It’s Time To Sign Up This Striker For Newcastle

2:10 pm, Tuesday, February 4th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 352 Comments

28 year-old Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis didn’t sign for Inter-Milan after all last month, and we have to think there’s a very good chance that Newcastle can sign him as a free agent in the summer, and there’s no reason why he cannot be signed up now to  a pre-contract agreement.

bafetimbi gomis - pink

Bafe Gomis – sign this man up

But it looks like that’s something he hasn’t done yet,  as he had this to say to L’Equipe today:

“I have not signed any pre-contract with anyone,” “I can pretty much go, as I can very well stay.” “I play with the mindset of a player who loves his club and respects his contract.”

“I would not want to give the impression that my head is somewhere else.” “I’m still proud to wear these colors, and I have a lot of ambitions with OL [Lyon]. So don’t expect me to give up.”

That’s a nice PR statement from Bafe, but that’s all it is, and we certainly expect Bafe to respect his five year contract at Lyon and give them 100% while he’s there, which is until the end of June, and then he can sign for any club as a free agent.

And there have been quotes coming from the French International striker’s Twitter account, that he would like to sign for Newcastle, and that he is already learning English for his new career in England.

We just hope that’s going to be with Newcastle United, because as a free agent this lad would be a good signing for Newcastle.

And he could potentially link up well with 23 year-old Dutchman Luuk de Jong, who we hope will earn a deal on Tyneside in the summer, by scoring some goals for us through the final 14 games of the season.

You never know – maybe there’s some good things about to happen to Newcastle before the end of the season, and also in the summer.

That would be a complete shock – but also a very nice change. :D

    Ed – Why??

    Mag

I could take losing a few games if it got rid of pardew. Let’s face it the season’s over and even pardew couldn’t relegate us from here.

  • 2 Transfer Sage // Feb 4, 2014 at 2:15 PM

Only seen bit of this lad, not hugely impressed but if the club want him why was he not bought in january or at least signed up to a pre contract to join in the summer.

    They clearly don’t fancy him.

    Great hold up striker,

    but the main thing is

  • 4 croftus5678 // Feb 4, 2014 at 2:15 PM

soon be 29yo but agree he would be an improvement to the squad but i would rather have luuk/cisse/goofy as our main strikers untill a better quality striker comes along.

  • 5 Ben3arfa // Feb 4, 2014 at 2:16 PM

THAT STUPID OLD MAN IS NO LONGER AT OUR CLUB MUAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • 6 mag // Feb 4, 2014 at 2:17 PM

Pardew is the elephant in the room and until he is removed nothing will change he’s had three seasons and it’s not happening for him time for change.

haha maybe. I think he walked as he didn’t want to be seen a the scapegoat, something llambias also did.

Even Ashley’s own pals are abandoning him….his time is coming.

It is a shame you always feel the need to resort to personal insults when quite a lot of people actually share my views.

It’s usually a sign of somebody who is very insecure or is somewhat cerebrally and intellectually challenged. Either works for me.

The writing is on the wall for Pardew a good hiding of Chelsea and he will be gone.

  • 13 Rotonda heights // Feb 4, 2014 at 2:24 PM

    Mag

it really sucked that no one else was even interviewed for the job at the time. History shows that Pardew’s one top 6th finish in nearly 20 years was clearly a one off dependent on so many factors that season.

sadly I think there’s more misery to endure yet, but to get rid of JFK is at least a positive start.

Why? The lads nearly 30, well outside the transfer policy and really doesn’t look that great

  • 16 mag // Feb 4, 2014 at 2:29 PM

Rotonda Ashley took a gamble with Pardew that’s what he basically is a gambler and it’s gone arse up on him Kinnear was pardews excuse for pardews cock ups and Ashley has removed his excuse and so pardews on his own.

  • 17 nightfa11 // Feb 4, 2014 at 2:33 PM

gomis? wtf? we need a profilic striker..not someone who scores a goal every 3 matches..at their prime..in french league..at 29..

  • 18 Rotonda heights // Feb 4, 2014 at 2:34 PM

Well Done Kinnear But What About Alan Pardew?

1 hour ago by Adam Morrison
Well what can you say about the Kinnear resignation?

I say thank you Joe for doing the decent thing and going. This is more than I can say for the pathetic puppet that is our manager.

kinnear resignation People need to remember it was job success for Joe. Does anyone really think the job description was to go out and take Newcastle to the Champions League?

Joe has helped ensure that Newcastle are around £60 million in the black this season thanks to increase in tv revenue and transfer dealings.

Kinnear has done everything that was asked of him yet will not give more time to cover up the horrendous job being done by the other two cockneys at Newcastle.

People can say what they want about one game not defining a season but the pure humiliation on Saturday was like nothing I have ever experienced at Newcastle. That I’m afraid is someone’s fault and that person is Pardew!

The constant lies and excuses are driving me away from the game I love. We still had 11 players who should have been able to compete with a team that was bottom of the league for most of the year.

The words ‘we were probably too hyped up for it’ nearly made me put a wall through in my house when I heard it. Is this the sort of guy you want as our manager!?

Kinnear has again done his job and took the heat off Pardew for a few days but I just hope by this time next week we are talking about Pardew growing a pair and taking responsibility and resigning.

Hey, maybe without a DOF and manager even Ashley might consider walking away……

  • 19 mag // Feb 4, 2014 at 2:36 PM

Old Carr should be lining up top young strikers anyone could scout established internationals.

If we’re 1-0 away from home what are we supposed to do?defend all game going for the 1-0?,keep attacking and leave yourself open?.What most teams would do is sit back and counter attack hoping to catch the other team out but if you don’t score it looks like your defending too much,Chelsea were perfect last night, got the goal early and played on the counter but they have world class players all over.I bet the performances your talking about were mostly away from home.

    mojo

last night Chelsea played man c , I would expect some counter attack football

but you pick the best teams in the league, im talking about playing Cardiff west brom stoke sundeland Fulham, these types of teams at our home, we do not set out to attack, with our better quality, we sit and wait, score then defend,

we only beat stoke at home because they lost 2 men, we were already a goal down and looking poor,,

but you can highlight the games v the top teams if you like

  • 21 Transfer Sage // Feb 4, 2014 at 2:37 PM

    rotonda

Pressure in mounting on Ashley, fans back against him, his two chums llambias and kinnear walking away from jobs he gifted them….pardew will walk before the end of the season (just a hunch, keep his stock high)

Even the media now say “mike ashley has brought stability to the club but….” and some say nothing much will change til he leaves.

Everyone is figuring the man out for what he is.

“It’s Time To Sign Up This Striker For Newcastle”

    Why?

And just whilst I am being ever so slightly critical; I very much liked the idea of a ‘Mission Statement’ but did not get to the end of the ‘bullet points’ as they became very descriptive and rambling. Any chance you (Ed) could revise and make them proper targets which I may then be able to agree/disagree with?

Why do you question the least relevant point?.I used Chelsea as an example because they went a goal up and played counter attack, when we go 1 nil up away and try to play on the counter it looks like were being too defensive because our counter attacks are not working. Chelsea have world class players everywhere

  • 37 lesh // Feb 4, 2014 at 2:58 PM

It’s a bit worrying to see the sack Pardew brigade are on the prowl again.

but that is manager not the player

anita has been man of the match many times

marv, looked one of the better players , I think he normally does

mhendi is doing very well in Greece undere a new coach, also did well in scottland

LDJ, does not look a bad player, but lets see how he does with no service

RA is the only one who has not shown us anything, but I did watch a reserve game on MUTV , they beat us , but I thought he did ok up to about 60 mins, but that is a different level

    Grahame

You said this on a previous page

… by someone else who had started to research it, more info was provided by people from here who checked NUFC Accounts to verify it. They then checked the Land Registry to verify Planning had been sought – it has, by a Manchester Company for Student Accommodation.
There doesnt seem to be any doubt that the land in question was transfered from NUFC to Mash Holdings. There is confirmation that a planning application has been submitted for Student Accommodation.
The land above the Metro station “Is for sale” –

    ==========================================================================================
    OG writes ….

This is not to put you right so to speak, its just so’s I can address it and have it in front of me ..her goes..and I will update later

The Land has not been bought by Ashley, It has not been sold by Ashley or Nufc ,

The last planning item was for an extended drinks licence at lane 7 ..numbers 80 to 90 ..that covers the new number nine bar .

The planning application that was submitted just last August was by a company called G-Casino …not happening !

So there is nothing on the system about mash holdings

There is nothing on the system about a Manchester based student accommodation company ..nothing at all on the system ..and that’s from me and just been checked and verified in the last 20 mins .

None of the afore mentioned have even applied or are know of….I’m amazed at your initial “story ” seems like you have been fed a line mate.

  • 42 catchy in norway // Feb 4, 2014 at 3:05 PM

    you really miss the point

it has been said we have very good players. not as good as Chelsea b but better than the teams I mentioned,

so for us to play counter attack football against poor teams is madness, for us to sit back on a 1 goal lead v them teams is madness

but im sure you just say things to be awkward

    AP,
Did you watch last night’s game? They ‘gave’ them the ball 2/3 of the time but hit City on the counter. Mourinho loves to set his stall that way and has difficulty when the opposite happens to him as his slow CBs get caught high up the pitch, as happened many times with AVB too.
If we have a game plan, it should include containing Hazard, he was behind everything good they did.

  • 45 Markaccus // Feb 4, 2014 at 3:12 PM

  • 46 Greebol1892 // Feb 4, 2014 at 3:12 PM

Yeah let’s jump on the bandwagon and judge a player on ONE GAME. Anita is class but is under the misdirection of our current manager.
How many other games has Anita PROVED to be quality? The answer: ENOUGH!
Yes we are all feeling the pain of yet another mackem humiliation BUT the fact that f*cking Strolla is still leading our line is nothing short of a total disgrace!!!!

  • 47 MrMojoRisin76 // Feb 4, 2014 at 3:16 PM

    Catchy
“so for us to play counter attack football against poor teams is madness, for us to sit back on a 1 goal lead v them teams is madness”

That statement is madness, you don’t get many easy games in this league and you want to attack teams all game, even some games at home we come under some pressure for spells in the game.To attack all game away from home is idiotic.

  • 48 Greebol1892 // Feb 4, 2014 at 3:17 PM

There are a few ways to attack teams all game away from home, get a squad like Chelsea or play Fifa 14.Now you may think Fifa isn’t real life but you wouldn’t think that with some of the comments on here.It won’t be long before somebody comes on to complain that Pardew doesn’t use his keeper to take on the full opposition team and score very often.

@MRMojo So you’re saying that Mouriniho was idotic in his tatics lastnight when chelsea beat Mancity?? we should have stuck with 4-3-3 on saturday.

  • 55 Graeme // Feb 4, 2014 at 3:31 PM

OG @ 41 – the original comment, posted on “The Mag” that started this is below:-

“Wish an investigative journalist would dig into MA as not only is he selling our playing assets but he is selling the land he inherited with the Club. This is all in the accounts and Mash Holdings (no prizes for guessing who this is) took the Pitt Street site out of the Club and it is now being built on as a hotel. This is not on the radar compared to the fact that the land above the St James Metro Station which the Club at one point was going to develop with MGM for a casino was also stripped out. This is now also up for sale and with it goes the chance to extend St James Park.”

I think Lesh then found some info on the Pitt Street site obtaining PP for a Student Accommodation block. You now have as much information as I do.
If the land belonging to the club has been transfered to Mash Holdings why isnt the procedes being used to reduce the alleged debt that the club owes Ashley?

  • 56 MrMojoRisin76 // Feb 4, 2014 at 3:33 PM

They say attack is the best form of defence and if we were setup to play like that on saturday i think the result would’ve being some what different. If when we go away to teams we shouldn’t get intimidated i’m just rueing that we should be sitting on 42 pts and still in with a shout for europe.

How can we expect Alan Pardew or any manager for that matter to succeed when he has to sell to such an extent as what this table shows

    http://www.transferleague.co.uk/league-tables/transfer-league-table-last-five-seasons.html

basically we are weakening our squad by £9m per season when others such as Sunderland are strengthening their squads by £10m, Stoke by £18m, Southampton by £12m and so on, taking that into consideration how on earth can we expect Alan Pardew or whoever the manager may be to succeed, granted Arsenal and Everton have done well but they have not by a long way weakened to the extent that we have, it does put into perspective just how far behind the rest of the league we are when it comes to giving ourselves a chance, so how on earth can we possibly blame the manager ?

Band B – checked out that link on the official site -wht a set of wallies.
For those that have not checked it out -the Toon are selling tickets for an event at SJP. (It’s a comedy evening).
The first line describing the event states :-
“Join us for our debut comedy event at St. James’ Park on Saturday, 1st March, featuring Gary Delaney.”
I think a few supporters would say there has been a long history of comedy events at SJP.
The other thing I spotted was that they have included some reviews of the performers -including one from the Evening Chronicle – bit of a cheek I thought.

    Mordashov , who’s he ? Anything in this ??
Re Pardew, I think the time to cry for a new manager was last year. This season our football is much better, as we requested. Outside of Everton, we are the best of the rest of the division ( for now! ) . yes we have been awful in cup ( possibly due to pressure from Ashley to get a higher league placing ) . And we have been awful v makems. But we also beat Man U away and had good results across the season. yes Pardew could be better, but he could also be worse. Incidentally Solsjaer the hero of some screamers on here, doesn’t seem to be ripping up trees so far ?

  • 70 wolfshead@toon // Feb 4, 2014 at 4:21 PM

are some people diconnected from reality or just wums take us forward to where exactly?? bumble has stated he doesnt want to be involved in cup competitions or europe so that also precludes us from a top 5 finish this is us ffs http://www.joe-ks.com/archives_mar2012/GoingAroundInCircles.htm

  • 71 Munster Mag // Feb 4, 2014 at 4:22 PM

I like Laudrup but hasn’t his team struggled this season with Europa as pardew predicted when Huw Jenkins and Laudrup mouthed off last season? Yes I like his football, but if he was up in 4th or something I’d give the argument more credit .

  • 72 MosesNUFC // Feb 4, 2014 at 4:23 PM

toonarmydownsouth, he is the perfect manager for us. He’s got swansea playing the best football in the league (on their day anyway) they’re currently going through bad form, but europa league has impacted on their season.

Winning a major trophy in your first season in the PL is not the sign of a bad manager. He can bring a philosophy to the club, give us a huge breath of fresh air. Attractive, attacking, passing football week in week out. I’d take him over pardew any day, wouldn’t you?
It looks like he’s gonna leave swansea, so we HAVE to sack pardew and sweep in for him by this summer. He’s someone who can bring back the entertainers. And he will have much better players at his disposal at newcastle, and him and his coaching staff will be able to get the best out of every player and adapt every player to play his way. Whether ashley sells or stays we have to replace pardew with laudrup.

  • 73 wolfshead@toon // Feb 4, 2014 at 4:23 PM

anyway fvck this im gonna find a chelsea fan site :-)

  • 74 MosesNUFC // Feb 4, 2014 at 4:26 PM

Münster mag, alexei mordashov was a season ticket holder at newcastle from 1999-2002, and graduated at northumbria uni. he’s now a billionaire, worth around 14billion. Go on twitter there’s loads of people talking about him, and also emailing him to buy NUFC!

And also on laudrup, he’s the perfect manager for us, he will bring mouthwatering football and i think he’s been very unlucky with swansea this season, with michu getting injured and him not getting on with jenkins. Whether we’re with ashley or not we have to get laudrup in

HE has got them playing the worst brand of football Swansea has played in years, a brand that was well and truly installed and adapted by Martinez and Rodgers
As for Europa how come that wasn’t an acceptable excuse for Pardew

Perfect, no chance, fully backed spent record fee’s and has undone there style of play and they look poorer than ever in the league

The difference being Martinez and Rodgers have there own style that they implemented at there clubs, as proved solely at Swansea and both have managed to transition that to there current clubs

Laudrupp used the summer to get his targets in (fully backed btw) to implant his style of play and has failed…….miserably

Still somewhat early days for Laudrup, however, I think it’s clear he’s no messiah and has struggled with similar issues to Pardew…issues like Europa and injuries.

Nothing against Laurdrup to be clear, but after some of his comments last season I imagine this season may have been a somewhat humbling experience.

Yes Swansea do play a better style of football than us (not that I watch loads of them), but then they did before too.

Bottom line for me, at this stage of the season, he’s not doing any better than Pardew did last season.

Might be prettier, doesn’t make it more effective.

Does anyone know what problems he’s having at Swansea? Problem with the owner or is it more the owner not happy with their position…maybe there isn’t even a problem :)

Anyway, back to our club…So we’re in no rush for a DOF or senior management replacement figure?

Funny that. What? No explanation as to why?

They’re either the absolute worst at PR or think we’re the biggest mugs going. Likely a bit of both.

I think last year laudrupp brought swansea what they had lacked under previous managers and that was a cutting edge to their nice build up play…Michu definitely helped by scoring a lot but they improved their passing in the final third.

He has made a few signings this year which aren’t great but some have been good. I think if you coupled that with a good scouting system then you might get over that problem.

As for this year, there points are a lot different, 24 points after 24 games compared to 46 last year, so yeh they have dropped off. A lot of that could be the internal politics which seems to be laudrupp not getting on with certain higher ups at the club…he looks a bit broken.

I think with our squad he’d do more than pardew does with it, but obviously I can’t prove that, just my opinion on it.

    Munster

Soljskaer is in charge of one of the worse teams in the league, difficult to judge him, especially after 3/4 games.

I never worry too much about those stats as they are misleading. I remember one game last year bbc sport had us having 52% possession and sky down as 65%…how does that work out.

Btw I just want to make it clear I’m not by anyway supporting Pardew here!
But if we get a new manager i hope some severe thought goes into it!
Not just hiring a manager because he won the league cup, so did Alex Macliesh!
For me clubs like Cardiff/Swansea can afford to take a gamble on a more unproven manager but for me as a club and a fan base i don’t think we’d afford a new manager the time if an immediate improvement wasn’t seen

    Let’s take Laudrupp
Since leaving Brøndby he’s averaged just over one season per club, if he was a player still with that record he’d be a journeyman!

Where as managers like Martinez, Rodgers even Makay have shown at the very least steady improvement season after season on the pitch

If we get a new manager, which i do think we need as there’s to much history now with Pardew the board and the fans then I’d prefer to see one who’s proven he can do it over an extended period not just a flash in the pan
Remember it wasn’t that long ago people were calling for Steve Clark…

Laudrup, 7 wins in 34 games?

As for the mouth watering football, the only thing Swansea do well is hold possession, that is trained into them since before Laudrup arrived, not of his doing.

The Europa league is no excuse either, he won only 1 of the last 10 Premier League games last season, if anything Swansea have improved since being in Europe.

Swansea look clueless under Laudrup… I would rather keep Pardew, at least he gets it right some of the time.

I still like him though as a manager but he isn’t the best around, prefer pochettino.

Stat’s are meaningless unless given fully and properly analyzed really. I mean you could have 50 shots on target all from 40 yards, probably less like to score than having 5 shots from 10 yards.

That’s the problem when people quote stats, i know i do it myself at times, but unless you analyze them in a bit more detail, like that article i posted does, then they aren’t always meaningful.

Need to see where the passes were made, what kind of long ball, were people around to win the 2nd ball etc, did the shots happen close to goal or miles away etc etc

I think the issue I have with pardew, although I didn’t notice it until a couple months ago, is not so much how we play, it’s where we play.

This season we have passed the ball really well, cut out the long balls that were wasted and focus on short stuff more, looks a lot better. The problem comes playing like that in the final third, we get near there box and struggle to make the right runs, the right pass etc.

I know that’s the hardest part but we do struggle with it. Sometimes when we let the handbrake off we look a lot better, but too often we are very static and didn’t have that killer ball.

I know we can’t attack for 90 mins and dominate, and some teams will get the better of us but if he was just that little more adventurous we’d be fine.

It’s why I said earlier to markaccus here that i didn’t think a good technical coach/assistant would help him as it’s not he can’t get us playing well, it’s more his approach/mentality…..although a coach helping may improve us that little bit and give him the confidence, i really don’t know.

Well I didn’t find out that JFK Had been shot from the grassy knoll by Wor Bobby’s statue until I was on my way to work this morning, so forgive me if I repeat anything said in previous articles, I am not sorry cause here’s my tuppence ha’penny bit :-

So, has Mike been genuinely disappointed by his DoF’s performance, or was this pantomime always on the cards? Did Pardew point the finger of blue fir the third successive face ripping loss to the freaking dirt bags directly at Ol’ Joe, so he had to be taken behind the barn and put to sleep?

I don’t know, does anyone? I still think that although he is a shrewd wholesale business supremo, Mike knows Jack about running a football club and probably never will, but this time I think he knows it, I certainly hope so. Because that will mean he finally realises that ticket sales, far from being peanuts, represent the public profile of the club, that popularity (of rather lack of it) dimishes the stock of NUFC, SD By extension. If for no other reason than it hurts his pocket, Ashley needs to heed the call of his manager and his players who coincidentally decided to throw in the towel when the transfer window closed and no new talent came in. Player power is not unknown in such circumstances.

Ashley needs a proper Head of Footballing activities who has the remit to tell Ashley the full caffeine version, demand a budget, and ironically, go out and find a decent manager (the best are still cheap in comparison to the average player) before the end of the season and get a proper negotiator, who doesn’t misrepresent the club as clueless drunk OAP’s, as soon as possible.

This next three months is the perfect window of opportunity for Mike to get his shirt together and make this club as good as it deserved to be if for no other reason than it would be the perfect symbiosis.

I agree a top coach would improve us massively, which is why I was screaming out for one when it was clear Pardew was going nowhere

But I still think the lack of natural width has an impact on our performance in the final third
That’s my biggest issue with not replacing Cabaye, he was a specialist in midfield, the players were looking at to step up maybe good technical players but like an increasing amount of our players they seem to be utility players rather than mastering one role

That was some essay mind. :)

Sage – I’m not the only one to think that about our lack of presence in the final third. It’s worse now than ever, and I blame Cisse’s lack of form squarely on this. We ‘attack’ like we don’t belong there, there’s defending to be done. The only risk taker is Ben Arfa, but he is hopelessly exposed because we can never afford someone technical to play it forward with him. It’s a joke that he does his job as an AM, and when he loses the ball in the final third we contrive to ship a goal and blame him rather than our all at Sea defence. I think Pardew sets his team up to be got at.

This was what was written about Laudrup before the season started, when he by some was tauted as the second most exciting new manager around:

    Expert Views:

Brendan Rodgers propelled Swansea into the Premier League and then secured an impressive 11th place finish on their return to the big time – how do you follow that? Simple. Just sign the bargain of the season, play more exciting attacking football, finish 8th and lift the first major trophy in the club’s history to cap off the club’s centenary year.

These were the feats of the Great Dane Michael Laudrup. Laudrup has not made wholesale changes to Swansea’s style of play just subtle tweaks to sharpen the Swans attack. For example, Laudrup has the Swans playing with a very narrow 4-2-3-1 with the attacking three, usually Nathan Dyer, Wayne Routledge and Pablo Hernandez, behind the striker perpetually rotating positions. Laudrup has retained Swansea’s much lauded passing game yet unlike Rodgers, Laudrup places more emphasis on the ball getting up the pitch quickly.

You cannot fault Laudrup’s efforts in the transfer market either, signing a whole host of quality players on a relatively small budget. Of course, his biggest coup was the jaw-droppingly cheap signature of Michu – a measly £2m for a player who filled two roles at times and scored 22 times in all competitions. His exploitation of the Spanish market has been brilliant – for me, Chico Flores is still one of the most underrated players in the league and it’ll be interesting to see how Laudrup’s latest Spanish recruits, Canas, Pozuelo and Amat, fare in the Premier League

He may not have the same personable feel with the fans (or certain players apparently) that Rodgers and Martinez possessed, but you cannot argue with the results he is getting. Laudrup has a reputation of not staying at clubs for too long and leaving clubs suddenly; Swansea have already endured a mass amount of speculation surrounding Laudrup, but it appears the Dane is here to stay for the 2013/14. As for the 2014/15 season – personally, I can see him being elsewhere by then.

It is almost like we have been let into the VIP area by mistake and constantly looking over our shoulder waiting to be lynched when we approach the final third.

Or like back in the day when the local sweet shop would only let 1 kid in at a time, that’s what we look like.

We just never get numbers forward, then when ben arfa looses it people get on his back but in reality he might have one pass on which is only 20% in his favour anyway.

Sometimes though everything clicks and we get men forward in numbers and run riot, like we did in the first half at west ham or norwich, just never converted our chances we created.

Ashleys got to do something about his advisors. He can’t run the club on skeleton staff like his shops. Is he going to run out and buy players himself like going down the Spar for a loaf?

I have no idea what you are talking about

2-3 years, what are you talking about Swansea started to develop there style of play when Martinez took over in 2007 it’s taken years to get there style of play and has nothing to do with Laudrupp so more to the point what are you talking about and where are you going with this

7 wins in 34 PL games, if Pardew had those stats he’d be hanging from the Gallowgate end

You can trawl the internet and find write ups on any manager after a good season
Christ you can find numerous articles like that on Pardew after the 5th place finish
He isn’t living up to the hype and is looking a flash in the pan

  • 142 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Feb 4, 2014 at 6:26 PM

tads…sometimes I just don’t understand your points! I get you don’t rate Laudrup, but just say that instead of drawing conclusions that are not really there!

  • 143 toonarmydownsouth // Feb 4, 2014 at 6:27 PM

    Jesper
Jesus can’t out it any clearer lad, MARTINEZ implemented SWANSEA’S style of play, with was then adopted by Rodgers

Laudrupp adopted a team and style of play that was working, since his first jan window he started putting his stamp on the side and they look worse for it

  • 144 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Feb 4, 2014 at 6:30 PM

tads… no one has adopted Martinez’ style of play. You are seeing three different managers playing a brand of football based on the same philosophy, but they are as different as Pardew are to Pulis or Hughton!

  • 145 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Feb 4, 2014 at 6:31 PM

….there is a reason why I asked if you really have watched Swansea regularly or you are just watching highlights!

I’ve been debating it just fine with Sage with both putting points across

As for debating, it would be easier if you were debating something instead of just saying i don’t understand stop talking about it

  • 148 Transfer Sage // Feb 4, 2014 at 6:35 PM

    jesper/tads

if you don’t mind me weighing in with my bit

I think what people mean when they say he adopted a system and then adapted it, it’s more the playing squad. They have a type of player they go for (much the way barcalone like to, with only slight changes between manager) and that the club’s passing philosophy is always the same.

Laudrupp inherited a very well drilled team which kept possession and had a very tight defense. Laudrupp added his own players to try and bring them out of their shell a bit more and be attacking with the possession.

The point tads is making i think, if that now that laudrupp has his own players (not just a squad he inherited) he can’t get them to play as well, the good work left by rgers, which helped them last season when combined with laudrupp isn’t there now so its 100% laudrupp style now (not maybe 70% laudrupp, 30% rogers from last year) and as such he is struggling.

Much like how arsenal had a great defense when wenger arrived but as he brought his own players in and turned the clubs style around the solidity suffered but the attacking play improved over time.

  • 149 toonarmydownsouth // Feb 4, 2014 at 6:37 PM

    Jesper
Just seem highlights? Watched Swansea a lot over the last 7 years have you mate?
I didn’t say he was using Martinez style, Martinez and Swansea took a long path to implement Swansea’s style of play, a style in the lower leagues they became very very well known for, them Rodgers took over and bought into Swansea’s philosophy and now Laudrupp

Laudrupp has tried to put his own stamp on Swansea, not Martinez’s style and it isn’t working
The stats fully back that up, there possession stats are worse this season and there form is dire
    7 wins in 34….

It’s beginning to look conclusive that the financial prudence set in place to consolidate NUFC was no more than expediency on Ashleys part

I admit to being a founder member of Optimism Valley. But mike has had the full length of rope and has proceeded to hang himself with it. Never mind the raft of insults toward the fans, his continued arrogant silence betrays his intransigence and outright contempt for the man in the street. Straight from his SD ethos. I just hope he doesn’t call it a day when he breaks even and trashes the club, drains the coffers covertly to SD through advertising, sponsorship and franchising, makes us insolvent and has the club wound up. Sell the stadium to mackem businessman and let him build a mall with a S*nderland FC shop pride if place in the middle of it. Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has been named LMA Manager of the Year, after guiding his side to fifth place in the Premier League.
The award is voted by LMA members, including all managers from the four professional leagues in England.
Newcastle, who had been expected to struggle, won 19 of their 38 league games, recording 15 clean sheets.
Pardew was also named Barclays Premier League manager of the year at the ceremony in London on Monday.
LMA chairman Howard Wilkinson said: “Alan Pardew’s achievements at Newcastle this season are there for all to see and it is just reward that he should be named as LMA Manager of the Year.
“I’m often asked, ‘where are all the English coaches?’ My answer is ‘We have plenty of them, they just need an opportunity’. I am delighted for Alan that he has taken his opportunity.”
The award comes days after the former West Ham and Charlton boss was also named Barclays Manager of the Year .

…they have also been playing the most exciting football ever. Now I watch Swansea almost every week and have done so for the past three years!

Have a read of what i posted to you and tads at 147…think that might help explain it.

People saying that swansea did well last year as laudrupp made only slight changes to rogers style (so maybe 70% laudrupp, 30% rogers) but not he has got his own style in place 100% and eveything rogers coached into them has been removed he hasn’t been as successful.

Whether right or wrong, that’s the argument, hope it helps

  • 187 Ibizatoon // Feb 4, 2014 at 7:06 PM

Jesper…I think tads’ main point is not that Laudrup doesn’t have a style of his own, but he inherited a team that already had a somewhat similar philosophy, so the task at hand was perhaps lesser than someone who arrive at NUFC to a team with pretty much no footballing style anymore.

I guess yours and most others point is, if we’re not going to achieve greatness, why not at least enjoy some better style of football. Which is absolutely fair enough…back over to Mr. Ashley.

Not in the least bit interested in the table, someone else bought that up, 7 wins in 34 games was the counter point, but put that in context as to where it would take a club in the long term, if that was over one season given you play 38 games, that would take you to the championship!

  • 198 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Feb 4, 2014 at 7:16 PM

TS…I read your post, but I still don’t agree. Swansea is struggling this season because they are both not the underdogs this season, keyplayers are injured with have caused his way of playing football alot of problems and certain new players have not been ready to take over!

…this is my honest opinion. We will see where they are at the end of the season and how next season goes!

TS…Laudrup played alot more attacking football last season than Rodgers and more direct. He moves the play high up the field, but also uses a lot of long passes. It is actually very different from Rodgers if you look deep into the core of it :)

I can’t see it, he won’t payout the contract or even the buyout if there is one. Pards will have to resign. If he does, get a PROPER DOF and bring back Shearer. He may have been hard done, but with proper backing, his passion for the club will raise the play level just a that much more.

As for why Pardew is being mentioned, mainly as last year there was a lot of “fire Pardew, hire Laudrup!” Plus there was of course his backhanded comments about the EL and transfers aimed towards Pardew.

People might shoot me down here but I am starting to wonder how much Ashley even knows what is going on with Newcastle.

Though it is big to us, it’s a mere slice of his business empire. Last weekend for example, he was said to be in Ireland trying to buy an ailing Irish sports retailer. Likely burning the midnight oil in long negotiations.

I wonder whether he just delegated all to JFK and Charnely and occasionally metaphorically pops his heed in.

As I have said before, I think it is clear he wants to run the club on a budget with the “Arsenal model” (the Arsenal pre-Orzil and pre-Emirates paid off that is) but I think it is bollox that he does want the club to do well.

As I say there is easier money to be made for him elsewhere so, I see this as something he owns for “fun” and the cache.

I am starting to think more and more he is pi$$ed of with what has gone on in the last month or so with signings and a string of bad results.

  • 215 Ibizatoon // Feb 4, 2014 at 7:34 PM

Jesper..Written opinions can often get lost in translation somewhat…a little leniency with the way others word things can often help avoid too much aggravation.

For instance, reading your posts on Laurdup, it’s quite clear you believe 100% in what you type, should we perceive that as only your opinion or you forcing that ideal of fact upon us?

It’s open to interpretation, hence my earlier call for people to relax :)

p…Perhaps you could bill Ashley as part of a scouting exercise?

it ties in with what I am saying…last year swansea had the benefits of still having the organisation rogers ingrained into them but also had the new approach of attacking with the possession with laudrup.

this season more has changed, laudrup has drilled the last bit of rogers mentality out of them and I think that has left them to open.

Swansea are struggling because they have a very small squad whilst in Europe and also because their best player has been injured the majority of the season.

“The club will be making no further comment at this stage, but will endeavour to keep our supporters updated with any future development.”

Dragon…Ashley would actually have to change the way he runs the club though. If he did that, with or without Keegan, we wouldn’t have as many issues as we do now. Ashleys problem isn’t really personnel, it’s his philosophy imo (See! See! IMO!!! ;) ).

Pathetic comment that is, how does conditions affect the tactical decision of a manager? let alone three in a row loss to our rivals and even in our Home ground which hurts me so much.

  • 251 Ian Toon // Feb 4, 2014 at 7:52 PM

So Joe Kinnear or, as some Newcastle fans took to calling him, Jokin’ ‘Ere, is no longer the Director of Football at Newcastle United.

Joe Kinnear, Just try saying the name and try not to smile. Or else just call him JFK. Harry Pottymouth. None of the names are the reason that ‘Ere resigned seven and a half months after being drafted in to reinforce the squad by drawing on his vast knowledge of football and other words beginning with f. Life at the toon wasn’t easy for our very own, instead, he had to consider such names such as Bafétimbi Gomis, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Darren Bent, Florian Thauvin, Rémy Cabella and Clément Grenier, all players that the Toon tried and failed to lure during ‘Ere’s eventfully shy signing- tenure. Maybe it was on a relative personal high for JFK, if not the toon fans, that his departure should follow after the club had lost its most influential player, Yohan Kebab, to PVC.

‘Ere has so far resisted the temptation to talk to Talksport and explain his decision, even by way of an explicit gesture, so we can only surmise that the frustration at missing out on so many targets has forced ‘Ere’s hand. Being derided by supporters is unlikely to have bothered him – after all, he has “got far more intelligence than us, that’s for sure” – so his decision may have been motivated by the impression that he seemed to be making Alan Pardew squirm, and even Mike Ashley may have been uncomfortable. Still, given the esteem with which ‘Ere claims he is held by even the biggest names in football, it surely won’t be long before he is offered another high-profile job.

He won Carling Cup in less than 2 years, what has Pardew won??

He had a side from the Championship, signed couple of players but the squad was much smaller than ours from last year.

We had a side full of players with flair but even if we had players that weren’t injured, I would like to remind you Aston Villa at home, we could not score and create nothing!!

I agree mate, but Pardew simply cannot move us further from mid-table. He has no ability to get the best out of players as well, as you saw once Cabaye left, whole team were told to hoof it from back and hope for the best… This makes me think, Pardew focused on one player for the past 2 years and thats Cabaye, to get best out of him. While, you got other managers that can multi-task and get the most out of multiple players!!

I just hate when fans say Pardew has his hand tied to his back or its down to Mike Ashley. Sorry but who selects the team, the tactics and does the training? I am sure 100% Mike Ashley doesn’t as he barely gets out of London Westminster. When fans have statements like these it makes you think, we will never move forward because Mike Ashley has the perfect man made for him for the puppeteer job…

busy reading all the good banter to night , ( been learning more Norwegian :) )

got to say TS I’m well pleased you now see what I have been saying about where we play football , long ball or long shots , it = the same , he is afraid to comit , always in fear of losing, no matter who we play,

I don’t think the guy has sat down with the other coaches and really looked at his squad, he has a system and will fit players into that system, rather than play to his squads strengths , he needs players like HBA but is afraid of there ability, come 80 mins he sets him free to do his stuff, which in turn is miss read by the fans as HBA being greedy, all caused by pardew

the simple fact is he is out of his depth, big time

the argument about laudrup , and Clarke , there both good managers that would move us forward , Swansea is not a great squad , and finished ninth last year , they could still finish 9th this year , they whoped us 3-0 with no strikers clocking up 700+ passes

both Clarke and laudrup play the game right, and with our squad , I think they could do wonders ,

cisse is not a bad striker, he just gets no service , he is not a winger , he is an instinctive striker , put the ball in and watch him go

  • 280 pawl250 // Feb 4, 2014 at 8:15 PM

    Jack

It is funny as neither were sacked.

Martinez had a much bigger task than managing Swansea with Wigan …..

And Rogers brought and sustained Swansea in the PL not Laudrup!

He inherited a solid team, with a decent mold of passing football.

I think we can do better than Pardew, but Laudrup is not that much of an improvement if any!

Laudrup may have won a league cup, but it doesn’t make him a great manager!

If it does why did no one run for Mclaren? Or McLeish oh wait Villa did and look what happened!

League cup can be won by any team given a bit a of luck, including Sunderland as seen recently against Man Utd and Chelsea, bell they came back from 2-0 down with 10 minutes to go to get back MK Dons!

Winning a cup is an achievement but it doesn’t make you a great manager!

Also found your comments on Laudrup slightly strange as the Newcastle squad is on a different level to Swansea, tactically ML is on a different planet to pardew. He would have us on more points thi season easily.

Not Just About Ashley Out, More About Good Management In

3 mins ago by Waseem Shakoor
Joe Kinnear has never been anything other than a pantomime villain at Newcastle United, who we could all boo and jeer at for the failure to bring in reinforcements to the squad.

Getting rid of him however, does mean that we become a more serious outfit. Why Mike Ashley ever thought it was a good idea, I don’t know, but I guess a decision like that is fairly typical of the kind of brain freeze that the owner has from time to time.

ashley outI don’t want to talk any more about Joe Kinnear – frankly, he’s not worth it and has always been an insignificant figure at the club. We have a far more serious problem at Newcastle but one which can be similarly fixed fairly easily if the right decision is made.

Alan Pardew was fully exposed on Saturday as he was shown to be tactically inept, embarrassed by Gus Poyet – a man who has a philosophy over how the game should be played and will empower his players to express themselves.

In contrast, Pardew has occasionally played some very good football this season (probably forced to do so by Cabaye!) but it’s against his nature. When under pressure, his default setting is always restored – long ball to Shola, bypassing midfield and all the French guys, whose technical ability he doesn’t really trust.

The players we had on the field and on the bench against Sunderland were perfectly capable of playing proper football and I have no doubt that, if we had swapped managers for the game, we would have won comfortably.

We have a wonderful asset in the form of Chief Scout (and effective Director of Football) Graham Carr and Kinnear’s exit can only help placate the man who has saved Mike Ashley’s investment in recent years.

Personally, I don’t care whether it is Ashley out or in – I just want him to hire some decent people to run the club effectively and sit back and let them get on with it. We don’t need him to inject any more money into the club – we just need him to stop embarrassing it and to make some sensible appointments.

Pardew isn’t a top class manager and, contrary to media nonsense, he wouldn’t ‘walk into’ another leading Premiership job.

I have a plan, which is relatively simple.

    1. Sack Alan Pardew, either now or at the end of the season.

    2. Give Graham Carr the title of Director of Football, but have him do exactly the same job he is doing now.

    3. Hire Nicola Cortese as Executive Chairman, a job which he performed spectacularly well at Southampton.

    4. Hire Mauricio Pochettino, a manager who has transformed Southampton’s playing style with limited resources, whilst also making them believe that there is no limit to what they can achieve. He plays great football and never has an inferiority complex against ‘better sides’.

That’s it. As for the rest, let them get on with it.

You will note that none of the above requires Ashley to commit huge amounts of money or net spending on transfer fees – our balance sheet is strong enough for the club to ‘wipe its nose’ but it’s time to put it to good use and empower the right people to make good decisions on moving us forward. Kinnear was always a joke appointment but Pardew is not the man to trust with spending any money – if left to him, we’d now have players like Bent, Tompkins and Downing. He has to go.

Ashley doesn’t want to put more money into the club, but I doubt he would be averse to seeing the club grow as a global brand, and his investment increase in value. I think he may even start enjoying himself if he puts competent people in charge in the way that Marcus Liebherr did at Southampton.

Cortese took enormous flak from the British media for sacking Pardew and Atkins at Southampton but he showed conviction and a belief that has subsequently embarrassed all those people that doubted he knew what he was doing. His hiring of the relatively unknown Pochettino was inspired and again demonstrated that his knowledge of the game was far beyond that of his detractors.

Newcastle United is a club in need of leadership, focus and a philosophy over what it represents. I think a combination of Cortese, Pocchetino & Carr can provide that.

I would take Hoddle as a manager personally.

I think he is a great coach, and he seems in the right frame of mind.

If I were Levy he would have been my choice.

  • 286 Ibizatoon // Feb 4, 2014 at 8:20 PM

Turkish…I agree and disagree…of course :) As TS has been pointing out, it’s not that Pardew can’t, it’s just he’s horrendously inconsistent.

A lot of it will be down to confidence, that will likely not be helped with the regulations Ashley has in place.

Personally, I don’t believe Pardews instruction is to finish as high as possible, as backwards as that sounds. All he needs to do is grind out results and he has a job. Is that his fault? To some extent of course. However, for things to actually change and not just for one season, Ashley is the one who needs to change first imo.

I’m not saying he is a great manager, but he’d be a big upgrade on Pardew though and the job he’s doing with Swansea is very, very similar with the one that Martinez had with Wigan and yeah you are right Martinez wasn’t sacked but he did relegate Wigan.

And the main reason he was sacked was due to the uncertainty over his future that Jenkins believed was now effecting the players and staff at the club

  • 292 9 // Feb 4, 2014 at 8:24 PM

For heaven’s sake: we think we have a “bad” owner in Mr Ashley – take a look at what’s going down elsewhere: I genuinely used to think Mike Ashley was the worst possible owner, then along came Venky’s at Blackburn, anyone you care to mention at Pompey; anyone you care to mention at Leeds (Good Lord!); look at Birmingham; look at Man City’s previous owner!! That’s not to mention the (now almost extinct) MUFC’s fans’ fury at the Glaziers; Liverpool’s adventures with the two Yanks.

At least our lad is English. How about that nice Mr Tan changing his club’s colours? Or that nice Mr (Hull owner) changing his club’s name??
Good grief, what a pickle Premier League clubs have ended in as a result of, initially, Sky money.
So, there’s an off-hand list of worse owners than ours. Now you can quote me better (current/very recent) ones, please:

He generally doesn’t spend that much time at the one Club Laudrup.

I don’t believe for one second that he would work with Ashley like. I think he fell out with the Swansea chairman for not spending, so the last person he’ll want to work with is Mike Ashley.

Don’t get me wrong I’m happier than I was on sat but the blame lies with Ashley you can’t tell me he’s stupid enough to know the ramifications of selling Cabaye and not replacing him just like Carroll and ba he calls the shots the buck stops with him, he soon got the signings in last jan and I’ve no doubt if we were on 20 points he’d still be at the club agreement or not !!!!

  • 318 check the toastie // Feb 4, 2014 at 8:42 PM

Wouldn’t mind Pardew being employed as the DOF, just don’t want him as manager anymore, he stupid and shite, proven it many times, this weekend for me was an improvement on the Liverpool game last season which has to go down as the worst display of football I have ever seen, and that includes all levels.

He should have been sacked last year, Laudrup would be great but would probably want a bigger say on transfers, but to be fair he would probably have a say in 30 million to be spent in the summer.

Swansea as a squad are nowhere near the squad he would have at his disposal here, wouldn’t be surprised if he robbed Swansea of one or two of there ‘purples’ if he could.

  • 319 Lu-toon // Feb 4, 2014 at 8:43 PM

Does no one on here know what makes Ashley tick?
It’s out there for anyone with half a brain to see !
He does not like to employ strangers and prefers people from his own area and background.
The only time he has veered from that philosophy he has been let down big style.
He appointed Chris Mort a trusted lawyer he had dealt with for many years , as NUFC Chairman
    then D Wise
    then JFK
    then A Pardew
then JFK for the 2nd time
Allardyce,Keegan,Shearer,Hughton he was never comfortable with .He will either stick with the status quo giving AP more autonomy with transfers or bring in another person he trusts from the past.
The more people give him a hard time the likelier he is to do this.

  • 324 Ibizatoon // Feb 4, 2014 at 8:45 PM

asenski…I understand, it’s frustrating as hell to see him get it right in some tough games, but seems scared to take on what should be inferior teams.

At first I understood, there were a lot of changes going on and he had a big task on his hand imo. I have seen some improvements this season over last in his approach.

I guess for me, I’m happy enough to give him a chance whilst Ashley is still about as I don’t believe any replacement will do much better.

I’d say I’d love for Ashley to make me eat some humble pie, but as soon as I mention pie Ashley will do his utmost to make sure I don’t get any ;)

  • 343 9 // Feb 4, 2014 at 9:08 PM

outside the box @327: you’ve cottoned on to it. Mr Ashley belongs in the south of England and worships the Spurs outfit : nowt wrong with any of that, unless you’re the sort of ignorant t**t who thinks anybody born south of the watter is therefore inferior; so he trusts people he knows. who share his background -so do all of us, this is normal human behaviour. Why, then, did he buy NUFC when, I’m pretty sure, he’d never set foot in Newcastle in all his born days? We know he famously failed to do due diligence so, as a self-made multi-millionaire he was clearly indulging himself, following his mates at Spurs and thinking he’s spyed a bargain – a “Sleeping Giant” for £130m. He likes football, he’s got a few squillion quid lying around, why not indulge himself in what seemed a “steal”? And weren’t those Geordies meant to be fun, football people? I’m sure I could sink a pint with the best of them… Anyway, I digress: he got it wrong, his motives were undoubtedly, to profit from making NUFC a success (there really is no credible alternative motive) and, my best guess is, that’s exactly what’ll happen : he’ll leave NUFC in a massively stronger position than it was, and he’ll make a profit.

How this affects us: we crave NUFC success on the field; Mr Ashley has no result unless he can sell NUFC at a profit – wehich means, NUFC success on the field.
I really don’t think any of this is mysterious. Please see earlier post re alternative “Ego” owners from foreign parts.
