There are reports coming from France that Clement Grenier has told his club, that he does not want to move to Newcastle in January.
Clement Grenier – turns down Newcastle move
The news is being reported in both Foot01 and RMC, and what’s being reported is that Grenier has told both clubs he just doesn’t want to make a move in January to Newcastle, but would consider the move in the summer.
Well – assuming this news is true – that’s a little embarrassing – because when a club goes after a player the first thing you want to find out is if the players is interested – because otherwise you can do a lot of work negotiating a fee with the selling club – and it all becomes of no use.
And as we said this morning, it seems Joe Kinnear is doing some on-the-job training as our Director of Football.
Maybe that’s why news is breaking that Newcastle are now after 22 year-old Serbian International, Filip Duricic, who is currently playing at Benfica, but has only appeared eight times in this his first season at the Portuguese club.
Filip went to Benfica last summer for €6M from Heerenveen, and would be a much cheaper option than Grenier.
We could get the lad in for say €6M permanently, or better still – on loan for the rest of the season – so Newcastle could check him out before doing a permanent deal in the summer.
And then presumably, there’s no reason why Newcastle couldn’t then get Clement Grenier in over the summer, and also Montpellier midfielder Remy Cabella too.
Hopefully as Newcastle are desperately trying to do a deal in January – which is always difficult (didn’t we already know that?) – some of the players we cannot get in this month we could still negotiate a deal for them to be carried out in the summer.
There’s no reason why Joe shouldn’t be doing that.
What do you think?

Comment #41cant be that hard if you have people in place to do the job properly. take the last january window. we were in a very poor position hence selling clubs would have used that as leverage against us just like they could do now knowing we have money from the sale of cabaye. by all accounts MA dealt with the 5 signings personnally. the point being is if you want to sign them then you will and not make half hearted attempts.
anyone confirm if the previous reports that the transfer of Cabella in the summer is all done? or is this another blunder?

Comment #42Just been checking the stats on this filip duricic and he has 103 games with 29 goals and 0 assist in the last 4 years.
Doesn’t sound like a team player.

Comment #43This all leaves a nasty taste. Ashley can’t wait to get the best money for Cabaye by hanging on until the last minute – well guess what – Aulas is doing the same leaving us short of a very skilful midfielder. Same old, same old tiresome crap. Now we can’t get the man we want why settle for second best. Far better we wait until the Summer and actually acquire the player we want. As I said in an earlier post Cabaye should have been made to stay until the Summer when we could have sounded out our 1st choice of replacement. This has Ashley written all over it and if we don’t finish in a European place then the blame is very squarely on Mike Ashley ! What a f..king shambles !!!!

Comment #44I have to say, I am disappointed that Vuckic’s loan to Rotherham was extended, especially before finding out that we would not be getting Grenier.
This is the perfect time to develop some of our prospects.

Comment #45So will the cabaye money roll over to the summer, just like the tv money did ? Will they both roll into one another ?
It’s all very confusing 😉
bunch of jokers they are, that’s for sure.

Comment #47I know the windows only open a month but cant you negotiate transfers and reach an agreement. If they knew they were gonna let cabaye go they’ve had since bloody august to sort something. I bet ashley doesn’t let the shelves go empty in his shops. What a pair of k-nob heads

Comment #49I’ve had enuff, same shite as summer, not watching deadline day again to be disappointed and hearing pardew say we bid 4 players but cudnt get them over the line. Instead of growing a pair and saying jk fcuked it all up. No one wants to come to Newcastle now cuz the powers that be show no ambition

Comment #50The sooner Ashley buys Rangers and sells us to someone who wants to be successful as a football club rather than a Business the better. And take the stupid Fat drunk with you. I bet he thought How to p the Newcastle fans off, I know, sell the best player for a profit right before the Derby match biggest match of the season. Get my money back before I nick off!!! Leave them right in the shat!! Cheers Fatso you have well and truly done that.

Comment #51However, as the agent of Clement Grenier, I also have to ask: Is Clement really worth half of Yohan Cabaye?
Hmmmm…In mike ashleys world, even ronaldo and bale would be worth half of yohan cabaye if he played in Ligue1

Comment #52I would have this Duricic player in a heartbeat from what I’ve seen of him already and especially at just 6-8M euros. To me he’s a huge step up from Gutierrez and we all know Spidermag isn’t coming back. We desperately need a winger to supply good quality crosses into the box for our new and latest signing de Jong. To me we are definitely after this guy and that is great news to me. We won’t miss much of Cabaye until the summer when we can find a suitable replacement and we will hopefully sign Cabella in July (Cabaye’s versatile and pacey replacement).
To me this is good business again by our club but we have to move very fast, if we are left without either a winger or a centre midfielder we could be in trouble. I don’t think the club will be that daft again…or will they? Time will tell I suppose and there’s not much of that left, exciting all in all.

Comment #57Grenier’s agent should be concerned with getting his client the highest wages possible, should we have got to the stage of talking terms.
It makes no difference to Grenier how much Lyon get for him.

Grenier’s agent is also the agent of Loic Remy.

Comment #59Maybe they were serious, we tried for Cabella and later Grenier both wont be moving till the summer, but who knows these days…
At the end of day, regardless of who we bought or if Cabs had stayed we just don’t have the finances like the teams currently above us.
The one team we are similar too, play better football and have the looks of a top manager.
So really at a push 6th 7th 8th is the best we can really hope for and achieve realistically.

Comment #60We are clutching at straws now, we sell cabaye without having an agreement with another player?
The way this club under Ashley is run is a joke!!!!
Our best player has gone and prob nobody as good as him to replace him.
20 million in mikes pocket though. He is laughing at us man!!!!

Comment #62Why the hell does Ashley think every player in ligue 1 is worth 10-12m.
They offered peanuts for Thauvin as well.
If cabella or grenier are good enough to replace cabaye then offer 15m atleast.
Its not about replacement its first about retaining the profit.
ashley would offer 10m to get cabaye back if he doesent get a game at PSG

Comment #66If de Jong is a success here then we’re in with a shout for his brother Siem and that will be a major coup. I would be very happy to get any of either Siem de Jong, Cabella, Grenier or Duricic.
Honestly any of them would massively improve our squad and chance creation. Something they all have that Cabaye hasn’t is great dribbling skills to be able to go past their man.

Cabella and Grenier are not the only options.
Remember we need to replace jonas obertan gosling and marveaux too.
And to think we still dont offer 13 to 15m
Should have a list of 4 to 5 options and that too of players interested in coming.

Yeah we need many replacements/upgrades, but they wont happen this window.
If nothing does happen this window I hope we have a war chest of around £50 million (Cabs plus tv money) to improve the squad all round.

Comment #74And to top it all Pardew is hopeful.
Looks like the bubble burst way too soon for ashleys liking. They wanted to take this pretense till the last day.
Unfortunately for them now they still they have 24 hrs to make a transfer.
Cabaye was done in 24 hrs.

Not so very long ago, a chubby, lonely boy, abandoned boy his friends on a school trip, was spotted wandering around the streets of Montmartre, addressing older ladies on street corners with the words: “Voulez vous une paquette du Blue Bird toffees, et aussi, des Anglo chuddy gum?”
He learned important lessons that day, which later, made him the popular figure he is today.

Comment #78Well, its coming out with Grenier’s agent saying he rejected for us because he found out he was going to be “Cabaye’s Replacement” lol? What is wrong with being Cabayes replacement? He will start every game, and have a better higher chance of being in the squad for the World Cup as well. Something sounds fishy, I do not understand. Well on to next target as I said earlier then? unless something revolting happens in next 24 hours
