of his contract, Shola and others contracts expiring this summer coming up is looking like a huge summer for the club and where it wants to be.

  • 90 Jail for Ashley // Jan 28, 2014 at 7:17 AM

I’ve always found you one of the most rational cool headed posters on here, what do you mean that this is going to be a huge summer, we know where the club want to be, hiring mid table managers and, can’t even describe JfK, the club keeps making statements of intent of it’s true ambition, why do some still think theres a master plan for success.

  • 91 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 28, 2014 at 7:18 AM

so sick of reading how Marv is our forgotten saviour. If he was THAT good he wouldve had his game in one of the cups for sure. But he didnt, so what does that tell you? I actually feel sorry for Pards this morning after reading this article, what he mustve done to get Cabs to play and then in the manner he did play just to get nothing but a slap in the face for a second time. The shame is definetely on you Cabs for the way you go about your business, all talk of a players ambition aside, this stinks of complete selfishness. Remember Andy Carroll anyone? He did the same thing. PSG probably got the call from Cabs himself.

  • 93 Charlietoon // Jan 28, 2014 at 7:20 AM

Does anyone else think that if we dont get someone in that we should stick Ben Arfa in the role that Cabaye was recently given. It’s his chance. If he does not take it we can get rid of him and know we tried our best to bring out his English game

  • 95 theartfuldodger // Jan 28, 2014 at 7:26 AM

Assuming cabaye was going to buy out his contract for 6m. The difference then is just 13m.
Isnt the drop in league position going to cause an overall loss ? Am I missing something ?

  • 96 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 28, 2014 at 7:27 AM

Losing the players that are likely to not be here next season will take us away from the mid table unless we bring in replacements. If Remy doesn’t sign (which I think most will agree it is unlikely) HBA will be sold or we lose him for free, the club are actively trying to offload Cisse according to reports in local rags and with Cabaye gone there isn’t a goalscorer amongst the squad or any real creativity.

So, what I mean by a huge summer is that other clubs will know we are desperate for firepower and prices will be inflated accordingly. The wonderful scouting network that we allegedly have and the fantastic transfer policy that some say we have will be pushed to its limits to get us ‘value’ or Ashley will have to break policy and pay over the odds.

If neither of those happens, then come this time next year we may be praying for mid table! Either that or Campbell and Armstrong need to improve exponentially over the next 6 months to solve our problem.

  • 97 Transfer Sage // Jan 28, 2014 at 7:27 AM

Really think people are overreacting predicting relegation and hoof-ball.
He want CL football, we’re getting a top price.

A replacement will be bought at some point. If it’s not this season we’re in a very comfortable position (12 points above 10th place). We can afford to try HBA in that role, or Anita with Bigi filling in his position.
We might even get De Jong in as well.

I hate Ashley but have no qualms at all over this bit of business.

Ashley is a complete tosser. He has done really well in stabilising the club financially but why sell our best player. Makes no sense in football terms. 19 mil it’s ben reported, I think he’s worth 30 mil.
I’m so pleased I can’t make the Sunderland game as they are getting stronger and we are weaker.

I always found Cabaye a little over hyped to be honest, don’t get me wrong, he is a clever player that has his moments either scoring or unlock defenses but lets not get too carried away, I would not put him in the £20 Million category ever, his corner record is abysmal, every time we get a corner I know it will come to nothing and he’s not the type of player to make runs into the box like a Lampard, these days I think you need to have a Midfielder that will be a constant threat to the opposition by either beating players 1 vs 1 or making tricky runs into the box to make space for either themselves or thier team mates… I believe Benny should be given Cabaye’s role but leashed in a little cause he can be very lax with the ball sometimes, with some nurturing and half a season playing consistently in this role he could be twice the player cabaye was, he takes better corners too…

Id play hba in the no10 role tonight behind remy. Wether people like it or not, wide players have to work hard and do some defensive work, so hba is not suited out there. Stick with socks and goofy and have anita and tiote covering hba. He will then have his freedom.

  • 139 Himanshu Dhingra // Jan 28, 2014 at 8:21 AM

People talking about Cabella, Grenier De Jong, if it was about the team Cabaye would never have been sold

  • 140 Markaccus // Jan 28, 2014 at 8:23 AM

Hba is good enough but needs to sort his attitude out. There is no need to throw the “deluded” bs out there either, especially when marv has EXACTLY the same short comings as hba.

  • 141 jordijohnty // Jan 28, 2014 at 8:24 AM

The nearest team to us in the league have just spent 35 million on a player. We, on the other hand, just sold ours for 20 million. That sums up where we are in footballs pecking order

  • 142 theartfuldodger // Jan 28, 2014 at 8:24 AM

What about the loss when we drop league positions this season ??????????

  • 143 Keith in France // Jan 28, 2014 at 8:24 AM

If you were a professional footballer and were offered the chance to play for one of the biggest clubs in Europe – certainly one of the richest – play Champions League every season and in the country of your birth, you would not turn the chance down.

Selling him for £20m has to be good business – he would have gone in the summer anyway especially if he had a decent World Cup.

At least he hasn’t gone to another Premier team – so he can not really do us any harm.

Finally, some of the comments on this blog beggar belief – to wish someone dead just because he owns our club – frankly I don’t think I want to share my thoughts on football matters with a person like that . That’s me finished with this blog!

  • 144 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 28, 2014 at 8:27 AM

But Benny’s not a number 10, it goes back to us going ah well let’s look at what we’ve got hmmm ok that’ll do
    It’s not good enough

a good listen from last night’s total sport if people have a spare hour or two to listen

  • 146 Markaccus // Jan 28, 2014 at 8:28 AM

agree with you. Ashley is a disgusting bat fastard but wishing death on people over football is just twisted.
Also agree cabs deserves hid shot at he CL. We had plenty of time to find a replacement as we knew this would happen, but no joy because mashley is too tight.

  • 147 Himanshu Dhingra // Jan 28, 2014 at 8:29 AM

don’t have an hour. Can u put it in a couple of lines.

  • 148 Markaccus // Jan 28, 2014 at 8:30 AM

where do you see hba’s position? I don’t see him as a winger.

  • 149 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 28, 2014 at 8:30 AM

I didn’t say you could refuse him a transfer, but surely you don’t believe the like’s of JFK didn’t know this was coming after the summer
You make sure a replacement is lined up, you don’t limp through to the end of the season going that’ll do, it’s a disgraceful attitude

  • 150 Markaccus // Jan 28, 2014 at 8:31 AM

    T sage

havent got time, so could you edit it into a 10 min highlight sho with all the key points? Cheers. :D

  • 151 Transfer Sage // Jan 28, 2014 at 8:32 AM

He has played a lot of his career in the number 10 though, more on the wing but he is capable of a number ten and in my opinion (I may well be wrong) I think he’d be better there.

He has shown he can beat men in a tight space so not a huge issue there and when he gets accused of being selfish (fair at times) he often hasn’t got many passes on as stuck out wide and we get 1 or 2 in the box at most to cross….maybe in the middle he’ll have more passes around him to play?

Unless we get somebody else in it’s worth giving him a go, seeing how he does and make him feel special, tell him he can be the hero after cabaye has gone….he seems the type of lad who wants to be loved, it could re-start his career.

  • 152 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 28, 2014 at 8:32 AM

But he is a winger, were the only club to have played him as a number 10 and he was poor there, he doesn’t have the decision making to play there, the lads not switched on enough

  • 153 stan anderson // Jan 28, 2014 at 8:32 AM

Sir Alex got it right,we are a small club up north.
We fall for the same crap each season when we are fed the shit from these horrible lying SCUMBAGS.
The annoying thing is that a lot of you fools accept it.
The Mackems are now having a great time at our expense, laughing all the way to Wembley,(lose or not a great day out for them).
Just shows what can be done with a manager that has a bit knowledge of the modern game and a owner who seems to want success and will pay the money to try and achieve this.
Good luck to Cabs.we cant blame him for wanting away from this laughing stock of a football club.
You lot go on believing in the fatmans methods and see where it gets us.
We need to stop buying season tickets for a start, and shirts etc.
When he has to start selling his tickets per match on the day then he will realise that not all of us will accept being shafted as we are now.

  • 155 Spoof // Jan 28, 2014 at 8:34 AM

that is an interesting team selection, Gouffran as so many of us seem to forget is naturally a centre forward, as good as he has been on the left it would be interesting to see him in the advanced midfield role, it could well work, however Sissoko by nature is a holding midfielderso I would have him alongside Tiote rather than Anita and put Ben Arfa on his favoured right hand side, with Sissoko as a holding midfielder Benny’s wayward ways would be covered, as for the left back and left wing positions it would be 2 from Santon, Anita and Haidara, which 2 I’m not sure about, I would have to give that some thought, but like yourself I would definitely have Gouff in the middle just behind Remy, mind it would be interesting to see Gouff just behind de Jong with Remy on the left which is where Remy is at his best, lets all hope on that one.

  • 156 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 28, 2014 at 8:36 AM

Sorry but don’t agree at all, he lacks the positional sense and awareness to play there, he hasn’t played there a lot he’s always been on the left or right wing
He’s 27 mate, no coach has got him to play consistently, think your clutching at straws here mate, sorry but replacing a player of Cabayes class with HBA? Nah sorry that’s terrible

  • 157 Laurent Robert 32 // Jan 28, 2014 at 8:36 AM

Pardew will automatically now lose goals from Cabaye from his long rangers and freekicks.

We nick goals anyway, so the games will be cut even finer now.

Marveaux behind the strikers suits him best and he should be there to create for the forwards. People say he goes missing, which at times he does, but that is no different to some of the other players or the ones in bad form. Doesn’t help when he’s treated like crap after playing well and providing assists.

Those assists he provided kept us up. Product. You can defend all game for as much as you wamt, but that won’t create a good chance in the box or get you a goal.

In an attack minded team, I’m sure Marveaux woild be a lot better. His short and medium passes can be very gopd as well as creative. That’s what he should be in for, not his lack of tracking back.

  • 158 Goodfella // Jan 28, 2014 at 8:37 AM

Not a single penny will be spent on any replacements and we wont get a midfielder in the summer because we’ll need a striker to replace Remy when he is off. :( sad times ahead.

  • 159 Transfer Sage // Jan 28, 2014 at 8:37 AM

it’s just a fans phone in…i’ll sum it up once i’ve listened but the first guy said he has no time for pardew covering for his boss all the time, no time for the negative play and our poor cup runs….i’m sure some will like that comment.

it’s from last night though, before the cabaye deal

  • 160 Markaccus // Jan 28, 2014 at 8:38 AM

My problem is he is not suited to the modern premiership winger role. As i said before, they have to work hard and have defensive duties too. Hba just wont do that. I prefer to see him dribbling past people through the middle, at least if he loses it he is protected, and if he is in full flow, he can make something happen. He just needs to sort his head out.

  • 161 listie // Jan 28, 2014 at 8:42 AM

He will be a massive miss but twice now he has asked to leave, so wish him well, I do feel he will have the rest of this season playing at PSG then come the summer they will buy and he’ll be a bench warmer.

  • 162 Coach // Jan 28, 2014 at 8:43 AM

I don’t think any of us are surprised at this, and it’s good to see how many fans understand that for Cabaye, it is a move he has to make.

If the fee really is around £20 million, it’s a poor bit of business for us. Forget how much we paid for him, the important figure is how much it would cost us to replace him and it’s more than we have sold him for.

  • 163 ballerfan2 // Jan 28, 2014 at 8:51 AM

Yes I’m disappointed to see a very influential player leave. However I have supported the team through the losses of Eastham, Gazza, Waddle, and a good few more and we have survived. So I don’t feel the need to resort to adolescent comments regarding the health of our owner, manager and outgoing player among other frustration fuelled observations. The fact is that Cabaye even in his earlier days here said that his ambition was to play for his boyhood favourites PSG. Alan Shearer anyone? He passed up lots of tempting opportunities in order to play for us. I believe Cabaye has enjoyed his time here and along with many of our previous players will have many good things to say in reply to questions about NUFC. He was going soon anyway so let’s not get too down. We do need a replacement though as his influence on the team was huge.
