Reports Grenier Turns Down Newcastle January Move

6:57 pm, Thursday, January 30th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 352 Comments

There are reports coming from France that Clement Grenier has told his club, that he does not want to move to Newcastle in January.

clement grenier

Clement Grenier – turns down Newcastle move

The news is being reported in both Foot01 and RMC, and what’s being reported is that Grenier has told both clubs he just doesn’t want to make a move in January to Newcastle, but would consider the move in the summer.

Well –  assuming this news is true – that’s a little embarrassing – because when a club goes  after a player the first thing you want to find out is if the players is interested – because otherwise you can do a lot of work negotiating a fee with the selling club – and it all becomes of no use.

And as we said this morning, it seems  Joe Kinnear is doing some on-the-job training as our Director of Football.

Maybe that’s why news is breaking that Newcastle are now after 22 year-old Serbian International, Filip Duricic, who is currently playing at Benfica, but has only appeared eight times in this his first season at the Portuguese club.

Filip went to Benfica last summer for €6M from Heerenveen, and would be a much cheaper option than Grenier.

We could get the lad in for say €6M permanently, or better still – on loan for the rest of the season –  so Newcastle could check him out before doing a permanent deal in the summer.

And then presumably, there’s no reason why Newcastle couldn’t then get Clement Grenier in over the summer, and also Montpellier midfielder Remy Cabella too.

Hopefully as Newcastle are desperately trying to do a deal in January – which is always difficult (didn’t we already know that?) – some of the players we cannot get in this month we could still negotiate a deal for them to be carried out in the summer.

There’s no reason why Joe shouldn’t be doing that.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Isn’t duricic Jonas replacement, not a backup to grenier.

I found out what joe has been up to today I thought he was suppose to be in talks with lyon

I hope he reads this as well. old twut

Brilliant just been on sky HOLTBY to are you ready FULHAM

  • 6 AaranD // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:06 PM

Pretty sure Djuriric is a winger, so yeah would be Jonas’s replacement if so.

  • 7 AaranD // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:07 PM

    Would have taken Holtby…

  • 8 Ancientcoptic // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:07 PM

Sounds like regurgitated news from a few days ago… I will believe it, when I see it in quotes with a date.

‘I can nearly say that I will not be going to Newcastle.’

^ Probably this quote, which was before a confirmed bid came in.

  • 9 Ibizatoon // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:07 PM

“when you going after a player the first thing you want to find out is if the players i s interested – because otherwise you can do a lot of work negotiating a fee with the selling club – and it all becomes of no use.”

But Ed, then they wouldn’t be able to say we tried! Four days was enough time to get a deal done, so what better way to kill a few days that to chase a player who doesn’t want a move?

Anyway, should probably wait for official news before writing anything off completely…but this does have an awfully familiar feel to it…and I don’t like it.

  • 10 Harley // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:07 PM

    Holtby on loan anyone???

  • 11 Harley // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:08 PM

Sorry didn’t read earlier Holtby comments .

  • 12 AaranD // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:10 PM

If we couldn’t get our targets this window, if we actually tried anyway, then Holtby could of been a good stop gap till the summer.

laughing stock of the league, when players in a terrible league like Ligue I turn us down, how pathetic.

  • 15 Transfer Sage // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:14 PM

If we are struggling to get our targets in and want to keep our powder dry til the summer we should be approaching chelsea and man city to see who they can loan us….they would be more than happy to loan us a player who they don’t need but could help us take points off their rivals in the title run in.

  • 18 Thump // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:15 PM

@Transfer Sage: I thought we were limited to two loaned players? …or is that just domestic loans… I can never remember.

  • 25 Transfer Sage // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:19 PM

    nufc usa

That’s a pointless argument…of course we would rather be like us than sunderland….its like saying it’s better to have your toe chopped off than your leg, neither are great but one’s better.

The fact is we have signed 8 players in 18 months but 2 are on loan, and in that time we have sold/lost 6 (simmo, perch, guthrie, ba, best, cabaye)…all of which played big roles when here.

So not like we have added those players and built the squad, chucking away the worst of it….we still have the likes of obertan, marv, gosling..all lads who don’t even feature so aren’t important and lose some key men from the side.

I think our policy is good, the way we implement it is a shambles at times.

  • 26 Ben3arfa // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:20 PM

Isnt Kinnear an alcoholic who smokes? Is Ashley paying to have his pacemaker oiled up?

  • 27 Transfer Sage // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:20 PM

2 domestic loans i think, so could have 1 more in.

I know, should be the first thing we ask, would the lad like to join us.

  • 28 Ibizatoon // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:21 PM

BandB…I can see where you would be…I mean, it’s not like there can be some middle ground between only signing 2 players on loan over 2 transfer windows (whilst selling arguably your most influential player) and the way Sunderland conduct their business.

    Silly me!

Clement Grenier’s agent says he turned down Newcastle because he did not want to be Yohan Cabaye’s replacement.

  • 30 Sazzer // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:22 PM

Frederic Guerra: “It is not easy to say no to a big club like Newcastle. But Clement has finally decided to stay in Lyon.”

  • 31 AaranD // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:22 PM

    So this window…
    - Remy turned down offer to sign, in favour of keeping options open in the summer.
    - Cabella wont be leaving till the end of the season, unless someones pays £85 million.
    - Cabaye leaves for £20 million(ish) to PSG, our best player and vital to our team and needs replacing ASAP.
    - Jonas goes out on-loan to Norwich. Gone in the summer.
    - Luuk De Jong signs on-loan, hasn’t played much at all for his club.
    - Grenier situation seems very up and down, surprising!
    - Djuriric now linked with us, another play which hasn’t had an impact on his team, long term Jonas replacement.

Not much in the way of positives…

  • 40 Toon-Prodigy // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:25 PM

I wish I could be as pleased as you are.

For me, football is not just about sensible purchasing or (being safe). And two loan signings over two transfer windows is a disgrace for this football club. Especially on the back of a huge TV windfall. The 5 players who were brought in were players who should of been brought in the previous summer but Mike gambled as usual and we missed the window to progress.

There should be a fine balance between being prudent with cash and being ambitious. This club keeps on showing there is absolutely no balance at all, it keeps on showing no ambition and poor planning. Supporters are up in arms and they have every right to be.

Football clubs have to be ambitious otherwise what is the point? We have no ambition.

You talk about the summer and bringing in players. Are you really that confident we will see new faces? Because going off the last few windows, it shows the complete opposite.

We will see players leave though. We are great at that.

  • 41 breno95 // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:26 PM

cant be that hard if you have people in place to do the job properly. take the last january window. we were in a very poor position hence selling clubs would have used that as leverage against us just like they could do now knowing we have money from the sale of cabaye. by all accounts MA dealt with the 5 signings personnally. the point being is if you want to sign them then you will and not make half hearted attempts.
anyone confirm if the previous reports that the transfer of Cabella in the summer is all done? or is this another blunder?

  • 42 Harley // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:27 PM

Just been checking the stats on this filip duricic and he has 103 games with 29 goals and 0 assist in the last 4 years.

Doesn’t sound like a team player.

  • 43 banjax // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:28 PM

This all leaves a nasty taste. Ashley can’t wait to get the best money for Cabaye by hanging on until the last minute – well guess what – Aulas is doing the same leaving us short of a very skilful midfielder. Same old, same old tiresome crap. Now we can’t get the man we want why settle for second best. Far better we wait until the Summer and actually acquire the player we want. As I said in an earlier post Cabaye should have been made to stay until the Summer when we could have sounded out our 1st choice of replacement. This has Ashley written all over it and if we don’t finish in a European place then the blame is very squarely on Mike Ashley ! What a f..king shambles !!!!

  • 44 Ancientcoptic // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:29 PM

I have to say, I am disappointed that Vuckic’s loan to Rotherham was extended, especially before finding out that we would not be getting Grenier.

This is the perfect time to develop some of our prospects.

  • 45 Belfast // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:30 PM

So will the cabaye money roll over to the summer, just like the tv money did ? Will they both roll into one another ?

    It’s all very confusing ;-)

bunch of jokers they are, that’s for sure.

I’ve had enuff, same shite as summer, not watching deadline day again to be disappointed and hearing pardew say we bid 4 players but cudnt get them over the line. Instead of growing a pair and saying jk fcuked it all up. No one wants to come to Newcastle now cuz the powers that be show no ambition

  • 50 Paul P // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:33 PM

The sooner Ashley buys Rangers and sells us to someone who wants to be successful as a football club rather than a Business the better. And take the stupid Fat drunk with you. I bet he thought How to p the Newcastle fans off, I know, sell the best player for a profit right before the Derby match biggest match of the season. Get my money back before I nick off!!! Leave them right in the shat!! Cheers Fatso you have well and truly done that.

  • 51 theartfuldodger // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:35 PM

However, as the agent of Clement Grenier, I also have to ask: Is Clement really worth half of Yohan Cabaye?

Hmmmm…In mike ashleys world, even ronaldo and bale would be worth half of yohan cabaye if he played in Ligue1

  • 52 JP...from The Rock // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:35 PM

I would have this Duricic player in a heartbeat from what I’ve seen of him already and especially at just 6-8M euros. To me he’s a huge step up from Gutierrez and we all know Spidermag isn’t coming back. We desperately need a winger to supply good quality crosses into the box for our new and latest signing de Jong. To me we are definitely after this guy and that is great news to me. We won’t miss much of Cabaye until the summer when we can find a suitable replacement and we will hopefully sign Cabella in July (Cabaye’s versatile and pacey replacement).

To me this is good business again by our club but we have to move very fast, if we are left without either a winger or a centre midfielder we could be in trouble. I don’t think the club will be that daft again…or will they? Time will tell I suppose and there’s not much of that left, exciting all in all.

  • 53 Belfast // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:36 PM

Said it a few times but, if they were serious about replacing Cabaye, they would of signed a replacement before letting him leave.

  • 57 Ancientcoptic // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:38 PM

Grenier’s agent should be concerned with getting his client the highest wages possible, should we have got to the stage of talking terms.

It makes no difference to Grenier how much Lyon get for him.

Grenier’s agent is also the agent of Loic Remy.

  • 58 Ben3arfa // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:39 PM

meanwhile this wanker is having a laugh at us

  • 59 AaranD // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:39 PM

Maybe they were serious, we tried for Cabella and later Grenier both wont be moving till the summer, but who knows these days…
At the end of day, regardless of who we bought or if Cabs had stayed we just don’t have the finances like the teams currently above us.
The one team we are similar too, play better football and have the looks of a top manager.
So really at a push 6th 7th 8th is the best we can really hope for and achieve realistically.

  • 60 aidytoon9 // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:40 PM

We are clutching at straws now, we sell cabaye without having an agreement with another player?

If cabella or grenier are good enough to replace cabaye then offer 15m atleast.
Its not about replacement its first about retaining the profit.

If de Jong is a success here then we’re in with a shout for his brother Siem and that will be a major coup. I would be very happy to get any of either Siem de Jong, Cabella, Grenier or Duricic.

Honestly any of them would massively improve our squad and chance creation. Something they all have that Cabaye hasn’t is great dribbling skills to be able to go past their man.

  • 67 AaranD // Jan 30, 2014 at 7:46 PM

Siem has just recovered from a lung problem been out most of the season I believe. But yeah he is a goal scoring creative midfielder, proved in the Champions league as well.

Cabella and Grenier are not the only options.
Remember we need to replace jonas obertan gosling and marveaux too.

Then the season moves on, and we tend to just get by and accept that our current players can cope ok. But where is the signs that we learn and improve? Where are the signs that shows us that with each year passed, the ambition rises, if only just a bit?. What exactly is it Mike Ashley wants with this club? And does he actually have a clue about what he is doing?

  • 90 TurkishFan101 // Jan 30, 2014 at 8:21 PM

Lads, the Clement Grenier deal is not over yet..

The agent is basically over hyping and saying the offer we have gave them is half of what Cabaye’s value is and that means we have offered them only £10m. The agent thinks its an insult to Grenier that we have offered him that much as for a replacement for Cabaye.

Is he’s agent on drugs? Cabaye is all around developed player and we even sold him for less then what he was actually worth. Clearly the agent here is very greedy and is talking on himself not behalf of Grenier.

Expect some shocking news soon lads, don’t give up.If Ashley C.O do not step up and increase to at least £14-15m means he has no plans and we are truly fu*ked until he has left our club.

  • 104 G // Jan 30, 2014 at 8:38 PM

apparently there was talk of under 10 mil, around 6-8

  • 112 scottoon // Jan 30, 2014 at 8:45 PM

Never a dull moment in the life of a Toon supporter! I have seen some try to rationalize our transfer policy on the basis of 5 brought in last January. But they were all reaction buys….reaction to the fact that we were destined for the drop without them. Over the last several years our policy has been purely reactionary. It is either relegation threat or it is in reaction to a big sale. But we never buy to simply bolster the squad, whether it is adding quantity when thin (ie pending Europa League in the summer of 2012) or to show ambition (every other window). Treading water is not the same as swimming. Sooner or later the sharks will catch us.

  • 113 asenski // Jan 30, 2014 at 8:45 PM

What is that ambition to buy only from France ? Really strange thing as we have no chance to get the main targets from there-remy/gomis/grenier/cabella

  • 114 G // Jan 30, 2014 at 8:48 PM

TS, for that money I would deal, but didn’t both Liverpool and Arsenal offer a lot more than that in the summer and get knocked back?

  • 115 scottoon // Jan 30, 2014 at 8:48 PM

Asenski – did you really just use the expression “ambition to buy” in relation to our club?

  • 116 piers18 // Jan 30, 2014 at 8:49 PM

If we get no one this transfer window there need to be an explanation from either Ashley or Kinnear. Even from an outsider, it is hard to look at Newcastle United and label them an ambitious club. As much as I have supported Ashley over the years, it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out how low our transfer budget is. Honestly, if i were Pardew I would seriously consider finding a new club. I don’t get how Pardew is expected to persuade his players to stay and play at a high level.

  • 117 petey // Jan 30, 2014 at 8:50 PM

I’ve said it before. We won’t sign Grenier. He is to important to Lyon at the moment and unlike us teams don’t typically offload important players half way through a season. Especially with the world cup coming up and he hasn’t got a guaranteed spot. It’s not like it’s man city or barca coming in for him.

  • 118 Transfer Sage // Jan 30, 2014 at 8:51 PM

Not that i know of, and a quick google didn’t find anything, but i didn’t look much.

I think he’s worth a bid though, we need a player like valbuena and grenier/cabella….experience with talented youth

  • 119 scottoon // Jan 30, 2014 at 8:52 PM

We won’t be in for Valbuena. Not at 29 years old. He has no upside value and as we know, that is what largely motivates our transfer policy. Probably one of the big reasons we didn’t go back in for Gomis.

  • 120 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 30, 2014 at 8:53 PM

G…we were discussing Sertic the other day :)

…I posted an article from teamtalk based on stats from who Sertic was the player that came closest to Cabaye.

  • 121 G // Jan 30, 2014 at 8:53 PM

I might have imagined the bids, but there was certainly a lot of interest in him during the summer. I thought both had put in offers between 12-18M, however, I can’t find anything other than press speculation from both clubs, so I might have made it up! lol

  • 122 G // Jan 30, 2014 at 8:54 PM

  • 123 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jan 30, 2014 at 8:56 PM

I still find it weird that in a few days Fulham closes the deal on both Holtby and Kvist and we have had since September 1st to deal with the Cabaye situation!

  • 124 lesh // Jan 30, 2014 at 8:57 PM

I don’t care what anyone says, this whole charade gas been contrived. Ashley’s too shrewd to make such basic errors as not checking interest or availability before moving to buy.

His behaviour is no.less than insulting to the fans, his customers.

If he genuinely wanted Grenier or anyone for that matter, he wouldn’t have failed. Witness last January when the was a huge risk of relegation.

I genuinely feel sorry for Pardew in this. He’s got the shitty end of the stick and in the meantime Kinnear gets away with bringing Newcastle United into disrepute.

Disgraceful behaviour and the sooner he sells to an investor who wants to make a success of the club, the better.

  • 125 petey // Jan 30, 2014 at 8:58 PM

I can already guess what kinnear will say “ERM yea, we recalled vukikik from ‘is loan deal so that’s like a new signing”

Says it all doesn’t it Jesper? When a club wants to make something happen, it does. Even we did it last January. But the opposite is also true. If a club doesn’t really want to make a deal…..

Would have been easy to talk about distractions, but instead they played some of the most dominant football all year, especially in the first half. Worried about the derby though. • 175 Ciaran // Jan 30, 2014 at 9:43 PM

Some fans criticise the likes of T4C for not doing something every week, for not protesting all the time, when the reality is that what they need in order to do that is for the fans to come out and support them instead of criticising them.

When we beat Chelsea, Spurs, West Brom and Norwich, someone on the blog wrote “where are Time 4 Change now that we’ve won a few games” despite the fact that only a week previous to that T4C handed in a list of 11 questions to Lee Marshall (of which he has not answered)

Some fans take great pleasure in seeing groups like T4C fail. They are happy to criticise Ashley when it is popular to do so but likewise will criticise pressure groups if they think that is popular too.

Too many populists, not enough activists.

Thump/ Ciaran – My point is that it is decidedly unfair to paint “the masses” with the same brush and characterize everyone as fickle. I have a hard time believing that the positive feelings that come with results extend to the ownership.

I just don’t believe that the fanbase is quite that stupid. You are right that Ashley does what he wants, but I think that is just the way the wanker is made…has nothing to do with him thinking of us all as dupes. On the contrary, it just shows that our passion for our club goes beyond the ownership and straight to the pitch…which is what it is really all about.

  • 181 AaranD // Jan 30, 2014 at 9:47 PM

We are 8th in the Prem, very comfortably as well. There should be very little problem attracting players to the club unless something is going wrong in negotiations. Fulham are signing Kostos Mitroglu from Olympiakos for £12 million for pete sake, they are in the champions league as well…

So Grenier thought his chances of world cup inclusion would suffer if he was at Newcastle? First off, it didnt do Cabaye any harm, and anyway does staying at Lyon and avoiding the challenge of the Premier League give him a better one? And whats wrong with being Cabayes replacement anyway? He should be flattered, seeing as hardly nyone knew who he was a coupe of weeks ago. Something doesnt add up, either his agent is drunk on his own supposed ability to squeeze blood from a stone since the Remy to QPR debacle or its crap talk to try and get a last minute desperate bid. If its the latter he may ahve underestimated Ashley – he doesnt always return to the same deal, and when he does he usually comes back when the player has cooled his contract and is cheaper.

In any event, if playing for NUFC at the top end of the PL is looked at as second rat compared to OL in Ligue Un, then we really do have an image problem. Could it be that our Regime is becoming infamous for its penny-pinching full-of-compromises economics?

  • 184 Ciaran // Jan 30, 2014 at 9:50 PM

We are human beings, capable of coming to conclusions based on the empirical evidence in front of us.

If we beat Sunderland, will that have changed the fact that we limply surrendered in both the FA Cup and League Cup? Will that change the fact that have no intention of qualifying for Europe? Will that change the fact that we have just sold our best player for – in my mind – a paltry 20 million quid?

Let’s wake up and form opinions based on facts, rather than a few results.

I have to laugh at some of the panic merchants on here over the sale of Cabaye. I would have liked him to stay but he didn’t want to and we got good money for him.

I feel we have enough in the centre of mifield to temporarily replace him till the summer and my main worry is how this will affect Debuchy

Tsunki, I think he is gambling on a higher payout in the very near future.

Newcastle is a decent proposition for any French player, Cabaye is testimony to that. Even HBA has gained maturity since he has been here.

Grenier and his agent obviously are holding out for a top tier team and a big pay day sooner rather than later.

  • 192 Ciaran // Jan 30, 2014 at 9:53 PM

Man City fans don’t care how much money is spent, so your statement has fallen on itself.

Also, are you saying that if we don’t like how NUFC is run we should simply support some other team? Even if we have supported this one for our entire lives? Is it not a more logical step to try and change the way in which our club is run?

    Completely flawed logic.

  • 198 Transfer Sage // Jan 30, 2014 at 9:57 PM

I don’t think anyone on here is saying go out and buy 4 or 5 30mil pound players and try and win the league.

People are as annoyed about off the field things such as the disregard the clubs has for its fans (not customers as some say but fans) and they prey on our loyalty to the team/club as they know they can get away with just about anything.

And if somebody tells me we can’t afford to buy a single player all season, despite selling one for 20mil then I’m not interested in hearing it.

We will become the first club to not complete a permanent transfer in prem league history if we don’t complete on tomorrow.

  • 199 Ciaran // Jan 30, 2014 at 9:58 PM

It would appear that the option to cancel is no longer present – wonder why that is? Why is the automatic renewal BEFORE the end of the transfer window?

I am not advocating that people stop going to the games, but what I would advocate is stop paying up front well in advance, and rather, go on a match-by-match basis.

That way, if the club is continually run in a fashion contrary to the ambitions of the fans, you then have the power to decide not to go to the next few matches whereas if you have a season ticket you are financially committed to paying for it, regardless of how he runs the club.

It takes the power from Ashley and puts it back into the hands of the fans.

  • 200 p // Jan 30, 2014 at 9:58 PM

ciaran, your argument is flawed. If you want a club that spends loads of money and has top ambition, Man City or Chelsea are the clubs for you, irrelevant want their fans want, they have nothing to do with my point.

As for changing the club, no chance. It gets on my tits that people on here bang on about how badly the club is run and all that.

He owns the club, he can do what he wants with it, there will be no mass boycott so, whats the point in the constant crying and whining like a bunch of babies.

  • 206 Transfer Sage // Jan 30, 2014 at 10:01 PM

Also I don’t blame the club if they want to go down this route of cheaper players, it’s fine as we have got quality for a good price.

The issue is we haven’t really extended the squad….we have the same bench/squad players we had 2/3 years ago, just we have moved the first team lads out to replace with different first team players…..we should be adding to the quality and depth of squad now as we have a decent starting 11 but awful back up and very few options to change the game.

There are plenty of players this and last season who have been very good and been bought for peanuts, with more in depth scouting and a broader range we could have gotten them.

We keep persisting with the same targets every window and can’t get them, it comes a point when it’s time to move on and say you missed your chance to join us.

Lilongwe on here pointed out a great bit this morning that we have only just signed up a deal/connection with two local boys clubs, they should already be in place if looking to develop our own youth, as should cat 1 academy status, as should connections with clubs abroad to send kids too.

  • 213 Ciaran // Jan 30, 2014 at 10:04 PM

“He owns the club and can do what he wants with it”

I feel sorry for you if that is how you approach Newcastle United. He merely rents NUFC. A football club is nothing without its fans, he does not own us, ergo he does not own the club.

Rangers proved it when they went tits up. They had to form an entirely “new” football club – but it is the same club, with the same fans. Arguably, they will have to do it all over again, perhaps with an entirely new “club” but its identity will forever remain, because they have the fans.

Ashley owns the current business construct that is attached to NUFC – but that is not the club.

As for “wanting to spend loads of money and win things” nonsense – I want a club run with the ambition and drive to better itself. If we can achieve that with cheap signings in an attempt to crack the top 6 then all the better! But that is not his agenda, his agenda is to make as much money out of NUFC before trying to flog it for the best deal for himself.

Also, is it criminal to want Newcastle United to win something? I must have missed that memo.

  • 214 Jail for Ashley // Jan 30, 2014 at 10:04 PM

  • 216 Transfer Sage // Jan 30, 2014 at 10:06 PM

Also nobody is demanding huge money….why can’t people see there is a difference between spending 100mil we can’t afford and spending 10-20 which we can (as every ther club seems to be able to).

Then there is the lack of cat 1 academy status when we claim to want to develop kids.

There is the talk that the said they don’t prioritise cups or want europa league as it isn’t financially viable…never mind winning something.

What about not talking to fans properly.

Yes we are safe in mid table, but that’s the problem…..the club are doing nothing to progress further with no signings this season on a permanent basis.

As a fan I want us to challenge even if we don’t win, it’s just annoying to see the club year after year do things to treat fans with contempt (that doesn’t refer to signing players)

  • 222 p // Jan 30, 2014 at 10:10 PM

To the contrary, Jfa, I support Newcastle because I support them. I don’t care who runs them (it has always been bad owners, even Hall). I want them to win and do well but I don’t cry like a baby when they don’t.

I don’t live anywhere close now but I was there on the terraces in the old second division against the likes of Grimsby as well as against Barcelona in the CL.

As for the argument about borrowing the club that is wishful thinking.

  • 223 Tsunki // Jan 30, 2014 at 10:11 PM

I dont think the majority of fans are gutted by Cabaye leaving at all, in fact I would say most of us twigged a year ago he was on his way sooner rather than later. And whats more, although he was a decent player, he shone in a pretty haphazard team, I dont thin we were robbed at £20m.

Pardew has the makings of a decen enough team not to feel any discernible adverse affects of losing him, he just needs to switch round a bit, like he did at Norwich, which on another day would have been a 3-0 or 3-1.

What MOST fans are really sad about is that they know that Ashley will run this boat on a minimal crew, like he does his shops. Minimum input, maximised profit and effect. Percentages. We arent going to see a clutch of decent signings that will signal the possibility of a climb to the top tier of the league and Europe. We arent even going to see a team built with confidence in the certain defeat for the mackems.

If Ashley proves me wrong and makes me look a fool then I’d be delighted as it would mean the bloke actually has ambition for the club.

This time last year I said well he has reacted to a bad situation well, he brought in players we needed which is important to keep us in the league and I thought maybe he would have learned from his summer mistake.

So I came into this summer hoping he would sign players and push us on, just 2/3 players, didn’t have to be big names or high fees but players, but we didn’t sign other than a loan of remy who appears to have no intention of staying.

Then this jan it’s the same again, we have got 1 lad in on loan and sold our best player and are now trying to bis last minute.

I am not defending Mash, just saying he bought the club and can do pretty mcuch what he wants.

I think he does want relative success and progress but in a way that is very frugal.

As far as I am concerned, that is his prerogative. I just think it is better for fan’s sanity to get behind the team and discuss stuff like how players are performing and what we think of targets that we are linked with.

Slating Ashley all day is just getting repetitive and pointless.

I went to games for 50 years and watched some crap. I spent 25 years commuting from London so I have spent my fair share. Home and away. I stopped going 2 years ago. I enjoy watching crap as long as the club is trying to improve. This team is a lot better than some of the teams in the past. I will not watch it. I will always support it, but I refuse to put money in this bandit’s pocket. He has made 80 million in the last year and spent nowt on players. He loves blind faith loyalty because it is more money for him. Does the urine in the wind taste sweet. Nothing will change until we stay away. Going to the ground is not supporting the team. It is making the bandit richer. I would gladly drop a couple of leagues to get rid of the bandit.

No worries, I don’t agree with everything you post, and think i’m a bit softer on ashley than you are, but i won’t ever criticise a fan for trying to do their bit to change the club in a way that’s positive (or a way they think is positive, even if i don’t agree) just the same i’ll never criticise a fan for going to every game even when people call a boycott…each to their own, just like people to know the truth of what’s happening.

I can’t see us challenging at all. If the reports are true pardew is on 400k a year he’d get that managing in the championship and with his stock high he’d walk into another job…..I’d have a lot of respect for the man if he walked after January to be honest.

I said the exact same thing the other day regarding Pardew and whilst I have a certain amount of sympathy for his situation, I don’t believe there is a cat in hells chance of him leaving. I am afraid we are stuck with them all.

Having said that though, the lack of transfer activity this window regarding incomings isn’t the disaster most people on here are harping on about due to player availability, inflated prices and the fact that our squad and league position is decent.

My main worry is in the summer when I feel we will be depleted with the likes of Remy going back to QPR or elsewhere and many fringe players out of contract and leaving.

The squad, whilst decent, needed strengthening not just up front, but on the wings, centre back and a back up right back and that was prior to the sale of Cabaye.

With the probability of the likes of Marveaux, Gosling, Shola, Jonas and Obertan leaving in the summer, there is going to have to be an awful lot of incomings.

Ashley’s record in that area isn’t good and I fear we might have to rely on kids as back up to an already thin squad which, in my opinion, will lead to another relegation battle unlessAshley does spend big in the summer.

  • 254 jimiley // Jan 30, 2014 at 10:31 PM

This season will be a turning point. Many old fans have gone and cheap family tickets are keeping the gates at a good level. Hence the dead atmosphere at the ground. This club is going downhill fast. All seems well but we are approaching the cliff edge.

We’ll just have to get used to that. Let’s be honest if you were a top player would you want to go to a club with no ambition?

T4C are still about, still plugging away and still trying to think of ways to hold Ashley to account.

Discussions have been ongoing on short-term strategy as well as long term strategy. I cannot speak for the organisation, but personally I think NUST is the only viable long term strategy, but they themselves need to shake themselves up and get back out and meet the fans again and show themselves to be a credible long term alternative to 100% private ownership.

What T4C can do in the short-term is keep being a thorn in Ashley’s side.

Just hope to good we don’t lose…again

  • 308 Ciaran // Jan 30, 2014 at 11:14 PM

How do you mean? We could be looking at relegation by that time? Ashley will never allow the club to be relegated again – not because he cares about us – but because it would be harmful to his investment.

When Ashley does decide to sell, the club will be streamlined, in the black, and sitting mid-table. I am sure that is an exciting prospect for some fans, but for me it is all about trying to force his hand in the short term, working with organisations and groups in the medium/long term to try and work a better resolution for the governance of our football club in the future.

NUFC will survive without Ashley – in fact, I reckon it will flourish.

  • 309 expatmag // Jan 30, 2014 at 11:14 PM

You say that Ashley will keep the club in the PL?

That maybe so but only if he spends substantial funds in the summer as there will be a mass exodus of major players and squad back ups.

If he doesn’t spend big, then our already thin squad will get thinner due to the reliance of kids coming back from loan deals to beef up the squad and you just know where that will lead.

In my opinion, Ashley will need to spend up to 50 million pounds on fees alone in the summer and that is not going to happen

  • 310 p // Jan 30, 2014 at 11:15 PM

Ciarran, I did not know that. So of course, I don’t take that as a compliment.

  • 311 expatmag // Jan 30, 2014 at 11:16 PM

Anything is possible. See y previous post. Substantial funds will need to be spent. Can you see Ashley doing this?

  • 312 AaranD // Jan 30, 2014 at 11:16 PM

Doesn’t Ashley own a 10% share in Rangers or something along those lines.
So like people are saying he’ll sell up buy Rangers in the next few years for pretty much nothing and £10 million in the Scottish league makes a title contender with Champs League.

  • 313 lesh // Jan 30, 2014 at 11:17 PM

According to Pardew, he’d been assured that all of the Cabaye fee would be spent this window.

According to Sky, we’re lining up a move for Mark Noble.

Therefore Kinnear must value Mark Noble’s at £20m.

  • 314 p // Jan 30, 2014 at 11:17 PM

  • 315 Ciaran // Jan 30, 2014 at 11:18 PM

Which would tie in with the end of the 3-5 year time frame that I personally think he will be here for – around 2019/20.

I do foresee the kind of firesale that you are talking about, after all, why would he leave high valued assets when he is planning to sell when he could flog them, use them to repay his “debt” and make a tidy profit when the club is sold.

Sad times, and it would appear we are in for 4/5 more seasons like this one…

  • 316 expatmag // Jan 30, 2014 at 11:19 PM

Yes, he owns 10% but there is no guarantee he will buy them. He bought his shares cheap and he is just as likely to sell them when Rangers recover.

Someone said in previous thrteads that there is more value in advertising SD in the PL than the CL.

  • 317 Jail for Ashley // Jan 30, 2014 at 11:21 PM

That’s your opinion and there are many other differing opinions out there, unfortunately Mashleys dysfunctional opinions and strategy had us going from fifth to almost relegated, to outside CL contenders to throwing the towel in, there really isn’t a plan for on field success but a brilliant plan with the right dice to get his money back and more.

Hd, regardless of all the stuff on here where people tout their views as fact…

It does seem that the club are genuinely trying to get players in. It has to be said that we all probably think they are trying to do it on the cheap, that is the way they operate.

My guess is that they are still trying to get heads in but, whether they do or not is another matter.

Personally, I think Cabella could happen because Montpellier are a bit crazy. I see they signed a forward to today, not sure that has nay impact on their position or not.

Djuricic’s agent is quoted as saying he is in talks so, that is quite likely to happen – there is at lease interest from the player. It comes down to fees, wages, terms etc

if you look at it we have two good strikers in Remy and De Jong…we can use Goofy there too…our defence is now really good with Debuchy, Willo in top form, Santon playing good…and battling for one spot between MYM,Saylor and Colo…good CMs Tiote and Anita, Sissoko can play there too, but now i think Pardew will use him as a number 10, we can play Marveaux in that position and HBA too…we have solid team to bring good football…i hope Luuk catch his chance and earns contract here, he can be good player and this team can be build around him…
    ………………..De Jong………………………….

bench…..colo,saylor,haidara,marveaux,goofy,cisse,shola,sammy,bigi,dummet……….we dont need to buy players like noble, he isnt good enough for starting position here…we can wait till summer a then go for Grenier,Cabella and buy De Jong if good enough…and see what remys situation is, if he is availible for 10-12M buy him, if more, go for some other targets…..and that team can really have great season and play some attractive football, attacking, with pace and power, and if you look at it, it will be very young team……

the reports were that he was going to see if he made then bench for the last game or something and he did not so that was the decision point on his part to leave for pastures new

Good for you to think that way, not even bills has come out in support of “the waiting game” do you think it’s a coincidence that LDJ was quickly signed after Cabaye had gone or had negotiations finally reached an agreeable point.

and I think we need to sign coach for set pieces, our attacking are awful…somebody like Faye Downey as fitness coach….she was our biggest signing in the summer

jfa, again, I am merely stating what I see in the media.

It’s a fact that reasonably reliable media outlets are reporting serious transfer intent on Newcastle’s part.

I believe that. What I really can’t say is whether we will see a decent signing or the often disappointment we often do.

Even if we get that Serbian guy, I have to say I will be disappointed, though I have no idea as to whether he is any good or not.

Personally, only Cabella (in terms of realistic signings that have been touted) signing will bring me satisfaction. But, yes, it’s not the end of the world. You can sign loads of players like Spurs did and still do crap.

Adding players is only one component of on field success

That’s the first answer I got to that question, and it seems the most likely answer, not just the money but the feel good factor, to say the fat man doesn’t care about the fans !

It’s an absolute disgrace the way Ashley and his slimey chums are running the club.

Just been catching up with this evenings posts. I see there is a link with Mark Noble… deary me. The lad is a decent player, but a decent player isn’t a replacement for a very good player in Cabaye for £20m. Hope that’s not Pardew using his inverted genius to offer an opinion. He would ruin the team further if he signed his own players.

We won’t sign anyone anyway. It is totally unacceptable for all of the fans constantly being mislead.

King Kevin realised this straight away and wasn’t standing for their lies. Pardew gets gimped up and on all fours and takes whatever they dish out.

Ashley just cares about making his money and doing it with a limited outlay on players. It’s so frustrating and rather saddening.
