Reports Grenier Turns Down Newcastle January Move

There are reports coming from France that Clement Grenier has told his club, that he does not want to move to Newcastle in January.

Clement Grenier – turns down Newcastle move

The news is being reported in both Foot01 and RMC, and what’s being reported is that Grenier has told both clubs he just doesn’t want to make a move in January to Newcastle, but would consider the move in the summer.

Well –  assuming this news is true – that’s a little embarrassing – because when a club goes  after a player the first thing you want to find out is if the players is interested – because otherwise you can do a lot of work negotiating a fee with the selling club – and it all becomes of no use.

And as we said this morning, it seems  Joe Kinnear is doing some on-the-job training as our Director of Football.

Maybe that’s why news is breaking that Newcastle are now after 22 year-old Serbian International, Filip Duricic, who is currently playing at Benfica, but has only appeared eight times in this his first season at the Portuguese club.

Filip went to Benfica last summer for €6M from Heerenveen, and would be a much cheaper option than Grenier.

We could get the lad in for say €6M permanently, or better still – on loan for the rest of the season –  so Newcastle could check him out before doing a permanent deal in the summer.

And then presumably, there’s no reason why Newcastle couldn’t then get Clement Grenier in over the summer, and also Montpellier midfielder Remy Cabella too.

Hopefully as Newcastle are desperately trying to do a deal in January – which is always difficult (didn’t we already know that?) – some of the players we cannot get in this month we could still negotiate a deal for them to be carried out in the summer.

There’s no reason why Joe shouldn’t be doing that.

What do you think?

Pretty sure Djuriric is a winger, so yeah would be Jonas’s replacement if so.

Sounds like regurgitated news from a few days ago… I will believe it, when I see it in quotes with a date.

‘I can nearly say that I will not be going to Newcastle.’

^ Probably this quote, which was before a confirmed bid came in.

“when you going after a player the first thing you want to find out is if the players i s interested – because otherwise you can do a lot of work negotiating a fee with the selling club – and it all becomes of no use.”

But Ed, then they wouldn’t be able to say we tried! Four days was enough time to get a deal done, so what better way to kill a few days that to chase a player who doesn’t want a move?

Anyway, should probably wait for official news before writing anything off completely…but this does have an awfully familiar feel to it…and I don’t like it.

If we couldn’t get our targets this window, if we actually tried anyway, then Holtby could of been a good stop gap till the summer.

If we are struggling to get our targets in and want to keep our powder dry til the summer we should be approaching chelsea and man city to see who they can loan us….they would be more than happy to loan us a player who they don’t need but could help us take points off their rivals in the title run in.

That’s a pointless argument…of course we would rather be like us than sunderland….its like saying it’s better to have your toe chopped off than your leg, neither are great but one’s better.

The fact is we have signed 8 players in 18 months but 2 are on loan, and in that time we have sold/lost 6 (simmo, perch, guthrie, ba, best, cabaye)…all of which played big roles when here.

So not like we have added those players and built the squad, chucking away the worst of it….we still have the likes of obertan, marv, gosling..all lads who don’t even feature so aren’t important and lose some key men from the side.

I think our policy is good, the way we implement it is a shambles at times.

BandB…I can see where you would be…I mean, it’s not like there can be some middle ground between only signing 2 players on loan over 2 transfer windows (whilst selling arguably your most influential player) and the way Sunderland conduct their business.

    Silly me!

    So this window…
    – Remy turned down offer to sign, in favour of keeping options open in the summer.
    – Cabella wont be leaving till the end of the season, unless someones pays £85 million.
    – Cabaye leaves for £20 million(ish) to PSG, our best player and vital to our team and needs replacing ASAP.
    – Jonas goes out on-loan to Norwich. Gone in the summer.
    – Luuk De Jong signs on-loan, hasn’t played much at all for his club.
    – Grenier situation seems very up and down, surprising!
    – Djuriric now linked with us, another play which hasn’t had an impact on his team, long term Jonas replacement.

Not much in the way of positives…

    Nufcusa,

I wish I could be as pleased as you are.

For me, football is not just about sensible purchasing or (being safe). And two loan signings over two transfer windows is a disgrace for this football club. Especially on the back of a huge TV windfall. The 5 players who were brought in were players who should of been brought in the previous summer but Mike gambled as usual and we missed the window to progress.

There should be a fine balance between being prudent with cash and being ambitious. This club keeps on showing there is absolutely no balance at all, it keeps on showing no ambition and poor planning. Supporters are up in arms and they have every right to be.

Football clubs have to be ambitious otherwise what is the point? We have no ambition.

You talk about the summer and bringing in players. Are you really that confident we will see new faces? Because going off the last few windows, it shows the complete opposite.

We will see players leave though. We are great at that.
