Cabaye – It Was Great – I Had A Fabulous Time At Newcastle

2:02 pm, Thursday, January 30th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 125 Comments

Yohan Cabaye has given another interview in France, and he has some very nice words to say about Newcastle United.

an cabaye psg

Yohan Cabaye – at PSG for his unveiling yesterday

The interview has been translated by The Mag – and we are taking a little piece that translation – and altering it just a little bit – it seems an excellent interview.

Here’s some of what Yohan said:

“First of all I have spent two and a half great years at Newcastle.” They allowed me to discover the Premier League and to also have a good time and for that I wish to thank all the staff and the coach too.”

“I was at a good club in a good team, but the Premier League is so difficult that we have struggled to get to the Champions League.” “The first season, we were very close and then last year it was a lot more complicated but we had an agreement.”

“Last summer I could not leave, but the opportunity came this winter and they respected the agreement that we had.” “For that it is a big thank you towards them and I will not forget my two and a half years spent there.”

“It was great and I had a fabulous time.”

We were expecting Yohan to say some good things about his time at Newcastle, once he got the turmoil of being introduced at PSG over and done with.

Comments welcome.

Cant blame you for leaving fella….. Just hope we spend your money on replacements !

  • 2 Himanshu Dhingra // Jan 30, 2014 at 2:06 PM

    Who will score for us?

    Remy Suspended.

    Gouff injured

    Cabaye gone.

  • 3 Phatoon // Jan 30, 2014 at 2:08 PM

HD, 1 or more of the 10 outfield players on the pitch……..

    Debuchy for example.

  • 4 Bambams // Jan 30, 2014 at 2:08 PM

Bid made yesterday, Pardew not giving anything away… Nothing official but bid still on the table (which means its a waiting game and we wont increase)…

All for probably 2 million more we are waiting ! Premier league !

Ash you chose to sell, replace him you …..

  • 5 The_Toon // Jan 30, 2014 at 2:10 PM

    All the best to him.
    Replacement please.
Remy’s appeal should go through – would it have been a sending off if Johnson stayed on his feet?

  • 6 JAMSHA // Jan 30, 2014 at 2:11 PM

wish i was rich enough i would give the rest 2 fkn mil to that mafia to increase the bid

  • 7 Himanshu Dhingra // Jan 30, 2014 at 2:11 PM

    fingers crossed

I hear that our bid for Grenier has not been rejected and talks are still on going, Pardew is confident we can get him.

  • 9 Bambams // Jan 30, 2014 at 2:12 PM

Pards has not helped with the appeal by his comments that there was enough for the ref to send them off.

  • 10 Toon Tang // Jan 30, 2014 at 2:13 PM

like the murphy’s, im not bitter.

  • 11 asenski // Jan 30, 2014 at 2:13 PM

read somewhere the president of grenier said no1 leaving
pards says he is confident on a deal
it seems pardew is far away from the things joke kinnear and mashley are doing
i bet on no transfers of grenier or de jong and in a copule of games we are 10-11th

  • 12 Transfer Sage // Jan 30, 2014 at 2:15 PM

Was a good lad, the refusing to play wasn’t great but i don’t trust our club on that, never put anything past them. Hope he does well.

As Ashley chose to sell cabs he needs to replace him right now, and with somebody who can make an impact, not somebody who might replace him after 2 years of football.

  • 13 Toon Tang // Jan 30, 2014 at 2:17 PM

jamsha , same here mate, lets club together and push this deal through hahaa

  • 14 Beattie25 // Jan 30, 2014 at 2:20 PM

“I was at a good club in a good team, but the Premier League is so difficult that we have struggled to get to the Champions League.”

That must be the empty promise made to our players.

  • 15 Ben3arfa // Jan 30, 2014 at 2:20 PM

I get that Siem De Jong is a good player and is available but how is he a replacement for Cabaye? Hes more like a second striker who can drop deep rather than a playmaker.

Grenier is obviously the more sensible option even more than Cabella who I see as a show pony to be honest.

I still think we aint gone sign diddly squat though

  • 16 MrMojoRisin76 // Jan 30, 2014 at 2:21 PM

There was talk last season that Jabba wasn’t happy with Pardew and was maybe looking to sack him,and we know something happened between them but not what.If he offered his resignation it would be accepted straight away, then he wouldn’t have the job he loves, what would be the point in that?and can you post some links about Pardew’s wages if it is widely reported please?,would be interesting.

Dunno how but i have found some faith!!! i think it was because i had a dream that we signed siem de jong and cabella and luuk de jong scores two against the mackems on his debut in a 3-1 win and then to top it all of joe kinnear has a heart attack after the stress of doing some work and signing two players and has to resign from his position. 🙂

it was a good dream i woke up with an erection!!!!

  • 20 Toon Tang // Jan 30, 2014 at 2:28 PM

beattie, tbf to the lad if we had won a couple more of those games against ‘shitter’ opposition we would have done. Mad to think what would have happened the seaon after if we did get chumps league instead of europa. Would we have spent and reinforced – will let you be the judge of that one

  • 21 MrMojoRisin76 // Jan 30, 2014 at 2:30 PM

Cheers sage,i wouldn’t take that article at face value anyway,as soon as i saw the words”is believed to be on” and “a reliable source close to” i stopped reading.

  • 22 Transfer Sage // Jan 30, 2014 at 2:31 PM

I had a dream last night I was camping in Australia and had to fight and kill a pink and blue spider…….does that mean anything?

I’m going to presume it means the mackem slayer will return to put the unwashed to the sword.

  • 23 Ancientcoptic // Jan 30, 2014 at 2:33 PM

So… Cabaye gets an agreement he will be sold, to stop him refusing to play… basically told go out perform and you will get your move – what do you know, he starts playing out of his skin. Why was he not motivated enough to play like that last season?

Let PSG deal with his blues next season, after playing in an international tournament…

Quote from Cabaye after playing in EURO 2012:

“My season was long in a league where the pace is higher than in Le Championnat. I started with Newcastle early in July 2011 and finished late in June 2012 and, for the very first time, I didn’t have any winter break so then to resume in July 2012, it was very difficult. Maybe it is difficult to start again after a big competition such as the Euros, but my body didn’t allow me to do what I wanted to do.

“On a morning when I woke up, I could still feel tiredness. I wanted to think about something else rather than football.”

  • 24 Transfer Sage // Jan 30, 2014 at 2:33 PM

there were a few more but all worded similarly….not sure how accurate they are but heard the 400k figure a lot, TV too…not that it makes it true but seems to be common

  • 25 corkypants85 // Jan 30, 2014 at 2:33 PM

Sage:-seperate spiders or the same spider with two colours

It could make a world of difference

  • 26 stuart no9 // Jan 30, 2014 at 2:39 PM

Haha pardew never fails does he ? First he thinks the ref is right to send remy off , then he changes his mind And now going to appeal against it , in the fortunate position of nufc manager , but couldn’t manage an erection . What a plonker , wonder what the 3 wise men’s plan are now ?

  • 27 Transfer Sage // Jan 30, 2014 at 2:40 PM

    same with two colours

it was a brown fury spider which flared up into the two colours when i hit it…possibly it’s blood, then it’s severed head was lodged in my hand biting me.

I woke up after that part. Is it good or bad news? And just send me the bill for this dream analysis.

  • 28 theartfuldodger // Jan 30, 2014 at 2:46 PM

  • 29 corkypants85 // Jan 30, 2014 at 2:47 PM

    Get French Football ?@GFN_France
RMC: According to internal sources at Newcastle, Clement Grenier has rejected the club’s approach they say. More shortly. #OL #NUFC

    great work

  • 35 Transfer Sage // Jan 30, 2014 at 2:56 PM

them two would be able to convince messi and ronaldo to sign for £20

or possibly convince us all we have signed them

  • 36 seanufc79 // Jan 30, 2014 at 2:57 PM

Im not being a hater, BUT we have been in this position before. We sell a big player and get told that they have replacements in mind and pardew saying we will have to buy…then what happens?

we have bid a ‘substantial’ amount for Grenier?? have we really?? why are Lyon reluctant to respond to their offer and the reason being its nowhere near their valuation..

Look how quickly PSG moved on Cabaye once a bid was made…I know what is around the corner, we will be linked with a couple of players, put in small bids then its to late and their excuse will be ”we tried but couldnt get them in”. BUT we have the quality in our team now to succeed…..its a load of bull

  • 37 mag // Jan 30, 2014 at 2:57 PM

If this Grenier is so good then PSG should have signed him instead of Cabaye as he’s younger and cheaper but is he any good?

Did you never see Fumaca play?

  • 46 seanufc79 // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:05 PM

It took Cabaye a season to adjust to the EPL, Grenier is one that could do what cabaye did at newcastle BUT we need to get him first. I do not trust Ashley and Kinnear as a team in the transfer market. why do we never close a deal quickly??

  • 47 MrMojoRisin76 // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:06 PM

Do you have to fail a sanity test to be a manager/owner in French football or is it just a coincidence we have to deal with these nutters when we want to buy a player from there?

  • 48 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:07 PM

TS…Please God enough of this reference to Shola as the Mackem Slayer!

…one need to score goals to be a slayer! He cannot still live on past credentials (if there ever was any…)

  • 49 MrMojoRisin76 // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:07 PM

I think it’s because Monaco want him but not til the end of the season so looks like he’ll be going there in the summer. What i have read anyways.

  • 50 mag // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:08 PM

Same old crap coming out of the club, first we’re fed a load of cobblers by the oaf Kinnear that nobody’s leaving then Cabaye is gone then 4 new signings are on the way and only De Jong lands. The only Kinnear quote that was funny was about Sunderland when he said I once spent a terrible week there one night.

  • 51 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:08 PM

Lilongwe… 😀 fair enough I haven’t seen him play; but could it really be any worse than Obertan?

  • 52 BandB // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:08 PM

I had the chance to spend some in Obertan’s company. At first I thought he was shy, then realized he was aloof. He thinks he is some player, as you can see by his narked reactions to being substituted after hapless performances.
If ever there was a man who would stubbornly sit out his contract, it is him

  • 53 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:10 PM

Terrible move for Ince if he goes to Monaco. Will end up in a similar position to Sinclair at City.

  • 54 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:11 PM

BandB…dear lord! so basically we are stuck with him (Pardew that’s why you are not allowed to buy players 😉 lol)

  • 55 MrMojoRisin76 // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:12 PM

By the sounds of it we are appealing the Remy ban because we think 3 matches is excessive,1 match would have been enough.

  • 56 BandB // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:12 PM

I think he will be difficult to shift, for all sorts of reasons.

  • 57 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:14 PM

Does the Webster ruling work the other way around as well?

…when can we buy out Obertans contract?

  • 58 Sazzer // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:16 PM

PSG need the best player for their CL run this season. Grenier has potential but Cabaye is all round the better player right now. Grenier needs toughen up some.

  • 59 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:16 PM

We need to cling onto the hope of shola as the mackem slayer, it’s the one good title the lad has earned in his career.

    Check him out

I want to see German Pezella here too .Awesome centreback

  • 71 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:26 PM

There is a geordie lad formerly on our books who plays in Belgium, and I’m sure there will be other minor players in the smaller leagues. At top level (the level you would see them mentioned in media) the money is so good in England that unless they are truly ambitious to push there limits then I think most don’t see the point.

Technically I think English players would be able to play abroad, but they would have the same issues that a lot of foreigners coming to England have. They would need the time to settle and adapt. English players don’t have less ability, but they have different abilities and qualities so need to adapt them to suit whichever league they go to.

Personally I think the national team would be far better off if more players did move abroad.

  • 78 MrMojoRisin76 // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:32 PM

I agree with you both, maybe Ince going to Monaco is an early sign of the technical work the FA say’s it has been doing at grass roots level is starting to work.

  • 79 lesh // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:32 PM

If Grenier’s not keen on joining us, IF, then this is another illustration of Kinnear’s inability to function at the level he’s at.

IF our interest was genuine in the first place, common sense says that the target’s interest and enthusiasm for the move should have been discreetly researched. Common sense?

However, if Kinnear knew and still pursued him knowing it wasn’t going to happen then yet again fans’ll been conned.

We’ll see though I think we’re all conditioned for yet another bout of the worked hard bur couldn’t get anyone over the line crap.

These people are nowt but dupes.

  • 80 theartfuldodger // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:33 PM

This is the same as Gomis. Bids made here and there. Some people saying accepted , some saying rejected. Player wants to come, then doesent want to come.

We dont like doing deals until it leaves a bad taste in the mouth of the selling club.

  • 81 theartfuldodger // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:37 PM

Perhaps our primary target is Cabella. For a secondary target we lowball like crazy.
Maybe similar to DeJong being primary and gomis secondary.

I remember the mariappa episode. Last day we bargained for 1 to 2m and dint give in. Never heard of him again.

In 6 months we scout 2 damn players for a position to be filled.

  • 82 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:38 PM

I don’t think Ince is all that great, overhyped in my eyes. I see it more as Monaco flexing their financial muscles, the same way that Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal etc have done in the last 10-15 years by signing up young talent. Half of the players those 3 english clubs bought never made it, but it was a case of not letting other teams develop talent that could potentially cause problems in future matches and if we get enough good young players 1 or 2 will come good.

Look at Kakuta as a prime example. One of France’s highest rated prospects when he joined Chelsea and has barely had a look in and his career has faltered. Monaco now have the money to do the same.

  • 83 belgrade fan // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:39 PM

First was- we need to sell if we want o buy. Ok, we sell. Still nothing. in last 2 windows we offloaded 6 players (with Amalfitano). Take 2 on loans. And now offering Marv and Haidara on loan. Why you lads are going on SJP and with that act supporting MA-JFK-AP?

Another perfect window for Ashley more money in his pocket from selling players and also lowered the wage bill.

  • 86 Belfast // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:41 PM

Surely there should be a back up plan if you can’t sign this french kid ?

I still think it’s all smoke and mirrors, bid low when we’ve no chance of it being accepted.

If they where really serious about replacing Cabaye, they would have had his replacement through the door, before letting Cabaye leave.

  • 87 mag // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:41 PM

Pardew will be the only manager since the 1920s to lose three derbies in row if the Mackems win so I wonder how that sits with dozy twonk? The last days of the transfer window and they only have one target pure amateur setup the French must think the same.

  • 88 AaranD // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:41 PM

Jesus… Pardew seems out of all confidence and belief in that press-conference.
Expecting no actual signings and a tough game at the weekend.

  • 89 Rotonda heights // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:42 PM

isn’t it a bit strange that pardew has not even spoken to grenier, yet waxes lyrical about the guy.

I know pardew doesn’t have the cache or charisma of a KK for example to sell NUFC but surely a word with the player you desperately want to come wouldn’t go amiss?

Newsnow is mental, every other headline says grenier not coming, then alternated with pardew still ” being confident”

  • 90 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:43 PM

I don’t think Joe is having any serious role in the movements in and out.

If he wasn’t here, the Joe Kinnear (our frank friend, who’s frankness in more evident than his friendship) Column in the programme would have to be called “The Mike Ashley Column.”
He’s just a lightning rod, in my opinion. He might be putting the finger on a few ne’er-do-wells in the squad, and telling Al his fave toys (Perch, Jonas) are being confiscated, but that is all.
I think Ash wants his investments playing first team football, and not rotting and, more importantly, devaluing on the bench.

Every manager with self-respect will resign under ashley and let’s be honest pardew has got several chances and reasons to do so but seems his moral is not quite different from ashley’s
just to show how weak and wee manager pardew is

  • 94 MrMojoRisin76 // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:47 PM

I like him, wouldn’t mind him here.Monaco must see something if they are signing a young English player for free with all the money they have and the range of players willing to play for them but it’s just a rumour anyway at the minute.Be interesting to see how he does for Palace.

    Who cares?

Out of the cups … not even trying.

Ambition to finish in top ten … but avoid Europa League at all costs.

    Not my club.

  • 97 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:49 PM

Bloody hell, it feels like he should be nearly 40 by now!! Maybe we should snap him up!! He has all the attributes we look for in a player, below 26years old and free!

  • 98 yo-yo // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:51 PM

    mag @ 85

Pardew is also the only Premeriship manager where his club have not signed a player in 12 months (come Saturday morning) – the loans are not full signings as I’m sure you’ll agree
The ambition failure is above him in the pecking order.

  • 99 kevymartins // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:51 PM

Newcastle Brown Ale should give me a ring I will do it for free…..Newcastle Brown Ale your number 1 beer chosen by Joe Kinnear..

Said in a deep voice like the EA SPORTS it’s in the game.

  • 100 yo-yo // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:54 PM

My biggest worry is that we do have a poor spell now and instead of being stitched into 8th place, with a chance of 6-7th, end up just above the relegation melee.

  • 101 BandB // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:56 PM

I have really missed your Scottish-isms.
What do you make of things?

  • 102 Munster Mag // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:57 PM

catchy, if you didn’t see the game against Norwish, in full, you’re not in a position to comment, with all due respect. Forget the stats – we mullered them and the football was fast and fun.

  • 103 wolfshead@toon // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:57 PM

lmao @ buying a subscription to nufc tv for the de jong interview id rather give the money to charity than line the pockets of a fat f***ing crook thats squatting at nufc

  • 104 kevymartins // Jan 30, 2014 at 3:59 PM

@Munster mag and we came away with a point. Did you see Ben Arfa’s sitter? If that was Cabaye he would score 99% everytime so he must be replaced.

  • 105 kevymartins // Jan 30, 2014 at 4:00 PM

    Palace getting Ince.

Bizarrely, Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino has announced that Fulham have signed Lewis Holtby from Tottenham.

  • 108 toonarmydownsouth // Jan 30, 2014 at 4:01 PM

Hmm not so sure, Pards sounds as convinced in JFK’s ability as we all are

  • 109 BandB // Jan 30, 2014 at 4:05 PM

Why do people who claim to have the inside line on stuff, say “Pardew is doing this and that”, when the man himself has made it clear he isn’t involved?

  • 110 asenski // Jan 30, 2014 at 4:06 PM

    it’s old news
soon after pardew said he is confident, grenier told he does not want to join nufc
i’m sure i read it here as a tweet

  • 111 asenski // Jan 30, 2014 at 4:08 PM

how come any clubs are able to sign players for hours and quietly do their business but we should show the whole world how bad at negotiating we are

  • 112 theartfuldodger // Jan 30, 2014 at 4:09 PM

Pardew is more hope-ing than hope-ful

  • 113 TurkishFan101 // Jan 30, 2014 at 4:09 PM

Lads got some substantial news here.

If we fail to get Clement Grenier we will go for Filip Duricic around €10million.

His agent: “It’s true about Newcastle,” his agent, Ulisses Santos, told One World Sports on Thursday. “I have been speaking with Alan Pardew this week so let’s see what has happened by the end of tomorrow.”

  • 114 yo-yo // Jan 30, 2014 at 4:10 PM

Totally share your analysis of the club as an attractive force for upandcoming players. What have we got to offer ? It has to be gettting a regular place and building a career for a future nternational regular. We seem to have a good reputation in la belle France and Pardew is seen as a decent manager but we ain’t paying top dilar and are … well just also rans as far as ambition is concerned. It’ll be harder and harder to attract quality players without Cabs as he seemed to put in a good word with his compatriots.

Gremier or Siem will do and we dodged a good few bullets in Beattie’s list of heroic deadline day failures… but I have zero confidence in Joke and even less in Ashley’s thinking on player assets.

We get £20m for Cabs, a capital profit of about £15m exlcuding oncosts, then spend £12m on a new talent but we still have a player asset with a value – we don’t just los the value of any player trading we do, they become part of the ‘working capital’ of the club. The net working capital has increased reghardless of what we buyt a replacement player for – unless he is a total donkey. I can’t work out the transfer logic of them upstairs at all.

Not able to post very often due to work rotas, but been following the debate all the same.. fingers crossed for 30 hrs…

  • 115 asenski // Jan 30, 2014 at 4:11 PM

3:21. Got to be the best shot ever.

  • 118 BandB // Jan 30, 2014 at 4:14 PM

The weirdest thing is, we are playing the best football we have played in the Ashley era.
Though Catchy is right about the long-shot thingy.
I think the transfer policy is what it says on the tin.
We’ll be in like poo off a shovel for a bargain.
    Otherwise, we’ll wait.

  • 119 TurkishFan101 // Jan 30, 2014 at 4:15 PM

He is a Benfica player, that has a natural position of attacking midfielder

  • 120 Ketsbaia9 // Jan 30, 2014 at 4:17 PM

Miralem Sulejmani could be an option.

  • 121 Rotonda heights // Jan 30, 2014 at 4:20 PM

So sad to see what is happening now. No relegation but no Europa or CL either, no cups, no new players, a total drunken incompetent embarrassment of a D.O.F, an average, ok, nothing special manager and the most turgid owner in a generation sucking away the lifeblood of the cub I’ve followed for 43 years.

Cabaye defined it perfectly ” I came to PSG to win things”

For the word definition of mediocre look under NUFC

Won’t stop 50000 perpetuating the mediocrity every home game. Therein lies the real obstacle to ever achieving change.

Shepherd and hall were crooks and gangsters and the kindest thing you can say about Ashley is at least you can see him coming.

  • 122 SholaHeskey // Jan 30, 2014 at 4:22 PM

Turkish (reminds me of lock stock so ill do it in a cockney accent) – why would his agent be speaking to Alan Pardew? wouldnt he be speaking to the guy with the mullet in the corner flicking bogies and looking at B**bies on the internet?

  • 123 beefman13 // Jan 30, 2014 at 4:25 PM

Nice stepping stone for both Cabaye and MA, one makes fortunes after buying a player so he gets prem experience only to sell on a few years later, and Cabaye admits it was the experience he needed to compete at prem level, the soul is not there when business is the main priority, literally players and managment admitting as much, leaves abad taste, is it always going to carry on like this, just to line our illustrious owners ocean deep pockets, yea he put his money down, but give us something to bite in to eh!

if Cabaye had an agreement to go we should now have a replacement through the door surely to god, then again if they come in the summer nearer the end of the contract he saves more transfer fees and more wages, fekn cannot stand this mucking aboutwe are at our level at the moment, back both your gobs up MA and long JOE, WE JUST GET SICK OF THE BULL MAN!

  • 124 SholaHeskey // Jan 30, 2014 at 4:26 PM

Corky’s erection and Rotonda saying that Ashley is coming. This blog has turned into Joe CanLeer’s internet history. All we need is for someone to say Pardew got it over the line…or Faye Downey’s working Luuk really hard

  • 125 MrMojoRisin76 // Jan 30, 2014 at 4:47 PM

Faye Downey can’t be working with De Jong, she’s usually chained to Jabba in a gold bikini with cinnamon buns cellotaped to the side of her head, around this time.Jabba won’t fork out for a proper haircut.
