Luuk de Jong is expected to have his medical at Newcastle today, after he jetted into Newcastle airport last night to sign for the Tyneside club on loan for the rest of the season – but Newcastle are also aggressively trying to sign 23 year-old Clement Grenier before Friday’s transfer deadline.
Clement Grenier – Lyon midfielder
And Alan Pardew is pushing Joe Kinnear and Secretary Lee Charnley to move in quickly for Newcastle’s top target Clement Grenier, and put in an improved all cash offer for the 23 year-old Lyon play-maker – since time is short.
Alan had mentioned last night at Carrow Road after the game, that he hoped to have good news from Joe Kinnear today – so we have to hope Lyon will accept the bid from Newcastle, which the Chronicle (Lee Ryder) is reporting this morning.
And presumably it will be an increase on the £10M bid they submitted, at least that initial bid was reported in the French press over the weekend.
Grenier has said if the club gets a decent offer for him, their President Jean-Michel Aulas has told him he will consider it, and the lad certainly seems keen to join Newcastle.
If we can get Clement Grenier and Luuk in before Friday night, that would be good, given the position we are in late in this transfer window.
What do you think?
Personal note – my wife Madeline has to have some minor surgery today, so I will be out of commission for some periods today – I hope I miss the announcement that we’ve signed both Luuk de Jong and Clement Grenier. 😀

Comment #1Fingers crossed on this one, however, if we don’t get a midfielder in, I still think we are well stocked till the end of the season anyway. We certainly don’t need Charlie Adam.

surely the Charlie Adam link was a wind-up, however this lad looks a good player, on the previous thread Geese put a link on about him, its well worth a read, he has plenty to learn but he could turn into something special, I really do hope that we get him.

Comment #4Talksport last night suggested it, and twitter went a bit mad with Charlie Adam rumour. I certainly don’t hope, or think for that matter, that there is any truth to it.

Comment #6It would be great if we could get LDJ plus 1 or 2 others in before the window closes, but being realistic about it, it has taken us 29 days to get a lad over to Newcastle for a medical on a loan deal. A lad we were first rumoured to be inquiring about for a loan in November…. 2 more in less than 3 days? We will see.
On a different note, anyone heard how bad the injuries to Goofy and Cisse are? Are they fit for Saturday??
Someone also mentioned LDJ being a prolific scorer, he isn’t really. He is a second striker. He managed 41 goals in 89 league games in Holland. In comparison, a similar aged striker at a similar Dutch club, Altidore managed 23 in 33 last season, and 16 in 34 the year before, so 39 in 64. He has hardly set the Prem alight. I like him, but he will be someone to bring in others and chip in with the odd goal rather than our main goal threat.
Also, for someone who is getting knocked for his aerial ability, a third of his career goals have been with his head.

it was reported on Sky, they are usually quite accurate, but we shouldn’t get carried away as so many bids get turned down, putting a bid in doesn’t mean a great deal, not until it is accepted, then you build your hopes up.

Comment #10I’m glad we seem to be making moves but still disappointed as other teams always say let us find a replacement first before we sell.
On the game yesterday, Sammy looked really good as did HBA….why didnt Percy play such an attacking line up when Cabaye was here? Personally feel both Sammy and HBA created more chances than Sissoko and Gouff would have.
Remy, well he’s a silly boy really, raise your hands and you will get sent off….Stupid. As an attacking threat Remy looked better cutting inside from the left and shooting.
No doubt the Mackem Slayer will play on Saturday which would be a shame, he offered nothing when he came on. Percy please put Marv on the bench, he has to be a better option than Haidara off the bench. How much did we miss Cabaye at dead balls and his shooting from outside the box

The cynical side of me says they knew a bid would come for cabaye so they held up deals until he left to make us remember the in comings more than the out goings?
Probably rubbish and me being cynical, but that’s what Ashley has done to me.

Everyone seems upbeat on here today… :-p
I thought it was nice Pardew was forced to name an attacking line-up last night as it shows how the best way to dominate a game like this is to attack it. I cant remember us creating as many chances as that first half in a long time.
Sadly we didnt have our finishing boots on, the worst miss being ben arfa’s from sammy’s cut back, I think most would have fancied him to bury that one. The main issue for me is we looked pretty impotent 2nd half and gave Norwich chances to steal the win!
Sammy for me was the stand out player in the first half, Norwich couldnt get near him, such a skillful player for a big lad. If he could pull his consitency issues together he could be a really good player.
I thought everyone did well. I wish we could tell our full backs to stop shooting all the time though, we seem obsessed with taking speculative long shots, when we have the quality on the pitch to pass it around and create chances.
I thought Hatem was a mixed bag as usual really, showed he can be less selfish and create for others as well as illustrating that he still can be too selfish at times. Overall a solid performance though.
The rest of the team looked good, Remy could have had a few goals and although i know its a strikers perogative i wish he would look for the pass more. He is such a one trick pony cutting in from the left of the box and bending it far post (similar to benny on the right). There was one situation where sammy played it into remy and continued his run into the box practically unmarked but remy cut in for the shot and it was blocked. We have a great collective group of players and im optimistic it could gel if we play in an attack focused manner.
I think something that needs to be noted though is that in the last two games the opposition in the first half of each game have been about as poor as you will see in the premier league. West Hams defending was tragic last week and Norwich were bystanders in the first half yesterday.
I dont think we missed Cabaye at all although im sure others will disagree.

I’m not too sure about that, I can’t see the club inventing these rumours in an attempt to appease the fans, the impression I get is that the club couldn’t care less about the fans so why would they try appease us when they just don’t care ?

Yeah, you could be right, trying to make the fans look the other way as they usher a star player out of the back door. Certainly isn’t beyond the realms of possibility with this lot.
But given the trouble we had with Aulas in the summer I think that negotiations should have been going on, even in private to discuss what figure would get him, what wages he may require etc so that once the bid for Cabaye came then it was a simple case of offering the figures that had been discussed so everything ran smoothly.
Things running smoothly may well be beyond the realms of possibility at Newcastle United though…..

“He is known for his technical ability, dribbling, and free-kick taking. Grenier can play on the right side of midfield, as well as in the attacking midfield position just behind the striker. This story looks promising tbf, Sky saying we’ve put in a significant bid and Jean-Michel Aulas had said if they got a decent bid they would be prepared to do business this window
IF and it’s still a big if, we manage to pull this transfer off then fair play to the board for getting a replacement in the same window for once, still think we need another signing on top to keep us pushing the league and improving the squad but at least it’s a start

Comment #27Remy dint deserve a red. He has not tried to hurt the player.
Perhaps Pardew wants to keep him suspended to show the ones above him that reinforcements are needed. I know its diabolical but thers a good chance of the card being reduced to yellow.
I wouldnt get my hopes up on a bid. Wait for the news of a medical.

I agree with you, no one dislikes Ashley more than I, basically all I was saying is that I believe that the Grenier bid will be true and not a sham solely because Ashley imo would never try to do anything which is done for the sole purpose of appeasing us, I just don’t think he gives a toss about us. So as a result I do feel that they are genuinely trying to get Grenier.

Comment #32If we get Grenier, De Jong and maybe someone else, maybe a younger fringe player, we can argue that this has been a good window.
Grenier, once settled is arguably a player of the same quality as Cabaye, but younger with more upside. His freekicks are better then Cabaye’s for sure.

Comment #33I would love to see this Guy on Saturday BUT I think we all know under The fat Controller and JFK were probably not going to get anyone apart from De Jong .. Were not in any cups and in a Europa competition and not going to be relegated so fat mikes attitude is Alan pardew has enough Fire power to keep us up.. We have a decent defence now. Midfielders are Good enough and the strikers with Lukke will be ok … Don’t get me wrong I want this lad an Cabbella in This week aswell .

Comment #35Grenier is fairly tall and seems a bit simlar to Gerrard and Kaka. Cabaye only had 1 good game in his first season and was poor last season. He has improved vastly this season. Marveaux outshone him last season, but for some reason he can’t get in the squad ahead of Sammi and Gosling.

Comment #37It would be interesting to know what the bid is, I could be wrong but did the club not say that we would be quite this window and would only sign someone if it was a really good deal for us ( which means cheap ) so if thats the case then Grenier would be a surprise as players as good as him are rarely sold on the cheap, or have they altered their outlook due to the sale of Cabaye.

Contact does not matter once your raise your hands or put your to another’s by the letter of the law it is a red card no matter how right or wrong that is
Johnson’s reaction was comical and you can tell by the way he got straight back up he knew it had backfired
The FA will never in a month of Sundays over turn that decision, appealing the decision would result in the FA deeming it frivolous and earn Remy an additional one game suspension
To suggest its to prove a point is ludicrous tbh next you’ll be saying pards told him to nut him!

it clearly states that raising a hand is an automatic red card. Remy deserved his red as his push was aggressive and so was Johnson’s. Percy said he’d of sent him off as well.
Will be interesting to see if we can pull the Grenier deal off, my concern is that Arsenal wanted the kid in the summer now every man and his dog knows we are bidding for
