Luuk de Jong is expected to have his medical at Newcastle today, after he jetted into Newcastle airport last night to sign for the Tyneside club on loan for the rest of the season – but Newcastle are also aggressively trying to sign 23 year-old Clement Grenier before Friday’s transfer deadline.
Clement Grenier – Lyon midfielder
And Alan Pardew is pushing Joe Kinnear and Secretary Lee Charnley to move in quickly for Newcastle’s top target Clement Grenier, and put in an improved all cash offer for the 23 year-old Lyon play-maker – since time is short.
Alan had mentioned last night at Carrow Road after the game, that he hoped to have good news from Joe Kinnear today – so we have to hope Lyon will accept the bid from Newcastle, which the Chronicle (Lee Ryder) is reporting this morning.
And presumably it will be an increase on the £10M bid they submitted, at least that initial bid was reported in the French press over the weekend.
Grenier has said if the club gets a decent offer for him, their President Jean-Michel Aulas has told him he will consider it, and the lad certainly seems keen to join Newcastle.
If we can get Clement Grenier and Luuk in before Friday night, that would be good, given the position we are in late in this transfer window.
What do you think?
Personal note – my wife Madeline has to have some minor surgery today, so I will be out of commission for some periods today – I hope I miss the announcement that we’ve signed both Luuk de Jong and Clement Grenier. 😀

Comment #41ToonkKing, bearing in mind other windows have been a shambles, even if we do sign them, it doesn’t patch over Ashley’s very poor ‘ambition’.

Comment #42I read last night this bid was 8.5 million. Only 6.5 under the reported asking price. Lol
If they were that serious about signing him, they would have got him in before accepting Psgs offer.
Now everybody knows we’ve 20 million in the bank.

Comment #45its really simple – the kid looks class, just go to Lyon with £16m in cash, and take both Grenier and Gomis!!
But as we all know, expect the usual tripe to be spouted come Friday night, when players were unavailable or cudnt get over line!! No excuses this time, not one!!

The reports this morning are that the bid is significant and higher than the rumoured earlier fee
Also the price tag apparently seen as acceptable by OL is €13 mil so if we bid say £11 mil i reckon they would accept that

Comment #48The undisclosed amount seems a bit fishy when it has come after we have selling Cabaye. Will Ashley just low-ball Lyon, they reject, and we say we’ve put in a “substantial bid” which wasn’t accepted. Ultimately, signing nobody. We’ll find out soon enough.

I always thought raising a hand means hitting out and trying to cause harm. Its ridiculous to get sent off for a push.
Barton has held the collar many times. I suppose thats not raising hands.
Anyways if thats the rule then no point appealing.

We also know that we’re good at putting in failed bids for players and ending up with nothing. I just hope him and Cabella sign.

yeh for a club who claims to always want good deals then never seem to have things mapped out in advance, always talk about getting their heads together after each window opens…would make more sense for things to start earlier (they might, just doesn’t seem it from the quotes)
I’d like to see them push the boat out for cabella and grenier.

Its down to interpretation I think and the ref instantly decided Remy was to be shown the red because of Johnsons reaction then the linesman told him it Johnson was the aggressor
Ref would have to admit the mistake which he wont do

Comment #59With or without the new players, it’s just deflating to know that we have no real idea of how to play as a team in the final third…. where it matters.
It’s like having Usain Bolt in a three legged race with Joe Kinnear as his partner, with Pardew and Ashely in charge of ‘ambition’.

raising hands/or anything, to a persons face or head is a read, shoving is usually a yellow if the chest.
the fact their heads came together means that even tough there was barely contact the FA wont over turn it.

That would be the sensible way to do business.
I agree, getting those 2 in would make the squad look stronger than when the window started. I’m not sure how much of the benefit we would feel this season, potentially issues with settling in straight away as we saw with one or two last year, but then they would be ready for next season. As this season is virtually over for us, outside chance of Europe, but nothing more really, then building for next should be the aim now.
I would have still liked a permanent centre forward signing, but that is not an option now realistically.

Comment #67I love how cynical we are about our transfer dealings. We have signed some really good players under MA. Yes we haven’t always got it right timing wise but we have a very talented healthy squad. Most people are of te belief this is the best squad we have had since SBR. Its Disappointing to lose a key player but it happens to every team! I think without Cabaye we can still have a good end to the season.
Adding players to the squad is almost always a bonus but Personally I would be happy to wait till the summer. Not saying I wouldn’t welcome any of our supposed main targets in Cabella, Grenier and LDJ. Id rather we took a bit of an evaluation on the current squad and chopped those who are no longer wanted by the club. Then added quality not quantity in the summer. Im optimistic we will have a good summer transfer window!…neck on the line :-p

yeh it is a building process, not pushing on with the sale of cabaye happening.
I don’t get why we don’t go for gomis, if we wanted him enough to pay 8 mil in the summer why don’t we get him tied up now, even a pre contract to sign in the summer on a free.

Comment #69Our squad was desperately short of at least five players when Mikey had a rush of blood and brought in five French men, althought five have been bought in and a loan, now Simpson, Perch, Ba, Guiterez and now Cabaye have gone the other way, is this really building a squad or are we still five short.

Comment #71After all the wailings about losing out to Norwich for Wolfswinkel I was eager to see what so many fans had said was a lost opportunity by JFK to buy him. Well he was rubbish. What a startling comparison between him and Remy.
I know some people are saying Luuk isn’t up to much but his current club must have seen something in him to buy him not so long ago.

looking at our bench last night I would say that we are still 5 short, well at least 4 as we now have LDJ, but come the summer with LDJ and Remy it will be at least 6, so it could be argued that we are actually going backwards in terms of squad depth ?

While I don’t and have never wanted Gomis, I honestly don’t rate him from the numerous games I have seen him play, I get your point. It does seem very odd that a player available for half the fee we offered in the summer is no longer wanted by s despite no arrivals since the bid.
Maybe the club will look at a double bid for him and Grenier £15million for both maybe. Lyon will be getting desperate to offload Gomis rather than miss out on a fee by not selling him this window. It would allow us to offer more for Grenier and ensure that Lyon get at least some return on Gomis. Is Kinnear capable of that though?

Comment #76So a 13 million euros bid got turned down at the weekend, shows we actually had a plan for Cabs leaving as I doubt we would just spend if no cash was coming in.
Hopefully this new substantially higher bid is on the money just like PSGs was for Cabs!

I like LDJ, but I think a lot of people will be very disappointed if they are hoping for a very prolific scorer. He has an average record in the Dutch league, worse than Altidore, and nowhere near the standards of players like Bony, Alfonso Alves, Kuyt and other such players that were prolific in Holland. He will chip in with goals, but he will be more of a second striker for someone to play off.

i’m of the same view, don’t think he looks a great player but obviously the club do if they bid 8mil in the summer, if true.
unless they have heard that other, better targets will be available in the summer, hence the loan of de jong, get him to prove himself and also give us some freedom if one of our better targets is available then.

Comment #80TS:
So you dont think we have a good squad? I dont think its top 6 yet, but with 3-5 quality players it would be definitely up there. Imo and its only my opinion we clearly want to use wingers so we need two naturally footed wingers, two strikers not on loan (one of which we seem to need/want to be a bit of a target beast) and A big powerful CB capable of replacing Willo.
I think we have a hell of a lot of options in Midfield.
Sissoko, Anita, Tiote, Bigi, Gosling, Abeid, Vuckic, Marv, Jonas, HBA, Sammy, Gouff (forward cover too) Obertan.
I would like to see the likes of bigi, abeid, vuckic, sammy and even gosling given more chances. If not why dont we just get rid? Thats the bigger issue for me the lack of movement out which would suggest we still see something in them. The problem is when they play they tend to play all together (in cups). The way to bring them through is to rotate them in amongst the best 11 players.
