News coming in from Portugal that Newcastle have had a €10M (£8.2M) bid for attacking midfielder Filip Duricic rejected by Benfica, and that seems a high bid for the player who only turned 22 yesterday.
Filip Duricic – €10M bid turned down by Benfica
Benfica signed the attacking midfielder from Heerenveen for just €6M only last summer, and as we reported yesterday the buy-out clause in his contract is €40M.
Newcastle seem to have got themselves into a situation where selling clubs are very aware of the £20M the club received for Yohan Cabaye from PSG, and are therefore asking top dollar for Newcastle’s targets.
But didn’t the same thing happen three years ago after we had sold Andy Carroll to Liverpool for £35M?
The answer is yes – but it doesn’t seem that the leadership at Newcastle has learned that particular lesson.
Newcastle must have known there was a possibility that Cabaye would be sold in January since last August.
At that time Yohan Cabaye revealed earlier this week there was an agreement with the player that if an acceptable bid came in for Yohan we would sell him – so surely we had several replacements already lined up?
Or so one would have thought.
And Newcastle kept their word with Yohan – and he’s gone, but now we are in a bit of a desperate situation – and it will be a travesty if Newcastle don’t bring in a replacement for Cabaye – in the next 8 hours and 23 minutes – approximately.
What do you think?

Why not follow Ed Harrison’s mantra
‘Support the team and not the regime’.
In a busy week I have been dipping in and out
of here to catch up on any transfer activity only
to have to plough through the pestilence and
war drivel analogies from t4c’s finest. The
latest to liken Ashley to Hitler!
Preying on short term fan vulnerabilities
as the close of the window approaches.
They just don’t get it- the vast majority of
fans want to win and enjoy football matches.
Misleading comments on season tickets
and expecting fans not to recognise that
the team on the field now is a good deal
better and younger than the team when
Ashley first arrived. The so called action
group have run out of ideas- try changing
those constantly peddling the message
it is not working and it’s driving fans off
the blog. Persuade not bully.
At present they are like First World War
Generals( in their own pompous mindset)
Of Cavalry, struggling to come to terms
with poison gas, aeroplanes and tanks.
They are blundering about in a world
that they do not understand. They are
drawn from a narrow set of experience
that they do not understand what an
enormous part of our life is taken up
with being a toon fan. I ask you – one
of the self declared t4c leading lights
declared on here, that he was off to
Goodison Park to display his banner.
Only to sheepishly admit finally that
he had been refused entry, with his
banner. So much for a man on a
mission- you couldn’t make it up.
Talking of on a mission- You need a Mission Statement
– even Ashley realised that.

Comment #43It only happens at the toon. They knew Cabaye was going yert did nothing about it.I don’t blame Grenier for what he said.Anyone with half a brain would have got him (Grenier) before going through with the Cabaye sale. This tosser will not buy anyone as he will think Why should I spend were safe.It really does boil ya water, watching these clowns on when the window is open.
Thanks for the help regarding that bloody virus thing.

Comment #44Good grief, I always felt silkman was a slimey sod, but what a truly disgusting thing to say. Having lost someone to cancer and watching it slowly eat away at them, I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. What kind of man is he?
Anyways, back to the football…nee chance we are getting anyone!

Comment #45Release clause for Duricic is irrelevant if Benfica actually want to sell, and apparently they are skint.

Comment #46Seeing all to many people commenting saying its not such a bad thing if we don’t replace Cabaye today.
Have they taken any time to look at our record without him? He missed 20 games for us since he signed, we won only 4, Drew another 4, and lost the other 12.
So for me, it is an absolute must we replace him.
Anita, Sissoko and Tiote are all excellent players on their day, but are not in the same league as Cabs.
We need a creative midfielder brought in today. Anything other than that is a travesty.

There aren’t many, jay rodriquez springs to mind with southampton (although top 9).
Mike williamson came in with us and moved through the ranks, although started in championship with us.
And usually top top clubs have 20mil to spend on players, we don’t so could look at those below. Not many but some, especially when looking around 18-20 year olds.
what about llana and lambert (came up from league 1 with the club)

Comment #49As proud sponsors of Newcastle United, wonga.com are giving the Magpies the best chance of taking all three points against Sunderland this weekend.
Supporters attending the Barclays Premier League fixture will find a clap banner on their seat at St. James’ Park ans should hold that banner up before kick-off to create the famous black and white stripes.
http://www.nufc.co.uk/articles/20140131/turn-st-james-park-black-and-white_2281670_3647132?
How condescending and absolutely pathetic.
“C’mon everybody lets all have a big clap, sponsored by your friends Wonga,” with Sports Direct swindled free adverts everywhere.

Theres players out there, siem de jong and grenier including, but we just dont want to pay a proper fee for a player worthy of replacing cabaye.

Comment #53This transfer has proved what rubbish “management” we have. We now accept this season is just about over, so now is the time to prepare for next season. Getting players in now and playing them will bed them in for the start of next season. Anyone remember the 1988/89 or 1999/00 seasons? Too many players in the close season didnt work when the season started..

Comment #54Classic example of the new transfer model.
Player X is valued at Y. Newcastle offer Y-2M then say, “oohhh! we were so close to getting him but agents, wages, etc got in the way. , sorry next one….”

Comment #55Ian Toon is right. Too many fans miss the point. Firstly it is apparent that the club did pursue two players to fill Cabaye’s boots. Caballa and Grenier. Both said no. What does JK do next? Do we really want them to sign ‘somebody/anybody?’ There was too much of that in the past. The new striker looks to be a good signing who adds to the quality of the squad. That should take us through to the summer. Neither is it true that they don’t get new players. Half a dozen of our current best players have been at St James’ less than three years!

Are you telling me that there are 2 players in our price range with the potential to fill cabayes boots in all of europe? Not a chance, there are tons more and some who actually want moves like siem de jong.
The bidding low is ok, just need to have more targets and more scouted as chances are club wont accept low bids

what people are missing is the difference in putting in a bid just to show fans you are trying, and going after a guy to really bring him in. PSG, WENT AFTER CABAYE. They were going to bid until they go there man. They showed they wanted him. When Loan Kinnear goes after someone with a cut rate bid, that doesnt exactly scream “we want you”. Players realize that. If they got aggressive with either bids their might be a bigger interest in them coming here.

Comment #65Whens the last time weve signed a first team player in the window we targeted him who wasnt running down out of contract.
Anita, 18 months ago, will be 2 years IF we get anyone in the summer. Even mbwia and debuchy took 6 months to get over the mystical line.

Comment #66Chaps in all fairness can we all say with total belief we thought Cabaye would be replaced. If Cabs is correct this was agreed some time ago so like others have said the club have had plenty of time.
Ash is merely playing a waiting game to recoup his money, JFK will be well involved and no doubt will get a nice payoff once the club is sold and Pards will just have to get on with it.
If i was Pards i would walk, he will get another job due to our league position this year, last year he had no chance but now……
I hope i am wrong, Ash is a greedy man who is laughd at by other chairmen at other clubs !

Why did grenier go from i dont know anything can happen to no im not moving overnight. Also the chairman of lyon was out saying hed take 11 million quid for him. So yes we went after him but without any real conviction or competence to actually get a chance to secure him.

Comment #77Mr Tuff- satire and humour can get a message across- you use it frequently. But to endlessly repeat the same drivel without any insight or emotional contact with the reader is plain boring.
We all want the same things a football club to be proud of along with our region. My father told me that SJH captured the hearts and minds of the fans with talk of a Geordie team. We’ve left such fanciful thoughts in the past- it’s how you go about change. It’s not getting those with the biggest egos an least emotional intelligence involved.
I know you sometimes have to rein yourself in but you would be a learned experienced individual rather than the bull in the china shop types-LOL.
