Newcastle Miss Their Chances In 0-0 Draw – Remy Sent Off

9:56 pm, Tuesday, January 28th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 89 Comments

Newcastle had enough chances in this game to have won the game fairly easily, and even at half time Newcastle should have been at least two goals up – and when you miss your chances you have nobody  else to blame but yourselves, although we didn’t have any luck either,  and hit both posts and the cross-bar.

Soccer - Barclays Premier League - Norwich City v Newcastle United - Carrow Road

Moussa Sissoko in action tonight

And just to make things a little bit worse Loic Remy was sent off with Bradley Johnson after 81 minutes, as the two of them had a go at each other – so now Loic Remy will miss the next three games including the derby game against Sunderland on Saturday.

And we’ve only just seen Mathieu Debuchy return to the side so Newcastle are starting to shoot themselves in the foot.

Wonder who is going to score our goals in that game – and Luuk de Jong may be given a very early debut.

It hasn’t been a good last few days for Newcastle United.

Has to be Sissoko for me. Santon a close second followed by Arfa in third. Chris Foy wins MotM for the neutrals.

  • 2 toonbrother // Jan 28, 2014 at 9:58 PM

    Three things
    1. We dropped points today precisely because we sold Cabaye . Cabaye is not only our most creative player he is arguably our most clinical finisher at this point in time!

    2. Good to see Sammy Ameobi shutting up dumb fans who at one point rated Adam Campbell and Armstrong over him.

    3. Pardumb is an utter moron. That is all

  • 3 p // Jan 28, 2014 at 9:58 PM

I think Sissoko led by example tonight. I think the players were really determined but, were just unlucky.

Very unfortunate with Remy as well, just was well DeJong should be in by the weekend. Let’s hope he is better in England than Germany.

We have to contest the red card

  • 5 p // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:00 PM

toonbrother, you have been sniffing glue.

We had many chances, woodwork 3 times, Ben Arfa blasts over the bard, good saves from the keeper. We should have been 3-o up at half time.

  • 6 Thump // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:00 PM

@toon1707: I’d hope both Newcastle and Norwich contest it. There’s no way it was a red card for both. Yellow at most.

  • 7 santonthenewmaldini // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:00 PM

We played well that first half ran out of steam it will take us a while to get used to playing without Cabaye but we played some lovely stuff Arfa still needs to learn when to pass as he was guilty of running into trouble and he needs to work on his finishing especially that tap in he had first half

Sissoko and him need to swap with Sissoko staying on the wing he is so much more effective there

Cant believe Remy got sent off hope Gouffran is back if we play like the first half we would blow Sunderland away as they are terrible like Norwich but if you dont finish your chances thats what happens

  • 9 theartfuldodger // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:01 PM

You have to say probabilities were that cabaye would have finished one of those chances.

  • 10 Ancientcoptic // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:02 PM

We didn’t have an attempt on goal after Ben Arfa left the pitch… there can be only 1 MOTM for me.

  • 11 Thump // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:03 PM

Am I the only f’ing one on this blog concerned with twenty two shots and only four on target? Seriously, that’s unacceptable. How can anybody be okay with that?

  • 12 p // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:03 PM

I see the normal nut jobs are on here tonight.

That was a good performance tonight, just very unlucky. Norwich were crap but, still, we battered them in the first half.

  • 15 Toonabroad // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:04 PM

20 shots and only 3 on target is an absolute disgrace! looks like the boys need a bit of shooting practice before the derby! apart from that i thought all the lads played well and all looked like they were out to prove that the team is just as strong without cabaye, great to see that they didn’t let their heads drop because of it!! HWTL

  • 16 Laurent Robert 32 // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:04 PM

If you don’t know how to be incisive in the final third without just taking pot shots from long range, it is a waste of time.

Apart from the usual underwhelming chance creation in the box, we played well. The players are of a very good quality, so this is no surprise.

However, playing well and still getting nil om the board, is again highlighting the lack of regular quality service going in.

  • 17 p // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:04 PM

Thump, it was one of those days.

Does that includes blocks? You have to say, Norwich did get some decent blocks in.

Cabaye may have scored one of those but so might have I! Talk about pots and F%$^ing pans!

  • 18 Graeme // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:04 PM

Whoever keeps refering to Shola Ameobi as a Striker, please stop it.
He is not a Striker, He has NEVER been a Striker, He never, ever will be a Striker.

He’s a nice bloke who sometimes gets a bit luky and the ball goes in the net. He IS NOT and NEVER, EVER, will be a Striker. We have defenders who have scored more goal than bambi ffs.

Get him out of SJP as soon as the season ends, thanks Shola, Goodbye.

  • 19 Jail for Ashley // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:05 PM

When did you start appearing on here ?

  • 20 Thump // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:05 PM

@p: You keep saying “the first half”. Yeah, we battered them: and we still didn’t catch a goal.

  • 21 Ancientcoptic // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:05 PM

I thought Sammy had a good game, but I don’t think he has proved anything yet.

He proved he has pace and can run down his channel, I think we already knew that about him.

  • 22 Transfer Sage // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:05 PM

I thought we missed that extra quality and finishing cabaye brings but others stepped up.

sissoko had his best game for a while, ben arfa looked very good and made much better decisions than he had before, we controlled the first half and better finishing and a bit of luck could have seen us with a good lead.

sammy did very well, same as early season which makes me wonder why overran suddenly got ahead of him in the pecking order.

De jong, cabella and grenier must be bought now, not the summer. we need some quality in to offer more threat and give us good options on the bench

  • 23 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:06 PM

22 shots, 3 on target we desperately need to work on our bloody finishing!
Should of been 3-0 up at half time, we ended up desperately clinging on with 10 men for a 0-0 against a woeful relegation candidate, go figure

    441toonarmydownsouth // Jan 28, 2014 at 9:58 PM

Agree losing Cabaye didn’t cost us the game but massively disagree that we didn’t or won’t miss him that much
22 shots, 16 in the first half, 2nd half we ran out of ideas, everyone started playing for themselves and not one of those lads out of Anita Sissoko Benny Sammy have the vision or that little bit of spark to see that one run and play that one ball
So aye it didn’t cost us the match, poor finishing did, but ffs if people seriously think we’ll be fine without replacing the lad there heeds need a damn good shake

  • 24 toonbrother // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:06 PM

we are doomed without cabaye . i shudder at the idea of meeting sunderland in this dreadful state

  • 25 Laurent Robert 32 // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:06 PM

Thump, I’ve been well aware of it for a very long time, don’t worry. You can see it happening and what is lacking. High shot counts dazzle people though, without digging deeper to the root cause to ask why.

  • 26 Thump // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:06 PM

@p: Does that includes blocks? You have to say, Norwich did get some decent blocks in.

Absolutely. I don’t doubt that at least 5 of those were blocked shots.

  • 27 BandB // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:07 PM

Quite recently. He’s like an old hand, isn’t he?

  • 28 Ancientcoptic // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:08 PM

Having loads of attempts with few on target, sounds like how Liverpool were when Brendan Rodgers was switching them to a more dominant style of football.

You have to start dominating before you become clinical, creating the chances is the first steps towards a good style of football.

  • 29 Shadow_Shearer // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:08 PM

  • 31 Stewin' Toon // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:09 PM

Somewhat disappointing game. We had our opportunities but didn’t capitalize, namely Ben Arfa’s miss from Ameobi. Overall we outplayed them but showed some kinks in our defense at the same time. Our back four isn’t pacey enough for fast players, we got lucky they didn’t really have any until Redmond came on. We really missed Cabaye in the middle today, but I was pleased with Samma A nonetheless. Should’ve won the match, disappointed we didn’t.

  • 32 Sir Erec // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:10 PM

    My thoughts on the match:

Not a result I’m happy with, but the performance was considerably better than I thought it would be, seeing as the mood isn’t very good with Cabaye gone.

Still amazed that we hadn’t scored a single goal after all those chances. The ratio of goal attempts to shots on target wasn’t very good this match.

Hopefully De Jong will help us finish those chances, but I won’t be holding my breath for a while as he’s been a long time without playing, let alone playing well.

Williamson did a solid job again. Some key blocks and tackles.

Glad Debuchy didn’t have a pissy fit with Cabaye not there.

And finally, we desperately need to appeal Remy’s red card. That was a woeful decision.

  • 33 nicktoon // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:10 PM

Remember we did also hot woodwork three times and had about 5 free kicks (which can always go off target.)

  • 34 Ketsbaia9 // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:10 PM

If we sell Cabaye and sign a replacement, Cabella, De Jong and start playing Sylvain Marveaux more, then that would be sufficient.

Pardew is afraid to drop Sissoko and Tiote because they are big.

  • 35 Jail for Ashley // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:12 PM

  • 36 BandB // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:12 PM

    Do you doubt it won’t?
    Of course it will be.
We are building for a Champion’s League challenge.
    That much is obvious.

  • 37 Ted Bundy // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:14 PM

Well, we’ve consolidated our detached 8th place. Get in!

Don’t understand the votes for Sissoko to be MOTM. He has all the attributes to power past people on the counter, but doesn’t believe in himself to get it done and freezes all too often.

Can only be from HBA or Sammy, in my opinion. Sammy was better 1st half, unstoppable in fact, which then meant he attracted more attention 2nd half and nearly disappeared as an offensive threat, then seemed to catch his brother’s drift when he came on and gave the ball away needlessly a couple of times. HBA had a good 1st half, picking his passes much quicker, but did blow our best chance, then really turned it on 2nd half and went on a mission, only for it to be aborted by injury.

Some great mazy dribbling from both.

    HBA – MOTM

  • 39 AaranD // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:14 PM

22 shots 3 on target is not good enough, been a problem all season. Dominating the first half isn’t good enough if it’s 0-0!!
Our two best attacking players this season wont be playing in the derby game… at least we have Shola!!

  • 40 Jail for Ashley // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:14 PM

All will be well if we beat the mackems, and two more good players sign.

  • 41 calvinho // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:15 PM

So Pardew says Cabaye money will be spent. So we will get mugged off again by signing a 8m player and the other 12m goes on his 5yr contract.

    Pardon My skepticism

  • 43 Pizzicato The Arizona Geordie // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:15 PM

Kets, I know you (and some of us) would keep yelling Marveaux to be played, but I simply think there would be reasons behind all these. Marveaux’s body build? Stamina? Playing style? All these would count. It’s just like Kagawa is not fielded by Moyes. It’s bad, but it’s the manager’s choice.

  • 47 JP...from The Rock // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:16 PM

Some need reminding that this is our first match without our key player Cabaye and created bag full of chances.

The first time Sammy starts and played brilliantly.

HBA started and did very well for the whole game apart from that dreadful miss and wasn’t selfish at all.

Gouffran was injured and we missed him coming off the bench instead of the useless Strolla! (God I hate that man!)

Anita played from the start and looked solid throughout, not spectacular but solid.

Sissoko also plaed in the middle and did a fine job at that, compared to all his other games there.

..and we hit the post 3 times :/

Many positives to take from the game, the only thing missing was the 3 points sadly :(

What I can say we missed from Cabaye was his free kicks and we need a specialist -remember his corners always sucked and Santon’s were better than his today.

  • 48 Jail for Ashley // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:17 PM

That’s what I thought, TDsarf by any chance !

  • 49 Laurent Robert 32 // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:17 PM

The woodwork hits were from individual skill, not calculated team play creating a teammate a chance in the box.

Hatem missed his shot, but the point is, if you give him 6 of a similar chance he’ll get on or two. That is of 6 quality balls INSIDE the box, not 20 from outside, which is relying on individual shooting.

It needs to be a LOT more inside the box. That takes careful and intelligent management, which is where Pardew falls woefully short.

  • 50 p // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:17 PM

have to say, a motm would have scored that opportunity that HBA had

HBA was a lot better tonight, he looked hungry but he does need to start delivering

  • 51 OhSholaAmeobi // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:17 PM

It won’t be overturned. The reason being both players were sent off for being aggressive, not the supposed headbutt.
I doubt very much we’d appeal.

Imperative we bring in some players with attacking prowess to give us more guile and imagination and more so than anything to boost morale.
(not that that includes Altidore Mk2 Luuk De Jong though I can’t write him off till he plays)

  • 52 manxpie // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:18 PM

bloody annoying game like all round!!
i hope we appeal against the red all remy did was protect himself
great to see sammi have a good game plus arfa, sissko and another shout out to willo who on the very rare occasion he was needed did his job

22 shots tho and only 3 on target is shocking but i suppose its a good sign in a way

and as for people calling for pardew to make subs please tell me who did he have to bring on exactly!!??
that great attacker gosling or maybe mbiwa or dummet yeah they’d change the game in an attacking sense!??

  • 53 joeinthecheapseats // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:18 PM

Marveaux isn’t the answer can’t play more than 10 minutes and doesn’t look like he will ever win a tackle
Might be worth sticking on the bench if we need to get back into a game in the second half at best

  • 54 Jail for Ashley // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:19 PM

    pawl 90210 ?

  • 55 Ginger // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:19 PM

Appalling substitutions by Pardew today. Saying that there was nobody on the bench that could make an impact.

Where was Marveux? Hell I would have even took Obertan today.

Personally I hope Shola does not get signed for another year. Any defender that has an ounce of strength or height dominates him in the air. Considering that’s his main ability it’s just not good enough. Honestly would have rather had Armstrong on, can’t be much worse.

Didn’t see the point of taking off Sammy for Haidara. He was one of our best players, plus it cancelled out any attacks down the left side.

  • 56 Graeme // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:20 PM

  • 57 USAGEORDIE // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:20 PM

Who does everyone have at ST this weekend? Some say Shola but de Jong could be ready and maybe Cisse would benifit with a start. Personally, I hope we get to see de Jong!

  • 58 p // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:22 PM

    Marveux, the new messiah.

  • 59 toonbrother // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:26 PM

Marveaux is our only hope. unfortunately Pardumb;s extinguished that too

  • 60 JP...from The Rock // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:27 PM

Ginger – Obvously it’s because Sammy had just bust a nut playing his first game from the start and was exhausted. And of those complaining about the subs there was no real attackers on our bench due to injuries. Those calling for Marveaux, yeah I would have put him on the bench ahead of Dummet perhaps, though maybe Marvs attitude stinks like shite and that’s why he’s never getting on. Haidara was played by Pardew as he could offer something defensively and burst forward with pace.

The only issue I have with our subs was bring the pathetic Strolla on again ffs! He NEVER contributes unless it’s a derby, and that’s if we’re lucky ‘he’s in the mood’ – the laziest and luckiest ‘footballer’ to ever grace the game of football. I would have preferred Armstrong ahead of him any day and I never seen him play but I already know he’s better than Strolla ffs. Please get rid asap!

  • 61 AaranD // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:27 PM

Mitroglu (Olympiakos) in talks with Fulham, valued at £12.5 million by his own team. Very surprising seen as though he only just signed a new deal.

Hope we get De Jong signed and done tomorrow as we need him for the weekend. And the money from Cabaye should go on buying two players. None of this wages comes into it nonsense, £20 million on transfers has to be done.

  • 62 gazzaforever // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:29 PM

Solid and unlucky performance, HBA MOTM , put him CAM and he ll do more damage, i prefer sissoko cdm than anita who doesnt create nor defend very well, good game overall.

  • 63 Ted Bundy // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:29 PM

Anita has taken a bit of flak from some, probably as a result of some people not getting over Cabaye and feeling the need to take it out on the player who people see as most similar to him. Like Cabaye didn’t have some terrible games, particular last season, where his radar was completely out of kilter. Much worse than Anita’s tonight.

He was great in the opening 20, setting our tempo and zipping passes into feet and that early hit down the line to Debuchy was an excellent pass. He gave us a platform. Then, he bobbed along for the rest of that half, doing the simple things well and closing down in his typical scampering style. Didn’t have the best of second-halves, but still endeavoured, was just too anxious trying to force the issue as the game wore on, but all of our players aside from HBA and Remy fell away in the 2nd half.

  • 64 Pizzicato The Arizona Geordie // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:29 PM

Wages shouldn’t be a factor in how we spend the Cabaye fee. We’ve offloaded Jonas to Norwich, who must be paying a fair chunk of his wage, if not all of it and he was apparently a fairly big earner by our standards, I’d guess around 40-50kpw, added to Cabaye’s 40kpw, that should cover any recruit’s wages, give or take a little.

  • 71 JP...from The Rock // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:34 PM

I say either HBA or Sammy M.O.M. Considering this was Sammy’s first EPL start this season was very impressed by his overall contribution and neat touches. He just needs to find consistency. How lucky are we he is so much better than his older brother.

  • 72 geordieboy83 // Jan 28, 2014 at 10:34 PM

Wow people complaining about that performance lol. We knock the ball about and it’s pointless tippy tally footy, we play it long and it’s pointless hoofball, don’t have any shots we are negative, have 20 shots but we don’t create them they are hit and hopes outside the box, let’s give youngsters a try, why the hell is he playing sammi. We never create chances but our finishing is terrible, which is it as it can’t be both.

I genuinely believe we could win the league and people would complain coz we didn’t get 100 points, score 100 goals etc. haway man it’s so boring

Also thought it was a toss up between Sissoko, Williamson and Debuchy for MOTM.

Remy seriously needs to pass and Ben Arfa in my opinion was not as effective as he normally he is. Probably as he was not match fit.

As for Marveaux ramblings I’ve heard he is injured…. How much truth their is in that not sure was speaking to lads at the match!

Still worried about the derby no remy or cabaye. gouffran and cisse best man up as I doubt de jong will be match fit due to him mainly running up and down the sideline all season. I hope pardew is right about the money and both cabella and grenier sign in time for the scum!

Tomorrow is de Jong’s medical then…okay, let’s see if he’s the only one through the door and ‘over the line’ this week. He will surprise a few I believe and he might get the baptism of fire in the derby. He could get overwhelmed by the crazy derby atmosphere or he will love it and thrive on it. I think it’s the latter as he’s been dying for games and that will be one of the biggest of his career.

JP, your endless sado-sexual Shola fetishizing makes for uncomfortable reading. He was in the pitch for 15 minutes, you’ve probably spent twice that time fantasizing on here about what a naughty boy he is.

Cabaye was not on that much. From my last gander it was 35k.

Jonas however was one of our highest earners, more like 55-60k ….. Along with Coloccini he signed on big wages and only took a small deduction since. Would suggest we will paying some opposed to Norwich paying it all.

De Jong medical in the morning. Seems certain go through give our striker scenario.

Personally was but disappoint Armstrong didn’t get on when Haidara was put on over Sammy. We should have went for the game, perhaps 11 v 10 I would understand but we clearly were the better side and thought he could have pushed for the goal.

Motm was IMO HBA. Some of his passing was sublime. We deserved more than a draw but we were not clinical. We did however create opportunities but I cannot help but feel we need more of a cutting edge in the top of the park. We need a outright CAM. It will be a travesty if monies are not spent now to replace the void of Cabaye. They knew he was likely to leave so no excuses. I really do not care about paying a little over the odds this window. If we r not prepared to do that then we should not have sold Cabs in the 1st place.

So Alan Pardew indicated that money for Cabaye would be spent in remainder of window.

Did anyone have any doubt it would’nt be?

I didn’t and don’t begrudge it being lodged behind the bar at the Orange Tree (that is Ashley and Kinnear’s local isn’t it?). It will be put to good use behind the bar and allow them to pat themselves on the back for managing yet another highly successful transfer window.

Reviewing their roles in the January window, they can plan their strategy for the summer and our assault on the ECL next year!

Boater – He has been shite ever since Sir Bobby gave him his debut. I’ve been praying to the heavens and Sir Bobby to take him far away from this club for more than 10 years now as he’s obviously nowhere near good enough for our bench let alone our first team. Heck not even Championship quality. Can’t stand him, but yeah I will stop now or else I’ll go bald just thinking about it lol

Can’t wait till we completely change our strikers in the summer, it will be exciting and a huge boost to the team’s way of playing. de Jong will be a good signing I feel, maybe he’ll need time to settle but he’ll be real good in the long run I reckon.

Ok don’t kill me I’m guessing overall we played very well tonight but didn’t finish. To be honest how many teams are in this position i.e. 8th lost three on the bounce then a draw away in the premiership and still there and three points behind Man U we are still 5 points clear of Southampton I think overall we are doing quite well compared to last year. Cabaye gone but we need to be more positive this teams been going for a long time to many negative things said on forums about the team the management etc. Get behind them and things might change I’m sure may be wrong but if somebody kept publically slagging you off for your job you would get miffed and go somewhere else. All I’m trying to say is support the team NUFC is a fantastic club and I don’t do forums very often. Any way a happy new year to you all and I hope we stuff Sunderland on Sat 3-0 and De Jong to score two if he allowed to play. “Can only dream” p.s don’t get on here very often Haway the lads
